Yields information about the Bendigo Tram services.Digital image or copy of the SEC "Official Timetable Bendigo June 1940", 22 image files - 44 pages, giving details of the fares, transfers, luggage or parcels, lost property, times of each tram on the Quarry Hill, Eaglehawk, Lake Weeroona and Golden Square for both directions and Monday to Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Has a number of advertisements for SEC home equipment, cookers, toasters, refrigerator, electric radiators and hot water. In the middle page is a map of the Tramway Routes, which has been hand drawn to shown North Bendigo and the depot location. Inside the rear cover, on a sheet headed "Memorandum" is a photograph, taped in of a conductor loading a pram onto a Birney tram. Pamphlet - printed onto an A4 sheet, titled "Sacked" about a MMTB Conductor, No. 3345, John Harrington, asking people who received this pamphlet to write to the Board to have him reinstated. Gives the details of his viewpoints and the action of the Disciplinary Panel. Dated 1-8-1979. The Union Industrial Officer Gordon Bell recommended that he resign. See note in the pdf file from donor - "Item 3 John Harrington - he printed 2000 of these pamphlets and distributed them on Kew Depot trams and Preston Depot trams. He split the union down the middle and resulted in Gordon Bell resigning and Jim Harper becoming Industrial Officer. Has a "advertisement" for shoppers travelling in comfort between 930 and 430, golf, dinner and afternoon tea at the Wattle Park Chalet. Dated April 1951. A panel on the rear has an advertisement for employment of Conductors and Conductresses, gives conditions and where to apply. Printed by Sands and McDougall. Has a printer's reference number and year in the bottom right hand - 1892-56. Not known if this was for use on the last section of tramway route prior to closure - further research required. Newspaper clipping titled: “Tram burns after collision with truck” – The Age 5/9/70 “Quite heroes drag driver from flames” by Robert Parsonage Tram and semi-trailer crash in Thornbury, Route # 9A, driver Bill Armitage suffered a broken right leg and arm and severe burns to most of his body, in critical condition in Preston and Northcote Community Hospital. Semi-trailer driver, Brian Carroll, 25 received burns and is in serious condition in hospital. Conductor Ted Clark, about 35, not injured and helped only passenger, and elderly woman from the tram. Newspaper clipping titled: “New trains, trams hope” – Herald Tues 5/10/71 Photo and text of new tram Experimental new colours, orange, yellow, green Passengers will board through the front door and leave through the centre exit. Driver separated from passengers by a low bulkhead and rails, same style as buses. Conductor will be seated at front entrance. Trams will be heated. Acting chairman of Tramways Board, F D Snell said plans for new trams were complete. “Ready to go as soon as we get the money”. Tram fleet of 700 is planned to be replaced by 600 of improved version. About 900 new trams will be needed by 1985 according to Metropolitan Transport Plan. Gave the conditions, accommodation for up to a year, standards, working conditions, rates of pay, leave, retiring and death gratuities, sport, benefits, becoming a driver, employment, shifts, types of shifts, promotion, wages and conditions. Has a number of photographs of Melbourne, St Kilda Road, Collins St and a photo of a Doncaster bus in a very rural area of Melbourne. Bertha Jorgensen gave her first public performance as a five year old prodigy in Castlemaine, where she then lived, and a few years later she began travelling each week the 60 miles to Melbourne for lessons with Alberto Zelman, Junior. At fifteen, still adorned with pigtail, she came to Melbourne with her family and joined his orchestra. Since then Miss Jorgensen has been constantly engaged in orchestral work, and in attaining the exacting role of leader of the Melbourne Symphony is holder of a unique position. No other major orchestra in the world is led by a woman, and many are the evidences of amazement expressed by visiting conductors. Quamby was built in 1898. From 1900/1903-1924 it was the home of Andrew Sherar and family. From 1924-1960s it operated as Mosgiel Hospital under the direction of Matron Elizabeth Anderson. Until Box Hill Hospital opened most Surrey Hills children were born at Mosgiel or at Nethercourt Hospital in Wilson Street or later in Union Road when Matron Tank moved her hospital here. Mosgiel Hospital was demolished c 1975 after it was sold by Box Hill Hospital. It was replaced by units. Andrew Sherar was conductor of the Wyclif Church choir for many years and was a member of the Melbourne Liedertafel. Isie Sherar was organist at Wyclif Church and also taught piano in Union Road. Connie Sherar was in the Wyclif choir and married Ernest Swan, an elocutionist and orator. Dorothy Sherar was a pianist and accompanist. Elsie Sherar was also in the Wyclif choir and was a soloist; she later moved to Templestowe. Ken Sherar was a boy soprano at St Paul's Cathedral; he later moved to Queensland.Black and white photo looking south down Vincent Street from 'Quamby', located at 293 Mont Albert Road, Surrey Hills. This piece of music, ‘First Love’, dates from the 1850s and was composed by Henry Farmer (1819-1891). Born in Nottingham, Farmer was an organist and composer and conductor of the Nottingham Harmonic Society from 1866 to 1880. He dedicated this music to Miss Hal Chaworth Musters. It is not known who ‘Miss Hal’ was but the Chaworth name was an ancient one in Nottingham and marriage with a member of the Musters family brought into being the name ‘Chaworth Musters’ and the estates included Annesley, Edwalton and Wiverton. The signatures on the front cover indicate that this music is connected to two early families in the district. Stephen Henty owned Cadnook (Kadnook), near Harrow, in the 1850s and sold it to Mordaunt Smalpage (or Smalpaige) in July 1859. Stephen Henty, who came to Victoria in 1836, was the brother-in-law of Captain Helpman, the Warrnambool Harbour Master from 1861 to 1869. They were co-owners of the ‘Champion’ which plied between Portland and Melbourne until it was wrecked off Cape Otway in 1857 when it collided with the ‘Lady Bird’.This is a most significant item because of the signatures on the front cover. Stephen Henty was important, not only in the history of Victoria, but also in the history of Warrnambool because of his connection with coastal shipping and his relationship with Captain Helpman. As far as we know the Hentys never lived in Warrnambool but it is possible that this music was played on the ‘Henty’ piano that was donated to the old Warrnambool Museum in 1889 and is now in the Warrnambool Art Gallery. The Hentys brought six pianos to Victoria in 1837. The music is also important in social history as an example of the music that was played in mid-Victorian drawing rooms. This is a piece of music of seven pages printed back to back (cover and 11 pages of musical notation) The pages have black printing on white with a multi-coloured front cover. The cover has a stylized portrait of a man and woman in period costume. The woman is holding an urn of flowers. Some of the pages are loose and the page folds and corners are tattered and torn. The name ‘Smalpaige ‘is written in ink and the name ‘Henty’ is written in pencil. Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Co. Bell Punch No. D406. A heavy nickel or chrome plated steel ticket or fare strip canceling / registering mechanism used on Melbourne cable trams. When a fare was sold, the bell would ring advising the passenger that their fare have registered. "An ingenious device resembling in principle the ticket punch of a railway porter. It is carried by the conductor who wears pinned to his coat a 'trip-slip'. He punches this once for every fare received; the action is simultaneously registered on a dial inside the punch and bell rings to appraise the passenger of the fact. The punch is provided with a patent lock, the secret of which is known only at headquarters and effective system of check is thus secured." (" A story of the Melbourne Cable Tramway System" - page 54). Used by the MT&O and MMTB until 1922/23 when replaced by the check ticket system. Manufactured by the Railway Register Manufacturing Company. Photograph shows Hawthorn Tramways Trust bogie Tram 15 at Glenferrie and Riversdale Roads 1916-1920. The tram body was built by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide and entered service during April 1916. It was renumbered N class 121 by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board following the absorption of the Trusts by the MMTB in 1920. The tram is eastbound in Riversdale Road. The tracks of the Prahran and Malvern Tramway Trust can be seen in front of the tram. The conductor has alighted from the tram and walked forward to check for trams on Glenferrie Road. A Fire Brigade street fire alarm can be seen on the corner. The existing connecting curves at the corner were installed in 1925. The tramcar had a number of significant accidents and was disposed of in March 1938. Understood from the donor, that the house on the corner was known as "Pax" and demolished when commercial development of the corner occurred. The donor's family operated the Purvis Real Estate on the southeast corner from the building now known as Stotts Corner. Negative No. N377 and black and white print made by a laser printer (stored in folder) of Ballarat No. 17 at the City Terminus, Sturt St. Tram has destination of "Victoria St." and a White Horse whiskey dash panel advertisement. Has the short tram stop/section pole adjacent to the tram. In the background has the SEC offices, "The Baby Shop", also Crockers and Tunbridge's stores. Note a Conductor can be seen walking across from the SEC offices to the tram. Date of photo on folder - 11/6/1960. Note: Reg Item 858 of Ron Fluck of 31/12/58 shows tram number to the side of the headlight while Wal Jack (Reg. Item 396) of 23/1/61 shows tram fitted with dash canopy lights.
