In 2017 a link with a Mrs Marjorie Duckett (nee Mclennan) in the late 20th C confirmed her role as secretary of the Altona Op Shop which provided funds to the Mission in the late 20th C. An image was also found in Ship to Shore newsletter of the MTSV.The Ducketts had links to the McLennan family also supporters of the Mission. This item was made by Mrs Helena warren of Newmerella. Helena Francis Warren (nee McKeown) was married to William John Warren and lived in Newmerella. She was a fine amateur photographer who supplied the photos for the Back-To-Orbost celebration book in 1937 and also designed the Back-To-Orbost badge. She was known for her soft toy making. Hemley George & Eliza nee Chandler. Eliza was born in 1838 in Bedfordshire England and died in 1914 aged 76. Liza Chandler married George Hemley on 4th Jan. 1854 in Shoreditch Middlesex. This photograph informs the viewer of the grand ballroom at Rippon Lea homestead in Elsternwick in the late 1800s. One of 33 rooms in this mansion, built for Fredrick Sargood in 1868, the ballroom stood where the swimming pool is currently located. Louisa Jones’ (nee Nathan) love of the 1930s Hollywood style prompted her to demolish the old ballroom and replace it with the swimming pool. Proceedings were opened in the Visitors' Centre by Barbara Rogalski whose father had catered for the Cottage opening in 1965. Rosalie Whalen (nee Schwerkolt) spoke about her early years in the area, after which the group walked to the cottage where a plaque was unveiled and a tree planted. Mrs Eliza Jeeves, wife of Ellis Jeeves, standing in the garden outside the Mountjoy Guest House in Kalorama. Eliza was one of six daughters of Thomas Hand and Eliza Hand, (nee Erith) who owned the Mountain Grange property. Eliza and Ellis ran the Mountjoy Guest House from 1908 and Eliza ran it alone after Ellis's death in a buggy accident in 1921 until just before her death in 1943. Laurie McCabe, a former porter at Wyelangta, a player in the local football team, and married to one of the potato-growing families, was the Station Master becoming the travelling station master and guard in 1930. Nancy (Nan) Josephine Pitt Withers was born 17 May 1897 at Heidelberg. She was the daughter of artist Walter Withers and Fanny (nee Flinn). Walter Withers and his family moved from Heidelberg to Eltham in 1903 where he set up his studio in Southernwood at the corner of Brougham and Bolton streets, Eltham. Ann Dale (nee Lees) was given this frame by her younger brother Thomas Chamberlain Lees, who was eighteen at that time. Thomas was the youngest son and seventh child of Lees and Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees. Ann loved her little brother’s artistic talents, which are demonstrated in this frame he designed and carefully carved for her. Thomas had cleverly finished the back with timber pieces around the images, and a section of a 1904 calendar. His “GOOD LUCK” is below the image of Ann, her husband Ellis Dale and their five children, c 1900. Sadly, Thomas died in 1911, aged 25. Ellis Dale’s father, William, was a quarryman who sailed from Yorkshire to Australia in 1852. He later bought land for Dale’s Quarries on the edge of Warrnambool in the area of Dale and Aberline roads. From the age of about eleven, Ellis and his brother worked in the quarry beside their father. In 1890 Ellis Dale married Ann Lees. Ann had lived nearby at Wangoom with her parents, Lees and Sarah Lees, who had had her photograph taken when she was a little girl, wearing her black dress. Ellis built a bluestone cottage for himself and Ann on his father’s land in Dales Road. He later added weatherboard rooms, and they named their finished home “Latrigg”. Early in their marriage Ellis recycled some empty dynamite boxes from their quarry to build a cupboard with drawers for Ann’s flat irons and other ironing equipment. The cupboard was used by future generations until recently, when Ann’s granddaughter, Betty Stone, donated it as part of the Chamberlain Dale Lees Collection. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.FANNY LAGAL (nee THOMPSON): Fanny arrived in Australia in the early 1920s. After her husband died she arrived on Phillip Island. She worked at "Summerland House" and later at the "Isle of Wight Hotel". She took great pride in keeping the altar linen and generally looking after the Anglican Church. Those who knew her said she was a gracious lady with a great sense of humour. Fanny went to a nursing home at Frankston where she resided until she died in February 1980, aged 90. Mrs Elma Camm (nee Freeman) was the wife of Herbert Desmond Camm. Des and Elma lived in Orbost from 1971-1980/1. Des died on 9/11/1980 and is buried in Orbost Cemetery. Elma moved away and is presently (2013) in care at Lakes Entrance. Elma's hobby was collecting shells and crafting them into interesting forms. Much of her work is in the Shell Museum in Lakes Entrance. The figurine in Orbost Museum was donated by Elma.This item is an example of the handcraft skills of women in the early to mid 20th century.A small figurine made completely of different shaped shells and set onto a wooden block as its base. Charity organisation, Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild,was formed within The Missions to Seamen Institute to provide a home away from home, for visiting seamen. The flyer was to recruit members. The flyer mentions the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and the bravery of the seamen staying in the engine room. The flyer mentions also Lady Talbot Margaret Jane nee Stuart-Wortley (1855-1937), wife of Governor Reginald Taldot, actively promoted advanced social welfare projects.This paper flyer holds historical significance at a local level because it illustrates the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild involvement in the Mission to Seafarers.The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild formally named in 1907 grew to become a significant charity in Melbourne raising large amounts of money which helped to establish the current MTSV building, supporting seafarers. These cello strings belonged to Edith Jacobs (nee Larwill) who was prominent in music circles in Queensland before her marriage to Henry Jacobs, a Warrnanbool Estate Agent and Auctioneer during the 1940s and 50s. Edith Jacobs featured in many concerts and musical entertainments in Warrnambool during the middle years of the 20th century. Her son, Frank Jacobs was a prominent businessman in Warrnambool in the 70s, 80s and 90s and the wallet was either made by him or for him. These items are of some significance as they belonged to Edith Jacobs, a musician who was prominent in the Warrnambool musical scene in Warrnambool in the 1940s and 50s.This is a light brown leather wallet, hand made with two fringed areas, one on the top covering. There is some machine stitching and some hand stitching (repairs)The wallet is lined with cream-coloured silk and the back of the wallet has an etching of an emu. This label comes from the business of Howard Sleath. He was a 20th century violin and viola maker and repairer from Queensland. The label is probably part of the memorabilia of Edith Jacobs (nee Larwill) who was a 20th century Queensland violinist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra before her marriage and change of residence to Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society has some of Edith Jacobs’ violin strings and the label may have come with them. This label is retained for display purposes and possibly as a memento of a local Warrnambool musician, Edith Jacobs. This is a photograph of Archie Dickson and his wife, Emma ( nee Wainwright), who was married in 1900 to Archibald John Dickson (1855-1930) There is an article noting his death in the Age newspaper, Melbourne, Thursday 12 June 1930, page 6 which reports him to have been the first white child born in the Orbost area. James Thomas Dickson, his brother, was the manager and then licensee of the Commonwealth Hotel in Orbost from about 1903. The story behind the coat is that it was created in the early 1920s by F.J.Ellimor,Brunswick furriers, at the request of Mr Walter Tepper. Walter Tepper lived on a property, "Woodlands" at Kewell, near Murtoa. He trapped the rabbits and took the pelts to Melbourne where he commissioned the furrier to make the coat for his soon to be fiancé, Ida. Walter Tepper is buried in the Murtoa cemetery. Walter's granddaughter Carol Michalicek's (nee Schultz) donated the coat to the Murtoa Museum.It is significant as it is a fine example of the use of rabbit skins to create a fashionable coat. It remains in very good condition, 95 years since its creation. The coat has a link to the Tepper family who have resided in the district for over 100 years. This dark brown rabbit fur coat is well tailored, with quality inner lining and a dark, even-dyed coat. There is so much detail in the design of the coat, including a gorgeous heart shaped pocket.
