The RDNS Sisters are wearing the uniform of the day which was a short sleeve white blouse under a royal blue V neck tunic style frock with the RDNS insignia on the left upper area. Sister Pelosi is being transferred by another RDNS staff member from a bed via a hoist into a wheelchair as a demonstration during an Education session.From the founding of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), in 1885, known as the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) from 1966, equipment was loaned and demonstrated to patients, and their family members, to enable them to care for the person in their home. In the 1970s RDNS employed a Physiotherapist who taught RDNS staff correct transferring techniques, including the use of a hoist when this became available. RDNS staff taught and used these techniques in patient’s homes to undertake safe transfer of the patient and to reduce physical strain on RDNS nursing staff and family members.Black and white photograph of a Sister of the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), demonstrating the transferring of Sister Helen Pelosi into a wheelchair using a Hydraulic Hoist. Bivouac Hut was built in 1935 on the Northern end of Mt. Bogong, on the Staircase Spur, about halfway to the summit. It was funded by Cleve Cole and he arranged for Walter Maddison to build it. Cleve Cole dedicated his life to the mountains and wanted to make them safer to visit - more huts and improved maps, pole lines and tracks. He perished in the winter of 1936 after attempting to make the first winter crossing from Mt. Hotham to Mt. Bogong on skis. The two others with him, Howard Michell and Mick Hull survived. The weather conditions were extreme at the time and having made the summit of Mt. Bogong they then became disorientated in the blizzard and came down the southern end of Bogong instead of the northern end . Howard Michell made it out to Glen Valley, a small mining town, to get help. Mick and Cleve were carried out on rough bush stretchers and Cleve died a few hours later. The Summit Hut was funded by Howard Michell and built in the 1940's. It was deliberately burnt down in the early 1980's. Bivouac hut was rebuilt in the 1980's.These photographs are of historical significance. Both huts were funded by experienced bushwalkers to provide shelter from the weather and so make walking and skiing in the area safer. They are both now gone with Bivouac being replaced with a more modern structure but there is nothing left of the Summit Hut. 5 coloured photographs, A4 in size, 4 near the summit of Mt. This snagging team is on the Brodribb River, east of Orbost. The Brodribb bridge can be seen in the background of the Photograph. The Snowy River was used for commercial navigation after 1880 and extensive de-snagging A shipping company was formed in 1880, poling barges upstream until the removal of large trees and branches that had fallen into the river was carried out to make the river upstream of Marlo easier to navigate. "The snaggers played an important part in making the river free for transport. By 1880 Captain Collins, R McNair engineer, J McNair and the two Winchesters were at work with a punt on the Snowy and Brodribb. Mr. Jim Winchester took charge soon after. Early snaggers were Johnston, J Renton, Nat Lynch, John Drew, Hatton, J Scott and Harry Wilkinson. The system used was to use a tree on the river bank as a lever and with heavy manila ropes, slowly to haul the snags out. They were piled up around a tree and burned when dry. The snaggers lived in a row of cottages in Snaggers’ Lane." (info. Bob Hymans Collection Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. September 1922. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This letter is significant because it documents a changed approach to the management of visitors and transport at Falls Creek.A letter to Licensees at Falls Creek explaining the reason for the introduction of parking fees in some sections of the Falls Creek Tourist Area in the winter of 1960. The system included limited access to free passes amd season tickets. Season tickets could be obtained at a cost of £1/10/-. This photo was processed at the same time as image EDHS_07261 of roadworks in Sackville Street about 200 m away which has been dated as c.1983 (between Sep 1982 and May 1983). The paling fence on the left has a change of angle just before the crest of the hill then flattens. More recent Google Streetviews show the same fence and shape and in more recent times a new fence but same shape. Google Streetview for Jan 2008 indicates a more recent road widening and new profile kerb and channel. The embankment was further cut away and the footpath that was adjacent to the fence lowered to road level. The fire hydrant that was on the right hand side has been relocated to the left next to the footpath. Significantly more electrical wires are now strung on the telephone poles. In 2017 Bolton Street was again upgraded. Black and white photograph of W6 994 in Smith St. Collingwood/Fitzroy, in bound on route 90 to City - Spencer St., picking up passengers at a tram stop. Pole obscuring front of tram. Tram has destination "City Spencer St" and run number "P44" Tram appears to be fairly crowded already. Photo taken c1956 with a number of motor cars in the street including some Holdens. In the background are a number of shop fronts, with signs for "Singer Sewing Machines", "Freddo frogs", "Peters Ice Cream", Davies Hardware, John Cornish. On the side of the photograph is the first part of a Woolworths store front. The address of the John Cornish, Mercer, was 205 Smith St. Fitzroy and Woolworths were at 182 -184 Smith St. Collingwood. Negative No. N377 and black and white print made by a laser printer (stored in folder) of Ballarat No. 17 at the City Terminus, Sturt St. Tram has destination of "Victoria St." and a White Horse whiskey dash panel advertisement. Has the short tram stop/section pole adjacent to the tram. In the background has the SEC offices, "The Baby Shop", also Crockers and Tunbridge's stores. Note a Conductor can be seen walking across from the SEC offices to the tram. Date of photo on folder - 11/6/1960. Black and white photograph of tramcar 76 at Batman Avenue terminus in 1925. The tram is a single-truck California combination tram, one of 20 built for the P&MTT in 1915. The photo was taken at Batman Avenue in 1925 and shows a driver or conductor adjusting the trolley pole. The photo shows the Batman Ave terminus and Flinders St station in the background. Tram 76 was built in 1915 by the Meadow Manufacturing Co in Sydney for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust before transferring to the MMTB in 1920. The J-class tram was bought by the SECV in 1931 and moved to Ballarat as tram No. 19. It operated in Ballarat until it was transferred to Bendigo in 1960 as tram No. 7, operating as public transport until 1972. It is now in operating condition at the Tramway Museum Society of Victoria in Bendigo.
