These nine photographs of contractors felling a sequoia Californian redwood tree was taken at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 16th of September 1994. Although 23 photos were taken at the time, 14 were not scanned due to their similarity to the nine featured photos. Two sequoia Californian redwood trees were planted at the front entrance of Fortuna Villa in the early days of gold mining magnate George Lansell’s occupation in the 1870’s. They were of immense proportion and much admired during the Lansell era and RA Svy’s occupation from 1942 to 1996. In these early days of Army occupation, the trees were lopped due to concerns of their size and proximity to the Villa. The felling of the tree in 1994 was considered unsafe due to perceptions of disease. These perceptions were upsetting to staff, as some believed that although there were a few dead branches, the tree was OK. As the tree had a noticeable lean, measurements were taken indicating the tree was stable. A sequoia sapling was eventually planted as a replacement to the diseased tree. It was decided to mill and store the timber of the felled tree on-site due to its historical significance. Although future uses were not determined at the time, the timber was eventually used to construct display cabinets and souvenir pens. When Defence decided to relocate geospatial production to a new facility in Junortoun an outer suburb of Bendigo in 2008, the sequoia timber was used as a beautiful feature in the front foyer as well as several feature walls within the building, providing a historical connection Fortuna Villa.This is a set of nine photographs of contractors felling a Sequoia (Californian redwood) tree at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 16th of September 1994. This collection of five photos was most likely taken in c1980. The AUTOMAP 1 computer assisted cartography and mapping system was introduced in 1975. The components of AUTOMAP 1 were the Input Sub-System of four Wild B8s stereoplotters and three Gradicon digitising tables, the Optical Line Following Sub-System – Gerber OLF, the Verification Sub-System – Gerber 1442 drum plotter, the General Purpose Sub-system – HP21MX computer and the Output Sub-System – Gerber 1232 flatbed plotter). The first map was published in 1978 (Strickland 3665-3, 1:50,000). AUTOMAP 1 was the first computer assisted cartography and mapping system utilised by the Survey Corps and was the first system used by Australian mapping organisations. This is a set of seven photographs of map grid production using co-ordinatorgraphs at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Bendigo. c1960s to 1970s. The Aristo Co-ordinatorgraph introduced in 1962 was a large heavy steel framed light table with a scribing head that moved in a XY direction using a vernier calibrated measuring scale to 0.001 of an inch. Whilst hand operated it was much quicker and accurate than manual grid and graticule calculation, plotting and scribing. Mapping PNG presented the Regiment with many challenges. WO1 Farrington and CPL John Dean developed computer software for the digitally controlled co-ordinatorgraph, the Calcomp 718 Flatbed Plotter. Much time was saved by automatically plotted cartographic grids and graticules, and automatically draw base compilation sheets complete with aerial triangulated stereo model control. This could be used for a number of maps and was the first step towards map automation. SGT Bill Boyd appearing in photo .1P reach the rank of WO1 and for 11 years was the technical warrant officer at the Detachment Army Survey Regiment located at Bonegilla, Victoria. He was awarded the OAM, the Order of Australia Medal for the development of the Flexiflow quality control system. This system comprised a series of job plans and charts linked to a task allocation to resource magnetic planning board. Using critical path analysis and task prioritisation, complex job planning was efficiently scheduled, and re-prioritisations readily made. Reproduction requirements were effectively coordinated by way of weekly courier to the Army Survey Regiment. Supervisors and technicians fully embraced the system as they could understand their role, others around them and the positive production achievements. Bendigo. Orthophoto mapping provided the Survey Corps with the capability to produce map products quickly in the event of a crisis. These are four photographs of equipment used by the Army Survey Regiment to produce orthophotomaps. The Wild GZ1 orthophoto projector was introduced in 1973 and was the first equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography. Height profiles were originally produced on a PEB8 Stereo profiler and later were software generated. Photos of the PEB8 are available in Victorian Collections item 6222.17P, photos .5P and .6P. In the same era the IBM 1130 computer; OMI/Nistri AP/C-3 analytical plotter with coordinatograph, OP/C orthophoto projector and Zeiss Planimat D2 stereoplotters were introduced. Orthorectification is the process of removing geometric distortions and scale errors/variations from images. Images have tilt and relief distortions that make it difficult to compare accurately a map and an image of the same geographic area. Once an image is orthorectified, features on the image are shown in their planimetric locations. These six photographs of Printer Technicians performing quality checks off the printing press were probably taken circa 1980s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. c1980s. Although the photos are not annotated, most personnel are positively identified. Quality control was applied progressively in the printing process, with registration checks and adjustments between colours on the first pass. In these photos a quality check was performed off the press before the printing press was prepared with the new set of printing plates and colours for the next pass. This is a collection of eight photographs of Air Survey Squadron personnel operating aerotriangulation equipment at the Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna, Bendigo, c1993. PUG4 devices were used by technicians to stereoscopically view the photography containing the survey control points and the mapping aerial photography. The Control points were transferred from the control photography to the mapping diapositives of aerial photography by drilling their locations into the photographic emulsion. The Zeiss (Jena) Stecometer analytic stereocomparator for air photography shown in photo .1P was introduced at Air Survey Squadron in 1963. Wild PUG4 point transfer devices shown in photos .2P to .4P were introduced in c1968 superseding the PUG2 devices. Its variomat lens system provided improved retention of map feature linear weights during the camera reduction process. This is a set of 14 photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 5th of June 1979 by the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB. He was accompanied by his wife. They were escorted through the production areas of the Army Survey Regiment by the CO LTCOL Bob Skitch. Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB was an esteemed Australian Army officer, who was CGS from 1977 to 1982. Upon retirement from the Army in 1982, he was appointed to the position of Governor of South Australia from 1982 to 1991. LTCOL Bob Skitch was the CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1976 to 1980. Also featuring in these photos is MAJ Peter Eddy, who was the OC of Air Survey Squadron. He was later promoted to LTCOL and was CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1981 to 1982. This is a set of 14 photographs of RA Svy technicians operating photogrammetric equipment in Air Survey Squadron, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo; and the School of Military Survey Bonegilla c1960s to c1980s. The Wild B9 stereo plotter were introduced in 1962 and the Wild B8 stereo plotter was introduced in 1966. The Wild B9 and B8 stereo plotters were used for plotting topographic detail and contours. These analogue machines were manually controlled by adjusting the control knobs for the orientation of the 3D image. The B9s used a four and a half square, and the B8s used a nine-inch square photo image on a film or glass diapositive which allowed highly accurate extraction of map features. At first, plotting with B8 and B9 stereo plotters was undertaken at the aerial photography scale of 1:80,000 in pencil onto a controlled plotting sheet. Sheets were then inked up and reduced photographically to the 1: 100,000 publication scale for scribe impression production. In the early days topographic detail and contours were plotted with a pencil or ink pen mounted at the far end of the pantograph arm. The plotting procedure was upgraded to direct plotting in ink with photographic reduction to publication scale. In 1975 four B8s were upgraded with tri-axis locaters as part of the Input Sub-system to enable digital extraction to AUTOMAP 1’s topographic database. When AUTOMAP 2 was introduced in 1982 these B8s were upgraded, and additional machines added to expand the Army Survey Regiment’s digital capture capability. These eight photos of the Army Survey Regiment’s Tug-of-War Team were most likely taken at Simpson Barracks, Watsonia in circa 1989. There is no information available on why the unit sent the team to Melbourne, the occasion, and the winner of this contest. It may have been a military athletics carnival held to commemorate Australia’s First Fleet bi- centenary, noting there was other members of Army Svy Regt on the bus who were not part of this team. The team’s coach was WO1 Ken Slater. This is a set of 26 black & white photographs of troops from the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment undertaking ceremonial drills at a military funeral held at Mildura in 1968. As a senior officer of field rank (Colonel or above) led the funeral procession, it is presumed the unknown deceased soldier was also a highly ranked field officer. These five photographs were most likely taken in the 1970s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Photos .1P to .3P are annotated with the name of the technicians written on the back. Although Photo .4P is not annotated the technician is positively identified. In these five photos the technician is applying a UV-sensitive pigmented dye emulating one of the print colours to a white opaque polyester sheet mounted on a rotating table in a whirler. The coated sheet was dried before placement in a vacuum light frame beneath a stud registered map negative. They were then exposed to a carbon arc lamp. If there was more than one negative – typical for a type impression or 1st proof, the process was repeated for the other negatives of that print colour. There was a single exposure for composite negatives which was typical for the 2nd and final proof - the pre-press proof. The sheet was removed and washed with water and dried leaving the exposed colour impression. The technician repeated this process using process or spot dyes for remaining publication colours. Type impressions were a combination of the map grid and the topographic features in their correct print colours, forming a base for the cartographer to accurately position map names and symbols on a clear film overlay. The pre-press proof was a cost-effective way of producing a one-off visual copy of the map or chart product. It enabled cartographers to perform a quality inspection and correct any faults before publication. These four photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio at Bendigo c1982. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The two sports featuring in these photos are touch football and tug-of-war. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. This set of 13 colour photographs of a contingent of 38 personnel from the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo sent to Castlemaine on the 13th of August 1995 to support a parade held commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Allied Victory in the Pacific. Army Survey Regiment Administrative Instruction 33/95 is stored with the photos, providing a nominal roll of the contingent involved in the parade.
