Horrie Petley Memorial (Tray) Donor: Deed of Gift: Horace (Horrie) Petley was an honorary life member of RBYC joining the club in 1887, later retiring from active racing aged 78 years. During these years he raced in many well-known yachts such as Ada, Sayohara, Galetea as well as the 21-footer class. He was also at one time the clubs’ Librarian. Syme and originally used for an annual combined division race RBYC to Mornington. In 1963 because of the difficulties with moorings at Mornington it was decided to conduct the race over a similar distance at the top end of the bay. The first teams’ race was won by NSW with Ken Clark and Alan Baldick sailing Petrel. In 1966 the series became an individual competition with the first being won by Victorian yacht Aeolus BJ4 by L. This statue of Hebe standing tall in Sturt Street is a religious reference to the youth. She holds aloft the cup of youth while the flask or jug of knowledge hangs in her fallen arm. Both Hebe and Ruth as iconic figures face each other across their garden beds forming a part of the sculptural vista of Sturt St. Hebe, Greek Goddess of Youth and the biblical figure Ruth, were the gift of wealthy local benefactor John Permewan, who owned carrier firm Permewan & Wright. He commissioned Charles Summers to sculpt both of the women figures. A gift to Ron Cochrane, a member of the Navy commissioning team of HMAS Voyager. The box was handmade by two brothers CLARK/E (?) from Benalla. The signatures done in ball point pen belonged to the crew attached to the portside Forward Mess. They presented the box to Cochrane who was responsible for the Mess as a token of appreciation. Ron Cochrane R46195 served as a Leading Hand with the Royal Australian Navy between 1951 and 1957 and served on numerous ships including HMAS Voyager between 6/2 - 6/10/1957. He was born on 20/3/1933 at Ballarat East. Daring class destroyer, Voyager, was the first ship of her class to enter Australian service, and the first all-welded ship to be built in Australia. During the night of 10 February 1964, Voyager and the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne collided off Jervis Bay, when the destroyer passed in front of the carrier during post-refit sea trials. Voyager was cut in two by the collision, sinking with the loss of 82 of the 314 people aboard. This was the largest loss of Australian military personnel in peacetime, and the subsequent investigations resulted in the holding of two Royal Commissions—the only time in Australian history this has occurred.Cream painted wooden box with metal hinges. This portfolio was created in response to a gift of apples from the Maldon district community in Central Victoria Australia to the children of Maldon Essex in the post World War II period. It was created for presentation to the Maldon Primary School by their UK counterpart, in gratitude, and as a symbol of cultural and political bonds. For some years before we received it the portfolio was kept in inappropriate storage and suffered some damage, and parts of it seem to have been removed. Nevertheless it is a fascinating and heartwarming document, which casts a light on the United Kingdom of the late 1940s. It is commonly known as "The Apple Book".The portfolio comprises 52 pages with various items affixed. These may be typed pages, photographs of places and people (including many small portraits), and artworks on paper and fabric. Together with he late husband, Mr Jack Tolhurst has been active in many local groups, with a special interest in the Melton & District Historical Society. This ashtray was given as a keepsake to customers of Gehrig Dairy in Wodonga. The dairy was located on the corner of Hovell Street and Wodonga Street in the late 1960s. It was owned and operated by Graham Charles Gehrig. It was customary for the dairy to give a Christmas gift each year. Other items included a thermometer and can or bottle openers. Mr. Gehrig passed away in 2019 and is buried in Wodonga. He served over 30 years as a member of the Wodonga Cemetery Trust, many of those as Chairman. The set was possibly a wedding gift from her mother-in-law, Caroline Edwards, a local business woman who was an importer of 'china and fancy goods' along with her husband Thomas Myers Edwards. The Edwards owned Staffordshire House, a business in Timor St (and later Liebig St) from 1876. The vanity set is an example of a valued possession of women at the time and could signify social standing. It was also a functional accessory used on a daily basis.The item is significant socially as an example of accessories available to and used by women in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Historically, it is linked to a local import business ‘Staffordshire House’ in Timor and later Liebig St Warrnambool, where it most likely came from. A pewter (or possibly silver-plated) three-piece vanity set that includes a hand mirror, hair brush and comb. This smoker’s cabinet is a very decorative and clever version of the item that was a novelty piece of furniture that appeared before the First World War. The contents of the cabinet are cleverly hidden behind a tambour roller door. The door slides down into the cabinet when the bottom drawer is unlocked and pulled forward, revealing two more drawers and a shelf. The bottom drawer is fitted with its own removable ashtray and a match striker. The smoker’s cabinet was a popular piece of personal furniture from the 1900s to the 1930s. The cabinet was usually designed so that its purpose was hidden. Behind the door would be a place to store all manner of things associated with smoking, such as pipes, cigars or tobacco, a removable ashtray, matches and perhaps cigar trimmers. The small cabinet was presented to Dr Angus in March 1927 by patients of the Mira hospital in Nhill, Victoria, to show their appreciation for his care. It may have been chosen as something suitable for Dr Angus to take with him when shortly afterwards sailed overseas to study at the London University College Hospital and at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. In 1928 he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, before returning to Australia. He and his wife and their young family settled in the Nhill district until moving to Warrnambool in 1939. His family donated this smoker’s cabinet, along with many other historic items, and it is now part of the W.R. Angus Collection. W.R. Angus Collection- The W R Angus Collection spans from 1885 to the mid-1900s and includes historical medical and surgical equipment and instruments from the doctors Edward and Thomas Ryan of Nhill, Victoria. Dr Angus married Gladys in 1927 at Ballarat, the nearest big city to Nhill where he began as a Medical Assistant. He was also Acting House surgeon at the Nhill hospital where their two daughters were born. He and his family moved to Warrnambool in 1939, where Dr Angus operated his own medical practice. He later added the part-time Port Medical Officer responsibility and was the last person appointed to that position. Dr Angus and his wife were very involved in the local community, including the early planning stages of the new Flagstaff Hill, where they contributed to the layout of the gardens. Dr Angus passed away in March 1970.This smoker’s cabinet is significant as an unusual and rare piece of personal vintage furniture. The tambour roller door is seldom seen on this type of cabinet. The smoker’s cabinet is connected to the history of Warrnambool, as it was owned by Dr W. R. Angus and is part of the W.R. Angus Collection, which is notable for still being located at the site connected to Doctor Angus, Warrnambool’s last Port Medical Officer. It is also connected to the history of western Victoria through its origin, being a gift from the patients of the Mira Hospital in Nhill to Dr Angus, who was the local doctor there in the 1920s and 1930s. Smoker’s cabinet; a stained and lacquered Rosewood tabletop cabinet with a tambour cover. The cabinet is lockable. The tambour shutter door rolls downwards as the bottom drawer is opened, revealing the top two drawers and shelf. The bottom drawer is divided into compartments and has a fitted metal bowl with a bar across it to use as an ashtray and an attached striking surface for lighting matches. The cupboard had decorative silver metal swinging handles on the drawers and sides. The underside of the cabinet is painted crimson. A shield-shaped silver metal commemorative plaque is attached to the top. The cupboard was a gift to Dr W R Angus on March 7th 1927 from the patients of the Mira Hospital in Nhill, Victoria, and is part of the W.R. Angus Collection.Inscription on the plaque: “Dr W.R. From the 1917 list of gifts, the credence was donated by Captain and Mrs C.D. Goldsmith, brother of Reverend Gurney Goldsmith. Cecile De la Mare Goldsmith was born in 1861 in West Brompton and was in The Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) during WWI. He died on 21 January 1917 Commander RNR & late Master in the P.O. Service died at Madeira while acting as his Majesty's Vice Consul. Angus McIntyre Cup Donor: Unknown Deed of Gift: No Angus McIntyre joined the RBYC in 1912 and was Commodore 1922/23 and again 1939/40. He was also club Treasurer for a number of years and Secretary for four years. McIntyre was also instrumental through Lord Foster in obtaining our Royal Warrant for the club in 1924. He was a very active yachtsman and skipper of a number of famous yachts including Foam, Idler, Brighton, Marie Louise and others. This home was the second cottage built by the Old Colonists' Association, and was the gift of Sydney W.J. Clark. It was completed in 1925. From the minute books: "Mr and Mrs F.J. Williams, both natives of Ballarat, offered to build a cottage on the Association's ground at PErry Park [now Charles Anderson Grove] something after a style of the Hassell Homes.
