Albert E. Williams first studied art under Fred Foster after being awarded a scholarship to the Ballarat East Art School. In 1913 he became one of the first intake of 83 students to study the Merit Certificate at the newly opened Ballarat Junior Technical School. Williams was the second person to receive a certificate from that institution. He then studied under H.H. Smith for the Art Teachers’ Certificate at the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School between 1915 and 1920. Williams joined the staff of the Ballarat Junior Technical School in 1921, teaching sign writing, ticket writing and house decoration. He taught in other technical schools between 1923 and 1928, returning to Ballarat in that year to fill a vacancy left by John Rowell . Williams continued his teaching career at both the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School and the Junior Technical School until 1942. He taught in various other technical schools from 1943, retiring as Headmaster of the Brighton Technical School in 1964. Albert E. Williams continued producing artwork throughout his career, and was responsible for the education of generations of artists and art teachers. Julie MULLEN This work was completed during Julie Mullen's 3rd year studying Ceramics at Ballarat University College (now Federation University). The work was awarded the 1992 Selkirk Prize. Nornie GUDE (1915-2002) Eleanor Constance (Nornie) Gude was the daughter of Walter Gude, a leading musician, and highly regarded teacher. She grew up in Ballarat and was educated at Loreto College. From 1931 to 1936 Nornie Gude attended the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. She was accepted into the School at the age of 15 because she was so advanced in painting. Nornie Gude studied at Ballarat for five years before progressing to Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria School. In 1936 Nornie Gude was studying at the Ballarat Technical Art School, and the National Gallery Drawing School in Melbourne. She won many art competitions, including first prize at the 1936 Melbourne Royal Agricultural Show for still life drawing, and in 1941 became the first woman to win the National Gallery Students Travelling Scholarship. In the 1936 Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report it was stated: "It is my pleasure to report a most successful year in the Technical Art School. I the Annual Poster Competition for Technical Schools, organised by Wiltshires Pty Limited, 16 prized valued at 33 pounds 8 shillings - out of 23 prizes valued at 56 pounds - were won by our students. As an artist Nornie Gude held no theories and was once heard to say, “You spend your first 20 years learning technique and the next 20 years losing it”. Albino PAGANETTI (1915-1974) Born Victoria. This work won Albino Elvezio (Albert) Paganetti won third place in the Department of Agriculture’s poster competition for their official journal in 1937. The previous year, he took home several prizes at the Wiltshire Poster Contest, including first for ‘Bryant and May’; first for ‘Healing’s Batteries’, and second for the Royal Melbourne Show. A MacRobertson prize-winner, when Paganetti, completed his commercial art course at the Ballarat Technical Art School, he accepted a design position at Morshead and Co., Ballarat. Albert’s farming family lived at Italian Hill, near Daylesford, where his father was a vigneron. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Unframed pencil drawing of a plaster cast of a human figure known as the Dancing Faun, a marble sculpture first recorded in 1665, when Albert Rubens listed it as in the collection of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in Florence (probably long owned by the Medici). By 1688 the sculpture was held by the Uffizi in Florence. In September 1800 the sculpture was sent to Palermo along with other treasures to avoid plunder by the French army, but it was returned to the Florence in 1803. By the 18th Century the Dancing Faun gained a reputation as one of the finest ancient sculptures in existence. A faun makes music by simultaneously playing the ‘crotala’ (similar to cymbals) in his hands and the ‘scabellum’ or ‘croupezion’ under his right foot. Debbie LLOYD Debbie Lloyd returned to study in 2005 completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) degree at the University of Ballarat (now Federation University) in 2007, with honours the following year. She returned to the university as Artist in Residence in 2009. During her time at the University Debbie exhibited in many group exhibitions and her work was selected for the National Graduates Show at PICA in Western Australia. Debbie’s first solo exhibition was held at Space22 in Ballarat, towards the end of 2010. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Robert BARRON (1957- ) Born in Harpenden, England. Robert Barron first worked full-time with clay in 1976, the family pottery at Croydon, Victoria. In 1979, he left Australia on a five-year journey to New Zealand, North America, England, Europe, and South Korea to work with skilled potters in woodfiring. During this time, he visited Michael Cardew at Wenford Bridge Pottery, Cornwall, UK., and was engaged as an apprentice at Cornwall Bridge Pottery, Connecticut, USA. Returning to Australia in 1984, he established Gooseneck Pottery at Kardella, Victoria. With the assistance of a Crafts Board grant Robert Barron built a 1000 cubic ft five-chambered Nabori-Gama style woodfired kiln. This kiln one of the largest wood-fired kilns in Australia. The Black and White committee started in 1936 to raise funds for the children supported by the Sydney Industrial Blind Institute (later Royal Blind Society of NSW) through a variety of events. One such major fundraiser was a Ball, initially began as the White Ball then changed to Black and White Ball in 1948. Ball programs were created to provide opportunity for sponsors to advertise their involvement with this prestigious event, as well include information on the time progression of the night, a menu, a list of the current committee (Patron, President, various positions and members) and the Black and White Derby race sheet. First run in 1956, the Derby gave individuals or businesses the opportunity to sponsor a 'horse' in the race, which was ridden by a 'jockey' who rolled up a line to reach the finish post. Framed portrait of Tilly Aston who began the Association for the Advancement of the Blind, a forerunner to the Association for the Blind. It is part of a series of paintings commissioned by the AFB Board to commemorate the work of past presidents of the organisation. Tilly sits with one hand resting against a table, and the other in her lap. She is wearing a black collared dress with a white lace neck ruff held with an opal pin. Two medals (the Jubilee medal and Coronation medal) are pinned to the chest, each consisting of a red and white bowtie with a brass medallion. Tilly Aston was born in Carisbrook, Victoria, in 1873. When she was very young her parents noticed she was having problems with her vision. They took her to a doctor who diagnosed her with no sight in her right eye and the prognosis of loss of vision in the left eye. As a result of this she was totally blind by the age of 7. Despite this her parents endeavoured to give Tilly as many of life’s advantages that their limited means could supply. From an early age she was taught singing, music, poetry, arithmetic, encouraged to read and observe the natural world around her and be independent. At the age of 8 she was sent to the Asylum and School for the Blind (later called the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind). She excelled in a wide range of subjects and matriculated in 1889. With the help of a public fund was able to attend Melbourne University, being the first blind Australian to do so. Unfortunately the lack of Braille text books made it impossible for Tilly to continue her studies and she left in second year. Tilly was determined that other blind people would not have the same negative experience she had had. In 1894 she organised a meeting to form the Victorian Association of Braille Writers with the aim of producing and supplying Braille to blind Victorians. Braille was produced by trained volunteers with ? recruited in the first six month. Other rights and services for blind people remained very limited. In 1895 Tilly organised a meeting, which formed the Association for the Advancement of the Blind (now Vision Australia). The Association was instrumental in obtaining many benefits for blind people including a blind pension, voting rights and transport concessions. It also established the first nursing homes for blind people, at a time when many blind people were homeless and destitute. Tilly went on to be Australia’s first blind teacher. She was also a very talented musician, author of seven books and was very gifted at arts and crafts. She knew Esperanto and corresponded with people all around the world including Helen Keller. Tilly passed away on November 1st 1947. Her legacy continues through the work Vision Australia which provides services for thousands of blind Australians. Saloon chair on the S.S.Casino. Removed for refurbishment to celebrate fifty year anniversary of the ship and the Belfast and Koroit Steam Navigation Company. The ship sank on the 9th July 1932 at Apollo Bay. This chair which had not been reupholstered chair registration 555 was presented to Capt. Thomas Boyd the first Captain of the Casino. The Geelong RVIB Auxiliary was formed on February 13, 1933 by Mr Birtchnell. This collection of papers includes the minute books from 1944 until 1998. It was noted in correspondence that Geelong and surrounds had been the most outstanding financial contributor to RVIB's revenue. Collections from the Geelong community had provided high donations every year. The Geelong Auxiliary posted 301 pounds on their first return in 1934, easily topping any of the other 200 auxiliaries in the state at that time. The Annual Report from July 31, 1995 noted that with regret due to health reasons and the passing of many members The Geelong RVIB Auxiliary had no option but to go into recess. This building is the second of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows rooms the first built in 1862 and opened in that year on the fifteenth anniversary of the foundation of the Lodge in Belfast/Port Fairy. In 1872 a 35foot addition was added to the back and in 1873 the grand porch was added. The hall was destroyed by fire in 1875 and the only item saved was the cedar Dispensation frame of the past Grand Masters made by John Gallin that now resides in the Historical Society Rooms. The Trustees bought another building which occupied the land now occupied by the National Australia Bank on the corner of Sackville and Cox Streets but it was not suitable so they decided to re-instate the building whose ruins in the meantime had been used by Cobb and Co. This new building was designed by Charles Neylon an architect and built by Robert Ireland. The completed building was re-opened in December 1888 with four front rooms, a mezzanine floor and a hall measuring 32' by 26' and capable of holding 200.
