Coat worn by Sister Danson (VFX151507) during the British presence in Japan following the end of the Second World War. About 16,000 Australians served in the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces, including 130 from the Australian General Hospital with whom Sister Danson presumably served. Sister Danson was born in Numurkah and served as Leiutentant with the Heidelberg Military Hospital before embarking for Japan in 1947.This coat is part of a complete uniform set held by the Shepparton RSL. The uniform has representative and historic significance as an example of the style of uniform worn by nursing staff of the Australian General Hospital during the 1940s and into the 1950s. The uniform set has social significance to the Shepparton area, being owned and worn by a serving community member who was born in Numurkah, enlisted in Shepparton and returned to the community in later life.Shin length grey woollen double breasted coat fastened with three buttons on front centre. Interior bakelite or plastic button fastens panels on interior. Two hip-height pockets with folded flap on exterior. Grey fabric belt fastened with a metal buckle; belt is held in place with two fabric loops on either side of the waist. The embroideries were machine chained onto colourful cotton sateen (often mistakenly thought to be silk) and usually bear the words 'Souvenir of Egypt' and a year date. Most have a distinctly Egyptian flavour and show the pyramids, camels or date palms. Others show images associated with different armies (such as the Australian Rising Sun Badge, New Zealand General Service Badge or British unit badges) or nations (such as the Australian coat of arms). However, during WW2 they were usually embroidered on black velveteen and the variety of images was not as great as had been available during the First World War. These types of souvenirs were very popular with Australian troops; they were easy to send home and were colourful. This is the emblem of EMU (Experimental Miltary Unit) who were officially known as Royal Australian Navy Helicopter Flight Vietnam (RANHFV). The unit was formed in 1967 and integrated into the US ARmy 135th Assauly Helicopter Company until 1971. The February 1969 RANHFV Report of Proceedings contained the first reference to the unique unofficial badges worn by the men of the 135th AHC. It stated: "In an endeavour to boost the morale and unity of the Company, the Commanding Officer offered $25 and a 3-day pass to Vungtau for the designer of a new Company Crest and NAMAE Hughes’ entry won the competition. It is a very impressive combination of an anchor and US Army wings in a laurel wreath with USA-RAN inscribed in a scroll above the motto; GET THE B... JOB DONE written below". A further reference was made to the badge in the 16 May 1969 Royal Australian Navy "Navy News", which ran a story on the emergence of this unique badge that has become synonymous with the unit and remains so to this day. This badge appears to have been produced late in 1918 when the Liberty League in Victoria was most active. Full details on the Liberty League have not been found but it seems the league was founded in response to the perceived restrictions on personal liberty and rights imposed in Australia as a result of Government policies and laws during World War One. By November 1918 the Liberty League had 80,000 members and there were many campaigners touring Victoria to recruit more members. It is not known how long the Liberty League existed in Australia. This badge has been produced and sold to raise funds to assist Australian soldiers returning from active service in World War One. At the end of the war the Wannon and Corangamite Territorial Repatriation Scheme was set up to assist returning soldiers to adapt to civilian life. It is presumed that similar schemes were established in other electorates in Australia. Wannon is the name of a Federal electorate in the south west of Victoria and includes Warrnambool and the name on the badge may be an abbreviation of the fuller name mentioned above or an offshoot of the above organization. The scheme included assistance to soldiers with loans to set up businesses and build homes. This badge is retained as an example of a local effort to assist Australian soldiers returning from active service in World War One. This badge belonged to a member of the Peters Pals Club, a group established by the Peters Ice Cream business in 1947 and centred around radio stations in Victoria, in this case, 3YB in Warrnambool. Peters Ice Cream was established in Sydney in 1907 by an American Fred Peters. By 1927 the factory and business had its headquarters in Melbourne and continues there today. The Peters Pals club was associated with a radio program by the same name, a variety show that featured quizzes, talent quests, interviews etc. The Peters Pals club was very popular and had over 250,000 members in the 1950s. The radio show was replaced by another Peters Ice Cream- sponsored show on television in the late 1950s and this show ran for several years. This badge is of interest as it has been issued by a local Warrnambool radio station and is a memento of a popular club in Victoria that existed for about ten years over 70 years ago.
