Collector says: "This pair of Physician blankets was found at the Mission op shop in Blackburn South. I remember having such a lovely chat with the solo staff member there as we shared some blanket appreciation, a regular occurence when rehoming a relinquished blanket."Collector's note: "For more than 100 years blankets were made all over Australia in over 100 woollen mills. My aim, is to preserve 100 examples of these wonderful pieces of history. Ten years ago I started collecting the iconic Onkaparinga travel rugs, so that on movie nights at home there would be plenty to go around. Everyone had their favourite; even the cat had his own – a small red tartan one. Keeping an eye out for those travel rugs at op-shops and markets, collectable stores and bazaars, led to noticing vintage blankets. I'd never really thought about them before or paid much attention though of course I had grown up with them at my grandmother's. When I discovered my first Laconia cream blanket with blue stripes, my eyes just went gaga. Well that was it, I was hooked and since then over 500 blankets have passed through my hands. These common, everyday items, found in all households for so many decades, were traditional engagement gifts. Pairs were prized wedding presents turning into family heirlooms. They were fashionable dressers of beds, givers of warmth, bestowers of security and reliability. The comfort found in these objects resonates with almost all of us; we grew up with them ourselves or fondly recall them in a grandparent’s home. There is no modern replacement with the integrity of these old blankets, many of them now older than most of us. They are romantic, sensible, special, familiar, nostalgic and nothing else feels so appropriate in so many situations. No offense to the great Aussie doona, but from hippie to hipster, at a music festival, picnic, campsite or couch, a vintage blanket is something coveted by all. This industry that employed tens of thousands and must have been such a huge contributor to the economy is almost completely lost now. Blanket Fever is an ode to everything that came before: the land, the sheep, the shearers, the hands, the mills, the weavers, the designers, the distributors, the department stores. To the grandparents that gave them, the people that received them, the families that kept them; thank you. I’m passionate about my collection of Australian blankets manufactured in mostly Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania from the 1930s to the end of the 1960s. On 20 August, 2000, five groups of seven students from Bialik College attended the Tournament of the Minds. There are no location or name details attached to this item. Notes in the Meg Ryderman Collection Box 6 Folder 1/1 May 2000 to Sept 2000 provides details. The Tournament was held at Swinburne University in the categories of Language/Literature, Maths/Engineering and Social Science. Five weeks of preparation and hard work preceded the event, during which the students gained skills in the areas of cooperation, creativity and perseverance. Each team was led by a facilitator from the teaching staff and put in many hours guiding and encouraging the students. Bialik can be very proud of the way each team conducted itself on judging day and of the high standard achieved. Please contact [email protected] if you have details to provide. A detailed list of duties broken into 4 parts; dealing with the occupants, the maintenance of the interior of the property, the maintenance of the exterior of the property and the catering and ordering of supplies. Also shows the conditions of employment, the salary was £5 a week with board included. The annual leave was 2 weeks a year. It was anticipated that a couple would manage the property so it outlines the days off per week could be taken together if proper supervision was arranged. The first manager was Mr Bert Frank and his wife was appointed Matron. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. It outlines his war service in WWI (with the 1st and 2nd A.I.F), civilian career running a Ford garage for 20 years and his interests. Also the education and experience of his wife, Clare Frank, and mentions their 10 year old son. It provides referees for both of them. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. 00356.1 Letter dated 12 March 1943 from Cyril Smith to Doug N. Craig of the Holmbush Committee about Miss Helen Giovesi as a possible cleaner for the Legacy Club Hostel. Although it is on Commonwealth of Australia Repatriation Committee letterhead he has noted "Unofficial" and struck out his official title from the letter. 00356.2 Letter dated 14 April 1943 from Holmbush Committee to Miss Helen Giovesi confirming an arrangement for her and her sister Miss Rita to undertake the cooking and household duties at wages of £3 and £2.5 respectively. Report examines cross linking of trams routes and many other recommendations regarding services, union awards, ticketing, opportunities for expansion, reliability, revenue impacts, driver only trams, workplace reform, staffing, revenue protection and tourism opportunities. Note the report has been mis-bound with pages out of order eg 2, 1, 4, 3, 6, 5 etc. Gives a series of recommendations, few of which were implemented in reality. 1302.2 - A4 size - approx. 200 page document with blue covers - appendix to the above report. Book titled "Tramway Permanent Way" presenting a series of lectures by MMTB Per Way officers in 1928 at Hawthorn Depot. Contents in order: 1. Handwritten note from Chris Jacobson on Metropolitan Transit Authority of Victoria memo paper forwarding a copy to Warren Doubleday of the BTPS in Feb. 1988, with date received stamp at depot of 19/2/1988. 2. Photocopy of a memo on Metropolitan Transit letterhead from K. C. Painter dated 20/7/1987 to the Civil Engineering Design drafting staff forwarding a copy of the 1928 lectures to the then current staff. 3. Photocopy of a circular from J.P. Strickland, Chief Engineer to track inspectors, sub overseers, overseers and senior gangers advising that a series of weekly lectures on track work would be held at Hawthorn Depot commencing 23/1/1928. 4. The Pass or ticket could be issued to a SEC staff member to enable travel on the tramways while on business. Style remained very similar to the end of the tramways.Six blocks of SEC Provincial Tramways "Staff Ticket" and four individual tickets. Individual tickets printed on heavy dark grey (Grey 200 gsm card) with black printing. Ticket blocks consist of 50 printed tickets, with stubs, stapled with red cardboard covers. Ticket good for single trip only, of use by employees when travelling on Commission's business. Form No. TYE-2-19. Not known when printed, possibly 1960's maybe earlier. 2101.1 - Aa 002580 - 2599.
