The oldest child of Susan and William Garnsworthy Bennett, Elizabeth Bennett was noted for her involvement in community and church activities. She was organist at St Paul's Church of England for many years. Elizabeth Bennett married William Todd (the younger, son of William Todd Snr and his wife Sarah, née Thompson) on New Year's Day in 1882, and they celebrated their Golden Wedding in 1932. Their depot was on the corner of Main Rd and Snodgrass St, Pakenham. When Bill's younger sons Ken and Ron, acquired the business in 1994 the business was renamed Hermon's Rainbow Removals, which remains in operation today. 1. These pieces of Kelly Gang armour (including pieces manufactured by police) were photographed outside Beechworth Court House during committal proceedings in 1880. Ned Kelly, born in June 1855, was one of the last Australian bushrangers. An outlaw, gang leader and convicted police killer, Ned Kelly's distinctive armour has become entrenched in Australian lore. Ned's younger brother Dan Kelly (born in 1861), wore similar armour to his older brother. Imitation fur products were initially popular due to their relative cheapness. As the 1960s progressed, faux fur became more popular due to social uneasiness about the wildlife and farmed fur trade. Whereas real fur hats might be seen as matronly, smart, light and bright, clearly fake fur hats were designed for a younger market, and proved more suitable to the light weight fabrics of dresses and coats that became fashionable in Australia in the 1950s.The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. The ‘Cubs’ was for younger boys and they wore a cap (whereas the older ‘Scouts’ wore a hat). The Disraeli Street Scout Hall was built in 1927 and remained the home of the Scout Group up until 1991. The Group now meets in a purpose-built Scout Hall (built 1993) at the corner of Willsmere Road and Kellett Grove, Kew. George and Anne Evans settled in Sunbury in 1836 after migrating to Van Diemens Land from Plymouth in 1825. He took upland along the Jacksons Creek and built his Emu Bottom Homestead. He married Anne, who was forty years younger than him on 11 May 1843 and they had six children. He and his wife Anne are buried in Melbourne General Cemetery in Compartment 'H'.George died on 26 August 1876 and Anne died on 12 January 1893. George Evans was a one of the first Europeans to take up land in the the area that was originally known as Buttlejork ( Batterjork) in the area now known as Sunbury. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The Programme Committee was responsible for organising the speakers. This was a letter detailing discussions by the Board about future speakers and sent from the Legacy President to the Chairman of the Programme Committee. Of note there was an interest in younger speakers if they could be 'responsible types'. Also that the concept of inviting women to speak was not agreed upon 'at this time' - read para 3.A record that the speakers at Legacy functions were from very different walks of life and the subects spoken on were many and varied. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia. James Reid was born in Scotland near Glasgow and came to Victoria as a young man in 1854. Shortly after arriving he came to Bacchus Marsh where he lived until his death in 1902 at the age of 74 years. For most of these years he conducted a wheelwrights and coach builders business in Bacchus Marsh. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wheelwrights and blacksmiths played an essential role in the functioning of the whole community. Before the industrialisation of manufacturing, wheels and other components of vehicles for transport, all metal objects, including farm implements, building requirements and domestic utensils were made by hand. As mechanisation of industry increased, the smith commonly performed the role of farrier in the times when horse power was pivotal to all aspects of society. Complementing this work, the forge was often allied with a wheelwright's shop. Thomas Heath built this shop for his saddlery business around 1875. In 1926 after 58 years operating his saddlery in Bacchus Marsh he retired and the assets of his business were sold in a clearing sale. The building was located close to the current day location of 192 Main Street and has been demolished. Apart from his services in saddlery his premises was known to be a gathering place for much discussion. Heath was known to openly express his political opinions and his saddlery premises was known by many in the community as the 'Parliament'.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. The front gabled section stands directly on street level and is flanked by a picket fence. The door and overhead window and the side window with arched panels may indicate that this was the shop section, with a dwelling to the rear. The recessed side section of the building with a twelve-sectioned window, chimney and a back extension was probably the dwelling used by the family. In the doorway stands the saddler, probably Thomas Heath. To his left is a woman, possibly Mrs Heath, and a much younger woman, possibly a daughter of the Heaths. The Warrnambool Standard newspaper was started in 1872 by William Fairfax and Henry Laurie. It continues in that context today as a daily newspaper for the Western District. This copy is dated July 1 1905 and covers items of interest and advertisements for current businesses many which continued as household names until the latter part of the 20th Century. These include the following: J Younger, E Battarbee, Beattie and Phillips,Wm Ardlie, H G Wilkinson Cramond & Dickson, F Tozer, Wm Swinton, Bruce & McClure. There are reports covering items of local, national and International news events.This paper provides a snapshot of history in the given era from a Warrnambool perspective. This librarian's chair was given to the school by the family of Joy Chapman who had died during 1948. The chair was part of a number of furnishings supplied by donation for the new library which was opened in 1949. These included blackwood shelves, tables and chairs and a new set of Encycopedia Britannica supplied by the Parents and Friend's Association, a grooved periodical table given by Old Collegians Younger Set, a librarian's desk supplied by the E M Bell estate and more than 200 books supplied by the Old Collegians. (see 'A lamp burns brightly' p. 61). This item is a significant example of the degree to which the school relied on donations from the community to develop the school during the post-war years. Information from donor: "Item 2 has a long history and came to me two years ago when younger brother Pat downsized from Mentone to East Brighton. ... when mother Annie passed away [he] took possession of a roll top writing desk from the premises in which we grew up. To fit the desk in his new unit, the roll top was removed and this original manuscript was found. Silver fish have attacked the paper that is now perished but I was able to carefully obtain a photocopy and preserve a copy of Thomas Drenen's handwriting."Thomas Drenen was born 1861 and died in 1932. He was the editor of the local paper, The Rutherglen Sun, from 1886 until his retirement. This makes him unique in the opportunity to gather information on the history of the Rutherglen district. This manuscript was written by him for broadcast on radio station 3AR (which became a part of ABC Radio National). While the donor was not certain of the date of the broadcast, evidence from the document leads to the conclusion that it was between July 1927 and September 1928, as he mentions the recently opened Soldiers Memorial Hall (officially opened in July 1927) and the new Convent that was under construction (Mt Carmel Convent was officially opened in September 1928). Once they became engaged, the public developed a fascination for them—nicknaming them the “little couple.” Barnum used their engagement to publicize his show, parading the couple around to different nations’ leaders and placing newspaper announcements detailing their upcoming wedding ceremony. On their wedding day in New York City, over 2,000 people entered the church to watch the couple say their vows. Ernest Lance Young was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills, the son of Ernest Augustus Young and Ruby Nichell Whitty. He married Beryl Mair in 1939 and died on 5 October 1999 at Mont Albert. Electoral rolls record him as a manufacturer. His address after marriage was 11 York Street, Mont Albert. Beryl Mair (1916-1976) was the daughter of David Miller Mair and Lily Vipond Deakin. She had an older brother Geoffrey David (1913) and younger sisters Gwynneth (1918), Isobel Lillian (1921) and Shirley Inez (1928).This is part of a large donation of material relating to the Deakin, Mair and Young families, all of whom had connections with Surrey Hills / Mont Albert. Pru Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection.The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes.The subdivision plan for the Clutha Subdivision is one of the largest in the Society’s collection. The plan includes a map of the proposed allotments, photographic views to the north and south, and information about the kinds of buildings that could be constructed on the allotments. The subdivision was bounded by Studley Park Road, and Carson, Stevenson and Edgecombe Streets. Two new streets, Mackie Court and Younger Street were created as part of the subdivision. The subdivision took its name from ‘Clutha’, the home of John Carson, who was to become Mayor of Kew in 1863. A Report to the City of Boroondara outlined how: ‘The Clutha estate was progressively developed from 1940, with new houses under construction on the Studley Park Road, Carson and Edgecombe Street frontages by 1941. By 1943, directory listings were available for all addresses with the exception of Mackie Court. Building ceased after the government’s prohibition on civilian building was enforced from 1942, with little change in listings until the 1950s when the remainder of the subdivision was developed’."H"subdivisions - kew - studley park, clutha subdivision, studley park road

George Dickie arrived in the Bacchus Marsh area around 1857. In 1863, he married Ellen Ross Anderson, and after five years of farming in Coimadai, they moved into Bacchus Marsh and established a business. In 1866 he bought the bakery business which had been established by James Boatwood and later conducted by William Watson. This business was in Main Street and is shown in this image during the time it was owned and operated by George Dickie. Ellen and George Dickie had seven children, two sons and five daughters. In his later years he changed the business into a general store and also engaged in grain dealing. He died in 1904 but the business was carried on by his sons until sold in March 1916 to a Charles Medling from Numurkah. The building was later demolished in 1927 to make way for four new shops.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. To his left are some younger and older children, and a woman, possibly Mrs DIckie. In the background in the doorway is a young boy with woman behind him. On the right of the picture on the street is a man standing alongside a horse and cart. Some advertising signs are leaning against the shop, footpath and verandah pillar. Content includes: 'The level south at the 110 ft was driven over 35 years ago by the late Geo Phillips who had a 20 head mill on the lease and as far as I can remember its about 200 ft south and of course the reef iow well above a few feet in on account of it rising in that direction and thousands of tons has been taken out of that particular block and crushed.... the writer worked on that reef in his younger days and we connected with some old workings above us known as the German's Workings collapsed and closed up from the 100 ft level to the surface'. 'Shiloah' was the home of Isaac Jeeves the younger - son of Isaac Jeeves the Valley Pioneer and brother of Ellis Jeeves. Isaac built this house himself using local timber he cut and split. It was ready for his marriage to Selina Leach of Bayswater in 1886. ‘Shiloah' was enlarged to take guests in the early 1900s. It was situated close to a beautiful fern gully and Isaac and his family capitalised on this by setting out walking tracks through the ferns. They charged 1/- to walk through and this included afternoon tea in a garden setting. ‘Shiloah’ was a popular tourist attraction but the making of the Olinda Creek Road destroyed the fern gullies and, by the 1930s, it was all finished.Black and white photograph of wooden structure with two wings and a central verandah. Pat Grainger (1930-2023) had a distinguished career as a graphic designer. In the 1960s she lived in Brighton and was working with her husband Les Mason in the influential Les Mason Graphic Design studio in South Melbourne. This was one of three Norma Tullo outfits she owned at the time; she believed it would have been around 1967. Pat was a founding member of Port Melbourne Historical and Preservation Society and was active in local history and environmental and social justice causes. A 2 page double spread feature in the Herald Sun on 29th August 2000 to promote Legacy prior to Legacy Week. The photo of widows Jo Stanley and Muriel Love is accompanied by the article 'Picking up the pieces'. They were helped by Legacy when their husbands passed away. Muriel nursed her husband and after his death found a void, Legacy was a 'lifesaver'. Jo joined the younger widows club where each of them still have children on their hands so they have more in common and meet every second month.
