... map of one-time Dutch New Guinea, surrounding waters.... A dotted border marks off Australian New Guinea.... in the Dutch language. A dotted border marks off Australian New Guinea ...The item dates from the years of Dutch influence in the region which ended in 1962. The region is now known as West Papua. As the above urls will show, West Papua's history is a complex one with various colonial powers disputing ownership with the local inhabitants. Modern Indonesia also lays claim to it. The area was part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands from 1949 till 1962. Prior to 1949 it was part of the Dutch East Indies. The item may well date from this pre-1949 period.Richly illustrated small rectangular glass ashtray showing map of one-time Dutch New Guinea, surrounding waters and smaller islands. Two endemic bids are also shown. The glas is a pale blue; the illustrations are in green and yellow; words are in black. The ashtray's four sides are curled slightly upwards.Oceans, seas and islands are named in the Dutch language. A dotted border marks off Australian New Guinea. -

Artefact, Wooden Pig
... papua/new guinea culture... River area (Tambanum Village) of Papua/New Guinea and of similar... tradition suggests that this pig came from Papua/New Guinea ...Oral tradition suggests that this pig came from Papua/New Guinea and was probably in the old Warrnambool Museum which was situated in the Mechanics Institute Building and closed in the 1960s (site of Warrnambool Library today). Illustrations have been found of similar carved pigs originating from the Sepik River area (Tambanum Village) of Papua/New Guinea and of similar items collected early in the 20th century. It is known that the old Museum had a considerable collection of South Sea Islands material but those items appear to have been mainly collected from the Fiji area. If the possible provenance of this item (Papua/New Guinea and old Museum) can be proved then it is a significant item as an example of an indigenous carving which may be more than 60 years old. The pig is very important in Papua/New Guinea as a source of food and a barter/currency item. Otherwise, with provenance not established, the item is useful for displayA brown coloured pig carved out of wood with several cracks on rear and front leg. White coloured incisions on snout, back and ears in patterns reminiscent of Pacific Island indigenous carvings. One ear broken and mended and the other with the top piece missing. He fled to Australia, from the Japanese, during WW2, being a German national. He was interned at Tatura, Victoria, where the internees made toys to sell for spending money. This truck was given to me, Don Kuhne, by my parents for Christmas about 1944. I am surprised that it lasted as long. My brothers used it. We towed it around the farm behind push bikes, etc. In the early 1960's I worked with Lutheran Mission New Guinea and had the pleasure of knowing Rev. Schoettler, helping with aerial food drops to his small mission station.Maroon truck, yellow radiator, black running boards and mudguards, green tray, 2 wind up handles with a pulley and cord which operates an extension ladder mounted on the tray of the truck. Upon ...An account of the author's family background & early life, more particularly those events leading to their internment in Tatura, Victoria, Australia during World War 2. The author's parents (author Hermine Wedel, nee Strauss) were of German nationality & practicing as missionaries in New Guinea. Upon the outbreak of WW2, those German nationals were ordered to the coast by the Australian authorities and the men were transported to internment camps in Australia. The women remained behind, reporting regularly to the authorities, until they too were brought to camps in Australia at the end of 1941. They were eventually reunited in a family camp for internees, Camp 3 at Tatura, in 1943. They were released from the camp to work in Australia in 1947 and the family returned to New Guinea in 1949, and eventually went back to Germany. The author also briefly recounts her marriage & married life in Brazil & Germany. 13 page document, A4 paper. 7 pages of English translation, 6 pages German original. world war ii, internee camps, civilian internees, german internees, camp 3, tatura, new guinea, strauss, stuerzenhofecker -

They sent a photo from New Guinea ...Photo from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. A photo of a past legacy boy Graham Lambridge (?) his wife and children. They sent a photo from New Guinea in March 1960 and he visited Stanhope in November 1963. It was pasted into a scrapbook of photos and newspaper clippings that was possibly compiled by the Matron of Stanhope. It shows past residents kept in contact and sent photos back to Legacy and visited at times. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01836. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. An example of the impact the residence and care had on the lives of the junior legatees that they kept in touch with each other and the home.Black and white photo of past resident living in New Guinea in 1960.stanhope, residences, junior legatee -
