This terracotta clay roof tile was part of a consignment of tiles in the cargo of ANTARES. THE ANTARES In mid-November 1914, after the beginning of the First World War, a young local man went one evening to fish near the Bay of Islands, west of Peterborough. He later arrived home hurriedly and in an agitated state declaring: "The Germans are coming!" His family laughed and disbelieved him, as this young fellow was prone to telling fictional tales. About a month later, on December 13th 1914, local farmers Phillip Le Couteur and Peter Mathieson were riding in the vicinity, checking on cattle. Phillip Le Couteur saw what he “thought was the hull of a ship below the cliffs.” He rode to Allansford and contacted police. The next day, two Constables and Phillip Le Couteur returned to the site, where they dug a trench near the top of the cliff and sank a log in it. To this they attached a rope, which they threw down the cliff face. Constable Stainsbury and Phillip Le Couteur then made the dangerous descent down the rope on the sheer cliff face. They found wreckage strewn around a small cove and a portion of a man's body under the cliffs. The hull of the ship could be seen about 300 metres out to sea. Some of the wreckage revealed the name Antares and the remains of the ship's dinghy bore the name Sutlej. During the next two weeks and with the help of the Warrnambool lifeboat and crew, two more bodies were found. Later investigations proved that the tragic wreck was indeed that of the Antares, reported overdue on the 207th day of her voyage from Marseilles, France, to Melbourne. She was a three masted, 1749 ton iron clipper, built in Glasgow in 1888 and originally named and launched as the Sutlej. Bought in 1907 by Semider Bros. from Genoa, Italy, she was refitted and renamed Antares. It was later realised that the local lad who a month earlier had declared he had seen German guns being fired, had probably seen distress flares fired from the deck of the Antares the night she was wrecked. She was last sailed under Captain Gazedo and wrecked at what is now known as Antares Rock, near the Bay of Islands. These medals were awarded to Robert Andrew Hose, enlistment number 114 was born in Warrnambool in 1892 (parents George and Janet Hose). Prior to enlistment in World War One in 1914 Sergeant Robert Hose served with the permanent armed forces at Maribyrnong, Melbourne. He saw war service in Egypt, Gallipoli and the Western Front. In May 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal for his courage and resourcefulness and being a fine example to his men in an incident near Beaumetz les Cambrai in France. He died of his wounds a few days later. He is buried in France. These World War One medals are of high significance, particularly the Military Medal awarded for bravery to Robert Andrew Hose, a soldier born in Warrnambool. The Military Medal is a treasured item in our collection because of its rarity and association with a local World War One hero. .1 A bronze medal with a laurel wreath and printing on one side and the figure of Winged Victory on the other side. There is also an inscription around the edges. .2 A silver-coloured medal with the image of King George V of Britain on one side and the image of a figure on horseback. The medal has a metal bar at the top to which is attached a multi-coloured ribbon. .3 A silver medal with a laurel wreath, a crown, initials and printing on one side and an image of King George V of Britain on the other side .4 A black and white photograph of a soldier (R.A.Hose) with handwriting on the front and handwriting and printing on the back. John and Betty Hipwell were amongst the first to start importing Asian clothing, jewellery and homewares. Fashion by Oggi, as the sign above the door proclaimed, was located at the Paris End of Collins Street, on the south side, virtually opposite Lilian Weightman’s Le Louvre boutique. Janet Brock, who at the time was working in the Central Business District of Melbourne, had stopped to admire a mauve version of the dress that was displayed in the window, and, on making inquiries from the proprietress, ordered a made-to-measure cream-coloured copy. Her marriage occurred shortly after the death of her father, and took place on 18 December 1971 at the Kew Presbyterian Church in Cotham Road, where the Rev. Peter Mackie was the celebrant. The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories.Wedding dress, purchased by Janet Elizabeth Brock in December 1971 from Oggi of Collins Street. The wedding dress, reaching just below the knee, is lined in silk with a double outer layer of organza. The striking decoration of the monochromatic cream dress is achieved through the use of wide ruffled organza frills at the neck, on the sleeves and at the flared hem of the dress. The dress has a discrete v-neckline with small, self-covered buttons at centre front. At the back, the dress is closed with a nylon zip. A bust of Louis Braille was gifted to the Victorian Association of Braille Writers in 1929 by the sculptor Guilliame Daniel Duprat. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. This is a plain brown book with small diagonal squares pattern on the covers. La Nourriture De L'ame, ou Recueil De Prieres pour les Principales Fetes de L'annee which translates to - The Food for the Soul or Collection of Prayers for the Main Holidays of the Week. The author is Jean- Rodolphe Ostervald, pastor of the French Church of Bale. There is a drawing on the frontispiece of Jesus talking to men. At the back is a Table of Contents. Some pencil markings inside, foxing and tanning. There are two bookmarks included - One has Federal printed on it in red lettering with a rising sun pattern at each end with a French handwritten message written on the front and back. Set of two pamphlets involved the concept of the Tram 109 project, Dec. 2001. .1 - DL full colour three fold pamphlet, advertising Tram 109, new C class low floor trams and Superstops in Collins St. Also notes Metcards, how they can be validated, ticketing information and fares, location of retail outlets along the route. Has Metcard, Yarra Trams and Tram 109 logos. .2 - ditto advertising a competition to win a weekend package at Westin or Le Meridien at Rialton - buy a Metcard, fill in the entry form at the store. Has photos of the C class trams, driver console, hotels etc. Was originally contained within a plastic wrapper. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.11 books of sheet music written by various composers but all arranged by Frank Wright. 1).
