It started in the early years of Legacy with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built in the 1930s and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. A church service for Legacy widows at Scot's Church in Collins St, Melbourne. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The church used for the service varies, The Scots' Church was the first Presbyterian Church to be built in Victoria. The photos shows the interior of the church with the congregation listening to service. Same roll of film as the photos with President David Ford in 2003 so the event is assumed to be in that year. Letter sent to Legatee R.J.A. Foskett by Miss Enez Domec-Carre informing him that she would be discontinuing the use of Legacy House for her private physical culture classes. Details in the letter explain that she had resigned from running Legacy Girls' Classes on 31st December 1970. Legacy continued to allow her to hold private classes in Legacy house for young business girls of the city on Monday afternoons. In this letter she mentions her health means she was stopping those classes and thanked Legacy for their generosity. She still offered assistance with costumes for the annual demonstration and could be called on if any need arose. Enez was the supervisor of the girls classes held at Legacy House for many years. She organised many annual demonstrations and was held in high regard by Legacy. The library at Legacy House is named in her honour. She was a former Miss Victoria and was known for her physical education skills and for introducing grace and culture to Melbourne. In 1932 she joined Melbourne Legacy as assistant to Mrs Gilles (wife of a Legatee) later became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65. In the post World War II baby boom the Legacy evening classes were attended by about 400 girls. She helped organise Legacy Widows and Legatee wives to sew the costumes for performances. Among her proudest moments was a display by 1000 Junior Legatees at the MCG during the 1954 visit of Queen Elizabeth II. Legacy would sometimes host reunions for the children that had been cared for by Legacy over the years. These four pages list the Office Bearers and Committees of Melbourne Legacy in 1942. This is a record of Legatees involved in the first 20 years of Legacy. Some very notable names that were key in establishing Legacy, including Sir Stan Savige. It was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1940-50s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1940-50s. Legatee Cyril Smith and others were detailing their experiences and knowledge for the future. This is a record of Legatees involved in the first 20 years of Legacy. A letter dated 14 March 1940 to Legatee Stan Savige advising him that he had permission to visit Hobart Legacy while he was in Australia during the second World War. It is signed by General Thomas Blamey. The reason for the trip to Hobart was to present the Legacy Charter to the Remembrance Club to become Hobart Legacy. It was held at Hadley's Hotel in Hobart. Savige was serving in the Second World War and had to obtain special permission to travel to Hobart to fulfil this task. A menu card from the dinner is also in the archive. Legatee Savige presented the Legacy Charter which was then accepted by the President of the Remembrance Club. A 2 page double spread feature in the Herald Sun on 29th August 2000 to promote Legacy prior to Legacy Week. The photo of widows Jo Stanley and Muriel Love is accompanied by the article 'Picking up the pieces'. They were helped by Legacy when their husbands passed away. Muriel nursed her husband and after his death found a void, Legacy was a 'lifesaver'. Jo joined the younger widows club where each of them still have children on their hands so they have more in common and meet every second month. In 1991 a relay of school children ran to the Shrine to coincide with the annual pilgrimage in 1991. A photo shows President John Sullivan holding the Legacy Torch with a group of children in yellow Legacy T shirts at the Eternal Flame at the Shrine of Remembrance on 1 September 1991. Also photos of the widows processing into the Shrine, some with wreaths to lay. From an article in Melbourne Legacy Widows' Newsletter in September 1991 it is a photo of a special torch relay. To coincide with the Annual Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Remembrance over 50 runners covered a 25 kilometre distance from War Grave Memorial in Springvale to the Shrine. President John Sullivan accepted the Legacy torch from the young runners before leading the Legacy family into the Shrine. A photocopy of 7 pages of Chapter 13 from Legatee Donovan Joynt's biography 'Breaking the road for the rest'. Legatee Donovan had received a VC in World War 1. Chapter 13 deals with Legatee Joynt's involvement with Legacy. It covers some of the early years of Legacy's history as he was present at the first luncheon. He mentions it was Mr PW Powell (Pip) that proposed the name Legacy - other accounts attribute the idea to Frank Selleck. It seems Legatee Powell suggested the idea but it was Legatee Selleck that proposed the formal motion and was documented in the minutes. Joynt mentions: "The speaker emphasised that the name Legacy was chosen because it the members of the new organisation had accepted as a legacy the responsibility of seeing that the ideals which their comrades had died fighting for were maintained in Australia." A fact sheet on Ron Barassi compiled by the MCC Library for the State Memorial Service held on 10 November. It lists Ron Barassi's football career. Australian football legend, former ‘Legacy Boy’ and Ambassador, Ronald Dale Barassi, AM passed away at the age of 87 on 6 September.  Ron was forever grateful for Legacy’s support to him and his mother Elza. Throughout his life, as a Legacy Ambassador, Ron generously used his well-respected status and networks to promote the important work of Legacy.   Ron came into Legacy’s care as a child when his father Ronald James Barassi was killed in action at Tobruk in 1941. Ron’s father was the first VFL footballer killed in World War II. Only 5 years old at the time, Ron later rose to be a star footballer for the Melbourne Football club like his father. Legacy assisted with his education and health expenses and supported him in attending youth camps and other recreational activities.   A State Memorial Service for Ron was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on November 10. Staff from Legacy assisted at the service by handing out programmes and encouraging attendees to sign condolence books which have since been presented to the Barassi family.  Legacy was honoured by the Barassi family’s request, in lieu of flowers, that members of the public make a donation to Legacy to assist families of veterans in need, a cause very dear to Ron’s heart. Two professional photographs of the "Widow and Children" statue. The statue was commissioned by Legacy and unveiled in 1998 and symbolises the work of Legacy caring for the widows and children of veterans. Sculptured by Louis Laumen for the Legacy Garden of Appreciation, Birdwood Avenue on the Shrine Reserve. The Legacy Garden of Appreciation is in a cruciform shape and features red poppies which flower around Remembrance Day (11 November). The sculpture was dedicated on 29th September 1998 (part of this taken from the Shrine of Remembrance website). Four gentlemen at a afternoon tea event, presumably two are visiting Melbourne. Two have Legacy name tags, one says "Frank Meldrum, Melbourne". Other names and date unknown. It is possible it was the Legacy Conference held in Melbourne in 1973 which was the Golden Jubilee year, celebrating 50 years of Legacy. The general aim of the Australia-wide conferences was an exchange of ideas and methods of carrying out Legacy functions, and to form general policy for cooperation between clubs and groups.
