'Skin, Surfaces and Shadows' was created by Tommaso Durante in 2004 during his stay in Bundanon (gifted to the Australian people by Arthur & Yvonne Boyd - South East Australia) as international artist in residence and it was enriched during the artist’s stay in Broome (Western Australia) in 2005. On that occasion he collected the raw materials that were subsequently wrought to develop the actual bookwork.On the edge of artistic practice and philosophical inspiration, 'Skin, Surfaces and Shadows' pushes the boundaries of art, craft and design by combining digital technologies with traditional techniques and materials. The Mitcham Post Office was erected in 1924 as a large double-storied brick residence with two shops facing Whitehorse Road. In the larger shop Bertha and Patrick Markham operated a mixed newsagency business and the local Post office. Bertha Markham was appointed Postmistress. Documentary evidence records that in 1890 William H. Jarman, accountant, was the first owner and occupier of 'Kalimna', a substantial rwo-storey residence; it having an initial N.A.V. of £1503. In the following year the N.A.V. for the eleven-roomed property had increased to £2504 indicating that the building had been completed. Jarman is recorded as owning and occupying 'Kalimna' until at least 1910,Colour photographic positive of one of 'Kalimna'. The house is typical of the late Victorian period with polychromatic brick walls, a two storeyed, cast iron decorated verandah that spans two facades, and a polygonal bay window extending to the front. Mrs. Henry Hill (nee Georgina Reynolds of Research), mother of Arthur Ernest Hill (1891-1961). Taken outside the old Hill family home in Bridge Street, south side between Susan and Bolton Streets. Demolished many years prior to 1965. Georgina Reynolds (1864-1927) married Henry Hill (1862-1948) in 1884. Arthur Ernest Hill was married to Edna Hill. Edna Hill donated the postcard to the Shire of Eltham in 1965, four years after her husband Arthur Ernest Hill's death. At the time she did not know the identity of the others in the photo but it is possible that it is Henery Hill and baby Arthur Ernest Hill.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. By 1881 Bunguluke was a small settlement as recorded, December 5, in the Charlton "Mercury". It reports that in that year Draper's Store, Hotel and Post Office and residence at Bunguluke North was totally destroyed by fire. For years now there has been little sign of community life with houses few and far between and acreages have gone into larger holdings. The map references land blocks and owners for that era.This important map shows the local land ownership and local features that existed in 1923. Looking westerly across the Yarra from Westerfolds Park you can see a large and imposing building at the top of the escarpment above the river. This is the Christian Brothers Training Centre at Lower Plenty and known as Amberley. This significant building dates from 1930 when it was the rather grand residence of Oswald Darch. The Amblers has a large family: Gordon Frederick William (1898-1910); Malcolm George (1900-1965); Daisy May (1904-1904); Leon Verde (1904-1904); Garnet Leslie (1904-1904); Ruby Isobel (1906-2004); Hector Leon (1909-1994); Sylvia Beatrice (1912 - ); Daisy May (1914-2009); Ronald Edward (1915-1990); Jean Mavis (1918-2001) plus Dorothy (dates not known). Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her photos are held in the Society Collection. The Wodonga Post Office was constructed on the corner of Sydney Road (High Street) and South Street in 1874. It was Wodonga’s second Post Office. The original post office opened on June 1, 1856 near Wodonga Creek. This building was originally built of red brick, although it was later painted over in white. It had an attached residence in South Street and was connected to it by a door. The residence was later demolished to move the mail boxes which had faced High Street, to South Street. The brick Telephone Exchange was constructed in 1946 behind the Post Office but separated from it. It operated as a manual exchange until the late 1960’s or early 1970’s. In 1985 a new post office was opened further south in High Street. This building, greatly renovated, is now part of the Wodonga Community College.This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century. This set of six original chairs (2 armchairs + 4 chairs) along with the dining table was originally used in the dining room of the Manse, the chaplains' residence. Upon completion of the Institute building in 1917, the Goldsmiths moved in after living for many uncomplaining years in a flat on Australia Wharf, which had “many disadvantages and discomforts”. It was photographed in the Manse dining room by the reverend or Mrs Weller c. 1926.It is not known when they were purchased or gifted. But they are likely originating from Europe.
