This is an empty box but the cover tells us that it was a box used for dentist materials from William Davidson, the Warrnambool dentist. By 1915 Davidson had one of the most extensive dental practices in the Western District. He served in World War One and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and was mentioned in despatches. Holder, Match box holder, 1935
Matches and match boxes were common and essential household items in the 19th century and early to mid 20th century. Today matches are used only irregularly. This match box holder was an advertising tool for Roy Pearson who had a motor service station at 100 Kepler Street, Warrnambool in the 1930s. The business was called the Super Service Station and Pearson was the agent for Triumph and Citroen cars. He sold petrol and used cars and did car repairs. In 1937 the business was run by Chorlton and GrahamThis item is of considerable interest showing the type of advertising used in Warrnambool in 1935. Apart from its utilitarian use of holding a match box, it is an advertising tool containing a 1935 calendar and it also uses humour as its main appeal. The holder features a face which shows a happy man when held one way (“This man calls at Pearson’s Service Station for satisfaction’) and a grumpy man when it is turned around (‘This man wishes he did call’). This is a metal match box holder, painted blue with yellow printing and an image of a man’s face. It has a 1935 calendar. It is much rusted on the inside and a little blotched on the outside. ‘Roy H. Book, Tom Wallis Louis Becke, Early 20th century
This book, ‘Tom Wallis’ written by Louis Becke was awarded as a third prize to Bertie Wilson by the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School in 1910. Grasmere is a small settlement about 12 kilometres from Warrnambool and was settled in the 1840s by pastoralists prior to the founding of Warrnambool. The Grasmere Presbyterian Church and Sunday School were established in 1898 though services had been held prior to this date in an older church which was converted at that time to house the Sunday School. The Sunday School was burnt down in 1914 and later rebuilt. Mr Paton, the Sunday School teacher in 1910, was on the Board of Management of the church in 1911. This book is significant because it is a memento of the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School of 1910. Sunday School attendance was a strong feature of the religious, educational and social life of many children in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Sunday Schools still operate but have fewer children attending in relation to the numbers of Protestant churches adherents. This is a hard cover book of 320 pages plus several pages at the end detailing other books published by the Religious Tract Society. The cover is dark red with an illustration in black, red and grey colours of two sailors aboard a ship. The book was a prize given to Bertie Wilson from the Grasmere Presbyterian Sabbath School in 1910. There are several illustrations (black and white plates) inserted throughout the book. The inscription plate has both printed and handwritten material. The colours on the cover, particularly on the spine, are somewhat faded. Front Cover: ‘Tom Wallis, Louis Becke’. The celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Warrnambool included concerts, race meetings, church services and the erection of an anniversary tablet on Cannon Hill. Household, Union Jacks, 1950s
These Union Jack flags are believed to have been used in the celebrations in Warrnambool on the occasion in 1953 of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11 (oral tradition only). Warrnambool celebrated with street parades, shop decorations and displays, concerts, church services and dinners. It was customary at the time to use the British flag more than the Australian one. These flags are retained because of their possible connection to mid 20th century Warrnambool celebrations (1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11).These are seven Union Jack flags made of cloth with red, white and blue colouring. The flags are pasted on to thin circular-shaped wooden sticks. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. Rolf Crawley’s grandfather, father and uncle were also engineers and worked in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. Document, Grasmere Church Dispute, 1882
These papers contain cuttings newspaper articles from the Standard of 1882 and handwritten comments appended to these cuttings. They refer to a dispute in 1882 regarding the ownership of the church in Grasmere to which the Anglican Church was claiming ownership The author of the handwritten comments is unknown but the comments purport to be a more accurate account of events than what appears in the paper cuttings. Grasmere is a small settlement 10 kilometres north of Warrnambool. In the 1850s land in Grasmere was donated for educational purposes and a Government-subsidized school which was a Denominational School run by the Church of England was established in 1858. This school was closed when Government State Schools were established after 1872 and the Anglican Church dismantled the old school and built a church on the site in the late 1870s. This church was erected by public subscription and many of the subscribers apparently believed they were donating to a building that could be used by any local Protestant churchgoers. The church in 1882 was being used by the Presbyterian Church for its services. A public meeting was held in 1882 to try to resolve the dispute between the Anglican Church claim and the local residents’ claim that the site belonged to the local community. Apparently the dispute remained unresolved and the Grasmere Anglican Church continued to operate until the early 20th century. This document is of interest as it is associated with a dispute that took place in Grasmere in 1882 and gives some indication of the arguments that were presented at the time in favour of, or opposed to, the Anglican Church’s claim to the ownership of the church. It is a document of particular interest to the history of the Grasmere. This is a folder of eleven foolscap-size sheets of paper enclosed in a mottle-coloured cardboard cover. The front cover is creased and partly torn and the back cover is detached and is in two pieces. The pages have been stitched together with thread and contain paste-in newspaper cuttings and handwritten material in purple ink. Grasmere Anglican Church -
Port of Echuca
Photograph, Original photo c.1920
The iron bridge was completed in 1878 and was used by the Deniliquin and Moama Railway company for goods trains only - it was another year before passengers were included in the transport service. On 4 March 1879 citizens of Echuca and Moama stormed the bridge, opened the gates and declared it open for their use.At the turn of the century the railway line carried produce from southern New South Wales & the Riverina to Melbourne, with goods trains being a very important mode to transport. When the bridge was being constructed, six workmen were killed and another maimed when a pile on the Moama bank collapsed. After the storming of the bridge by local people in March 1879 it was declared open for use of local residents traveling between the towns of Echuca and Moama. The bridge was shared by rail, road and pedestrian traffic. An image of the iron bridge at Echuca, taken looking East from Victoria bank.Verso: "Iron bridge"murray river bridge , echuca, murray bridge, echuca, iron bridge, echuca -

Eltham Gateway, Sweet D Lites, 820 Main Road, Eltham. Former Burgoyne shop and Post Office, now home to San Antonio Barbershop. Once affectionately known as the Hilltop milk bar, or Burgoyne’s, this is one of the only three remaining early twentieth century village shops in Eltham and as the community’s first post office. In the 1920’s, the post office was run from a tiny 6 by 6 corrugated iron shed at the side of the store. Miss Hunniford, the post mistress, would give you your mail or take your letters to send, as there was no postal delivery service at that time. In an emergency, such as illness, you could send a telegraph for tuppence (around two cents) a word. Later, this was the site of the Eltham’s first telephone exchange.
