My mother and father (the late Judge J.A. Richardson) were members of the group. The Pickwick Club produced two issues of its “Proceedings”, issued under the title of “The Pickwick Portfolio”. The first issue was dated 1st October 1904, and the second was dated 1st January, 1912. I have no knowledge of any later issues. I have one copy of each of the publications referred to above and I should be pleased to present them to the historical Society, if they were felt to be suitable material. The issue of 1/1/1912 contains a list of members of the Club and this may be of interest to the older members of your Society. Yours Sincerely J.F. Richardsonpickwick club -- kew (vic.) -

Photograph, Painting of Thomas Carlyle Lothian by artist Ernest Buckmaster
Ernest Buckmaster (1897-1968) was born in Hawthorn. He was not a strong boy and was taken by his grandparents to help on their mixed farm at Box Hill until he was fourteen. He attended the local state school. In 1913 he was apprenticed to James Beament, a signwriter and amateur artist. After he was rejected for military service, Beament encouraged him to join the Victorian Artists Society and to enrol at the National Gallery Art School. On 24 August 1945 he was appointed an official war artist, commissioned to paint the Japanese surrender in Singapore. He completed twenty-five pictures for the Australian War Memorial. Lothian published his book 'The Art of Ernest Buckmaster' in 1951. REF: ADB entry. Photograph, Robert Gray, grandson of Robert Beckett
The pencil sketch from which this photo was taken had been hidden from view from 1919 - 1996 when it was located behind a framed photo retrieved from the Surrey Hills Bowling Club at the time of its closure. The sketch had been used as backing when photo framed in 1919. Jocelyn Hall gave the original to great nephew, [name TBC], who was a pharmacist at the Mont Albert tram terminus at the time. Initially the subject's identity was not known. A scribbled name 'Walduck' on a different photo finally resulted in the identification as John Robert Gray, who died 1917. He was engaged at the time of enlistment and after his death his fiancee did not marry. He attended Surrey Hills Primary School and was a salesman at the time of enlistment on 9 May 1916. He embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on 3 October 1916. His AIF papers list his mother as his next of kin, both resident in Suffolk Road, Surrey Hills. He was a gunner in the Howitzer Brigade 120. He was Killed in Action on 21 June 1917 and was buried at Bapaume Australian Cemetery (Row C, Grave NO. 5), France. It is believed that the sketch was made prior to him going overseas to France. John Robert Gray was the eldest son of Emma (nee Beckett) and John Gray. His father John Gray was "actively associated with all movements for the benefit of neighbours and fellow citizens". [Quote from the official tribute on his death in 1909.] He was very active in the Surrey Hills Progress Association in the early 1900's. The rotunda built in the Surrey Gardens by the Progress Association in 1912 was dedicated to him. He married Emma Beckett in 1888 at 'Guildford Villa' in Essex Road, the Beckett home. They are listed in both the 1903 and 1906 electoral rolls in Arundel Crescent; his occupation is given as bootmaker. The Alan Holt property register identifies this as 24 Arundel Crescent, known as 'Tumberumba'. John and Emma had a large family: (Gunner) John Robert Gray (1888, Surrey Hills - 21 June 1917, France) Benjamin Walter Gray (1890, Surrey Hills - 1949, Heidelberg) Herbert Harry Gray (1892, Surrey Hills - 1959, Queensland) William Beckett Gray (1897, Surrey Hills - 1899, Surrey Hills) Norman Douglas Gray (1901, Surrey Hills - 1947, Sydney) Evelyn Lizzie Gray (1906, Surrey Hills - 1983) Evelyn married Reginald Roberts and donated a number of photos to the collection. Both the Beckett and the Gray families were important in the early history of Surrey Hills. This is the only known image of John Robert Gray in WW1 uniform.A black and white photo of a hand-drawn image of a young man in uniform.world war, 1914-1918, (mrs) emma gray, (miss) emma beckett, (mr) john gray, walduck family, (mr) john robert gray, (mr) robert gray, world war, 1914-1919, surrey hills bowling club, bapaume australian cemetery, france -
Parks Victoria - Wilsons Promontory Lightstation... of the clockwork mechanism manufactured by Chance Brothers in c.1912. Brass ...It has been suggested that it is possibly part of the clockwork mechanism of the third order Fresnel lens, which was a component of the Chance Brothers lens system introduced to the lighthouse when the optics were upgraded in 1913, and subsequently removed in 1975. Further research may confirm its association with the lens and increase its heritage importance. The well-made brass fitting has second level significance as a possible former component of the clockwork mechanism manufactured by Chance Brothers in c.1912.Brass, round, knurled fitting. One end of the fitting has a cylindrical knob end with a smooth surface; the other has a broader cylindrical knob with a knurled surface to allow for gripping and turning.

Photograph, Bacchus Marsh Football Club Premiers, 1912
This photo is one of the oldest known photographic records of an Australian Rules football team in the Bacchus Marsh area. Australian Rules football was played in this area as early as the 1870s. An organized competition to play regular matches was formed in the early years of the twentieth century. This photo records the premiership winning team of 1912 in the match played against Melton. The match was reported in the Bacchus Marsh Express of 31 August 1912. The names of the players are not recorded on this photo, but the Express records the names of Marsh, Fairbank, Northcott, Palmer, Roy Simpson, Morris, Tom Grant, Jack Taylor, Bert Jones, Portingale (c.), Densley Bros., Wittick, Harry Grant, Leonard, Odgers, Bodycote. This item has historic and social significance as an image of one of the early sporting teams of Bacchus Marsh and district. It is a typical example of team photographs of this era. It is evidence of the transition of football from a social informal setting to an organised activity and signals the growth of importance of sport, in this case Australian Rules football, as a cultural and social activity central to the Australian ethos.A sepia photograph print mounted on mounting board, showing a group of 27 men arranged in three rows in front of a banner reading PREMIERS 1912 BMFC. Eighteen men are in football guernseys, nine in civilian clothes, three of whom are carrying towels over their shoulders. One player, very likely the captain, is holding a football. The photo is taken in an outdoor setting. On the reverse in pencil: 'Middle row - 5th from left JOHN WITTICK.'bacchus marsh football club, australian rules football -

This photo is probably the oldest known photographic record of the Balliang Football Club, an Australian Rules football team in the Bacchus Marsh area. Australian Rules football was played in this area as early as the 1870s. An organized competition to play regular matches was formed in the early years of the twentieth century. This item has historic and social significance as an image of one of the early sporting teams of Bacchus Marsh and district. It is a typical example of team photographs of this era. It is evidence of the transition of football from a social informal setting to an organised activity and signals the growth of importance of sport, in this case Australian Rules football, as a cultural and social activity central to the Australian ethos.A sepia photograph print mounted on mounting board, showing a group of 20 men arranged in two rows with two men reclining in front. Fifteen men are wearing horizontally striped football guernseys, one wearing a guernsey which is vertically striped. Two men wear white guernseys with a diagonal sash, one man in the back row is dressed formally in suit, collar and tie. One man, identified as the umpire, is in a white polo-necked sweater and is holding a football. The photo is taken in a clearing in an outdoor setting. It is possible to see the figures of three women in the background, two looking on from under a tree, one walking along a footpath.Above the photo in red ink:"Balliang Football Team 1912." Beneath the photo in red ink with one alteration in blue ink the names: "J.Davie, C. Bissell, F. Dodemaide (these two names showing a reversal of position), J.Turnbull, G.Dodemaide, A. Phalp, A.
