This is a brochure commemorating the arrival in Australia of John and Isabella McLeod and the unveiling of a plaque at the Immigrants Wall in Portland in 2015. The Immigrants Wall is located in Bentinck Street in Portland, Victoria and was a Glenelg Shire Bicentenary Project to enable descendants of those who first set foot on Australian soil at Portland to commemorate this event by placing a memorial plaque on the wall. John and Isabella McLeod were two of these immigrants to come to Portland in 1854. This is an advertising leaflet issued by the Warrnambool Woollen Mill Co. This mill was established in South Warrnambool in 1910 with John Bennett the first Manager. The mill’s production increased during both World Wars with government contracts and wartime demands. In the 1940s the mill employed over 700 people. In 1968 the mill was sold to the multinational company Dunlop which in turn sold the business in 1982 to Onkaparinga Woollen Mill. In 1983 Onkaparinga was taken over by Macquarie Worsteds and in 1994 this group pulled out of Warrnambool. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill closed in 2000 after 90 years of operation. This leaflet is of interest as an example of the advertising mechanisms produced by the Warrnambool Woollen Mill when it was a locally run large-scale business in the city. The business was a dominant one in Warrnambool for many decades, employing many local people. The factory itself was a well-known landmark in the city. This is a sheet of buff-coloured thick paper folded in two places to make a six-page leaflet. The front page has an aerial black and white photograph of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill, two of the inside pages have 12 black and white photographs showing the processes in making woollen blankets and two other pages have advertisements for Warrnambool blankets and dress suiting material. Inside the folder is a sample piece of pink blanket with a card in red and cream colouring showing the factory’s guarantee. The sample has been glued to the paper. These essays have been written by Walter Murdoch, a distinguished Australian academic and essayist. Murdoch (1874-1970) gained an Arts Degree at the University of Melbourne, with first class honours in philosophy and logic. In 1901 he came to Warrnambool, going into partnership with James Scott as proprietors of a private school, Warrnambool College. They bought out Warrnambool Grammar School, previously run by John Stanley. When Scott retired Murdoch became the sole proprietor and headmaster. While in Warrnambool Murdoch continued to write for Melbourne newspapers and published a book, ‘The Struggle for Freedom’ which covers English and Australian constitutional history. This book sold 10,000 copies in its first year. In 1904 Murdoch left Warrnambool to take up a lecturing position in English at the University of Melbourne. He went on to become the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia and later its Chancellor. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him. Murdoch became a household name in Australia through his radio broadcasts and syndicated articles and literary columns in several Australian newspapers. During his lifetime Murdoch published over 40 works and he was knighted in 1964. This book is of interest as one written by Walter Murdoch who not only is important in Australian literature and academic circles but also has his place in Warrnambool’s history. This book belonged to Pearl McCullagh whose address is given as Oak Grove (the name of the property) inYangery with the name of Illowa S. School under the address. Because of the content of the book it is presumed that the ‘S’ stands for Sabbath or Sunday and the Sunday School may have been a Presbyterian one. Yangery is situated between Woodford and Koroit and Illowa, nearby, is about 8 kilometres from Koroit and about 9 kilometres from Warrnambool. Pearl McCullagh was the daughter of Samuel James and Charlotte Jane McCullagh. She was born in 1906 and married Ernest Keen. This book is of interest because it belonged to an early 20th century resident, Pearl McCullagh who lived at Oak Grove in Yangery. This is a soft cover book of 104 pages. The cover is brown with black lettering on the front cover. The cover is crumpled and worn away in places and the pages are dog-eared. This book contains selections of the convict stories written by Price Warung, 1864-1911(real name William Astley). He was a journalist and writer who worked for a great number of newspapers throughout Australia and began an important association with the Sydney ‘Bulletin’ in 1890. In this period he write the powerful works for which he is best known, ‘Convict Days’, a series of four volumes of stories about Australia’s convict system. The major theme of these writings is the sordid nature of the convict system. Astley became heavily involved in the Federation campaign, firstly as the Secretary of the Bathurst Federal League and then as the organizing Secretary of the 1896 Bathurst Convention. This Convention is considered by historians to have given the Federation campaign a new and vigorous vitality. In 1898 Astley wrote most of the official articles publishing the ‘Yes’ case for the Federation referendum. In 1883 Astley was in Warrnambool, working as a journalist for the Warrnambool Standard newspaper and examples of his journalism can be found in the papers of this time. He wrote lengthy reports in a free-flowing and attractive but verbose style. His two articles on the well-known horse stud and hop farm called ‘Bryan O’Lynn’ appeared in the Standard in October 1884. This book is of considerable interest as it was written by Price Warung (William Astley). Not only is he of importance in Australia’ history but also he has his place in Warrnambool’s history as a journalist for the Warrnambool Standard in the 1880s. This is a poster advertising the sale of the Lyndoch sub-division in Warrnambool with the sale of 200 housing sites. The sale took place about 1958 with the land sold by Frederick Gill, a Warrnambool jeweller. The land was previously owned by George Rolfe who had acquired the land near the mouth of the Hopkins River in the 1880s and named the property ‘Lyndoch’. He bought the surrounding land at a later time. This sub-division came to be known as the Gill Estate. It was a valuable site as many of the allotments fronted the sea and others were adjacent to the Hopkins River. This poster, although tattered, is of interest as it has many details of the Gill Estate sub-division and will be useful to researchers. This candle holder would probably be mostly used for a candle placed on a table, cupboard or bench. It is unornamented and so would not occupy any place of importance. Candles and lamps were the chief source of light in households until the advent and use of electricity in the early 20th century. Gas lighting was in use in street lighting and in industry for some time before this. Electric lighting for households became available in Warrnambool in the 1920s but the use of lamps and candles was still prevalent until the middle of the 20th century. This is a souvenir vase produced for the tourist trade in Warrnambool. The vase was made by Victoria China in Czechoslovakia and the image of the Warrnambool War Memorial has been added for sale in Warrnambool. Similar items with suitable illustrations would have been produced for the tourist industry for other towns and places in Australia. Tourism has been an important industry in Warrnambool since the late 19th century. This vase is of interest as an example of the souvenirs available to tourists in Warrnambool in the 1930s. It is both a decorative and a useful item. This is a white china vase with an elliptical-shaped body and a circular neck with a wider opening at the top. There is a faint brown-gold colouring on the neck of the vase and this colouring is stronger on the under-side of the top opening, There is a colour illustration of the War Memorial at Warrnambool on the side of the vase. This plate was probably part of a crockery set used by the Warrnambool Congregational Church for church functions and receptions. The Warrnambool Congregational Church began when two men, Robert Winton and Thomas Nayler, met in 1862 to discuss the possibility of establishing a church of the Independent order. As a result the first Congregational Church was opened in Liebig Street, Warrnambool in 1864 with William Pentland as the first Minister. Samuel Nettleton was a notable member of the congregation, being the Superintendent of the Sunday School for 60 years. In 1940 the Congregational Church moved to a building in Henna Street and in 1973 the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church to form what is known today as the Uniting Church. In 1976 the former Congregational Church building in Henna Street was sold to the Salvation Army. This plate is of interest as a memento of the Warrnambool Congregational Church, an institution that no longer exists under that name. This is a cream-coloured china plate with a gold trim around the outer edges and the name of the church in the centre in a black and white scroll pattern. The gold trim is now almost obliterated. These two plans are copies and show drawings for a proposed turntable at the Warrnambool Railway Station and railway crossings at Gilles Street in the Liebig Street precinct. The Warrnambool Railway was opened in 1890 and the Warrnambool Railway Station building was erected a few years later. These plans, being copies, are of minor interest as they show plans of some projects in the Warrnambool Railway Station precinct in the latter half of the 20th century.These are two sheets of cream-coloured paper with plans (copies of original) drawn up in black ink. Clare Roper maintained and collected historical articles from the local newspapers especially those pertaining to the local area and of interest to the Kiewa Valley.Clare Roper grew up and lived in the Kiewa Valley at Tawonga. She was a member of the Kiewa Valley Historical Society for many years.Black with thin alternating red and white strips from top to bottom 'Photo Album' used to attach newspaper clippings dated from the 1950s to the 1990s. The articles are of historical interest and include many from the Kiewa Valley. The Album has 3 metal rings which snap open and shut. There are approximately 60 pages each with a clear plastic sheet that opens up to allow insertion of the newspaper article. William Rutledge [born 1806, Ireland] was a self-made, larger-than-life man who involved himself prominently in business, municipal, political, community and social aspects of life. Eldest son of James and Martha [nee Forster], William arrived in Australia from Ireland in 1829 and within six years had sufficiently established himself to purchase land in New South Wales. He married Eliza Kirk in Sydney in august 1840. They had two sons and five daughters. In 1843 he began his association and life in Port Fairy and soon became prominent and influential in almost all aspects of that developing town. His interests encompassed mercantile, civic, pastoral, shipping, importing, exporting, immigration, politics and social aspects with in the district and colony. He was a major contributor to the building of St John’s Anglican Church, Port Fairy. He acquired three special surveys with historical importance in Victoria. In south west Victoria that interest being especially the Farnham Survey of 5120 acres between Dennington and Tower Hill/Killarney. This was farmed by immigrant tenant and lessee farmers, some of whom were brought to the Australia at William Rutledge’s own expense and by whom he was considered a kind and considerate landlord. His endeavours were not without failures and in 1862 his Port Fairy Company failed with debts of over £170,000. This debt was redeemed in full within a year. According to reported accounts, William Rutledge had a tempestuous manner with an “explosive” temper, although he did not hold grudges. This is countered by accounts of his kindness, generosity, honesty and practical, progressive outlook in all his undertakings. After the failure and closure of his Company, William Rutledge moved to his property at Farnham Park near Warrnambool where he concentrated his interest in breeding sheep and horses. Throughout his life his home was reputed to be convivial and hospitable. William Rutledge died at Farnham Park on June 1st, 1876. This Holiday Guide was produced by the Warrnambool Standard with several articles contributed to the supplement by Sally Clark, the Warrnambool Tourist Promotion Officer. Holiday Guides were produced each year to assist and promote tourism in the area. The fact that Warrnambool had won the Premier Town Award for the years 1979-1982 was an added reason for tourists to come to the region and this fact was used as an advertising tool. Warrnambool won the Premier Town Award in 1988 for the third time. This Holiday Guide is of some interest as it shows what was considered the best places for tourists to visit in the Warrnambool region in 1980. The advertisements are also of some value for recording the business life of the city in 1980. This folder came from the photographic studio of Alex Wilkins. For over 35 years in the 20th century he was one of the best-known commercial photographers in Warrnambool. In 1938 he purchased the building known as Jordan Studios (94 Liebig Street) and worked there until the 1960s. In the 1940s he became interested in producing movie films documenting local news and scenes. The name ‘McKinney’ on this folder indicates that the contents belonged to someone in the Warrnambool area as William McKinney had a general store in Lava Street in the 1870s and 80s and there are still McKinney residents in Warrnambool today. This folder is of some interest as it comes from the studio of Alex Wilkins, one of Warrnambool’s most important photographers in the 20th century. This is buff-coloured paper folded in three places to make a folder with sleeves at each end to insert photographs or photograph negatives. The folder is stitched with cotton at the top and the bottom and some of the stitching is coming undone. The inside sleeves have black printed advertising material on them and the front cover has a red and black image of two little girls. This is a program for the Order of Service for the Induction of the Rev Rhys Miller to St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool in 1946. St. John’s Church was officially opened in 1875, burnt down in 1920 and rebuilt around the skeleton structure remaining on the same site. The Rev. Rhys Miller had been a R.A.A.F. Chaplain during World War Two before coming to Warrnambool in 1946. He was absent from Warrnambool for most of that first year undertaking post-graduate studies in Scotland. The Rev. Miller was the Minister at St. John’s Church until 1952 when he transferred to a Gardenvale church in Melbourne. The centenary of Presbyterianism in Warrnambool took place in 1949 and Rev. Miller wrote the booklet, ‘100 Years of Worship and Work’. In 1984 he published his autobiography, ‘Calling and Recalling’. This program is of interest because the Rev. This book is a technical book that was originally from the Wendouree Woollen Mills but latterly was part of a collection of books owned by the Warrnambool Woollen Mill. The Wendouree Woollen Mills in Ballarat began in 1870 as a flour mill and became the Doveton Woollen Mill in 1877. In 1918 it became the Myer Woollen Mill (Myer Emporium ownership) and in the 1920s it was a knitting mill. After Myer sold the mill it was known as Wendouree Woollen Mill but it closed in 1975. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill in Harris Street, Warrnambool was established in 1910 on the site of an earlier woollen mill destroyed by fire in 1882. It was a successful business for many years and closed in 2000 after 90 years of operations but by that time it had been bought by successive companies including the multinational company Dunlop. In 1968 the Warrnambool Woollen Mills (Dunlop era) purchased Wendouree Woollen Mills and transferred much of its operations to Warrnambool until the Ballarat mill was closed in 1975. This explains why a Wendouree Woollen Mill book was in the Warrnambool Woollen Mill building when it closed. This book is of some interest as a good example of technical books produced in the early 1920s. It would have been well-used by woollen mills workers and foremen at the time. It is also of interest as it comes from the Warrnambool Woollen Mill and so it is a memento of a most important and influential business in Warrnambool in the 20th century. A great number of local people were employed at this mill over the years and it enjoyed for many years a national reputation for quality products. This is a hard cover book with a dark blue cover and gold lettering on the front cover and the spine. The title of the book is printed in an ornate script and is underlined with two gold lines. The book has 277 pages commencing with page 273 as the book is Volume Two of this title. The book, about wool combing was written by Fred Bradbury. It has a Preface, a Contents page and fifteen chapters commencing with Chapter 21 and ending with Chapter 35, an Index and several pages of advertisements for other technical books. The book has several black and white photographs of machinery and illustrations and sketches demonstrating mechanical and technical processes. These verses are handwritten and this suggests they originated locally but they were published in a Melbourne paper in 1874 and the writer is unknown.The verses refer to the cricket match in Warrnambool in January 1874 when a team of 22 players representing the Western District played the touring All-England Eleven captained by William Gilbert Grace, the famous English cricketer. The match in Warrnambool, one of 15 matches played in Australia, was won easily by the English team after one and a half days in a scheduled three day match but W.G.Grace did not star, making only 18 runs in the first innings and not required to bat in the second innings. Frank Allan of Allansford,who played for Victoria and Australia and was later called 'the bowler of the century.' took 6 for 28 in the first innings. Grace made a bad impression in Warrnambool with his brusque and insolent tone, refusing to attend the local Ball put on for the English team because the 'professional' players would be in attendance. The poem echoes the lack of goodwill and condescension shown in Warrnambool by Grace and refers to 'the greatest bat in all the world' making only 18 and sends a message to the English team - 'Don't quarrel and don't blow!'This poem is of considerable interest because it shows the ill-feeling in Warrnambool engendered by the attitude taken by W.G.Grace when his English Eleven was playing in Warrnambool in January in 1874. It is a reminder also of one of the 19th century highlights in Warrnambool's sporting history.These are two sheets of blue paper with 15 stanzas of poetry in black handwriting. This is a framed photograph of a large group of people at a wedding reception in April 1910. The occasion was the marriage of Mary Lee of Wangoom and Patrick O'Keefe, also of Wangoom. The wedding took place at St. Joseph's Church, Warrnambool and the reception was held at the property of St. Mary's at Wangoom which had been held by the Lee family since the late 1850s.Two marquees were erected to cater for over 400 guests and the hospitality included midday dinner, afternoon tea, high tea and supper. The Temperance Band provided the afternoon music. This photograph is of considerable interest, firstly because it depicts a Warrnambool/Wangoom 1910 wedding and secondly because it is an unusual photograph for the time, showing a very large group (perhaps over 400).This is a black and white photograph in a brown wooden patterned frame. These items come from the house "BIRCHWOOD" in Koroit Street, Warrnambool belonging to Dr. Angus and family. Dr. William Roy Angus (1901-1970) practised in Warrnambool from 1939 to 1970. In his later years Dr. Angus was an important ophthalmologist. He was prominent in Warrnambool in both medical and community affairs. The Angus home "BIRCHWOOD" at 214 Koroit Street (the site of the Warrnambool Police station today) was noted for its beautiful garden, lawns and croquet court and used as a meeting place and entertainment centre for vice-regal personnel and community organisations.These items are of considerable interest as they are connected to a well known doctor in Warrnambool and a notable house..1,.2,.3 These are three wooden door plates with a fine ridged front and a curved top and base. They have four holes to be used with nails to attach to the door. .4, .5 These are two wooden key hole covers with half spherical shapes at the top, ridging and carving towards a tapered base. .4 has a brass circular plate at the back with two small decorations protruding at the top. This stencil has been made to label packaged produce (wool bales, packaged meat etc) from a farm in Grasmere, near Warrnambool. The name, W. Robinson, suggests that this is William Robinson the son of James and Jane Robinson. James Robinson came to Australia in 1857 and he and his family farmed at Springvale at Hopkins Point, then at what was termed 'Manning's old Purnim Farm' on the Merri Rive at Grasmere (the Manning brothers, Frederick and John were early farmers in the district). The Robinson brothers, James and Stuart were well-known in the Warrnambool district as champion ploughmen. James's son, William married firstly Christina MacLennan and then Elizabeth Neale of Tooram, Allansford. William died in 1959 but the stencil was probably used on the property after his death. This farm stencil is of interest as a memento of farming at Grasmere in the first half of the 20th century.This is a metal stencil, oval in shape. This piece of cloth came from the Fletcher Jones factory in Warrnambool. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) served in the First World War and in the 1920s set up as a travelling hawker selling drapery in the Western District of Victoria. In 1924 he leased three shops in Liebig Street, Warrnambool and in 1928 he moved to the Koroit/Liebig Streets intersection with his Man’s Shop. He manufactured men’s clothing on site. In 1931 he moved the business into a new two-storeyed building on the site. He opened a Fletcher Jones shop in Melbourne in 1946 and in 1948 a factory was established in Warrnambool. In 1951 the business of Fletcher Jones and Staff was established. The company expanded and became known Australia- wide, firstly for the production of men’s trousers and later both men’s and women’s clothing. By 2011 the Warrnambool factory was sold and the company was dissolved. This piece of material is of interest as an example of the cloth used in the Fletcher Jones factory in Warrnambool. This is a 1968 newsletter of the City of Warrnambool Theatre Group. It gives information on the forthcoming Summer School of Drama held in Melbourne, the group’s Dinner Dance, a play reading of the play, ‘J.B.’ and the group’s next production, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. The secretary of the group at the time was Ian Hill. Warrnambool has had a great number of community drama societies and groups since the 1860s and the City of Warrnambool Theatre Group has been putting on local stage productions since 1948. Two prominent members of the group were Cyril and Joyce Hayward. Today the group is called the Warrnambool Theatre Company. This newsletter is of interest as an example of an early newsletter from a prominent and important amateur theatre group in Warrnambool. These are two sheets of foolscap paper folded in three places for postage purposes. One page has the postal address of the recipient, two pages have black typing and one page is blank. The front page with the address has a red stamp and postal franking. Originally the two sheets were stapled together but the staples have been removed. The pages have yellowed with age.‘Mrs D. This is a souvenir of a ‘Back To’ celebration in Warrnambool in 1934. There had been a large-scale ‘Back To’ in Warrnambool in 1930, perhaps prompted by the growing interest in the history of the town ( this was evidenced in many country towns in Victoria at the time) and the need to gather together the remaining older local people as those regarded as pioneers of the district were fast dying out. In 1934 the State of Victoria was celebrating the centenary of the first permanent white settlement at Portland and many other places besides Melbourne took this opportunity to have a reunion of past and present citizens. Also Warrnambool had at the time two men very interested in the history of the settlement – Henri Worland and Patrick O’Grady and the first Warrnambool Historical Society was established the following year with Worland and O’Grady prominent in its establishment and Martin Carter on the first committee as well. Martin Carter, whose name appears on this envelope was the organizer of the 1934 reunion. The Carter family had long been established in Warrnambool as saddlers and Martin Carter was a Warrnambool Councillor from 1917 to 1925 and Mayor during three of those years. No information is available on the ‘Miss Adams ‘ in the address but ‘ R. F. Kennedy & Co.’ refers to the well-known pharmacy business in Timor Street Warrnambool.This envelope is of interest as a souvenir of a ‘Back To’ in Warrnambool in 1934. This is a small envelope with most of the back flap missing. The inside of the envelope has a blue lining. The envelope has a franked green Australian stamp and a Warrnambool Post Office stamp. A handwritten address is on the right side of the envelope. On the left side is a printed poster/advertisement in blue, black and grey colouring.
