Digital photograph, Life jackets on lawn square outside Westminster Abbey, 2016, Monday 19 September 2016
Thousands of life jackets have been laid out on the grass in Parliament Square in London, as world leaders meet at the United Nations in New York to discuss the refugee crisis. The 2,500 jackets used in the one-day "life jacket graveyard" installation were all worn by those who tried to make the crossing from Turkey to the Greek island of Chios. More than 600 of the life jackets on display were used by children, but most of them are pretty useless. A lot of the life jackets provided by people smugglers are virtually fake, and actually soak up water instead — several of those displayed were sliced open. life jackets, refugees, installation -

Memorabilia - Takasago Dolls
Good luck dolls usually given to engaged couples but occasionally give to Japanese soldiers prior to deploying.Takasago dolls or, in English, Darby and Joan dolls. They are a set, the brighter one being an old lady, the other an old man. They were used as engagement presents, but during the war, they were sometimes (actually maybe rarely) given to soldiers as good luck charms, or ‘mamori’. They were said to be lucky as they contained the stitching (sewing) of 1000 ladies, ‘senninbari’ (a thousand ‘peoples’ needles). So mate, the original theory is probably correct. The soldier would have wrapped these dolls in water proof paper (made using persimmon tannin or kakishiba). He would have kept them around his waist in a waist band, called an obi or perhaps a ‘haramaki’ (a knitted stomach band).Anyway the dollls should remain together. I’m wondering if there are any messages inside? But if they are completely stitched closed, then they should remain that way. The Takasago dolls originated in Takasago City in Hyogo Prefecture, hence the name. But later they were made everywherejapan, ww2, world war 2, world war two, takasago dolls -

Book, We Remember 1914 - 1918
To commemorate the Centenary of the Great War of 1914-1918, a number of Society Members decided to compile a list of all those who served (in the various conflicts) and were either born, worked or lived in the Ballan Shire at the time. It was noted that the existing Cenotaph outside the Ballan Post Office was not entirely accurate as some names were missing and others were not from the area, thus there was a need to correct the record. Thousands of hours of research resulted in as complete a list as possible of 810 names and the printing of this book. Two copies (each of three volumes) were printed. One is held by the Ballan RSS&AILA, the other is in the archives of this Society, and both are available for research purposes.Three substantial A4 size bound books with red leatherette covers. We Remember 1914-1918 Vol.*ballan shire, ww1 servicemen -

On Saturday 29 August 1908, over 100 years ago, 16 American battleships along with 5 various escorts entered Port Phillips Bay. Thousands flocked with excitement along the coast and to Port Melbourne to see the white painted ships and their sailors disembarked. The Fleet’s Mission, ordered by President Theodore Roosevelt, was to make friendly courtesy visits to countries while obviously displaying new U.S. naval power. Invited by Alfred Deakin to the young federation, who was feeling isolated and vulnerable after the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, the visit was a first step in the shaping of the relationship between the US and Australia. And also an impetus to create the Australian Navy in 1911.A photograph of an original photograph depicting the Queenscliff fishing fleet out welcoming the incoming American fleet on Saturday 29 August 1908.Queenscliff fishing boats welcoming the American Fleetthe americcan fleet, the great white fleet, theodore roosevelt, alfred duncan, australian navy 1911 -

Brothers Davis and Lowell Chamberlain, along with their sister Izanna, established what became known as the Chamberlain Medicine Company in 1873. The Des Moines, Iowa-based company eventually stretched to Australia, Canada and South Africa. Chamberlains Colic and Diarrhea Remedy used alcohol, ether, and chloroform to soothe upset stomachs. The company also sold a cough remedy, liniment, pain relief balm and lotion. Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhea Remedy was one of many thousands of patent medicines that made incredible, and often false, claims about their effectiveness, and became tremendously profitable. Eventually government regulations were put in place to prevent medicine manufacturers from making unfounded claims about their products. This item is an example of a typical "over the counter" patented medicine commonly used by families. The photograph depicts eleven vignettes relating to the murders of Captain Lee Weller, Charles Burgess and Arthur Preston by Frank Butler (born Richard Ashe, alias Frank Harwood). Some historians consider Butler to be Australia's first serial killer. Butler submitted written advertisements to the classified columns of the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper looking for people to join him in prospecting for gold. Butler took his victims into the Blue Mountains in New South Wales and told fabricated stories of gold mines worth thousands of pounds. He then made his victims dig their own graves under the guise that they were digging for gold. He would then shoot them, take their valuables, and bury them.Sepia rectangular photograph printed on matte photographic paper mounted on card.Obverse: 1897 / Butler's inseparable Friend / Cap ' Lee Weller / The Victim Burgess / A OT Preston / Frank Harwood / alias / Butler / J. Public Art Work, Jason Waterhouse, 'Cottage' - Jason Waterhouse. 2015, 2014 - 15
The iconic bush surrounds of Lake Daylesford are now home to a new permanent artwork titled Cottage, by artist Jason Waterhouse. The artwork has been months in the making, thousands of S-shaped pieces have been hand crafted from three kilometres of wrought iron, then joined together to form a scaled-down miners cottage. ‘Cottage’ is a highly decorative wrought iron sculpture inspired by the gates at the Convent in Daylesford, “ said Waterhouse. “This work references the rich opulence of the Victorian gold rush and pre-war spa resort era in its patterning. In its form ‘cottage’ pays homage to the miners, workers and farmers on whose backs the riches of Daylesford were built.” Cottage is the first in a series of significant public artworks to be commissioned by Hepburn Shire Council. Cottage will enhance one of Victoria’s premier tourist destinations, Lake Daylesford. In telecommunication, a commercial code is a code once used to save on cablegram costs.[1] Telegraph (and telex) charged per word sent, so companies which sent large volumes of telegrams developed codes to save money on tolls. Elaborate commercial codes which encoded complete phrases into single words were developed and published as codebooks of thousands of phrases and sentences with corresponding codewords. Commercial codes were not generally intended to keep telegrams private, as codes were widely published; they were usually cost-saving measures only. This file includes correspondence between CAC, United Aircraft Corporation and North American Aviation reticence to manufacture the Pratt and Whitney Wasp engine. -

Domestic object - Kerosene Lantern
During the Victorian goldrushes of the 1850s thousands of Chinese migrants arrived to seek their fortunes. At that time many came to the lucrative gold fields of Northeast Victoria. After the Gold rush, many Chinese migrants returned home. However, a number settled in the area as merchants, hawkers and market gardeners in surrounding towns including Wodonga, the Ovens, King, Buffalo River and Kiewa Valleys. They also rented lands and established themselves in the hops and tobacco farming industries. Items of Chinese origin made their way into many households. Importation of Chinese mass produced items such as this lantern continued well into the 20th century and were common domestic items across Australia before households were connected to electricity. This item is representation of kerosene / paraffin lamps used throughout Australia to provide lighting inside and outdoors prior to the widespread availability of electricity.A small hurricane lamp with a rounded tank and small carry handle attached to the top. A larger handle is also attached at the top of the frame. It has a lever to open the glass tank. It has a metal base which is filled with kerosene. Print - Print, framed, William Howard Jarvis (1903-1964), Orient Line S.S. Orsova off San Francisco, 1954-1966
British painter Howard Jarvis was best known for his maritime landscape paintings. An early member of the Society of Marine Artists (UK), formed in 1939, he went to sea on merchant ships and served in the Royal Navy during World War II. His works were influenced by marine artist Kenneth Shoesmith. Jarvis was commissioned by the Cunard-White Star Cruises to create a stone litho poster, which was quite well known, giving passengers a birds-eye view of a cruise ship.SS Orsova, built in 1954, was a British ocean liner for the Orient Steam Navigation Company until 1960, then P&O Orient Lines between 1960-1966, although the Orient ships retained their corn-coloured hulls and sailed under their own house flag. The colour of the hull on the print indicates it was made between 1954 and 1966. On 24 May 1956, Orsova ran aground off Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne, for twelve hours. In 1966 P&O acquired the balance of the Orient Line shares and all their ships were painted white. In the 1960s, Orsova carried many thousands of emigrants from Greece and Italy to Australia. It was staffed by approximately 600 crew and carried over a 1000 passengers. For the young, eager and patriotic men who enlisted in their thousands to fight for King and Country, it was to be a marvellous adventure - an opportunity to march to Glory with the battalions of 'pals' and 'chums'. Nothing could have prepared them for the nightmare that beckoned. This video explains what it meant to live and fight on the Western front, from the innocent patriotism of 'Kitchener's Army' to the war weary anger of the war poets. The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, Saunders, Unknown
The photograph depicts the two-storey building of the Bank of Victoria which was built in 1858 and was replaced in 1867 after a fire destroyed the original building. The branch had originally opened under John Farran in 1856 before the office building was erected in Beechworth. The building was located on the corner of Ford and Camp streets and embodied the dignified appearance of Beechworth during the mid-1800s due to the building's features. The Bank of Victoria was designed by "Smith and Watts" and built from white brick and render, which cost three thousand and seven hundred pounds to construct. The building was inspired by a formal Italian villa, including square-headed windows, cornices, and a parapet. The ground floor consisted of banking chambers, a strong room, and servants' quarters. The residential quarters were located on the second floor. The photograph is significant as it depicts not only depicts a building of importance to the town of Beechworth but it also shows aesthetic significance due to the style it was built in. As the Bank of Victoria was constructed in the classic Italian style, it exemplifies the classic quality and refined manner of this architectural style. This building style represents the image Beechworth held for itself at that time, which was a sophisticated and distinguished town.Black and white rectangular photograph printed on paper.Reverse: 23/80 / Beechworth / (Indecipherable) / Banking to (Indecipherable) / Sydney / “Bank of Victoria” / BMM 8692.1 / [Stamped: ILFORD]bank of victoria, beechworth, banks, beechworth bank, 1858, 1867, ford street, camp street, victoria, john farran, smith and watts, italian architecture, italian style building, brick building, brick, banking, money, fire, building destroyed
