Mould Candle Making, Circa mid 1900's
Candle stick manufacturing moulds were extensively used throughout the Kiewa Valley and its regions to provide rural homes and businesses with illumination during times of limited light e.g. night time. These candles were used before the Kiewa Valley was placed of the electrical grid. The candles were made from parrafin wax. Before the 1920"s electricity was in limited supply due to the inability of the private electricity suppliers to service isolated rural regions. It was not until the Victorian State Government passed legislation (1920) to improve electricity supplies by forming the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (S.E.C.V.) Isolated rural communities could not meet the higher costs to have electricity supplies connected and therefore it was not until the 1950's that adequate domestic electrical power could be supplied. The isolation that the Kiewa Valley provided was of a greater hindrance to any utility (power, roads & telephone) where the cost per instillation was beyond the rural population's ability to pay either directly or indirectly. One of the benefits that the "closed" community of Mount Beauty had, when it was administered by the SECV was that some utility costs were a lot lower than that of the other settlements in the Kiewa Valley. This disparity led to a conference in 1928 of the rural and regional councils to demand from the Government an equality of electricity tariffs. This equality did not take place until 1965. The demand and usage of cheaper and affordable lighting that wax candles provided was for some rural families a way of life until the mid 1900's.This candle making mould is made from mild rolled sheet steel(tin). The top basin is rectangular in shape with beveled edges(facing in on all sides. There are six holes in the top basin for vertical hollow tubes to feed off. The six tapered cyclindrical tubes running from the top basin to the bottom raised platform base. All connections are welded together. The bottom of each cylinder has an opening for the candle wick. The wick is positioned in place before the molten wax is poured into the cylinders. A positioning ring has been welded to one bottom ring for stability.parrafin wax, candles, domestic household ighting -

This type of pessary was often used for uterine malpositions and displacements and usually made from vulcanite. This particular object is known as Hodges moulded pessary. [Source: George Tiemann & Co Surgical Instruments catalogue.1989. page 486.] The pessary was originally regarded as an instrument and made from cork, ivory, hard rubber or gum-elastic. In later times, they were made from black vulcanite, flexible tin, soft copper wire covered with Indian rubber, and celluloid. The form of the pessary was and still is variable -either round, oval, or moulded in some cases combining three or four curves depending on the size of the pessary. In ancient times, medicated pessaries were made from emollient. astringent and aperient. Several of these are still used, but in more modem times are called vaginal suppositories. Anal suppositories are still used to suppress the pain of haemorrhoids. Moulded black vulcanite pessary. Pessary is irregular in shape, and medium size. Domestic object - Flour Sifter made by KANDE Australia, Kande Kitchenware Ltd, 1920 - 1960
Kande Kitchenware was established by Patrick Kavanagh and William English in 1922. The name Kande was formed from their initials, K and E. It had its Sydney factory in Little Collins Street, Surrey Hills. Kavanagh and English, a subsidiary of Kande Kitchenware, became a limited company in 1924, with both founders as directors. Another director was Test cricketer Jack Gregory, an all-rounder who slipped easily into the role of businessman. Gregory enjoyed success in business as on the cricket field, helping the company grow from a tiny operation to a major manufacturer and exporter that employed 80 people in 1931. They produced a wide range of utensils including cake tins, pastry cutters, pans and baking dishes. They managed to survive the difficulties of the Depression and were listed as a public company in 1949. Photograph, Annual Demonstration
A photo of junior legatees in costume for an Annual Demonstration, the date is unknown. Costumes were reused in different years. These costumes include a beefeater, an English soldier with a bear skin hat, a soldier with a tin hat and a girl in a floral dress. The floral dress costume was used in a scene set in Holland with wind mills in other photos but this could be a different year. It is possible this was taken at a rehearsal by a newspaper and used in promoting the event. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. Clock, Wall Clock, Late 19th century?
This clock has no known provenance but has been in the Warrnambool and District Historical Society collection for many years. This clock is a good example of a 19th century (or perhaps early 20th century?) wall clock and is an attractive display item. This is a wooden- frame clock for hanging on a wall. The face is tin painted cream with some paint missing. The numbers on the face are Roman numerals and the hands have Maltese crosses at the ends and are painted. The face is inlaid with 6 small circular dots of mother-of-pearl and there are seven similar inlaid circles on the wooden base. The glass covering the dial is hinged and brass-edged. The wooden base has fretwork and scroll sections and carved decorative edges and a rounded bottom. One side piece of the decoration is missing. The fretwork piece opens to show a brass pendulum. At the back of the clock are two pegs and a metal clip for hanging the clock. ‘Phillip Hunter & Co. London’ history of warrnambool, wall clock -

Projector - 'Pictoral' Bogong State School, 1925 - 1935
As Bogong State School was located in a remote area especially in winter when the weather and therefore the road isolated the school for an indefinite time, the school was provided with up to date equipment with a comprehensive library and educational films that wouldn't disadvantage the students. Educational films covered all subjects and areas of the curriculum. The projector was very modern at the time. The Society for Visual Education Inc was founded in 1919 as a for-profit educational publisher dedicated to the use of new technologies in teaching. This projector was used at the Bogong State School which opened in 1941 for the children of the employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria who were working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The school was outstanding as reported by the school inspectors regarding the education of the pupils which was also supported by new and modern equipment. The nearest school was 14 km away over a dirt road that wound around the Victorian mountains and often closed due to bad weather. Bakelite box holding a globe and a small black tin projector on brown rectangular bakelite base with 4 round rubber stands at each corner. It is able to be moved upwards from the front to adjust the height within a cm. The back is a tall irregular box shape with ventilation on 2 sides of the bottom and at the top. There is a brass plaque attached above 1 vent and an electric cord, with switch, below it. Attached at each side of the front of this box is a cylinder fitted horizontally facing the front where the lense is fitted. Book - BOOK, A CAMERA ON THE SOMME, BPA Print Group, C.2009
The origin of the book goes back to 2007 when a tin of nitrate negatives (Cat No 1248.2) came to the Bendigo RSL Museum via Aylene Kirkwood (Eaglehawk Heritage Society) and her friend Jean Grinton, Jack Grintons Daughter. The tin of negatives had been sitting in a shed at Jeans place for many years. The RSL Museum sorted some to see what they were about and were mostly WW1 era overseas. The Museum had some reproduced by Wayne Eels a Dark Room Technician and the quality was amazing. A small number were shown at an exhibition in a talk by Museum Curator Peter Ball in March 2008. The exhibition was called “Snapshots and Stories” by Corrine Perkin from the Bendigo Art Gallery and included a number of Bendigo Historical groups. The RSL Museum by then had put together 44 images in 11 frames to make a story (cat No's 5880P to 5890P) and shown at the Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Inc in April 2008. The exhibition included memorabilia from Jean Grinton. Corrine Perkin who was at the opening spoke to the Curator Peter Ball with the view that a travelling exhibition could be made from this. After discussions then began 12 months research between Corinne and Peter identifying people in the photos, places, deciphering Jack's Diary, researching the 38th Bn to gain an overall picture of Jack and Bert Grinton, producing photos for quality. Eventually an exhibition of photos (Cat No's 7100P to 7179P), story boards with photos (Cat No's 7180 to 7187) came into being. The opening was at the Bendigo Art Gallery on the evening of June 13th 2009 with Les Carlyon as guest speaker and went through until August 2nd. The exhibition was accompanied by memorabilia of Jacks Daughter Jean and Bert's Daughter Dorothy. The exhibition then went onto 4 more locations including the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Jacks service details are in Cat No 1280, Berts are in Cat No 1320P.Book, cardboard cover, 64 gloss pages. Front cover shows Jack Grinton in Barracks hut 19 England in 1916. Domestic object - Match Safe, after 1830's
This match safe was amongst various items collected from a sea dive in Port Phillip Bay. The diver was the caretaker of the Port Lonsdale Lighthouse, who dived on various wrecks in the bay during the 1960's. After the caretaker's death, his son sold off many of the shipwreck artefacts. The match safe was purchased from the caretaker's son in the 1990's by a previous owner of the Marine Shop, Queenscliff, Victoria. Pocket match safes or match safes were small portable boxes, or containers made in a great variety of forms and shapes, each with lids or covers to contain matches and retain their quality. Matches came into use around the 1830's and were produced extensively between the years 1890 and 1920. During this period everyone carried strike anywhere matches, so they could ignite stoves, lanterns and other devices. Early matches were unreliable and prone to ignite from rubbing on one another or spontaneously. Accordingly, most people carried a match safe to house their matches. Wealthy people had ‘match safes made of gold or silver, while common folk had ones made of tin or brass. They were made throughout the world including the United Kingdom, in the U.S.A., continental Europe and Australia. Significant English makers of cases were, Sampson Mordan and Asprey & Co. Significant American manufacturers of match safes include Wm. B. Kerr, Gorham, Unger Brothers, Battin, Blackington , Whiting, George Scheibler and Shreve & Co. Different patterns and types run into thousands as well as plain and decorative examples. They were also made in a wide range of materials, including pressed brass, pressed tin, gunmetal, nickel silver, gold, bone, ivory, the wood of varying types, early plastics like tortoiseshell and Bakelite, and ceramics. A distinguishing characteristic of match safes is that they have a ribbed surface, usually on the bottom, for lighting the matches. The item gives a snapshot into the social development through it's application in every day use match safes were used at a time when there were no safety matches and the early use of matches was a dangerous affair given they were easily combustive if rubbed together in a pocket for example. The item is also an example of the shipwreck artefacts gathered along the southwest coast of Victoria.Match Safe; hollow brass cylinder with ribbed match striker texture on base and screw thread around top. This photo shows the large mining cavity with a hydraulic sluicing machine in operation at Baarmutha Three Mile Mine, Beechworth . The Beechworth Mining District was one of six mining districts established by the Governor-in-Council on 4 January 1858 under the provisions of An Act for Amending the Laws Relating to the Goldfields (21 Vic no.32). The District was further divided into seven divisions: Spring Creek, Snake Valley, Three Mile Creek, Buckland, Woolshed, Yackandandah and Omeo. The boundaries of each of these divisions and of the whole district are described in the Governor-in-Council's proclamation printed in the Government Gazette, 5 January 1858, pages 3-5. Hydraulic mining is a form of mining that uses high-pressure jets of water to dislodge rock material or move sediment. In the placer mining of gold or tin, the resulting water-sediment slurry is directed through sluice boxes to remove the gold. It is also used in mining kaolin and coal. This photograph shows the impact the gold rush era had on Australia and the earth.A black and white rectangular photograph printed on photographic paperCopied from original on loan film (WEBB QLD) / Donated 2009 NOV/ Baarmutha Three Mile Mine c1920-1950/ Managed by John Weir Peter Jereen Jack Cox / Owned by Plain Bros then Parkinsons Sluicing.mining, gold fields, beechworth, gold rush, burke museum, photograph, mining cavity, hydraulic mining, hydraulic sluicing, baarmutha -

Domestic object - Tray, 20th Century
A tray is a shallow platform designed for the carrying of items. It can be fashioned from numerous materials, including silver, brass, tin, sheet iron, paperboard, wood, melamine, and moulded pulp. Trays range in cost from inexpensive moulded pulp trays which are disposable and inexpensive melamine trays used in cafeterias, to mid-priced wooden trays used in a home, to expensive silver trays used in luxury hotels. Some examples have raised galleries, handles, and short feet for support. Trays are flat, but with raised edges to stop things from sliding off them. They are made in a range of shapes but are commonly found in oval or rectangular forms, sometimes with cutout or attached handles with which to carry them. A more elaborate device is the tray table, which is designed to accommodate a tray, or to serve as a tray itself. There are two primary kinds of tray tables. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TrayThe use of the tray, and the various types.Metal rectangular tray with rounded edges and abstract design. In 1897 Lou De Grandi started a partnership with Alf George in Warrnambool and a year or two later opened his own business at 68 Liebig Street and in 1905 moved to 84 Liebig Street. Lou De Grandi’s own Warrnambool cycle make was called the Champion and cycle sales and repairs were combined with an electroplating service. Another shop was opened in Fairy Street but this closed when a new shop was opened at the corner of Lava and Liebig Streets. In 1922 Lou’s son, Ern commenced his own cycle business in Timor Street and this shop later moved across the lane in the same street (1935). Ern retired in 1960 and his son Cyril continued on the business as a sports store catering for over 20 sports. This shop closed in 2011. This grease pot, rusted and primitive, is of interest as coming from the Ern De Grandi cycle and sports store in Timor Street, Warrnambool. The De Grandi family was connected with sports stores in Warrnambool for over 100 years. This is a metal pot or jug with a handle, a detached lid and a pouring lip. A thin piece of wire is attached to the sides and acts as a carrying handle. The pot is much rusted. It has a metal plaque on the side of the pot with details of the original owner.‘Over 100 yrs old from Ern. Photograph, War widow and her grandchildren, 1990
Photo of a Legacy widow with three children in a kitchen. Two children are holding Legacy Appeal tins. It was taken for an article to promote a Legacy appeal in the Herald newspaper. The article explains that Legacy helped Amy Lloyd after her husband passed away a couple of years before. Mr Lloyd had served in the Middle East in World War 2 and had helped raise his grandchildren. The grandchildren, Amy 3, Justin 9, and Brenton 5, were greatly impacted by his loss. Legacy helped Mrs Lloyd with financial matters and in being granted a war widows pension. The article mentions that in 'the past the organisation primarily cared for the children and young widows of fallen comrades - now it is caring for rapidly increasing numbers of elderly widows.' In 1990 it was caring for more than 23,000 widows and the numbers were increasing by 100 a month. The estimate for 2002 was that Legacy would be caring for 45,000 widows.A record of the beneficiaries Legacy was formed to help and an example of the type of aid they can provide recently widowed women.Black and white photo of a Legacy widow and three children in their kitchen and a newspaper article from 7 September 1990.Handwritten '44' in blue pen, Copyright stamp of Herald Sun in pink ink on reverse.widows, legacy appeal, legacy promotion -
