This is a reminder of the Le Couteur family who feature in the history of Warrnambool and district. George Le Couteur, a son of the pioneer Le Couteur family, was a chemist in 19th century Warrnambool and the family had a long association with the Nirranda district. Information on the history of this knife and sheaf is not known. They were popular items for boys and young men to carry, especially when working in the bush or fishing. They are still in use today. These items have no known provenance and are useful for display only This is a belt knife, much rusted with a curved blade and a brown metal handle, silver-coloured at the top and end and brown-coloured with red and black bands near the end. The handle has a metal screw at the tip. The knife is in a leather sheaf or holder which is curved to suit the shape of the knife. It has stitching on the curved section with metal studs, two slots to enable the sheaf to be attached to a belt and a circular leather strop with a metal stud to hold the knife in place. No information is available on the history of these six examples of pennyweights. A pennyweight was a unit of mass that was equal in weight to 20 grains, one twentieth of an ounce and one 240th of a Troy pound. The abbreviation for a pennyweight is ‘dwt’ (denarius weight). Pennyweights were and are used in the weighing of precious metals and are still used by dentists in the measurement of the metal used in dental crowns etc. These items are of antiquarian interest and will be useful for displays. These are six pennyweights of varying weights – 5 pennyweights, 4, 3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6. They appear to be made of brass and the 5, 4 and 3 pennyweights are rounded off rectangles in shape with eight sides. This book gives the history of the Warrnambool Rowing Club. The club was formed in 1873. In 1885 Mrs Fanny Nelson built a boathouse on the Hopkins River bank and leased it to the Warrnambool Rowing Club. A two-storeyed building for the Rowing Club was opened in 1889 and today the club operates from Proudfoot’s Boathouse near the mouth of the river. This is an important book as it details the history of the Warrnambool Rowing Club. Rowing has been a popular recreational pursuit in Warrnambool since the early days of settlement as the proximity of two rivers makes this possible and the Warrnambool Rowing Club has a history well worth recording. This is a soft-cover book of 85 pages with a white cover with a black and white photograph on the front of the old rowing club sheds on the Hopkins River and several images on the back cover of Warrnambool in the 19th century. This is a Federation certificate showing the signatures of the Shire of Warrnambool personnel who signed the addresses presented by the Municipalities of Victoria to the Duke of York and the Governor-General in 1901 on the occasion of the Federation of the six colonies in Australia. This was a highly significant event in Australia’s history and Warrnambool shared in this occasion by voting overwhelmingly in the Referendum in favour of Federation. This certificate shows the official local government acceptance of the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia and the regard for matters of Empire and the representatives of British Royalty. It also has the signatures of the Shire personnel, many of whom were prominent men in the Warrnambool district in the early 20th century, especially Gideon Nicol, James Lindsay, Alexander Rollo and John Glasgow. It was reported in the Warrnambool Standard at the time that this certificate had been designed and illuminated by Victor Henry, an art student from Warrnambool and the son of one of Warrnambool’s Councillors, This is a certificate indicating that the Shire of Warrnambool Councillors signed the Addresses presented by the Municipalities of Victoria to the Duke of York and the Governor- General in January 1901. The certificate is mounted on card with paper binding on the edges and contains the signatures of the President of the Shire of Warrnambool, nine Councillors and the Shire Secretary. It is highly ornamented with lithographs of the crests of the six States of Australia, an archway , an image of a woman representing the British Empire, a lion, a British flag and the crest of ‘United Australia’ and other symbols. This is a copy of Bromfield’s 1856 map of Warrnambool and district. James Astley Bromfield was a pioneer settler in Warrnambool. He established a chemist’s shop in 1854, initially situated in Timor Street. He moved his shop to Liebig Street with a new building erected in 1875. Bromfield was a prominent resident of Warrnambool (Shire Councillor, Fire Brigade member, Cricket Club member, associated with horse racing etc). He was interested in preserving the history of Warrnambool and this map he produced in 1856 was an example of this interest.This is a copy only but this 1856 map is of prime importance as it contains the names of the original landowners of land in north Warrnambool and the surrounding district. Augustus Bostock was the 9th child of Robert & Rachael Bostock of Vaucluse Epping Forest, Van Diemen’s Land. He was only 4 years old when his mother died. He was inspired by his father to seek his fortune in the Western District of Victoria. He arrived around 1850. He married Margaret Aitkin in July 1865. Augustus owned several properties in the district and leased others. He sat on the court of Warrnambool, Mortlake or Hexham as required. He resided at Marramook in Hawkesdale and later moved to Vaucluse in Hopetoun Road Warrnambool, where he died in 1920 at the age of 87. He was involved in many aspects of life in the Western District, racing, cricket, and social activities to name a few. This death certificate is for Margaret Bostock, the wife of Augustus Bostock. She was the daughter of James and Mary Aitkin and one of three sisters to marry three of the Bostock brothers. Margaret and Augustus had six children, Jane, James, Ernest, John Augustus, Mary and Rachel. Margaret died in 1919. This is one of a number of documents which relate to the Bostock family who were one of the most important pioneering families of the Western District. These two volumes are seminal historical writings published in 1888. The author of Volume One is Alexander Sutherland (1852-1902), described as ‘a forgotten Australian intellectual’. Born in Scotland, Sutherland was a teacher, poet, biographer, novelist, scientist, philosopher and journalist. In 1902 he was the Registrar of Melbourne University and he was the Secretary of the Royal Society of Victoria. With his brother, George, he wrote a history of Australia and New Zealand which sold 100,000 copies, the first best-selling Australian history. His book, ‘The Origin and Growth of the Moral Instinct’ influenced Russian philosophical thought. This is a most significant book as it contains short biographical notes on a great number of early (19th century) residents of the Warrnambool district. As well as listing information on Warrnambool identities it includes information on residents of Purnim, Wangoom, Dennington, Panmure, Garvoc, Framlingham, Winslow, Yangery, Woodford, Mailors Flat, Grasmere, Bushfield and Allansford. It is a great resource for researchers today. The two volumes also contain illustrations pertaining to the areas around Warrnambool and are of great historical as well as artistic interest. These are two volumes of ‘Victoria and Its Metropolis’. They are leather bound with a black cover, heavily ornamented in gold around the edges of the cover and with the printed material also in gold lettering in an ornamental pattern. The spine of the covers are brown with gold ornamental patterns and printing. Volume One has 594 pages with 258 illustrations , all black and white and this volume contains writings on the early days of the colony up to 1888 and chapters on the arts, churches, education, industries, science etc. in Victoria. Volume Two has 822 pages with many black and white illustrations and chapters on the regions in Victoria and biographical notes on the pioneer settlers of these districts. Both volumes are in a very tattered condition with many loose pages and the leather binding much torn and with some parts missing. It has been meticulously compiled from a variety of official war records and local information and is the most comprehensive work available on the records of World War One enlistments from Warrnambool and district. Australia’s military involvement in World War One was highly significant and a most important event in the history of our growth as a nation and our newfound place on the world stage. This book is very important as it gives a comprehensive coverage of the people from Warrnambool and district who enlisted in World War One. This Bible belonged to Thomas Wong Ch(e)ong who was the catechist at the Warrnambool Chinese Church in Ryot Street, Warrnambool. In 1892 Thomas Wong Cheong was appointed by the Foreign Missions Committee of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria as the catechist to the Chinese community in Warrnambool and district. The Chinese Church in Ryot Street was established in the early 1890s and continued until the late 1920s when the numbers of the local Chinese community had declined. Thomas Wong Cheong and his wife worked tirelessly in the Warrnambool district until his death in 1923. No information has been found on James Yee Keet. This is a book of high significance because it belonged to Thomas Wong Cheong who holds an important place in Warrnambool’s history because of his work with the Warrnambool Chinese community over a period of 30 years. This is a leather-covered book with four gold Chinese characters on the spine and the back cover (the front cover for Chinese readers). The leather on the cover extends over the pages and folds inwards to almost enclose the pages. The pages are gilt-edged. The inscription is handwritten in blue ink. The book contains a fold-out map of the Mediterranean Sea area and all the text is in printed Chinese characters. This collection of short stories by Mary Gaunt has been edited and published by Bronwen Hickman. Mary Gaunt (1861-1942) was a writer of novels, travel books, short stories and other articles. She was known internationally for her writings in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Born in Chiltern, Victoria, she was the first woman to study at Melbourne University, travelled extensively in West Africa and China in areas rarely visited by white women and published 26 books. From 1894 to 1900 Mary Gaunt lived in Warrnambool where her husband, Hubert Lindsay Miller, was a local doctor. Some of her writings were produced while she was in Warrnambool and some have local content. This book, although a modern reprint, is important as the only collection of the short stories of the internationally-known author, Mary Gaunt that we have in our collection. Mary Gaunt not only lived and wrote in Warrnambool for some years but also used local places, people and events in her writings. One of the stories in ‘Life at Deadman’s’ (‘The Humbling of Sergeant Mahone’) is based on the events in the late 19th century when whisky was being made illegallyin the Nirranda district. Mary Gaunt apparently had met the real main character in this saga. This is a soft cover book of 178 pages. The cover is yellow with an image in sepia tones of Mary Gaunt. This book is a 19th Century treatise on aids to navigation. It belonged to John Cowtan who held land near the Cassady's Bridge area in Caramut Road today (he was related to the Cassady family) and who is mainly important in the history of Port Fairy. Captain John Cowtan was a ship's master for John Griffiths and a Launceston entrepreneur and ship owner between 1839 and 1844. In 1847 he went into partnership with John Bland, establishing a merchant's business with riverside buildings at the Port Fairy wharf. He left Port Fairy in the 1860s. The date of John Cowtan's signature in this book is 1849 (certainly a very early one in our history) and inside the front cover he has written notes about the local weather, mainly as it affected sailing conditions in late 1849 and early 1850. This set of books was given to Cornelius (Con) O’Mahony in 1883 when he won the Bowen Prize Essay Competition awarded by the University of Melbourne. The Bowen Prize was established in 1874 by the Governor of Victoria, Sir George Bowen. This was then awarded annually to the person who was a student or ex-student of the University of Melbourne who wrote the best essay on matters relating to British and British Empire history or literature. Con O’Mahony’s essay was on the Federation of the Australian Colonies. Con O’Mahony, born in Bendigo, studied at Melbourne University in the early 1880s. He was a lawyer in Kepler Street, Warrnambool from the late 1880s to his death in 1920, firstly in partnership with E. Klingender and later operating under the name of O’Mahony and Murray. These books are most important because: 1. They are a very attractive set of books with considerable antiquarian value. 2. They were given as the prize for winning the 1883 Bowen Prize at Melbourne University – a prestigious award still today. 3. They were given for a prize-winning essay on the advantages of Federation in Australia. The essay was written 17 years before Federation and so they forms an interesting part of the Australia-wide campaign for Federation. 4. The prize books were awarded to Con O’Mahony who played his part in Warrnambool’s late 19th century and early 20th century history as a prominent lawyer in the town for over 30 years.These ten volumes of books have hard covers in a dark red colour with a gold leather spine and leather reinforcements on the edges of the front and back covers. The front cover has an embossed gold emblem of the University of Melbourne and the spine has ornamental gold, black and red patterning and gold lettering. The insides of the cover have blue, red and orange mottled patterning and this is repeated on the edging of the pages. There are approximately 400 pages in each volume. A typed page on the Bowen Prize is inserted in the front of the first volume and the inscription on every volume is handwritten in black ink. The covers are a little scuffed and slightly torn in some volumes. This book belonged to a Marian Adams from Limerick but, unfortunately no information has been found on this person or the connection to Warrnambool. There were several families in the Warrnambool area with the name ‘Adams’ in the 19th century. This book is kept as an interesting 19th century book but it will be of greater interest if information is found on Marian Adams. This is a hard cover book of 516 pages. The cover is brown leather with gold embossed ornamentation and gold lettering on the spine. The pages are gilt-edged and the cover has become partly detached from the binding. The pages are much stained and the cover is very rubbed. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. There are eight engravings on steel in black and white and all are protected with white tissue. This stock measurer would have been used on a farm during the first half of the 20th century. A similar item with decimal measurements may perhaps be used today though mechanized weighing machines are now available. This stock tape measure has no known local significance but it is an interesting item and has its place in the history of agriculture in the district. It will be useful for display. This is a glassfibre measuring tape (imperial measure) in a circular brass holder. The tape has a metal clip at the end. The tape is yellow on one side (measuring weight of pigs) and red on the other side (measuring weight of cattle). The holder has a winding mechanism on the top attached by a brass screw. There is a knob on the winder to hold while turning the winder to bring out the tape to the measurement required and to retract it back into the holder. The holder has a black ridged pattern around the sides. The provenance of this book is unclear but it is kept because of its early printing (1844) and because of its association with the Freckleton families. This is a soft cover book of 240 pages. This cup, saucer and plate are part of a tea set. It was given by Eva Carmichael, a survivor of the ship Loch Ard which was wrecked near Port Campbell in 1878, to Jane Shields, the young woman who supported her while she was recovering from her ordeal at Glenample homestead at Princetown. The two women remained friends after Eva Carmichael returned to her home in Britain and was married. Jane Shields also married and it was when her daughter visited Eva in England that she was given the tea set to take back home to her mother. Jane died in 1932 and Eva died in 1934 and the tea set was inherited by Jane’s daughters. In 1975 Jane’s daughter, Mrs Ann Fuller, donated a cup, saucer and plate to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. The handle of the cup was mended. These items (cup, saucer and plate) are of high significance as they are closely connected to the wreck of the Loch Ard, and one of the two survivors, Eva Carmichael. Memorabilia connected to Eva Carmichael are precious and rare. These china items (cup, saucer and plate) are coloured royal blue and gold. .1 The cup has a gilt rim on the cup edge and base. There is a small crack on the side of the cup and the handle has been broken and mended. .2 The saucer is glazed on both sides with a small fault in the middle. It has a gilt band on the inner rim. .3 The plate is glazed on both sides with some evidence of scratching on the plate surface. This is a book by Jean McDonald (nee Henderson) telling of her childhood experiences. Born in 1924 Jean McDonald was one of seven children who grew up at Rivery Park, a dairy farm in Grassmere in the 1930s and 40s. She went to school in Cooramook and Warrnambool. This book is of interest as it describes the life of Jean McDonald in Grassmere. It is an important social history of the life and times of a local woman. This is a soft cover book of 189 pages. The front cover has a coloured photograph of three children near a stream and the back cover has an extract from the book and some comments on it. This booklet of poems has been compiled by Thomas Terrington. Born in 1897 Tom Terrington worked at dairying, fencing, carpentering and woodcutting before taking over the Framlingham store when he was in his forties. He was a scholarly person with a wide knowledge of English literature. He was a well-known local poet and a member of the Australian Poetry Lovers’ Society. He wrote extensively on local history and his unpublished ‘History of Framlingham’ is in the State Library. Framlingham is a small settlement 25 kilometres north east of Warrnambool. This booklet is of interest as it contains some of the poems written by Tom Terrington, an important resident of Framlingham in the 20th century. This is a soft cover book of 24 pages. It will be useful for display. This is a rectangular-shaped wooden box which has been reinforced with metal inserts. It has metal hinges and a locking mechanism with a keyhole lined with metal. There is no key. The box is completely covered, except for the base, with inlaid material consisting of small black pieces and triangular-shaped white pieces, possibly bone. This is an earthenware mug made by Ken Sadler in 1997. In 1972 he established the Potters’s Wheel, a pottery business in Liebig Street, Warrnambool and conducted this business for many years. It is presumed that mugs such as this one would be made to order with the requested name added to the side of the mug. This mug is of interest as a memento of the work and business of the Warrnambool potter, Ken Sadler. This is a ceramic mug with a brown and orange glaze. Bushfield is situated on the outskirts of Warrnambool . The local Bushfield recreation reserve has been home to a number of local football and cricket clubs which play in various leagues in the Warrnambool district. Litle could be The Bushfield Cricket club has possibly been combined with another local team It is home to the Woodford Cricket Club which is the closest club to Bushfield and which uses the Bushfield oval as its home ground. It is a member of the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association. We have little information on Stan Sharkey who was obviously associated with the club in the late 1970's.Cricket is an important part of sporting life in Australia and especially in country regions where clubs often form part of the social network of the towns and districts. They rely heavily on the contributions of volunteers such as Stan Sharkey to operate. This is a high-quality item and would have been used in a household in affluent circumstances. The firm of James Dixon and Sons of Sheffield, England, was established in 1806 and ceased to operate in 1992. Candles were widely used for household lighting until the advent and availability of electric lighting from the 1920s onwards. This item has no known local provenance but is retained because it is fine example of a household item of the past.This is an electro-plated silver candlestick holder. The base is roughly circular (more hexagonal) with an embossed edge and a handle attached by welding. The candlestick holder is vase-shaped with a circular open top for inserting the candle. The circular top also has an embossed edge. Attached to the handle by a clip is a cone-shaped snuffer. The candle holder and snuffer have been used. These two items were sent in the 1940s to Tom Terrington of Framlingham ( about 28 kilometres north east of Warrnambool) from Donald Mackintosh. Tom Terrington (b. 1897) worked at various jobs until he took over the Framlingham store in the 1940s. He was a scholarly person with a wide knowledge of English literature. He wrote poetry and researched and wrote extensively on Framlingham history. Donald Mackintosh (1866-1951) was Australia’s first Olympic shooting gold medallist. He competed in trapshooting events all over the world, winning 30 gold medals, making a considerable amount of money and holding the world trapshooting championship title from 1903 to 1908. He was a keen photographer and wrote poetry under the name of ‘The Rambler’. This small folder is of great interest as it contains a poem sent to Tom Terrington by Donald Mackintosh (The Rambler). Tom Terrington is important in Framlingham’s history and his friendship with Donald Mackintosh, an Australian and world trapshooting champion and a poet is of considerable interest. The tone of the poem echoes also the despondency felt by Australians during the darkest days of World War Two. This is a piece of cream thickened paper folded in two with a typed copy of a poem pasted on the inside of the paper and a copy of a prose piece typed in ornate script and pasted on to a piece of cardboard and enclosed in the cream folder. This book belonged to Charity Lamerton Phillips and may have belonged to her parents before her. On the inside front cover are the names of George Phillips and Jessie Kerr, giving their marriage date and the birth dates of four of their children. Charity Lamerton Phillips (1872-1942) was the daughter of George and Jessie Phillips of Nirranda and she married Frederick Bonnett and farmed in the Mepunga district. This book is of interest because of its age and because it contains family information on the Phillips family of Nirranda. Many 19th century people recorded family information in a Bible or other old book kept in the home. This is a hard cover book of 325 pages. The cover is brown leather with some sections eroded away. The spine has gold lettering. The book contains several black and white illustrations. Some of the pages are stained and torn at the edges. There are two loose sheets – an undated newspaper cutting and a notice regarding an anniversary service at the Westdown Congregational Chapel. The inscriptions are handwritten in black ink. There is also pencil scribble on some pages. This small note book belonged to John Ross, the Warrnambool Town Surveyor and Engineer (1889-1906 & 1913-1914). The book lists the levels taken for the benefit of contractors undertaking jobs for the Warrnambool Council from 1898 to 1902. The jobs include ‘Russells Creek from the Merri River upwards’, ‘Outlet at the Flume’, ‘Guns at the Battery’ and Drainage from the Terminus Hotel to the end of the Japan Street Tunnel’. John Ross was also in private practice with the architectural firm of Ross and Jackman. This notebook is of considerable interest because it is an original note book that belonged to John Ross, the Warrnambool Town Surveyor and Engineer in the late 19h century and early 20th century. The note book contains important information on the engineering projects in Warrnambool and district from 1898 to 1902. This note book has a red leather cover. The cover is a little creased. The inside pages have ruled red lines and printed headings regarding the levels taken of a site and the location of the site (1898 to 1902). The engineer’s entries in the printed columns are handwritten , mostly in pencil.
