This book gives information on the place names of South Australia and the origins of the names. It was compiled by Ronald Praite and John Tolley in 1970 and so is somewhat out of date as more place names would have to be added today. European settlement began in South Australia in 1836.This book is of minor interest to those in the Warrnambool area and may be useful for those researchers whose families have some connection to early South Australian history. This is a certificate issued by the Victorian Country Fire Authority to John Sizeland, a member of the Warrnambool Urban Fire Brigade. The date is 13th April 1977 and the certificate marked John (Jack) Sizeland’s retirement from the Warrnambool Fire Brigade after more than 37 years’ service (the certificate is exact – 37 and five-twelfths years). In our collection we have Jack Sizeland’s Fire Brigade uniform and accessories. This certificate is of interest because it documents the years of service of a Warrnambool identity, John Sizeland. This is a 1977 certificate issued by the Country Fire Authority to John Sizeland. It is a white sheet with a blue tinge around the edges. It has the emblem of the Country Fire Authority, the name of the Authority in a cream, yellow and black ornate setting and printing in black and yellow. This booklet gives information on the Cavenett families from 1840 to 1970. John and Eliza Cavenett with four children set sail from England to Adelaide in 1840 but Eliza and one child died on the voyage. John Cavenett married again and settled in Adelaide. Most descendants of John Cavenett that are mentioned in the booklet also lived in South Australia but some settled later in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia. The book has been produced by Kingsley Ireland. This book is of some interest as an example of a family history written by a descendant of the pioneer family. As far as can be ascertained it does not have any local significance. This is soft cover booklet of 41 pages. The cover has a cream-coloured background with sepia-coloured photographs of three Cavenett family members on the front cover and a sepia-coloured reproduction of an S.T. These documents concern a legal case involving the Town Of Warrnambool, Elizabeth Granter and James Harris. The lawyer in the case was William Ardlie. The son of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool, William Ardlie was a prominent lawyer in Warrnambool from the late 1860s to the early 1930s and was active in community affairs. Elizabeth Granter, involved in the financial side of the legal case, was the wife of James Granter, another prominent Warrnambool identity of the 19th century. Granter was a quarryman and a road contractor and he and other members of his family seem to have been involved in other legal battles with James Harris, an employee of the Warrnambool Tramway, also involved in the financial aspects of the legal case. These three documents are of minor interest as an example of the legal cases undertaken by the well-known Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie. These are three 1888/1889 documents related to the legal practice of William Ardlie. Item One is a document listing the details of a court case involving Elizabeth Granter, James Harris and the Town Council of Warrnambool and is a sheet of paper with the details of the case written on both sides of the paper in black ink. The back page has a green stamp to the value of one penny. Item Two is a letter from Charles Hider, the bookseller, in regard to an item received by H.A.C. Macdonald, the Town Clerk of the Town of Warrnambool. The handwriting is in black ink. Item Three is a letter from the Warrnambool Tramway Department to Mr Ardlie regarding the request of James Harris for a small sum of money. This book was written in 2007 by Margaret McOrist to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival in the Warrnambool area of John Logan. It is a sequel to a 1991 book, ‘Clotted Cream and Mangels’ which told the story of John Logan and his wife Mary Gardner. They lived at Hopkins Point, Warrnambool and the book, ‘Beyond the Point’ tells the story of the Logan descendants. When the farm land was sub-divided and sold the nearby beach was named ‘Logans Beach’. This book is of considerable interest as it tells the story of the descendants of important early settlers, John Logan and Mary Gardner. The area where they first settled is now of major interest as Logans Beach (named for the Logan family) is the well-known whale watching area. Southern Right Whales return to this beach each year and the females calve and remain up to three months at this beach, making it an important ‘whale nursery’. This is a soft cover book with black plastic ring binding and clear plastic sheets covering the front and back paper covers. These drawings have been produced by Ron Uebergang at the Warrnambool Technical School in 1919. Uebergang family members were pioneer settlers in the Warrnambool area in the early 1850s. Ronald John Uebergang (1903-1971) was born in Warrnambool to Ernest Uebergang and Mary Watson. Ron Uebergang lived at the family property, Hopkins Hill at Allansford and went to Allansford State School and Warrnambool Technical School. He was mechanically minded, a good photographer and fond of music and dancing. He married Myra Hall and was a dairy farmer at Hopkins Hill and later grazed beef cattle. Warrnambool Technical School was established in 1913, firstly at a Timor Street site and later at Caramut Road (today it is known as Brauer College). These drawing are of considerable interest as works produced by Ron Uebergang. Uebergang family members have been prominent in the Warrnambool-Allansford area since the pioneering days of the district. The drawings also are good examples of the type of work produced by Warrnambool Technical School students in its early years.These are two designs and drawings by Ron Uebergang produced at the Warrnambool Technical School in 1919. In 1858 a tramway was constructed to move goods between Warrnambool township and jetty on Lady Bay which was over a mile away The terminus was established on the southern side of Merri Street. and the track went around the edge of Lake Pertobe reserve. Large stores were also built near where the present railway station is situated to hold produce and carriages. These documents relate to contracts between Marion Gauley ,contractor of Warrnambool and the borough of Warrnambool for the operation of horse work with the tramway. John McDermid sadler,and William Stevens farmer of Russell's Creek are acting as surety for the contract.The tramway was an important part of Warrnambool's infrastructure and history and the documents also include names of local people. This is a map of the Hopkins River Estuary prepared by Dr John Sherwood for the benefit of anglers. The information on the sheet includes the location of sand banks, the water depths, boat ramp facilities and public access facilities. Some of the information has been gathered from aerial photographs. The map has been produced by the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education which was developed in the late 1960s from the tertiary section of the Warrnambool Technical College and with all its departments established by 1984 at the Sherwood Campus five kilometres from Warrnambool on the Princes Highway. Today the site is occupied by Deakin University, Warrnambool campus. The Warrnambool Anglers’ Club has its headquarters on the banks of the Hopkins River near the mouth of the river and the Lyndoch Aged Care facility.This map is of interest as a specialist one, providing fishermen with detailed information on all aspects of the Hopkins river estuary. Fishing has been both a profession and a popular recreational pursuit for Warrnambool residents since the early days of the city’s settlement. The Hopkins River Estuary has been a focal point for fishermen throughout Warrnambool’s history. This is a sheet of paper folded three times to produce a folded map. The front cover has a black and white photograph of two fishermen with a large fish. The map of the Hopkins River Estuary is in yellow, blue and black and covers the side of one sheet and three quarters of the other side. There is an advertisement for the Hopkins River Boathouse with a black and white sketch of the boathouse and notes on the map written by Dr John Sherwood. This book has been written by Walter Murdoch while he was living in Warrnambool in 1903. Walter Logie Forbes Murdoch (1874-1970) had a distinguished academic career and became Australia’s best-known essayist. He was a household name to two generations of Australians through his radio broadcasts and syndicated literary columns in many Australian newspapers. In 1901 Walter Murdoch came to Warrnambool going into partnership with James Scott, the proprietor of Warrnambool College. They bought out Warrnambool Grammar School previously run by John Stanley. When Scott retired Murdoch became the sole owner and headmaster of the school. While in Warrnambool Murdoch wrote the school history textbook ‘The Struggle for Freedom’ which covers British constitutional history and has chapters on Australian government at all levels, including the new Federal Government. In 1904 Murdoch left Warrnambool to take up a lecturing position in English at Melbourne University. He went on to become the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia and later its Chancellor. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him. During his lifetime Murdoch published over 40 works and he was knighted in 1964. This book is of major significance as it was written by the distinguished writer and academic Walter Murdoch whilst he was working in Warrnambool. The address at the end of the book’s Preface is ‘The College, Warrnambool’ and the date is ‘October 7th 1903’. The book sold 10,000 copies in its first year. This copy of the book ‘The Struggle for Freedom’ was owned by a member of the Goodall family, a name prominent in Warrnambool’s history. The stamp of the stationer Walter Davies shows that it was originally bought at a well-known local Warrnambool bookstore.This is a hard cover book of 248 pages. It has a dark red cover with black printed material and a Whitcombe and Tombs logo. The cover is torn near the spine and there is much foxing. The book contains a Preface, Contents pages, an Introductory chapter, 28 other chapters on the development of Government in Britain and the Federation of Australia and an Index. This is the biography of Father John Brosnan (1919-2003) who was well-known as the Catholic Chaplain at Pentridge Prison in Melbourne for 30 years and the person who attended the hanging of Robert Ryan, the last man hanged in Victoria in 1967. Father Brosnan was born in Keilambete and spent his early years in Cudgee, attending Cudgee State School. This book is of interest because it tells the life story of Father John Brosnan who was born in the Western District and spent his early years at Cudgee, 15 kilometres from Warrnambool. Father Brosnan achieved fame as the Catholic Chaplain at Pentridge Prison and as the priest who campaigned to save Ronald Ryan from hanging and who was with Ryan when he was hanged. This is a soft cover book of 170 pages. The cover has an image of Father Brosnan in sepia tones set against a background of the front of Pentridge Prison in dark blue tonings. These two important books are part of a series produced in the 1880s but they have widely-different content. One describes the natural history of the Parish of Selborne in the County of Hampshire in England. It was written by the British naturalist and ornithologist, Gilbert White and first published in 1789. Since that time it has been republished over 300 times right up to the present day. It is notable for its charm and simplicity and for its description of a pre-industrial England. The other is by the American author, Walt Whitman, first published in 1871. It is a major work of comparative politics and expounds on the influence of the Louisiana Purchase and the expansion of the American spirit and character. It also denounces the post-Civil War materialism that had spread at that time in America. These books are of interest because of their antiquarian nature but they are mostly of local Warrnambool interest because of their inscriptions. The books belonged to William Hugh McMahon (1862-1936). William McMahon commenced a legal practice in Warrnambool in 1894, firstly in Liebig Street and later in Kepler Street. He was a prominent lawyer in Warrnambool for 30 years and a staunch adherent of the Presbyterian Church. He and his family lived at ‘Glenrye’ at the corner of Ardlie Street and Botanic Road, a site where the St. John of God Hospital was later established. These two accompanying volumes are in the Camelot Series (1887 and 1888). They are hard cover books with red covers and two ornamental patterns on the front cover (stylized urn and fan shapes). The urn pattern is repeated on the spines. ‘The Natural History of Selborne’ has 366 pages (a Preface and Chapters on the Natural History of Selborne, a Naturalist’s Calendar and Observations on Various Branches of Natural History) and ‘Democratic Vistas’ has 175 pages (a Preface and 12 Chapters). The latter has the remains of a label stuck to the front cover. This book, written by John Hooker, contains the story of Captain Cook based on the screenplay by Peter Yeldham for the A.B.C. television production of the life of Captain James Cook. The voyages of Captain Cook are of prime importance in Australia’s history as his discoveries and positive reports of the east coast of Australia led eventually to Britain’s decision to establish a penal colony in New South Wales.This book is of significance because it was written by John Hooker, important in Warrnambool’s late 20th century history as a regular feature writer and columnist for the Warrnambool Standard newspaper. His articles, which raised moral, social and political issues from a local point of view, were widely read and admired by the residents of Warrnambool and district. Born in New Zealand, John Hooker came to Australia in 1963 and resided for a time at Killarney near Port Fairy. He was a publisher and later a full-time writer, publishing both newspaper articles and novels. This is a soft cover book of 258 pages. This is a book given to Margaret Davidson in 1875 by her aunt, Mrs J. Davidson. Margaret Milne Davidson (1839-1928) was the eldest child of James and Isabella Davidson and she was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland. She came to the Warrnambool area in 1850. The property, ‘Woodend’, was near Cassadys Bridge (Caramut Road today). The aunt, Mrs J. Davidson would be the wife of John Davidson, the brother of James and a farmer at ‘Rosebank’, Woodford. The portraits of John and James Davidson are on the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board. This book is of interest because of its inscription. The book is connected to the Davidson families, prominent in Warrnambool’s pioneer history.This is a hard cover book of 832 pages. This book, edited by Donald MacLeod, was given in 1883 as a prize to Annie Egerton by the Rev. W.H. Scott for Bible Knowledge. Annie Egerton was a pupil at the Allansford State School. John Jones was the Head Master at this school from 1867 to 1891. The school was opened in December 1856 as a National School and is still operating. No other details concerning Annie Egerton have been found.This book is of importance as it is a 19th century book given as a prize to a pupil of the Allansford School in 1883 for her Bible knowledge. It is particularly interesting that a prize for religious knowledge was given in the 1880s to a pupil at a secular State School. It is also interesting to note the type of book given to a primary school girl in the 19th century – a book with strong moral overtones and some heavy instructional articles. This is a hard cover book of 836 pages. It has a dark green and black cover patterned with an ornamental pattern and gold lettering contained within a square box on both the cover and the spine. The inside front and back pages have a mottled green flower pattern. The edges of the pages have a gilt finish. The book has a bookplate on the inside cover and the book contains an Index of Contents, short stories, articles on various topics and an Index of Authors. There are many black and white illustrations and sketches throughout the text. The first illustration has a piece of tissue paper in front of it. This book was given in 1886 as a prize to Annie Egerton from Allansford State School. The prize was for recitation. Allansford State School No. 3 was opened in 1856 as a National School and is still operating. Allansford is about ten kilometres from the Warrnambool city area and most of it today is within the boundaries of the City of Warrnambool. John Jones was the Head Master of the school from 1867 to 1891. No details have been found on Annie Egerton or her family This book is of interest because it concerns 19th century Allansford State School, Head Master John Jones and pupil Annie Egerton. It is also a book of antiquarian interest. This is a hard cover book of 436 pages. It has a green cover with gold and black ornamentation and black and green lettering. This is a book, ‘Divine Conduct or the Mystery of Providence’ originally written by the Rev. John Flavel in 1677. This is a later edition with no date listed but it is presumed it was re-published in the 19th century. The book was given to Janet McGhie in 1849, the first anniversary of the Warrnambool Sunday School, just 14 months after the first European settlers arrived in the new settlement of Warrnambool. The first Sunday School in Warrnambool was located in McDowell’s Store and run by Thomas Denney and Richard Osburne. The latter in 1851 commenced Warrnambool’s first newspaper, the Warrnambol Examiner and in 1887 published an important history of Warrnambool. Janet Garden McGhie was the daughter of Matthew and Isabella McGhie who were pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. Janet McGhie married Alfred Coulstock at the age of 17 and died in Warrnambool in 1918 at the age of 80. She was aged 11 when she received this book and one wonders what she made of the ponderous text. This book is very precious as one of the few mementos we have of the very early days of Warrnambool’s settlement. It gives us a date for the establishment of the first Sunday School and the name of one of the award winners. It is also an interesting example of the pious and ponderous writings that young children were expected to read in the mid 19th century. It is presumed that at that time there would not have been a great choice of reading material available in Warrnambool to give to childrenThis is a hard cover book of 252 pages. This is a boy’s adventure book owned by Francis Skuse of Strathallan, Allansford in 1906. Francis Skuse, the son of John and Catherine Skuse, was a grazier at the property Strathallan, six kilometres from Allansford. His property included the Strathallan mine which had limestone/carbonates deposits. He died in 1962. This book is of interest because it was owned by Francis Skuse, a farmer and long-time resident of Strathallan, near Allansford.This is a hard cover book of 558 pages. This book has been written by Walter Murdoch and it is the publication of two lectures given by Murdoch in 1937 (the John Murtagh Macrossan Memorial Lectures). John Murtagh Macrossan (1833-1891) was a Queensland politician who for some time held the seat of Townsville in the Queensland Parliament. He was born in Ireland and came to Australia in 1853, spending some time in the mining regions of Queensland. With Samuel Griffith he attended the first National Convention on Federation in 1891. Walter Murdoch (1874-1970) had a distinguished academic career and became Australia’s best-known essayist. He was a household name to two generations of Australians through his radio broadcasts and syndicated literary columns in several Australian newspapers. In 1901 Walter Murdoch came to Warrnambool and went into partnership with James Scott as proprietors of a private school, Warrnambool College. They bought out Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar School and when Scott retired Murdoch became the sole proprietor and Head Master of Warrnambool College. While in Warrnambool in 1903 Murdoch wrote a school history book called ‘The Struggle for Freedom’, a book which sold 10,000 copies in its first year. Murdoch later became an English lecturer at Melbourne University and then the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him. He published over 40 books and he was knighted in 1964. This book is of interest as it was written by Walter Murdoch. He not only has a national reputation as an academic and writer but also he spent some time in Warrnambool and played his part in our history. This is a soft cover book of 66 pages. The cover was originally blue but is much faded, especially on the spine. The print on the cover and spine is dark blue and there is an ornamental edging on the front cover. The back of the cover has an advertisement for other Walter Murdoch books. Shows detail of Artillery Planning in the area of Peronne & Mont St Quentin. Inscribed "Map to accompany H.A. Scheme for Mobile Warfare". Marked with 'Lanes' and Corps/Division Boundaries.The donor, Staff Sergeant R.O. (Bob) Snape, Reg No 8651, enlisted as a Stretcher Bearer in 1915 but, because of his secretarial skills was employed in HQ positions as soon as he arrived in France and as a stenographer who worked as Confidential Clerk to General Sir John Monash from June to December 1918; and subsequently, for General Sir Talbot Hobbs until June 1919. The map was very likely directly used in the planning of the 1918 battles such as Mont St Quentin.Original Item recovered from possibly Australian Corps HQ, probably between the Armistice, 11 November 1918, and June 1919, when Staff Sergeant R.O.(Bob) Snape was repatriated. This postcard is a photograph of a section of a large tapestry , 1.8m x 1.9m, which hangs in the foyer of the South West Health Care. This tapestry was funded by the Geoff and Helen Handbury Foundation. It was woven at the Australian Tapestry Workshop, South Melbourne. The postcard “Concerning the Wading Birds of Warrnambool Wetlands” brings to a wider audience, the work of John Wolesley as well as the craftsmanship of the weavers in presenting his original watercolor in a different medium. The tapestry itself was commissioned by Warrnambool Base Hospital.Background is in muted shades of blue and browns with larger birds in foreground and smaller ones in the background. The texture of the tapestry is clearly visible. In a time when travel to distant parts of the world were difficult. Magazines such as these, offered people the opportunity to see the sights of the World. The link to Warrnambool, with this publication is the R.A. Philp stamp on the front cover. R. A. The building at 94 Merri St is amongst the earliest buildings in Warrnambool. It was possibly constructed before 1854 and maybe as early as 1848. The original building consisted of four main rooms under a hip roof. The outer walls were masonry , apparently rubble The Heritage Council indcate that on the balance of probabilities this was the general store of Richard Osbourne and John Moffat Chisholm built in 1847-48.The building at 94 Merri Street had historical and architectural significance to the state of Victoria. It was a rare example of surviving, pre separation building with associated interest in its materials and components It is associated with Richard Osbourne who founded the Warrnambool Examiner(1851_1889) and the town’s first historian. Architecturally, the significance of the house lay in the hand -wrought timber framing. All the major timbers in this building had been hand sawn. The Gold rush of the 1850’s saw this process mechanised. A kitchen fireplace in the rear skillion included a large block of Merri Creek Mudstone, a combination of “tufa” and clay that was used in the Warrnambool District as an excellent substitute for fire bricks. The house was demolished in 2011 and items of significance were salvaged, this brick being one. While some bricks were imported, there is evidence that there were a number of brick burning businesses in operation around this time. However it is difficult to ascertain to which group this brick belongs. Red clay rectangular brick.
