Set of two colour prints of ex Adelaide Birney No. 302 (former Bendigo tram 29) in Melbourne for the 1982 Australia Day Transport Pagent. Photograph of Bendigo Tram No 3 at the tram depot, with the destination of Depot. Tram in the ESCo Red and Cream colour scheme with the tram number on the side of the vehicle. The tram commenced life with the Hawthorn Tramway Trust as their No. 8. Became No. 114 when the MMTB took over, sold to the SEC in 1931 and became Bendigo No. 3. It was donated to the AETA in 1956 and subsequently rebuilt as HTT 8. The tram is on display at the Melbourne Tram Museum Hawthorn. See reference for further details. Tram originally built for The North Melbourne Electric Tramways and Lighting Co. (NMETL) in 1906 as a straight sill open cross bench tram. Photograph is of the tram body on an un-motored truck or wheel set and has been posed for an official MMTB photograph in 1925, soon after the workshops were completed. It shows the destination of "M River" for Maribyrnong River.Shows the only type of fully open cross bench tram operated by the MMTB. This style was popular as a summer tram in North America. Originally built by Brill (USA) in 1906 and assembled by Duncan and Fraser for the NMETL as Tram No. 14. Photograph shows a group of five cable tramway employees with a cart containing batteries to supply power for lights in Melbourne Cable trams. This lighting was introduced by the Tramway Board (TB), the forerunner to the MMTB during 1917. A motor generator at each car house or depot provided the power to charge the batteries which were then placed in each tram for the day. Reference - The Commonwealth Engineer 1/8/1917 - Reg Item 2568. The equipment was provided by the General Electric Company. The cart has the letters "TB CH" possibly indicating Clifton Hill Depot and the batteries are lettered "NE" and then given a number. Photo date unknown - 1917 to 1940. The photograph shows the demolition or removal of cable tram track in Swanston St Melbourne. The reference notes that work commenced 27/12/1925 and that conversion was completed by 24/1/1926. Given the worksite it would be most likely late December 1925. Note the large unsilenced air compressor, the large crowd of on-lookers and that Swanston St northbound seems to remain open for traffic. In the background are the Royal Hotel Arcade entrance and the Melbourne Town Hall. This photograph is Public Records Office photo H109 in the Victorian Railways collection. The workmen are excavating the former cable tram track The inbound cable tram track remains in position. The 1955 Annual Report notes that work commenced following the completion of the Queen's visit in March 1954 and that all work was done by day-labour. The track was opened to service in late June 1955. The second image is from a Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works plan (part) No. 1217 - Collingwood for the intersection, obtained for reference from the State Library of Victoria Collection of MMBW Plans. It shows the layout of the cables and the large sheave pit that the cable itself passed around. The trams were required to drop the cable from the grip prior to the entry to the curve and then coast around. Photo shows the workmen excavating and demolishing parts of the massive infrastructure needed at this curve to enable cable trams to pass around the sharp curve, still one of the sharpest on today's Melbourne tram system. The outside cable tram track remains in position. The MMBW plan shows a large cable sheave pit on the outside of the curve. The photograph shows the demolition or removal of the cable tram track at an un-identified location, showing the removal of the yokes and track where two cable lines crossed over each other. Shows the former cable tram yokes that supported the slot rails and some details of the cable tunnels and pits. The man in the bottom left could be cutting the yokes with an oxy-acetylene cutting torch. In the view are at the top of the photo some rails can be seen. There were a number of points where the cable tram crossed other electric or cable tram lines. Given the small work site and men involved the location could potentially be either Johnston Street and Smith Street or Johnston St and Nicholson Street. Tickets were produced to enable first-class travel from Middle Brighton Railways station to Sandringham and then by Electric Tramway from Sandringham Railway Station to the corner of Bluff Road and Royal Ave. The ticket colours indicated to station staff, Inspectors, and conductors the nature of the ticket and its availability These tickets were purchased by the donor in 1970 long after the tramway had closed and travel classes were abolished on the suburban railways. They were available for use on the replacement bus service.
