Irons such as this were very popular prior to the widespread introduction of electricity in Australia. It was manufactured by the Tilley Lamp Company Ltd. In 1818 John and William Henry Tilley established W. H. Tilley, in Stoke Newington, London, England. During WW1 they started to use paraffin as a lamp fuel in pressurised containers. A production plant was established at Hendon, just north of London, and the first commercial lamps were produced after World War 1. During the 1920s the company diversified into domestic lamps. This expanded to other appliances such as heaters and eventually to irons. The use of paraffin or kerosene as a fuel was a much cleaner form of heat, especially when compared to older flat irons which used coal.This item is significant because it is representative of domestic appliances used in the Wodonga District prior to the introduction of electricity throughout the area.Cream coloured iron with a black Bakelite handle which attaches to the fuel tank. This banner was constructed by a group of Deacons and Deaconesses at a National Diaconate Conference held in Melbourne in February 1993. The banner was originally held at Catherine Ritchie House. It is significant because it was put together by a group of Deacons who were ordained in December 1992 and Deaconesses who gathered for the biennial National Diaconate Conference which was held in Melbourne in February 1993 prior to the formal establishment of DUCA (Diaconia UCA, the national body of Deacons and Deaconesses in the Uniting Church in Australia). This conference happed at a time leading up to a special service in Wesley Uniting Church in Melbourne when 12 Deaconesses were ordained as Deacons in Feb 1993. Glenorchy Bridge Wimmera River. Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. Prior to the construction of this bridge in 1860, there existed two forwards across the Wimmer River at Glenorchy. One was 2 miles on the Stawell side of Glenorchy and 500 metres from the present railway bridge. It was well made, stone floor and can be seen today. The second was located 800 metres downstream of the town and was known as Stuart’s Crossing. These Fords were popular crossing spots for Bullock Drays which were delayed for days during floods before the bridge was built. The original Bridge was built near the site of the present ‘old’ bridge. stawell

Sponsored by Alfred M. Nicholas the Deco era Mission building facing Beach street built by Architect Harry Norris opened in 1937. The building was then in WW2 requisitioned with the Mission returning to full use of the complex some years after the War ended. The building in later years was relinquished due to decreasing shipping at Port Melbourne and need to consolidate seafarers services in the Central Mission at 717 Flinders St. The building was used as an art centre just prior to demolition in the 1990s. The Port Melbourne Historical and Preservation Society was instrumental in ensuring the the old foundation stone was preserved in the sea wall opposite the original site. A single brick from the building is also part of the MtSV Heritage Collection. The Mepunga & District Racing Club was formed at a meeting of sportsmen from various hamlets east of Warrnambool held at the Allans Forest State School, Mepunga West. The club was formed to conduct picnic race meetings in aid of charity and patriotic funds. On the committee were two representatives from Allansford, Cudgee, Mepunga, Nirranda, Nullawarre and Panmure, with Mr. W. Bant of Panmure elected as president. The club held its first race meeting, at Warrnambool, on 22 April 1944 in aid of district Red Cross Funds. It held four annual picnic race meetings from 1944 to 1947. This photograph is of Robert O'Hara Burke (6 May 1821 – c. 28 June 1861) who was an Irish soldier and police officer who achieved fame as an Australian explorer. He was the leader of the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition, which was the first expedition to cross Australia from south to north, finding a route across the continent from the settled areas of Victoria to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Prior to leading this expedition, Burke was the superintendent of Police in Beechworth from 1858-1860. The Robert O’Hara Burke Memorial Museum was named in honour of Robert O’Hara Burke after his death at Coopers Creek in 1861 during expedition. Prior to 1929 Yarrambat was known as Tanck's Corner or Reynold's Corner after Frederick Tanck who owned land north of Ironbark Road at the corner of Yan Yean Road, and Thomas Ryenolds who owned the property opposite. Tanck's Corner was at the centre of gold bearing country. Gold was mined here until 1984 when the last operating mine, the Golden King mine in North Oatlands Road closed. It was owned by the Clayton family and in the 1960s was the only private family gold mine in Victoria. Larger mines had their own batteries and stampers to process the ore. The 11th Battalion, Australian Infantry was raised at Blackboy Hill Camp Bellevue in Western Australia on the 17th of August 1914. Following a period of training of just 2 weeks the Battalion embarked at Fremantle on the HMAS Ascantius on the 11th of November 1918. The Ascantius formed part of a convoy 38 troop ships carrying approximately 35,000 Australians and New Zealanders and reached the port of Alexandria Egypt on the 3rd of December 1914. After arriving in Egypt, the Battalion camped and trained at Mena, ten miles from Cairo at the foot of the great pyramid Cheops. These wool undervests were purchased by Edith Bender for her husband Edwin, prior to 1963. Edwin would catch a ‘Red Rattler’ train along the North Shore line to go to work in Pitt Street., Sydney. Edith was concerned Edwin would catch a cold in the unheated train or in his unheated office, so she brought these woollen undervests for him to wear to work. Edwin would wear the undervests under a woollen suit and with a woollen overcoat. Edwin passed away in 1963, at which point Edith stored the undervests away. They were passed to Edith’s daughter when Edith passed away in 1980. They were then passed to Tanya Davis on the death of her mother. Tanya donated the undervests to the National Wool Museum in 2021.2x cream wool undervests. Henley style with short sleeves and three buttons at the front. 20th Light Horse competed at the RAS in the period prior to WW11. The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Upon its return in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion. Frederick V Trickey had extensive service with the Victorian Colonial military prior to 18 months service in South Africa. His World War One service included Gallipoli and Western Front with 8th Infantry Battalion AIF. He served in World War Two but did not proceed overseas. Major Frederick C Truckey had pre-war service with 8th Light Horse and Australian Army Instructional Corps; then during World War Two he served with 2/8th Armoured Regiment AIF. Following the war, he joined the Australian Regular Army and served in Korea. These binoculars belonged to Lieutenant Thomas Spencer Howard, 8th Australian Light Horse Regiment. Howard was killed in action in the charge at the Nek, Gallipoli peninsula, on 7 August 1915. Howard was a 25-year-old grain dealer from Melbourne when he enlisted in the AIF and was appointed a lieutenant in the 8th ALH on 24 October 1914. He had pre-World War One service with 10th Light Horse (VMR), 11th & 29th Light Horse Regiments. Prior to sailing he was presented with these binoculars: “Lieut TS Howard 8th LH, 3rd Aust Imp Exped’y Force, From Chief and Staff of J.F.C. Jan 1915”. The two-storey house at 104 Peel Street, known locally as The Mousehouse, was built in 1890 of stucco-rendered handmade bricks. The ground floor façade suggests that the front door originally opened directly onto the street. Prior to 1915, the house was numbered 184, but the street number changed to 104 in that year. Early residents included Henry Martin, Mrs Henrietta Blythe and A. R. Chaffer, the two latter being shopkeepers. The eminent dentist Samuel E. Wills, who had rooms in Collins Street, moved to the house in 1897 and lived there for six years. He was reputed to have conducted a dental practice in the cellar. Wills proposed the establishment of a Dental College in Melbourne and helped to frame Victoria’s dental rules and by-laws. Cerberus Trophy Donor : Deed of Gift: No For several years at the end of the season, the yachts Dystiny and Phantom had a picnic race to the Cerberus located at Black Rock. This was later taken up by the RBYC and became the end-of-season race for all RBYC yachts. The clubs’ staff set up a BBQ and bar on the deck of the Cerberus and a great time was had by all prior to returning to the RBYC. Later when the Cerberus became too dangerous to board, the destination was changed to a laid mark north of the wreck with the race finishing at the RBYC tower. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The photos shows a crowd of school children facing the forecourt of the Shrine with many assembled on the steps. It appears there was a flagpole erected in the forecourt. The photos were in an envelope from The Argus and The Australian newspaper, addressed to Legatee Gillespie. Items were in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies. This map shows allotments of land on the northern side of Lerderderg Street from Gisborne Road through to the approximate site of the present day Bacchus Marsh Primary School. There are also allotments shown on the southern side of McFarland Street between George Street and Gisborne Road. Larger allotments of land are shown extending northwards towards Masons Lane. Inscribed at the top of the map are the words, 'Plan of Subdivision of Cr Pors (Crown Portions) 12 & 13 & Allotments 1,2,3,4, Block 3, Parish of Korkuperrimul, County of Bourke'. On the 14th May 1927 his Excellency Lord Somers, in the presence of a large assemblage opened Braille Hall at the Braille Library (now Vision Australia Library) in Commercial Road, South Yarra. To mark appreciation of the gift of the hall by the two benefactors Edward Wilson and Richard Gibson, the committee placed two of the stained glass windows on each side of the hall’s fireplace. Commissioned by Librarian Miss Millicent Ritchie, the windows depict four British authors - Scott, Milton, Shakespeare and Dickens. They were removed from South Yarra in 1999 for conservation work and cleaning prior to their relocation to Kooyong in 2001. The original Hall Braille writer was modelled on the typewriter and was the first successful mechanical point writer. Frank Haven Hall, Superintendent of the Illinois Institution for the Blind, introduced his invention to the public on 27 May, 1892 at Jacksonville, Illinois. It was manufactured by Harrison and Seifried, Chicago, ca 1892. The carriage moves one space to the left as the keys are released. The styli in the embossing heads are controlled by the keys as are the bars on a typewriter. The styli operate from the back so that letters appear in the normal position for reading. Braille writers enable all dots in a Braille cell to be created simultaneously. This model was found in the Braille and Talking Book Library in South Yarra prior to the staff departure in 2000. The tramline curves to the right into the depot whose entrance lies between Blakiston & Co on the right and the MESCo's offices on the corner of Yarra St., to the left. Note its ornamental turret, removed in the 20s. The carefully arranged poseurs are employees of the Company, recognisable from the other photographs. The 18 letters are from Arthur Edmund TRANTER V50166 & VX52843 POW. they are to his wife Pat and Daughter Brenda from Darley Camp Australia, at Sea then in Malaya prior to becoming a POW. The exercise book was written by "Tranter" to his daughter Brenda while a POW in "Gloegoer Camp" near "Medan" in Northern Sumatra. It was dedicated to his daughter. He managed to keep this hidden throughout captivity in pristine condition. Throughout the book there are subheadings, Sumatra, Singapore, Rubber, Soedaa, Siboertoet, Malacca, The story of the Cocos Islands, the Celebes, Dutch Borneo. They are the stories of these places. Stathi Raftopoulos and his son Spiros are pictured outside shops in Merbein which were once owned by Stathi's family. The Merbein shops were owned by Efstathios Raftopoulos (Levendi) and his son Spiros Raftopoulos, grandfather and father of Stathi Raftopoulos. The family were from the village of Kolieri on the Island of Ithaca, Greece and migrated for Australia at different stages. Efstathios arrivied in 1895, son Spiros in 1922, and the younger Stathi (accompanied by his father Spiro who had returned to Ithaca to see his family) in 1933. Stathis' mother Hariklia and siblings Nakis and Loula arrived soon after. The family settled in Merbein, west of Mildura, where they ran a business until the late 1930s prior to settling in Melbourne.A coloured photograph of the exterior of a corner shop. Significant items relating to Albert Telfer White who entered Ballarat College April 1912 and left December 1918. Albert was born 29 June 1897 at his home 'Ashford Vale" farm, Cuthbert's Road, Cardigan. Albert, a second generation Australian, was the fourth son and sixth of eleven children born to dairy farmer John White and his wife Elizabeth, nee Douglas. Albert attended Bunker's Hill State School prior to enrolling at Ballarat College. After College he obtained employment with the engineering firm Ronaldson and Tippett in Ballarat. Following his eighteenth birthday Albert enlisted in the AIF in Ballarat with the rank of Private, No 2012. He embarked for the Middle East with 23rd Battalion on 26 August 1915 and was 'taken on strength at the Gallipoli Peninsular 25 October 1915". On 10 January 1916 Albert was posted to Alexandria, Egypt and during this time he was able to meet with his aunt Rose Douglas, an Australian Army Nursing Sister. This was a great comfort to his family. Albert was sent to France 19 March 1916 and transferred to the 22nd Battalion. He was mentioned in dispatches for 'good and gallant conduct' 5 August (1917?). Albert was hospitalised 30 March 1918, rejoined 22nd Battalion 3 June 1918, wounded in action 3 October 1918 but died of wounds at Rouen 10 October 1918. news of his death was received by his family n Australia just prior to the armistice. Albert Telfer White's sacrifice is commemorated at Ballarat College, Avenue of Honour Ballarat (Tree 1214), Ballarat Shire Honour Avenue Learmonth (Tree 163) and the Australian War Memorial Canberra. This medal from the estate of W.C. Busse is believed to have been awarded to a recipient at the Rutherglen Agricultural Show in 1885. Due to degradation of the embossed markings, it is uncertain what the medal was awarded for or whom it was awarded to. It may have been awarded to a member of the Busse family prior to W.C. Busse's birth. Rutherglen is located approximately 18 kilometres from Chiltern. European agriculture and horticulture in the area was well established prior to the discovery of gold in the region in the 1860s. It held its first yearly Agricultural Show in 1880; in the present day it has a sister event focusing on showcasing the region's wines. Wilfred Clarence Busse was born in Chiltern in 1898. He went to school at Wesley College in Melbourne, studied law at the University of Melbourne and became a barrister. Additionally, after spending time on a Victorian station in his early twenties, he wrote two historical novels about bush life. His first novel was 'The Blue Beyond: a Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia', written in 1928 and published in 1930. Busse's second novel was titled 'The Golden Plague: A Romance of the Early Fifties'. The judges of the Henry Lawson Society's T.E. Rofe competition to advance Australian literature unanimously awarded it the Gold Medal in 1931 for the best historical novel of 1930. Newspaper articles about the award mention the writer's meticulous documentary and oral history research regarding life on the Gold Fields in the 1850s. It became a best-seller. Busse also wrote a series of articles about local history for "The Federal Standard" newspaper in Chiltern. He was a member of the Chiltern Athenaeum. He died in 1960. This item is significant for the information it provides about the development of industry and local culture in Victoria in the 1880s. Under sheet number of TYE 1-250, has date of (R6/63). 3045.3 - similar to 3045.1 - but different TYE number and differences in font etc. While fare denominations to max value of 7d, has does not have City and Pensioner fares - used prior to the introduction of these fares - 1/11/1955 to 1/7/1958. Dave O'Neil confirmed June 30/2009, after some searching at West terminus, photo was taken outside of the hotel. House with the chimney is still there. Though prior to 1951, West trams terminated at the Railway Station or Beach, and late 1930's at the Wharf. Some trams would do trips from those points to West and then would do a Newtown or Chilwell. This could explain destination showing Newtown, wasn't changed from Newown trip. Also in war years, some trams travelled from West to Newtown and Chilwell on Friday nights, late shopping.
