It is not known how these goggles belonging to the late Evan Johns were acquired. Evan did not enlisted in the Defence Forces but did have an interest in aviation.The frame of these goggles is in excellent condition with virtually no paint loss and only minor marking. The pressed brass frame incorporating hinged lens holders is finished in black paint.The nosepiece leather and backing chamois are both good . The original rubber facepads are in excellent shape and remain pliable; The clear lenses do have delamination marks . The strap components are excellent throughout with clear Air Ministry markings. This bottle contains the medicine mixture for diseases of the liver and kidney that was patented by Dr Law of Boston. In the late 19th century Dr Law was a prolific and popular producer of patent medicines. The Warrnambool manufacturing chemist, Richard Kennedy, had the sole rights in Warrnambool to prepare and distribute Dr Law’s medicines. Richard Frank Kennedy (1826-1903) was born in England. He came to Warrnambool in the early 1880s and set up a pharmacy business in Timor Street. He was a retail, wholesale and manufacturing chemist. In 1891 he erected a new building and at that time his shop was described and one of the most elegant and best-stocked chemist’s shops in Victoria. Kennedy was active in Warrnambool community affairs and he was a foundation member of the Warrnambool Bowls Club, being its first Vice-President and an early President. His business continued after his death, trading as R.F.Kennedy and Co. This item is of considerable significance as it is the only example we have of a Dr Law patent medicine produced and distributed by the Warrnambool manufacturing chemist, Richard Kennedy. Both Dr Law and Richard Kennedy used an image of a lighthouse as a business symbol though the images are not identical. This is a glass bottle with a cork containing a chemist’s mixture for diseases of the kidney and liver. The bottle is enclosed in a brown paper cover which is lined with what looks to be the instructions for the use of the medicine. (The bottle is unable to be removed from the covering without major damage to the cover). The covering is brown with images of Dr Law and his lighthouse logo and printed material in brown and white colouring with the name of the product and its benefits. By 1910 revenue from the Beech Forest railway was $15,500, working expenditure $12,000, with a net loss (including interest charges) of about $4,000. This and the following year were the lowest net losses ever experienced. Passenger journeys rose steadily, outwards goods traffic rose to a record 12,959 tons (in 1911), and inwards goods traffic was a record 3,359 tons.. The railway station possessed a goods shed, stock race and yards, engine shed, coal stage, crew cabins, a refreshment room, and a four-roomed station building, with the station staff to match. Beech Forest was the principal despatch centre at this stage for split timber. A4 size wire-bound book compiled by Bryce RaworthINTRODUCTION: This heritage impact assessment (HIS) was prepared at the request of the City of Maroondah, the owner of the subject property at 1 Bedford Street (sic), Ringwood. It relates to a proposal to demolish the existing shop on the site and construct a multi-storey car park incorporating a commercial tenancy at the lower levels. It reviews the significance of the existing building on the site and the contribution it makes to the surrounding streetscapes, then comments on the heritage impacts of the proposed demolition in the context of the significance of the place and broader considerations. This office has previously provided an Historical Overview of the subject site (June 2020) and this assessment draws upon that previous research and analysis. The report has been prepared by Guy Murphy and Bryce Raworth. CONCLUSION: The proposed demolition of the former Blood Brothers Store at 1 Bedford Street (sic), Ringwood and the construction of a multi-storey car park on the enlarged site will result in the loss of some significance to the Heritage Overlay. The degree of loss is moderated by the partial intactness of the store, its modest character and the loss of its original setting, as well the proposal to implement a heritage interpretation strategy for the site. When considered in the context of the broader range of urban planning considerations and broader net community benefit, the proposed development is supported with respect to heritage impacts.

The Cataraqui, carrying British emigrants, was wrecked on King Island in 1845 with the loss of over 400 lives. The British Parliamentary and general public outcry following this disaster resulted in the establishment of the lighthouse at Cape Otway in 1848 (and indirectly the establishment of Warrnbambool in 1847)This button, listed as a uniform button, is of some interest as a small relic of the shipwreck, Cataraqui.
