The Scantlebury family moved to Cheltenham from Linton. The father, George, was a medical practitioner. His daughter, Vera, became an early woman graduate of medicine at the University of Melbourne. He was firstly a share fvarmer on 3 farms then in business - saddler and bike shop with his brother Eric. Then withG.P. Motors as the RACV man. During 1941-43 it was considered imminent that Japan's army may attempt to invade Australia. Anticipating Japanese air and submarine attacks, blackout restrictions were introduced and air raid warning instructions issued. This air-raid siren was installed on the roof of the G.P. Motors (originally Winchester & Rodwell Garage) during World War 2. This item reflect our past. World War II continues to evoke strong memories. The styling of the EJ was a radical departure from the previous model, the EK, with a lower roof line, a flatter boot and the absence of fins. This was the last car manufactured by GMH that utilised the "original" gray motor. Transmissions were a three speed manual, an automatic using the Hydra-matic. Market gardening was an integral part of the development of the area now known as Kingston. In this image there are two men standing beside a truck loaded with vegetables. Painted on the truck are the words South Rd, A & H Marriott, indicating these men are from the Marriott family. The truck appears to be a Republic Commercial Car by Republic Motor Truck Co, Michigan, c. 1916.The Marriott family arrived in Port Phillip in 1857. The Ordnance QF 18-pounder was the standard British field gun of the First World War and was used by both British and Commonwealth Forces. It was horse drawn until the army replaced horses with motor vehicles in the 1930s. The gun was still in use with the Australian Army in the early days of WW2 until replaced by more modern 25 pounder gun/howitzers.
