Ceramic, 'Salt Glazed Bowl' by John Edye, c1983
John EDYE (1944- ) John Edye trained in London at Harrow School of Art in the 1970s, and worked with Peter Dick in Yorkshire and Colin Pearson in Aylesford, Kent before returning to Australia to head the Sturt Pottery at Mittagong from 1974 to early 1978. At Sturt, his trainees included Piers Laverty, Wim Boot, Will Castle, Ruth Elder, Colin McNeill, Penelope Carr, Patrick Forman and Malcolm Campbell. Edye introduced them to salt-glazing, a technique at that time not widely used by studio potters. After leaving Sturt, he established the Little Forest Pottery at Yerrinbool in the Southern Highlands of NSW with Penelope Carr, who moved to Hazelbrook to set up her own pottery in 1983. Edye ran his pottery on a production scale for many years, making reduced and salt glazed stoneware and tutoring part time at East Sydney Technical College. Recently he has been working in Egypt as a technical advisor to an aid project, and he was a speaker at the Australian Ceramics Triennale 09. His works are marked with an impressed 'JE' and/or with the three-lobed tree emblem of Little Forest Pottery. Bernard Plohberger was one of the early ski instructors at Falls Creek. He was born in Austria on 14 January 1930. He was a ski instructor before he left Austria in 1955. He spent the winter of 1956 working as a ski instructor and during the summer Bernie worked as a chainman for the SEC Surveyor. He built the Ski School at Falls Creek in 1957 as well as the Frying Pan Inn. In 1960 the Frying Pan Inn was taken over by Bill Bridgford who had helped to finance its construction. Bernie married his wife Trudi in 1958 and their son Gerhard was born at the ski school in 1959, the first child born at Falls Creek. Both Trudi and Bernie worked for Bob Hymans for a period at Grand Coeur Chalet. After leaving Falls Creek, Bernie and Trudi moved to Canberra where Bernie took work on civil engineering projects such as the coal loader in Wollongong, the Vietnam memorial in Canberra, highway work on the Hume and Sugarloaf Dam in Victoria. Bernie Plohberger died on 18 May 2020. This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr. Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. Victoria Porcelain - Victoria is the name of the leading porcelain producing company of Austria. It was founded 1883 by a company called Lazarus and Rosenfeld ltd. In Bohemia, Austria. After 2 years the factory was sold to Franz Schmidt. It was under his ownership that the Vitoria factor became the largest porcelain producing factory of its times. The Victoria Austria round green mark was used between 1904 and 1918.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is also an excellent example of Victoria Austria porcelain of the early 20th century.A porcelain shaving mug with floral design on one side. Album - Haeusler Collection Family Scrapbook Album Belonging to Ilma Haeusler c. 1910s - 1920s
The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This scrapbook album belonged to Ilma Margaret Ernestine Haeusler (née Tasker), born in 1900 in Tallangatta. Ilma died in childbirth in 1928, leaving her husband Louis Alfred Haeusler (b.1878), and one surviving son, John Alfred Lyell (b.1922). The scrapbook was gifted to Ilma from her Aunt and contains Tasker family photographs, and postcards and greeting cards Ilma received in the 1910s-1920s.This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history, social history and women's history.An olive green photographic album with a red, green and yellow floral motif on the front cover. A press release from Melbourne Legacy in 1975 which relates a story of how Legacy works. The information was intended to be used by press and magazines etc. The title 'A high flier' is about 'Bill' a young 13 year old boy who lived with his mother, a widow, and 10 other children in poor surroundings. Legacy was able to organise assistance from War Service Homes to give them a chance of a home of their own. Legacy helped in the usual way, with educational expenses, school uniforms, and other school expenses. Bill achieved his leaving certificate, then matriculated and gained a Commonwealth scholarship. He chose to do Aeronautical Engineering at Melbourne University and Legacy provided a spot for him at Blamey House where he could live close to his studies. He went on to complete his studies at University of Sydney and helped by a research scholarship also the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, then commenced a post-graduate PhD studies in Aerodynamics. He became a Research Lecturer at the Imperial College. Financial record - Ledger, Cash Collection Swinton's store, Early 1920s
This note book comes from the Warrnambool business of Swintons Pty Ltd. It contains the names of the firm’s collectors, (called ‘outside collectors’) and the names of those in the Warrnambool district from whom they had collected cash in 1923, 1924 and 1925. It is presumed that the cash was owing to the Swinton business for goods supplied. The notebook also includes some details on employee sick leave in the 1940s and 50s. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool district, erecting many buildings, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street, Warrnambool selling groceries, china and glassware and hardware. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stored were opened in Cudgee, Wangoom, Nullawarre, West Warrnambool and South Warrnambool. After William Swinton died his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split, with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling seeds, produce and hardware. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This note book is of interest because it gives details of some business dealings of Swintons Pty Ltd in the 1920s. It will be useful to researchers. The current Swinton business in Timor Street is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the name Swinton associated with businesses in Timor Street for 152 years, it is amongst the oldest family businesses in Australia. This is a note book with a black cover with red binding. The cover which is creased and partly torn has a label affixed with handwriting in black ink. The label is torn and the writing is faded. The pages are white with printed blue lines. The entries are handwritten in black and red ink and red lines have been ruled on some pages. Aboriginal soldiers formed a special all volunteer platoon at No 9 Camp Wangaratta in Victoria from late 1940 until February 1941. No 9 Camp was set up at the Wangaratta Showgrounds to allow the formation of the 2/24th Australian Infantry Battalion prior to leaving for Egypt. Major Joseph Albert Wright a WW1 Light Horse veteran was in charge of this platoon the only Aboriginal squad in the Australian Military Forces at that time. On the right is (Staff )Sergeant Charles Edmund MORRIS V4127 and 7349 who served with the 7th Battalion during WW1. Jonathan Harris was born in Sussex England in 1822. His father Jonathan Snr was transported to Australia and his wife obtained permission to follow him as a free settler when Jonathan jnr was about 7 yrs.In 1842, Jonathan snr (who held a ticket of leave) and his son Jonathan Jnr were found guilty of theft and transported to Tasmania. Family history suggests that following his term, Jonathan jnr became a police detective before returning to Victoria. He and his wife had a store at Third White Hill in Bendigo and one day while walking to Eaglehawk, Jonathan found a rich vein of gold in what was to become the Hustlers Mine. He took large samples to England for crushing and subsequently sold his claim. Upon returning to Melbourne he conducted a business before taking up land at Axedale. He farmed here, including the growing of apples up until his death 20/7/1881. His efforts must have been successful as following his death the sale of property at Axedale included two pieces of land that each had two cottages that had been rented out. Glass bottles and glass jars are in many households around the world. The first glass bottles were produced in south-east Asia around 100 B.C. and the Roman Empire around 1 AD. America's glass bottle and glass jar industry were born in the early 1600s when settlers in Jamestown built the first glass-melting furnace. The invention of the automatic glass bottle blowing machine in 1880 industrialized the process of making bottles. In 2019, plans were made to re-introduce milk glass bottle deliveries to Auckland in early 2020 The earliest bottles or vessels were made by ancient man. Ingredients were melted to make glass and then clay forms were dipped into the molten liquid. When the glass cooled off, the clay was chipped out of the inside leaving just the hollow glass vessel. This glass was very thin as the fire was not as hot as modern-day furnaces. The blowpipe was invented around 1 B.C. This allowed molten glass to be gathered at the end of the blowpipe and blown into the other end to create a hollow vessel. Eventually, the use of moulding was introduced, followed by the invention of the semi-automatic machine called the Press and Blow. In 1904 Michael Owens invented the automatic bottle machine. Before this time most glass bottles in England were hand blown. This is one of four bottles in our Collection that were recovered by a local diver from the quarantine area just inside the Port Phillip Heads. Ships were required to pull into this area to check for diseases etc before they could head up to Melbourne. Quite often they would drink and throw the bottles overboard. Handmade glass bottle, manufactured in the 1850s-1900s. This child's cot cover was made by Vera Giles and is one of many 19th century items of furniture, linen and crockery donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by, Vera and Aurelin Giles. The items are associated with Warrnambool and the Giles Family history. Items donated by the family have come to be known as the “Giles Collection”. Many items in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage were donated by Vera and Aurelin Giles and mostly came from the home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton) who married in 1880 and whose photos are on display in the parlour. Henry was born at Tower Hill in 1858, and was a labourer on the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater before leaving in 1895 for around seven years to build bridges in NSW. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook and she attended Mailor’s Flat State School and where she eventually was to become a student teacher. After which she became a governess at “Injemiara” where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, had once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family consisted of six, some of the children were born at Mailor’s Flat and later some children at Wangoom. They lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, and this is where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane in 1940.The Giles family collection is of social significance at a local level, because it not only illustrates the level of material support the Warrnambool community gave to Flagstaff Hill during it’s establishment. This hand-knitted, white double-bed bedspread and matching round cushion were hand-made by Vera Giles. The process took her nine-and-a-half months. She presented it to Flagstaff Hill to be part of the Giles Collection. There are many 19th-century items of furniture, linen and crockery donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by Vera and Aurelin Giles. The items are associated with the Giles Family and are known as the “Giles Collection”. These items mostly came from the simple home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton), whose photos are in the parlour. They married in 1880. Henry Giles was born at Tower Hill in 1858. He was a labourer on the construction of the Breakwater before leaving in 1895 to build bridges in N.S.W. for about seven years. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook. She attended Mailor’s Flat State School where she was also a student teacher before, as a family legend has it, she became a governess at “Injemiara” where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family of six, some of whom were born at Mailor’s Flat and later children at Wangoom, lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane in 1940.The Giles family collection has social significance at a local level because it illustrates the level of material support the Warrnambool community gave to Flagstaff Hill when the Museum was established. Certificate, Education Department Victoria, License to Teach made out to Albert Steane, 25/09/1899
Born at Sandhurst, Victoria Albert Steane attended the Gravel Hill State School until the fourth class, then transferred to the Central School 1976 where he gained the Merit Certificate. The monitor system of teacher training had been introduced and he passed fourth, third, second and first class pupil teacher. At about 16 years of age he was appointed a teacher monitor at 12 pounds per annum. Albert Steane was awarded the Teachers' Certificate of Competency in 1897. He was the first headmaster of the Ballarat Technical School (1913), and opened the Sloyd (woodwork) Centre in 1902 at the Ballarat East Art School (later known as the Ballarat East Free Library). of Mines and Industries Ballarat (SMB). Steane is known for the teaching of Sloyd or woodwork, which was an important point in his career, and for his love of gymnastics. He was made a life member of the Ballarat Y.M.C.A. in 1968 aged 91 years. The teaching of woodwork in Victoria began in 1901 and Steane was chosen, among 18 others for the inaugural training course at Queensberry State School in Melbourne. Steane died, aged 93 years, on 13 July 1970, at Sydney, leaving his widow Grace Elliott Steane and children Eric and Violet. This 1871 coffin top Singer sewing machine was purchased third hand by a member of the Giles family in 1922. Its box-type lid was often used as a stool. It is now part of the Giles Collection. There are many 19th century items of furniture, linen and crockery donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by Vera and Aurelin Giles. The items are associated with the Giles Family and are known as the “Giles Collection”. These items mostly came from the simple home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton), whose photos are in the parlour. They married in 1880. 1916 William Henry Thomas of Keys Road , South Brighton (now Moorabbin ) in WW 1 1914 -1918 1st AIF uniform. William was born in 1894 , Christened at the Wesleyan Church. (Methodist), Wickham Road, South Brighton and attended Moorabbin State School. . Private Thomas was a market gardener in Moorabbin prior to his enlistment in the Australian Imperial Force on 19 July 1915. Both his parents wrote separate letters giving their consent for their son to serve overseas due to " the pressing request of my son William Henry, also the urgent need of recruits do give my consent that he shall go to the front." September 29th 1915 he left Australia with the 5th Reinforcements of the 24th Battalion for Egypt. March 1916 he was hospitalised with Mumps and shortly after left Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force for France where he transferred to the 6th Australian Machine Gun Company.. Whilst on leave in England he received medical attention before returning to France and 13 November 1918 he spent a week in the care of the 7rh Field Ambulance suffering with influenza . Private Thomas returned to Australia on the hospital transport Castalia 13 April 1919 and his enlistment was terminated 26 September 1919Private William Henry Thomas and his family are examples of the patriotism exhibited by the market gardeners, and indeed throughout Australia, during the World War 1 1914-1918. A recording made by H.R.H. Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh for Legacy Week in 1973 so that could be broadcast on TV. 1973 was the 50th Anniversary of Legacy. The text of the Prince's television message is: 'This is the 50th Anniversary of the foundation of Legacy which grew from some 14 members in Melbourne to more than 6,000 throughout Australia and now looks after 85,000 widows and 34,000 children of deceased ex-servicemen. This is a remarkable achievement and I think that Legacy is well known all over Australia for the very valuable work which it does for the widows of ex-servicemen and their children. I think that people have gone off to war and they have sacrificed themselves for things they believe in but they are always anxious, most anxious, about the people that they leave behind - their wives and their children. It's possible, of course, to set cup Government organisation to look after them, and to provide for them, but it needs something more than that. It needs the relationship which has gone because the father is no longer there and this is really the purpose of Legacy - to provide that essential personal element in looking after the widows of the men who went off to war and their children. A detailed list of duties broken into 4 parts; dealing with the occupants, the maintenance of the interior of the property, the maintenance of the exterior of the property and the catering and ordering of supplies. Also shows the conditions of employment, the salary was £5 a week with board included. The annual leave was 2 weeks a year. It was anticipated that a couple would manage the property so it outlines the days off per week could be taken together if proper supervision was arranged. The first manager was Mr Bert Frank and his wife was appointed Matron. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent.Shows the duties expected of the live-in manager was required to do in order to run Holmbush as a residence for children and the proposed remuneration and employment terms. Dress, circa 1920
This dress belonged to Ellen Davis, nee McLaughlin (1870-1956), great-grandmother of Margaret Lake. Ellen was born in County Donegal, Ireland. She married George Washington Davis in 1890 and the couple moved to South Africa, where George owned a bicycle store. During this time, Margaret says, Ellen "had a life of luxury, having servants at her beck and call and even sleeping at the foot of her bed to protect her from any harm". She was a "tiny lady of 5 foot tall" and George "could put his hands around her waist of 18 inches". On coming to Australia they opened a garage and taxi service in Graham Street, Port Melbourne. They lived here until Ellen's death in a road accident in 1956. Ellen gave the dress to her great-granddaughter when Margaret was ten years old. Aged 62, Margaret told BHS, "I have worn it on several occasions, mostly to costume parties and fancy-dress balls when I was younger. I have loved it all this time and displayed it on a dress model in my last home". As she had no granddaughter of her own to leave it to, she decided to donate the dress so that it would continue to be cared for.Sleeveless black silk crepe dress with V-neck and scalloped hem. Suit, circa 1908-1914
This ladies suit belonged to an elderly neighbour of the donor, Margot Miller, who lived in Black Street, Brighton in the 1970s. The neighbour had offered Margot a selection of her old clothing, dating from the early 20th century, as she wanted somebody to hold onto and care for the items after she died. Before Margot could take the items the neighbour was moved into a nursing home and, while cleaning out the house, the woman's son took the clothing to the tip with a load of rubbish. Margot happened to see him leave and was able to follow him and retrieve the clothes. They remained in the Miller family for many years; some were worn by Margot's daughters and some were ultimately passed on to others. Based on our research, we believe that the suit's original owner may have been Julia Richards (nee O'Keefe, c. 1882-1976), who lived at 59 Black Street during this time. Born in Ireland, Julia emigrated to Queensland in 1900. She married William Alfred Richards in 1911 and lived with him in Ayr, near Townsville, where they ran a hotel. It is unclear what became of William, but by the mid-1920s Julia and her two children were living in Brighton, where she remained until her death in 1976, aged 94.Cream wool ladies suit consisting of a jacket and skirt. Jacket is partially lined with silk, quilted around shoulders. Fastens with four self-covered buttons, one attached to a belt. Two box pleats at front and back, each featuring four decorative self-covered buttons at the waist. Upturned cuffs, each with two buttons. Letter, War Widows Guild, 1956
A file copy of a letter from Mrs Vasey of the War Widows Guild to Legatee Radford who was Vice President of Melbourne Legacy at the time. She says 'It was most heartening to read how staunchly you supported our idea that a man who dies in the service of his country should not leave his children to poverty and sub-standard living. Thank you very much indeed for speaking for us publicly in the unequivocal way you did." The War Widows Guild was founded by Mrs J M Vasey, the wife of Major-General Vasey. During the second world war she became secretary of the AIF Women's Association, a body which sought to help soldiers' wives. Her work with this body drew her attention to the plight of war widows. After Major-General George Alan Vasey died in an aircraft accident on 5 March 1945 she became a widow herself. At the end of the war Mrs Vasey founded the War Widows Guild. The Victorian War Widows Guild closed in 2021. Some items, including this letter, were donated to the Legacy archive for preservation - it shows a close bond between the two organisations. It was possible for a widow to be members of both Legacy and the War Widows Guild. This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr. Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. Japanese pottery and ceramics had varying basemarks, particularly those designed for export. Some restrictions were due to requirements imposed by other countries after WW2. This Japanese type of china was advertised in the 1920's and 1930's. During the years of the American occupation of Japan (1945-1952), all exports from Japan were marked "Made in Occupied Japan" and after the occupation simply "Japan". This information helps to establish the provenance of items such as this toast rack.This item is representative of ceramic domestic items used in Australian homes in the 1920s and 1930s.A ceramic rectangular toast rack decorated with a cherry design. Each end is shaped as a shallow bowl and there are 3 upright dividers to support slices of toast. The cherry design is hand painted and then glazed. The hallmark on this item identifies it as being produced by James Dixon and Sons of Sheffield, England. Their first corporate mark of the trumpet (bugle) and banner was granted in 1879, and the second with the name was added in 1890 and used until 1920, therefore helping to establish provenance of this set. The mark JD&S was used from c. 1920. The abbreviation EPBM in the hallmark denotes "electroplated Britannia metal". Britannia metal was generally used as an alternative to electroplated nickel silver.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. Roderick William Mills, known as Saltbush Bill (left) with his sons, James Charles Mills (centre) and John James Mills (right), in London. In 1917 Saltbush Bill travelled from America to London after giving shows in various cities of the US, to spend time with his sons. James and John Mills were serving with the AIF and on leave from the French front in London. Saltbush Bill remained in London for the rest of the war as he was unable to return to Australia. Saltbush Bill, was the inspiration for several poems by A.B. Paterson. Born at Balnarring in 1869, Mills earned the title of Saltbush Bill whilst working on a cattle station in Queensland. On these long droving trips, he learnt the art of cracking stock whips of many different lengths and sizes, a skill that earnt him £100 after a Melbourne saddler, J.K. Jennings, suggested that no man could crack a 65-foot stock whip in three tries. Saltbush Bill succeeded on his first attempt and decided to make a career in entertainment with his skill. Over his career he performed for royalty, travelled and performed extensively overseas and lent his skill to fundraising efforts, particularly during the war. His last concert was given in the Boomerang Hall in Dandenong in 1926.A local resident of the City of Moorabbin, Saltbush Bill was an ambassador for Australia and a literary inspiration to A.B. (Banjo) Paterson. Saltbush Bill, his wife Hannah Louise Porter and their 11 children lived in Old Dandenong Road, Heatherton, where Saltbush Bill and Hannah conducted a market garden for many years. A paper which was delivered to the Legacy in Victoria Conference in 1980, detailing Melbourne Legacy's involvement in housing the children of Legacy widows since 1942. By 1950 Melbourne Legacy administered four houses - Holmbush, Stanhope, Blamey House and Harelands - and cared for approximately 100 children. The houses were designed to be as homely as possible, and each one was largely autonomous. Children, many of whom came from country Victoria, would go to their own homes during school holidays and the Christmas season. The stated objectives were to 'pass out into the world young men and women with high ideals of citizenship, who are self-reliant and self-supporting.' Also 'to provide affection, security and a future goal and essential discipline.' The country Clubs and Groups would send provisions such as preserved fruit, cheese, eggs, honey, citrus fruit, butter, and potatoes throughout the year to support the residences. Numbers of residents declined during the 70s, and in 1975 a Residences Committee recommended that Blamey House and Harelands should be closed, leaving only Stanhope in operation, the first Blamey House having closed in 1955 with Holmbush being renamed the second Blamey House. By 1980 the only remaining house was Stanhope with an average occupancy of 20. See Cat. The document reveals details of the residences through the years. John Cleeland JP of Newhaven, 1826-1914, a native of County Down, Ireland, came to Victoria in 1840 with his parents and settled at Darebin Creek. After a few years spent there he went to sea in his schooner yacht of 200 tons, the Harriet, visiting the South Sea Islands and the west coast of South America. In 1859 he took the well known Albion Hotel, Bourke-street east, Melbourne, the starting place for all Cobb and Co's lines of up-country coaches, and kept it for 22 years, marrying whilst there Miss Blake, of Mornington. Shortly before leaving the hotel he purchased 7000 acres of land at Phillip Island for breeding purposes, and there bred Wollomai, who won the Melbourne Cup in 1875. In 1881 he retired to his magnificent estate, besides which he has another 1000 acres at Bass and other properties. He also once owned racing stables at Brighton, where he had Barwon (which won the Champion race) and other valuable horses. Mr Cleeland is a member of the Phillip Island Council and is a justice of the peace for the central bailiwick. Taken from Victoria and its Metropolis: past and present, 1888. I think the history of the School will be a valuable & interesting record. I was responsible for getting the present building & the plan initiated by me was adopted and carried out by Col Watson of the Public Works Dept. Outbreaks of poliomyelitis were common up until the 1950's when vaccine became available. The cause was not known and management was difficult - paralysis in varying degrees was the usual outcome. Public concern was high especially concerning children. One of the most significant Australians to suffer from this disease, was Alan Marshall (1902 -1984) who was born in Noorat, 15 kilometres from Mortlake. He wrote an account of his boyhood after he was struck down by the disease, in the internationally acclaimed 'I can jump puddles' (1955).Rectangular piece of calico'Shire of Mortlake. Parents or Guardians of all children aged eighteen and under coming into the Shire of Mortlake from the Metropolitan or any other area affected with Infantile Paralysis, MUST REGISTER such children immediately either personally or by post at the Shire Hall, Mortlake. 2. Parents or Guardians of such "registered" children are requested to keep them away from all public gatherings and from all contact with other children for a period of Twenty-one days, and in the event of any illness to consult a Doctor immediately. 3. Residents of the Shire with children living in the house are requested in their own interests, not to take into their homes, or allow their children to have contact with, any "registered" child. 4. The following particulars are required upon registration:- Name, Age, Sex, Local Address, Metropolitan School, Grade, Metropolitan Address, Date of Leaving Metropolitan or affected area.
