Yields information about one of Ballarat's bogie trams prior to its conversion to a one-man-type car.Digital image from the Wal Jack Ballarat Album of Ballarat 38 prior to conversion to a one-man type tram in Sturt St climbing the hill to Lydiard St. No details as to photographer and date. The tram was converted to one man operation in 1953, but was banned as such by the union at the time. Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Rare photograph of the demolition of the Zig-Zag Bridge linking the two asylums on either side of the Yarra River.Digital copy of a photograph from page 16 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. The kerosene lamp is a type of lighting device that uses kerosene as a fuel. Kerosene lamps have a wick or mantle as light source, protected by a glass chimney or globe; lamps may be used on a table, or hand-held lanterns may used for portable lighting. There are three types of kerosene lamp: traditional flat wick, central draught (tubular round wick), and mantle lamp. The screws on the side adjust the flame and hence the strength of the flame produced. The first electrical hearing aids were carbon and were made possible by the invention of the carbon microphone and were made between 1900 and 1939. Carbon, which can be made to amplify electrical current, was used to provide some amplification prior to the invention of vacuum tubes. Later models often came with mechanical (carbon) amplifiers to try to boost the amount of amplification. The carbon microphone was originally invented for use in the telephone and had the properties of being able to modulate current. It is this property that made it useful in the early electrical hearing aids. An example of a carbon hearing aid. This has an imitation tortoise shell casing. Mrs. Axie Mazèl - Krammer and her friend Anneke Rappard each had two daughters with them in the Women's camp in Banjoe Biroe. Prior to her marriage Axie Krammer von Marchau had studied languages, literature and pedagogy and particularly the art of teaching through play. The spirit and optimism of these two women contributed to the survival of their 4 little girls. An accomplished artist Mrs. Mazèl created the original of this booklet for the 6th birthday of her friend's daughter Anne Marie on July 30, 1945.The illustrated story of children playing at internment does not hide the reality of their lives but puts in the context of a game of make-believe. The make-believe is illustrated in colour while the harsh reality is recognised in a small black and grey sketch in a corner of each page. Simply produced 30page booklet. It is the printed version of a handwritten booklet produced in July 1945 by Mrs Axie Mazèl Krammer to help her children deal with the memories of their imprisonment by the Japanese in the former Dutch East Indies. The materials and style imitate the simple materials that were available for the author during their 4 years of imprisonment and deprivation. The name "A. Ten unique hand painted poles (wooden telegraph poles) reflect the surroundings of Lake Wendouree and tell First Nations' peoples stories. Tom Clark created the Koori Totem Poles prior to the establishment of the North Garden Indigenous Sculpture Park. The work is a set of 10 poles decorated and carved with ‘Koorie’ motifs and references and was commissioned originally for Ballarat’s Begonia Festival. In May 2000, the Victorian Mounted Rifles Squadron 4/19 Prince of Wales's Light Horse relocated from its depot, Buna Barracks Albury to a new depot at Building 105 North Bandiana. The relocation included the regiment's heritage collection, and its heritage vehicles needed to be moved. Buna Barracks had been home to the 8/13 VMR since 1948, and to the city's citizen soldiers for fifty years prior to that. Following the move the historic Drill Hall was demolished and the land sold for residential development. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance in April 1990. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The couple from this photo has gone through great hardship in the period they spent as refugees. They fled Southern Vietnam (Ca Mau) after the Vietnam War in late 1979 when the chinese have invaded and settled in Vietnam. They came on the #91 boat called Minh Hai 375 and arrived at the island on 10/22/1978. Prior to that they were ambushed by pirates who tried to rob, rape and completely take advantage of the vulnerable state the refugee people in. They recall having to purposely sink the boat so that they can be allowed into the country.This photo is great evidence to the family value Vietnamese refugees hold in the period of the period of fleeing the poor conditions that exists back in their country. People put their life online just to HOPE for a better life. Family portrait of a couple and first born child (son) in front of what look like their home at the time. This was taken at 1979 on the island called Pulau Bidong. It's a photo which has been laminated onto a light blue backing paper. This uniform belonged to Jane Reid when she was a member of the 4th Kew Scout Troop. Jane joined Scouts in 1990 and was one of the first two girls to join Scouts in Kew. Prior to this, the Scout Section was restricted to boys only but was progressively opened to girls. Now girls are members in every section. The khaki shirt bears the Kew District badge on the right and the Scout Membership badge on the left. On the left sleeve is the patrol badge and target badges. The trowel and mallet set was purchased by Mr Swanson, the builder of the Maryborough (Victoria) Railway Station prior to the planned ceremony for the laying of the foundation stone. Duncan Gillies. the Victorian Premier, was to lay the foundation stone, but his government was defeated in the week before the scheduled ceremony. The trowel and mallet set was never used. This set was held by the Maryborough Borough (later City) Council and lay unidentified for almost 120 years until a receipt from the jeweller was discovered. The set was donated to the Maryborough Midlands Historical Society in 2010.Ceremonial trowel and mallet set in brown leather covered presentation case with blue satin lining. It was the home of Mr Charles Henri Dillon Steele, a dentist of Collins Street, his wife Sarah (nee Russell) and daughters Harriette Vevers (Hattie) and Margaret Dillon (Nancy). They are pictured with grandmother Mrs Sarah Ann Vevers Russell (nee Lasslett), who with her husband Alexander lived at 'Clifton', Union Road, Surrey Hills from prior to 1903. This item is from the "Barone" Collection. "Barone" (also known as "Seaview") was a stately Brighton home built at 9 Moule Avenue prior to 1855 and demolished in 1986. The house's residents included Edward Elgin Browne (during 1859-72), a Melbourne tea merchant, and the family and descendants of retired Scottish Army captain Archibald Black (during the period 1880-1970).
