Article - KOOYONG ROAD, 230, CAULFIELD NORTH, ‘SANQUHAR’
This file contains two items about this property: 1/One page of handwritten research notes, compiled by Claire Barton, about a property located at 230 Kooyong Road, Caulfield North, known as ‘Sanquhar’. Barton acquired the information therein from two sources. The first source – an article from the Argus, dated 13/06/1956, accessed via Trove on 27/08/2013, and titled ‘Old Caulfield Landmark to be Cut Up for Homes’ – notes that the property is to be subdivided into 34 individual lots. The second source – the 1923 and 1942 editions of Sands & McDougall – list the persons dwelling at the property during these years. There exists a discrepancy between these two sources. The article from the Argus implies that the property was not divided until 1956. Fergusson for the Murrumbeena United Church to accompany Item 2. 2/Four original copies plus a photocopy of ‘St. Giles Presbyterian Church Murrumbeena (An Outline of Sixty-five Years of Progress) 1890-1955’. These include lists of clergy, significant congregational members etc. One of the books is noted ‘Doble’ on the cover, as sent by Allan Doble in Item 3. 3/Handwritten letter dated 15/01/1999 from Allen Doble which accompanied one of the books at Item 2. Dana Street Primary School still educates children in Ballarat. The old bluestone section of the school has been used as an early campus of the Ballarat Junior Technical School, as well as a campus of the Ballarat Teachers' College. In 1856 a printed notice was distributed around Ballarat announcing that Mr and Mrs C. Marin were opening a school in Doveton Street on 12 January 1857. The National School, supported by the Church of Christ, opened with 80 pupils, and attendance was between 9am and 12 noon, and 1pm and 3pm. On 12 March 1859 James Oddie, Peter Lalor, Dr James Stewart, Robert Lewis, J.B. Gray and C.J. James Redmond Gilbert (sr) was born in 1837 at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He married Ellen Spouse. He , James Gilbert died on 26 July 1900 at Melbourne, and is buried at Boroondara Cemetery (Kew). J.R Gilbert lived at Running Creek (later Havilah) for some time, and during that time was employed in one of the bigger mines in the district. Lonergan Robert O'Hara Burke Mrs Burke Kearney F.G ...Some possibility the author is writing about Robert O'Hara Burke, but he was not married.Two letters typed .1) An air letter form J.L. Lonergan of Eastern Pensylvania addressed to Ballaratt University, and eventuallty delivered to the Ballarat School of Mines. The letter requests information on a Mrs Burke of Ballarat, whose husband was lost in the Bush. Mrs Burke ran a boading house. The author worked for Morris Machine Works and remembered a Chief Engineery from Ballarat visiting the plant at the beginning of World War One. .2) A letter on University of Melbourne letterhead redurecting the letter to Ballarat. Scanned on 30th January, 2008 from Ida Oke's albums. Ida lives in East Ringwood and also contributed to the East Ringwood Recollections book. Wife of Bob (Robert William) Oke. Both Ida and Bob were heavily involved in the Scout movement, as were Bob's parents - Corrie and Ruby (Guides) Oke, who both lived in Old Lilydale Road, East Ringwood.
