Principal John Pascoe stands behind Senator John L. Carrick as he speaks at the official opening of stage 1 building of the new campus at Truganina, February 1979. Classes began in temporary classrooms a year earlier and students reflected on the hive of activity while buildings went up around them in the 1978 yearbook, Literata: 'We still had to put up with the noise of the builders finishing the building' D.W 'There was hardly anything to be taught in...I thought it was disorganised, lonely and hectic' K.H. 'I do not know how the workers completed the school in such a short time' A. DiM. In a longer piece, past student and school captain, Fiona Kellett, wrote: 'Where once there were just paddocks, we now have a fine school, of which we are very proud. "MR JOHN WHYKES AT THE ODD FELLOWS’ HALL. Mr John Whykes addressed an enthusi astic meeting of the ratepayers of the South Ward last evening, at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Albert street. Mr C. A. Welch was voted to the chair. The candidate, who was well received, explained his views on municipal matters. His remarks were received with favor, and were frequently applauded. Several questions were put and answered to the satisfaction of the meeting. A vote of cofidencc was passed, on the motion of Mr A. Reynolds, seconded by Mr Bromley. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair. To-night Mr Whykes will not address any meeting, being desirous of meeting the central committee, but tomorrow evening will address the ratepayers at half-past 8, at All Saints’ schoolroom, Drummond street.(Ballarat Star, 04 August 1887) The hall was demolished 2004-5.Six colour photographs of a weatherboard hall at 125 Albert Street, Ballarat. Black and white film showing Legacy girls at Legacy House in 1958 rehearsing for a demonstration. Shows Enez Domec Carre instructing them, and an unidentified woman (possibly Miss Williams) giving them elocution lessons with the aid of a blackboard and a reel to reel tape recorder. She does not remove her hat and coat. The film starts with the girls assembled in rows with bowed heads as if they are listening to a prayer. Two Legatees mark a roll book as the girls file past them in the gym. They are wearing gym slips with a Junior Legacy Club logo patched onto the chest. They rehearse both dancing and singing. Black and white with no sound. 7 mins 8 secs. This film has been digitised to preserve its content. Document - History of the Eaglehawk Croquet Club 1909 to 2003
The Eaglehawk Croquet Club was founded in 1909, in premises vacated by the Eaglehawk Bowling Club. There are no records for the years 1910-1942, but the clubhouse was unlined with no electricity or water. During World War II memberships dropped to just 7 members, however between 1943/46 membership increased to 23. Electricity was connected to the Clubhouse in 1947. During the years 1955-58 the club rooms were rebuilt and enlarged. 1959/63 Life Memberships were presented and the club celebrated its 50th birthday with sister clubs and past members. Golf Croquet was introduced in 1975 and was played on Wednesdays (as is still the case today). The club celebrated its 90th birthday with the oldest member at that time - Nell Mitchell- cutting the cake and a stained glass window was also unveiled. Document - Invitation, To Councillor A.J. McConchie and Mrs McConchie, 1928
Alan J. McConchie, a manufacturer’s agent, was elected to Kew Council in 1924, serving as a councillor for 21 years. He was elected Mayor of Kew in 1927-28, and again in 1945-46. During his second term as Mayor, he gained the support of Council for a pre-school plan which was the first of its kind in Victoria. The scheme established nursery schools and kindergartens as an extension of the existing baby health centres. Alan McConchie was active in Methodist Church work, and was one of the founders of the East Kew church, of which he was a trustee for 29 years. He was well known in the district as a cricketer and was a founder and past president of the East Kew Bowling Club. A Resident of Strathalbyn Street, he died in 1945 aged 60, while attending morning service at the East Kew Methodist Church. He is buried in the Burwood Cemetery. Handmade illuminated invitation to a notable Kew Mayor and MayoressAn illuminated invitation sent to the Mayor and Mayoress of Kew, Cr. and Mrs. McConchie, by a Citizens Committee to a Ball in the Kew Recreation Hall on 26 July 1928. Standing proud, still here, the spirit of ten ancestral matriarchs adorned in contemporary ceremonial cloaks. Representing our women past, present and future, her Spirit, our culture, our Country (spelt with a capital for its importance and this is part of First Peoples protocols on acknowledging Country, our strength, our resilience and healing towards a sustainable future. The white ochre was used to create the feather pattern. White ochre is deeply connected to spirit or ‘murrup’ as we call it in language. The ochre is used on our bodies in ceremonies to paint our body up and is also placed on graves when someone passes. The white ochre is our most sacred connection to our ancestors and is used to celebrate both life and death. Flag - VR Flag
This flag was flying at the Wodonga Station when VR Driver John (Jack) Bowden drove past it whilst at the controls of the “Southern Aurora” on 7 February 1969. The Sydney – Melbourne passenger train was bound for Melbourne. At about 7.05 a.m. the “Southern Aurora” collided head-on with the Melbourne-Albury goods train near Violet Town. 8 people lost their lives in the crash and 117 were injured. Driver John Bowden had died of cardiac arrest at some time before the collision. The driver of the goods train, Lawrence Rosevear, a good friend and workmate of Jack Bowden had tried to apply the brake when he realised the Aurora was not slowing down, but was unable to stop the impact. Lawrence also died in the crash. A memorial is maintained at Violet Town to commemorate those who died and also recognised those who helped in the aftermath of the tragedy.This flag is connected to the "Southern Aurora" train tragedy in 1969A large blue flag bearing the gold insignia of Victorian Railways. Report of a dinner held just after the beginning of WWII to celebrate the work of Sir Stanley Savige in establishing Legacy. Legatee Russell (President) introduced their patron, Sir John Gellibrand, who proposed the toast to Sir Stanley Savige. In his response Sir Stanley Savige outlined the history of Legacy to that date and how he was able to bring together so many Legatees with a common purpose to look after the dependants of WWI veterans. He said that although this need would disappear due to natural causes by the 1950s, the present war would ensure that the work of Legacy would continue. He highlighted the opposition of the Board of Management to affording the same opportunities to girls as those given to boys, and how it was got past. Booklet, 21 Years of Melbourne Legacy (H56)
An informative brochure marking the first 21 years of Melbourne Legacy activities, with a heavy focus on the assistance given to children, noting that 10,250 families and 25,872 families were assisted during the 21 years at a total cost of fifty two thousand and ninety seven pounds. It is interesting to note the call for permanent employment positions for boys and girls on the back cover. The notation H56 in blue pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. For many years Legacy had a "Back to Caulfield Race Day" for Legatees, widows and their families. 1995 was the 50th anniversary of the end of World War 2 and the race day was part of the "Australia Remembers" commemorations. Also a Legacy 'Lone Pine' was planted. The article in the Answer says: "Over 800 members of the Legacy family (past and present) reunite at the "Australia Remembers" Back to Caulfield Commemorative Race Day held on August 12th. It was a special day which incorporated a wide range of activities, including a display of military vehicles, a flyover, a parachute jump by the Red Berets, military bands, and displays of memorabilia when the racecourse was used as an army camp. An official ceremony also included the presentation of a Legacy 'Lone Pine' (a descendant of the Gallipoli 'Lone Pine') by the President of the Melbourne Legacy, Legatee David Millie, which was very warmly received by the Chairman of the V.A.T.C., Mr Peter Lawrence.Legacy retains a tie with Caulfield racecourse as it was once an army camp and staging post of young men going overseas to war and now it is the site of a lone pine. Article, Bulletin. A Tribute to Legatee Ken Green
An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Ken Green (President of Melbourne Legacy in 1981). The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. Legatee Green was born in 1917 and died in 1987. More details of his life are outlined in the articles. Legatee Ken Green served with the 15th Australian Field Company RAE 2nd AIF during World War 2. He continued with Citizen Military Forces after the war. He attained the rank of Major General with the 3rd Division between 1970-73. He joined Melbourne Legacy in 1959 on the nomination of Legatees Robert Myers and John Standish. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. According to the paper label "Over 300 Legatees participated in the ANZAC Day march commemorating Legacy's 70th Anniversary." Photos show the Legatees marching along St Kilda Road past the Melbourne Concert Hall, and two veterans talking at the Shrine - one of whom is wearing an OBE medal. (See also 00754 and 00755). Some of these photos were published in the May edition of The Answer. The article mentioned that the Anzac Day Commemoration Council allowed Legacy to march as a contingent because of Legacy's 70th Anniversary. President John Stevenson led the contingent of over 300 Legatees. All of the marchers received a sprig of rosemary as a gift from Legacy (and thanks to the widows that prepared them). An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Ian Anderson, a long serving Legatee, on 21st May 1987. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. Legatee Ian Anderson was President in 1964, during which there were 7,000 children in Melbourne Legacy's care and approximately 9,500 widows. Badge Day raised 120,000 pounds. He had also served on the Legacy Co-ordinating Council for many years and was it's president in 1969-1971. Also a death notice and note published in the Bulletin when his wife Gwenda Anderson passed away in 1989 The article was part of an folder about of past presidents that served on the LCC in preparation for the photo board that was produced. A hobbies page discussed model plane building. There pages on fashion and on possible careers. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War". Time is an abstraction, a filing system used to arrange events and memories into a logical system of cause and effect. This new print was created with images arranged from drawings made while sitting by paths near nature, creeks and overlapping streets. I am a local artist and illustrator with a history of drawing, painting and printmaking.10Press brings together a diverse group of creatives who were invited to make a new artwork inspired by the theme of ‘Moreland: its creative future, its past or other hidden stories’. Artists were invited to respond to the prompt ‘Moreland’, using only one or two colours. This body of work was created in 2022 during a significant time in local history, which saw Council’s name change from ‘Moreland’ to ‘Merri-bek’. The printed bellyband of the folio highlights this transition, with the word ‘Moreland’ crossed out and replaced with Woiwurrung language name ‘Merri-bek’. Commoners Press is a Coburg-based print studio that works with artists and designers in Australia and abroad on short run projects. Established by Jan Brueggemeier, Rob Eales and Neal Haslem in 2017, Commoners Press focus on projects that are community-centred, experimental and sustainable. When I visit Merri-bek I wonder, when I step on the tarmac of the Barkly Square carpark, what was here before? In fact, at this spot and across Brunswick there were clay pits, which would feed the pottery workshops in Brunswick that produced the pottery, gargoyles and decorative items for Marvellous Melbourne homes and suburbs. Marvellous for those who had profited from gold, property and finance, not so for those working in the clay pits. My print is a contemplation on what is beneath our feet and our relationship to the ground. I am a design academic working at RMIT University and began my print and design practice on a Golding foot-treadle Letterpress machine.10Press brings together a diverse group of creatives who were invited to make a new artwork inspired by the theme of ‘Moreland: its creative future, its past or other hidden stories’. The image is based on a 3D component of one of my recent series of jewellery artworks. The heart metaphorically alludes to two locations of Merri-bek. One is Moreland Road, the other is Wallace Street in Brunswick. These locations pinpoint a time of collective trauma and communal experiential reflection. I was born in Brunswick in 1984 and have lived and worked there since. Brunswick for me is filled with stories of family, community, growth, tragedy and history experienced across a Greek Diasporic framework.10Press brings together a diverse group of creatives who were invited to make a new artwork inspired by the theme of ‘Moreland: its creative future, its past or other hidden stories’. Ancestral Bouquet is a visual homage to the different plant species each migrant community brought with them to the lands of Merri-bek. It is a celebration of these plant communities and those (elderly migrants) who still know and practice traditional forms of food harvest and preparation. I was born and raised in unceded Wurundjeri Willum Country, in Coburg. My Father lived in the Southern Suburbs of Naarm as a refugee from Palestine, and eventually found Coburg as a place he could fit in as a migrant. This image of Coburg Olympic Swimming Pool represents my connection to Merri-bek / Moreland. Being brought up around water, swimming has played a key role in my family and I feel a sense of the community when swimming in a public pool. The gum trees and the proximity of this pool to the river reminds me of my home town, Albury. Photograph - Army Survey Regiment Freedom of Entry Parade, 1980
The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. 1980 was the third time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bob Skitch, the unit marched down View St in the CBD, along Pall Mall and up Gaol Rd to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor Paul Tomkinson and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995.These black and white photographs of the Army Survey Regiment were taken on the occasion of the Freedom of Entry parade to the City of Bendigo in 1980. The photographs were printed on photographic paper and are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. With two young kids, I often find myself at Coburg Lake on a weekend, playing amongst the natural beauty of the park area, rugged embankments, local birdlife, and... ‘Bin Chicken Island’. Bin Chicken Island has become a running joke in the community, known for its wafting stench and as an environmental eyesore (never go to the park on a warm day with an easterly breeze). So much so that someone added a campground listing on the island to Google Maps. Whenever I drive past the lake, I always keep an eye out for disgruntled backpackers who have realised that the only camping to be had is by the Bin Chickens themselves. I am a local graphic designer who lives in Pascoe Vale and works in Brunswick. My work is dedicated to the animal residents that cohabit with us in the suburbs. I focused on the Red Wattlebird, as it is always a welcome visitor across the gardens and parks of Merri-bek. The frayed edges of the page from my notebook are reminiscent of the act of note taking and how we remember and observe things in our daily lives. Schoolers Homestead Lake Lonsdale. Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. Similar Photo Scoullar station Rosehill Cat No 3888 G.F. Scoullar originally from Canada, according to W.G. Sharply in his 1930 Stawell Borough History, was a member of the Stawell Shire Council 1870-1888 and president 1875-1876. Maynard Ord in Stawell Past and Present says G.F. Scoullar, M. Brinkman and one other, took up small pieces of land fronting Lake Lonsdale. The owners of the Squatting Run, presumably Ledcourt, charged them with illegal occupation. They were heavily fined at Pleasant Creek Court, or in default gaol. As they could not afford the fine, some friends raise the money. Note re the spelling of ‘Schooler’. Variations in local records are ‘Schoullar’ and ‘Scoullar’. stawell education -

Painting - Artwork, Portrait of Malcolm Daubney, 2003
Framed portrait of Malcolm Daubney who was President of Vision Australia Foundation 1999-2002. It is part of a series of paintings commissioned by the AFB/VAF Board to commemorate the work of past presidents of the organisation. Mr Daubney wears a navy suit, pale blue shirt and navy blue Kiwi tie. Mr Malcolm Daubney has worked closely with blind and vision impaired people for many years. In the 1980s Mr Daubney was “volunteered” by John Wicking to the Vision Australia’s Kooyong Committee. Shortly after his appointment he was posted to Singapore for business, where he served on the committee of the Singapore Association for the Blind for five years. Upon his return he rejoined the Kooyong Branch Committee. Merri-bek’s bi-annual collection and the communities’ tendency to dump rubbish makes these temporal sculptures part of the visual landscape of walking in Merri-bek. The collections of personal items, untold stories and connections which we all piece together whilst on an afternoon stroll. Over the years trends in pet ownership and technology advances can be documented in discarded items, also commenting on wealth and material value of objects. I have been living, parenting, working and volunteering in Merri-bek for the last 9 years. As time passes the community and landscape shift and change as does my connection to it. A once dedicated art practice is now tumbled around with life and family.
