For about 36 hours, the service beyond Mitcham was maintained by steam trains connecting with electrics at Mitcham. Men are pictured putting up temporary overhead stanchions over the passenger lines around 10 a.m. on Saturday 22/6/1945 and another photograph shows the steam crane near the signal box lifting the Melbourne end of the derailed carriage. Accompanying typed sheet reads, "...shows the steam crane about outside the signal box lifting the Melbourne end of the derailed carriage". -

E. J. Swift served as the Grand Secretary during a significant era when the UAOD (Melbourne) was one of Victoria's most influential friendly societies. Swift was a key figure in the development and opening of Druids House at 407–409 Swanston Street, Melbourne. He was present when the building was officially opened on 4 April 1927 by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne.The UAOD was founded in Melbourne in 1851 as an offshoot from it's English Order. The UAOD functioned as a friendly society, providing medical, funeral, and sickness benefits to its members. The illuminated address is produced by the prominent Melbourne firm Troedel & Co. (leading lithographer).An illuminated address from the United Ancient Order of Druids Grand Lodge of Australia presented to E. J. Swift. The animal on this "card" is a kangaroo. .2) This is a flat rectangular plate of flat aluminium. The church also had the uniqueness of owning a bell tower that had not been completed. The building was heavily damaged by a bomb fell in the choir level May 31, 1944 during the Allied strikes announcing the landing. The ruins are still standing today. Allan has also written letters home from this period, describing France as a "mess" at this time. This photograph was exhibited by the Mission to Seafarers as part of the exhibition "Letters from Abroad" in 2012.This is a photograph from the Allan Charles Quinn collection which is a collection of letters and photograph depicting aspects of life at sea for a young man in the era immediately following World War II.Black and white photograph of the ruins of a gothic church bombed during the Battle of Normandy in 1944. Appointed K.C.M.G. in 1914, Sir Arthur served as Governor of Victoria from 1914-20. Lady Stanley became the first President of the Australian Red Cross, Victoria, in 1914. The foundation stone of the St Peter chapel was laid by Lady Stanley on 14 November 1916. The trowel (see item 2074) used for the laying of the stone was gifted to Lady Stanley and ended up in Toronto, Canada, where one of her daughters, Victoria was living. The trowel was presented to the Mission in 2019. A picture of the stone can be seen on the article of the Leader dating from Saturday 25 November 1916, page 25. The annual volunteers' celebration, which coincided with International Volunteers' Day, was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Lou Richards (1923-2017), former player and captain of the Collingwood football team, was the special guest MC. In this photo, Lou Richards is captured in a candid shot whilst seated at a table. The event is briefly mentioned on page 6 of the 1997 Annual Report in an article titled, 'Volunteer Co-Ordination'. George Alexander Baird was born at Oxley on June 5th, 1870, the son of Mary Ann Young McEwing and William Baird. He qualified for admission for teacher training in 1892. He is listed in the Electoral Roll for the Division of Bendigo in 1905, living in Derby and described as a school teacher. George Baird married Doreen Elizabeth Wellington on 28 December, 1940.
