The Siddeley Street institute, designed by renown architect Walter Butler was built in 1907. The foundation stone was laid in February 1907 by Lord Northcote and the institute was opened in December the same year.The Siddeley Street Seamen's Institute is the first central structure to be built in central Melbourne on the banks of the Yarra River as the shipping was moving from Hobson's Bay to the city centre. Originally planned and budgeted for in the mid 1880s and petitioned by Ships masters in 1897 this was a long awaited project for the Mission.Sepia toned photograph depicting the Siddeley Street facility under construction. The book was used as a visitors book for the early Mission to Seafarers. The first date in the book is the 13th of December, 1907, although there are almost six pages of signatures before this. The last signature is dated the 28th of June, 1951. The book documents some of the most significant moments of the Central Institute: - the Opening Ceremony of the "new" Mission to Seafarers building in September 1917. - the signature of HRH Edward, then Prince of Wales, and a newspaper clipping, detailing his visit, during has Australian tour in 1920. - the visit by the Governors General including HRH the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester in 1945. Also registered: the Australian Chaplains conference attendees of both 1936 and 1949. Many supporters, ladies from the Guild and seafarers signed the book.The book is a significant record of VIP visitors to the Mission to Seafarers 1907 to 1951. It records respective Opening Ceremonies for Mission Buildings of both 1907 and 1917 and attendees. The book also documents a visit from Edward, Prince of Wales in 1920, travelling on the H.M.S "Renown". The Loyal Orange Institution of Victoria was established in 1843. As a society composed of Protestants, it works to support and defend the Protestant faith. The Institution is named in honour of King William III, Prince of Orange (1650-1702) and his achievements for civil and religious liberty. The first Orange Lodge in Victoria was founded in 1843, following a sectarian protest in Elizabeth Street Melbourne over the election of a Protestant candidate to the Legislative Council. By the 1890s there were 169 branches in Victoria, engaged in political lobbying for mainstream Protestant issues like temperance, Sunday observance, opposition to state aid for church schools, and opposition to any expansion of the political influence of Roman Catholics. The monthly meetings had an element of secrecy, as members wore regalia and followed a simple ritual. No Catholics could join. Robert Ulmann was born in Zurich, Switzerland, where he studied sculpture and painting, exhibiting annually with the National Art Society of Switzerland and in Paris, Munich and Stockholm. He migrated to Canada in 1956 and became a Canadian citizen. After working on the restoration of sculpture on the west wing of the Parliament Buildings Ottawa, he took up a Government appointment as one of six artist advisers to the Eskimos, initiating handicraft and sculpture programs in isolated settlements across the Central Arctic. He arrived in Australia with his Australian wife, Helen, in 1969, after two adventurous years backpacking and sketching through the United States, Central and South America and the South Pacific. From 1970 to 1972 he was employed by the Northern Territory Administration as a manual arts instructor to the aboriginal people of Docker River, a remote settlement west of Ayers Rock. A series of drawings from this period was exhibited by the Department of the Interior in Canberra, Sydney and Adelaide. Robert Ulmann’s paintings and prints of wildlife from Australia and overseas fill a beautiful studio overlooking the famous Logans Beach whale nursery at Warrnambool in the Western District of Victoria. His previous studio and home, together with 13 years of field sketches and his best work collected together for two books were destroyed by the Ash Wednesday fires at Naringal in 1983. Rob exhibited in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth as well as in the Regional Galleries of Warrnambool, Ballarat, Portland and Horsham, and, among numerous prizes, he won the award for watercolour at six of the annual exhibitions of the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia, between 1978 and 1983. Although his principal interest was in drawing and painting, he retained a fascination with sculpture. His works range from two stone fountains with figures commissioned by the City of Zurich, while he was still a student, to a 4 ½ ton sculpture in bluestone commissioned in 1977 as a memorial to Sir Fletcher Jones., a five metre representation of whale tails in steel, and a life-size bronze of St. John of God commissioned for a private hospital.Image of a goat beginning to rise from a seated position, possible struggling out of mud. Beaumaris includes two early estates in the parish of Moorabbin developed by Josiah Holloway from 1852. Named Beaumaris Town and Beaumaris Estate (after the pastoral run in the area and ultimately after Beaumaris in Wales), the lots comprising them were marketed by Mr Holloway's suggesting that the railway was imminent and a canal would be built. The township developed slowly, a Post Office opened on 1 March 1868, but was replaced next month by Gipsy Village office (now Sandringham) In 1862 Beaumaris was one of the early settler communities within the boundaries of the Moorabbin District Roads Board , the region’s first local government authority. This tea towel was manufactured in 1978 in Ireland and shipped to Australia. This was in a period when the C.W.A. was the major women's organisation which had the greatest influence amongst rural women (especially in isolated areas). This was a period when broad based communications were mainly by radio,women orientated magazines and the telephone. The relay of television to "remote" rural areas was not yet established. The CWA was therefore a very important organisation that catered exclusively to women's needs. The C.W.A. motto "Honour our God, Loyalty to the throne, Service to the country, Through country women, For country women, By country women." The atmosphere was one of "sisterhood" and covered nearly all the needs of rural based women. This one organisation incorporated knowledge and learning targeting women who physically may be isolated but not mentally. On the tea towel are portrayed all the activities that would be beneficial to rural women.This tea towel with its respective motifs is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as it related especially to women who felt the limitations of social interactions within a rural area. This tea towel represents a era where communications was relatively based on radio, magazines, books and limited telephone access. Within these restrictive interactive communication levels, the isolation of a "back o' Bourke" location applied tremendous mental fatigue on women more than on men.This CWA Victoria Golden Jubilee (1928-1978) tea towel is made from Irish flax at the Blackstaff Flax Spinning and Weaving factory. It is therefore of high quality and very durable. The major colours projecting from a light blue background are red, yellow, green, orange and black. The motives portrayed the activities of the CWA in 1978. These activities are embroidery, crocheting, dress making, knitting, cooking, art, macrame, drama, music, patchwork, toy making and community relief, pennies for friendship, emergency relief and welfare, residential club flats, the thanks giving and Papua New Guinea.The main or central theme of this tea towel is presented in the central area within three rings. "1928" on the left and "1978" on the right. Football match at Eltham Central Park between Eltham and Heidelberg Newsletter No. 216, May 2014 May Excursion – The 1901 Eltham Railway Walk The railway from Heidelberg to Eltham was opened in 1902. Over the previous year railway construction cut a curving swathe through Josiah Holloway’s 1851 Little Eltham subdivision. The survey plans for the railway show the owners and occupiers of land within Little Eltham affected by the railway alignment and for some distance each side. The plans show houses and other buildings but development at that time was rather sparse. Copies of these plans from the State Library of Victoria collection have been provided to the Society by Alan Sheehan. For our walk on 3rd May we intend to follow the railway from the Eltham Station to Ryans Road, which was the boundary of the adjoining Montmorency Farm. The return will be by way of nearby streets. Along the way we will discuss the details shown on the railway plans as well as more recent railway documents and photographs. At the conclusion and if time permits we can inspect the historical display at the Eltham Station. The walk is about 3 km in length and will take about 2.5 hours. These 4 black and white photos are very clear and are of Bogong in the 1940s when the Kiewa Hydro electric Scheme was being constructed. Bogong was the first construction site. Bogong was a township and construction site for the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme built by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. These photos in the early 1940s (during WW2) tell the story of fire, flood and living conditions with the inference of transport being horses in 1940 compared with its development in 1944.1. This item of military uniform was worn by Squadron Leader (SQNLDR) Bernard Farley during his period of Full Time service in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) between 27 January 1976 and 02 March 1997. Bernard joined the RAAF as an Airmen was trained and employed as a Clerk Supply (CLKSPL) between 1996 - 1977. He undertook officer cadet training at the Army Officer Cadet School in 1978 and was commissioned into the Ground Defence Category on the 09 December 1978, where he served for 18 years and rose to the rank of SQNLDR. Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) 1A Service Dress Uniform 1A - Tunic (Jacket - Blue Grey). This uniform was in the period 1966 - 2001 as the primary uniform. Service Dress is approved for wear as either ceremonial dress or working dress when employed in office or business type environments. The Tunic consists of a jacket has a lapel collar, with two external chest pockets and exposed pocket flaps, two side jacket pockets with external flaps and two internal jacket pockets positioned just below the external chest pockets. There is a crescent shaped cloth badge 'AUSTRALIA' sown at the side/top of each sleeve and Squadron Leader - rank stripes sown around each sleeve on the upper wrist area. The Tunic is closed with four gold buttons down the front. Each button is inserted through a small round hole sewn into the right side of the tunic front and held in place at the rear with a safety pin. There are four corresponding button holes sewn into the left front of the tunic to fasten the jacket in the normal closed position when worn. Maker: Australian Government Clothing Factory (A.G.C.F.) - Coburg Victoria The Tunic has two military decorations attached above the exterior left chest pocket. The decoration are: 1. Conspicuous Service Medal - Yellow and Green right sloping diagonal strips 2.. Defence Service Medal (with one clasp) - Blue and Gold upright stripes and round metal clasp positioned centrally. The DSM is awarded for 15 years service and a clasp is awarded for each additional 5 years service.

As an historic army uniform with an association to Victoria this item is of local historic and social significance. It is also in very good condition. Woolen khaki peaked hat has a central head band with solid peak connected to the lower front of the head band. The top is high at the front and protrudes out from the headband about 3cm on all sides. There is a brown leather chinstrap on the lower front of the headband above the peak and this has a slide extension that can be enlarged to go under the neck to keep the hat in position in high winds. The chin strap in connected to the headband with two plastic button that have queens crown above a map of Australia. Affixed to the front of the headband above the peak is the Artillery Corps metal hat badge in gold colouring. The interior of the top of the hat has a cotton lining under the woollen exterior and then a plastic protective lining to avoid sweat bleeding onto the exterior. Amherst, a former gold rush town, is located 13 kilometres south-west of Avoca on the Pyrenees Highway in the Pyrenees Shire in Victoria, Australia. It is 183 kilometres north west of Melbourne. The police station, in Camp Street, opened in 1853 and was originally in the District of Castlemaine. In 1857 it came under the District of Avoca, in 1858 the District of Carisbrook, in 1859 the District of Avoca, in 1866 the District of Maryborough, in 1879 the South Western District, and Central District in 1883. The station closed on 8 August 1892. In 1861 the station was staffed by 1 Mounted Constable, 1 Foot Senior Constable and 2 Foot Constables. Altona North Police Station opened on 7 October 1979 as a new twenty-four police station and was the District Headquarters of Altona District. It comprised a C.I.B. and a Community Policing Squad. It is located at 72 Cooper Avenue, on the corner of McArthurs Road. Armadale is an inner suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 7 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Stonnington local government area. Armadale Police Station opened, in Melbourne Police District, on 11 May 1885. Its original location is unknown, but in 1890 it is listed in the Sands & McDougall directory as at 295 Hight Street. From 1985-1920 it was located at 20/22 Auburn Grove, 1925-1930 at 769 High Street and 1935-1946 at 3 Cheel Street. The station closed on 28 January 1946. The sub-division east of Orrong Rd was incorporated into Malvern Sub-district and west of Orrong Road into Prahran Sub-district. In a special 1930 issue of the Victoria Police Gazette the Armadale Police Station was described as a seven-roomed brick dwelling with a tiled roof on land measuring 127' x 104' x 98'. There was also a bathroom and W.C., a wash-house, office, and a lock-up (one cell). This is probably a description of the Cheel Street police station. Cr. G. C. Dreverman J.P. and President of Eltham Shire Council gives a speech at the opening of the Eltham Library in August 1971. Cr Dreverman was a Councillor for the Central Riding of the Shire of Eltham since 1966. The Eltham Branch of the Heidelberg Regional Library Service was opened on 17 August 1971 by Victoria’s Chief Secretary R. J. Hamer. The library was designed by the firm Leith and Bartlett and was the southern wing of the Shire of Eltham Offices in Main Road Eltham. Visitors entered a “book plaza” which embodies the display techniques of a bookshop. Through this area was located a quieter area for reference and the more “purposeful” reader. The library was opened as part of the Shire of Eltham’s centenary celebrations. The library and Shire Offices were demolished exactly 25 years later in 1996.
