The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph - Photograph Reproduction, 1890
The photo is taken in 1890 and a man is depicted, entering the main gates of the Mental Hospital at Beechworth, with the lodge on his right side. The man is dressed according to the australian fashion of that time, wearing a dark suit and a top hat. The countryside surrounding the Hospital is in the background. The Mayday Hills Hospital was constructed between 1864 and 1867, with buildings created in a number of periods. It formally opened on 24 October 1867 and, along with the Ovens Hospital and the Benevolent Asylum, made Beechworth a prominent social welfare centre in Victoria. The need for an institution of this kind was arisen due to the increased number of people with mental disturbances (induced by the harsh living conditions on the goldfields) and the remoteness of the district from Melbourne. The site was chosen for its panoramic view of the countryside, the hilltop atmosphere and the native fauna, all contributing to the cure of patients. It was designed in Italianate style and around 250 workmen were employed for its construction. The Hospital was originally named the “Ovens Lunatic Asylum” but, during the centenary celebrations in 1967, the name was officially changed to “Mayday Hills Hospital”, showing the gradual shift in the perception and understanding of mental health conditions over the last decades. The Hospital lies on the traditional land of the Kulin Nation. This photograph is historically significant as it provides an insight into the location, surroundings and the exterior of the Mayday Hills Hospital at the end of the 19th century. It also contributes to the understanding of the district`s development and its importance to the course of Victoria`s history. Moreover, it adds information to the scientific research and the way mental health conditions were treated at that time.Black and white rectangular photograph printed on paper unframed.Obverse: Asylum Gates & Lodge/ Reverse: 3451-1/mental hospital, beechworth, australian fashion, dark suit, top hat, countryside, mayday hills hospital, ovens hospital, benevolent asylum, institution, mental disturbances, social welfare, living conditions, goldfields, workmen, italianate style, kulin nation, mental health, ovens lunatic asylum, patients -

This magazine has been collected for the article on page 2, "Pioneers and Painters" about the book published by the Shire of Eltham in celebration of its centenary, edited by Alan Marshall with a photo of Alan Marshall with the book. The article provides some background to Marshall's association with Eltham and Kangaroo Ground and includes notable mentions of Peter Glass, Cecile Glass, Clifton Pugh, Jon Olsen, Justus Jorgensen, Matcham Skipper, Montsalvat and Mudbrick houses. "The Australian Women's Weekly" has been digitised and is accessible via the National Library of Australia's Trove website. Digitised editions cover the period from its first issue in 1933 to 1982 only. The magazine published by Australian Consolidated Press out of Sydney, NSW was a national magazine and at times different issues were published for specific states. This particular issue is one such an example in that the August 4, 1971 edition available via Trove (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/page/4888729) has a different front cover and the Alan Marshall article on page 2 does not exist. The cover on this edition was originally published in NSW on the July 28 issue (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/page/4887489)alan marshall, cecile glass, clifton pugh, jon olsen, justus jorgensen, matcham skipper, montsalvat, mudbrick houses, peter glass, pioneers and painters -

Photograph, Roll of Honour Board, Eltham War Memorial, 2005
This 1954 Roll of Honour board was an action of the WW2 Eltham War memorial Trust, for hanging in their Child Welfare Centre building on their property in Main Road, Eltham. The Johnstons Furniture Production Company made up the board and had the names of the local Eltham enlistees applied in gold lettering at a total cost of £13.10.00. The names were copied by the Eltham RSL from the obelisk which was first erected by the WW1 Eltham Peace Celebrations in August 1919 at the northwest corner of Bridge Street and Main Road. During road widening plans by the Council, the obelisk was moved to the garden area of the refurbished RSL branch building in Main Road for safekeeping. The Honour Roll Board was sent to the Eltham RSL sub-branch around 1999. Following the merger of the Eltham and Montmorency sub-branches and sale of the Eltham property, the obelisk was relocated to a location in front of the Eltham War Memorial. The Honour Roll Board was retrieved by former Eltham District Historical Society President, Harry Gilham in September 2004 who arranged for it to be hung in the Eltham War Memorial Hall (former Children's Library). August Meeting (Newsletter No. 241, Aug. 2018) How do you consider designing an extension to a church that was built in 1861, just where do you start, especially when it is a church of local significance and listed by Heritage Victoria? The church in question was designed by architect Nathaniel Billings, built by well-known pioneer builder George Stebbing on land donated by Henry Dendy and is St Margaret’s Church in Pitt Street, Eltham. Adjoining this church is a large mud brick hall known to many of our Society members. It was also the venue for our 50th anniversary celebration dinner on 21st November 2017. At our Society meeting at 8.00pm on Wednesday 8th August 2018 architect David Wagner from Atelier Wagner will speak about the opportunities and challenges experienced in designing and constructing a contemporary style extension to this revered historical building, valued by the local congregation. Prior to becoming involved with St Margaret’s the Atelier Wagner architectural practice has, among an extensive range of projects, renovated and extended several churches. With this project there was also the challenge of incorporating, modifying and connecting the adjacent buildings that shared an entrance foyer.0:57:51 duration Digital MP3 File 20 MB audio recording, david wagner, eltham district historical society, jacqui wagner, meeting, society meeting, st margaret's church -
Ballarat Clarendon College
Honour board, Ballarat College Dux
This was the second honour board created by Ballarat College to honour the top academic student of each year. The first award was given in 1868 four years after the school opened. Dux of College honour boards were on display in the Assembly Hall (Sturt Street building north wing). They are featured in 1918 photographs of the Assembly Hall. The three boards cover the following years: 1868 - 1895 (partially defaced), 1896 - 1921 (completely defaced) and 1922 - 1952 (complete). This new board replacing the originals were created prior to the centenary celebration in 1964 and hung in the Memorial Hall. At amalgamation (1974) and because the Senior students moved to the Mair Street campus) this board was co-opted to honour Middle School Dux. In 2012 the school undertook a major project and created three new boards. One board honours Ballarat College Dux (1868 - 1973) and School Captains (1914 - 1973); another board honours Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies' College Dux and Head Prefect (1919 - 1973). These boards resemble the 1950 re-creation. A third board was instituted in 2012 to honour Ballarat Clarendon College Dux and School Captains (1974 - ) This board emphasizes the value placed on academic excellence by the school from its earliest beginnings. That the boards have been maintained and consistently displayed in significant places of honour within the school only further emphasizes the historial and social significance of the award 'Dux of school'. Large varnished wooden board with wood frame, four rectangular relief boards and one heading relief board. Gold leaf lettering on relief boards. dux, ballarat-college, ballarat-and-clarendon-college, honour-boards, memorial-hall, assembly-hall, 1968, 1918, 1974, middle-school-dux -

Book prize, The works of Alfred Lord Tennyson Poet Laureate
Rosina (Rose) Morey was a student at Ballarat Ladies College, girls' school of Ballarat College (1875 - 1892). Rosina Morey was born in 1871 and spent most of her life in Ballarat. Her father was Edward Morey, a mining and civic leader in Ballarat. The book was donated by Poss Morrow (Walker) having belonged to her great aunt Rose Morey. In 2008 Poss wrote: Rose loved sewing and my memories of her are that she was always dressed in black. She was the third daughter of Edward and Mary Ann Morey. Great aunt Rose spent many happy times with our family when we lived in East Malvern. My father Edward McDonald Walker was her nephew. She loved coming to the city by train to go shopping and join in the family celebrations. She never married but lived to a great age. She died in a nursing home in East Malvern 24 July 1960 and was buried in the Morey family grave in the Ballarat Old Cemetery. The prize, presented to Rose in 1889, remained in my father's library for many years and was given to me recently.Red calf-binding with fine gold border to cover; gold lettered title and school crest to front cover; and gold lettered title to spine. Document - Scout and Guide Coronation Service, 1953
The coronation of Elizabeth II as queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms took place on 2 June 1953 at Westminster Abbey in London. She acceded to the throne at the age of 25 upon the death of her father, George VI, on 6 February 1952, being proclaimed queen by her privy and executive councils shortly afterwards. The coronation was held more than one year later because of the tradition of allowing an appropriate length of time to pass after a monarch dies. It also gave the planning committees adequate time to make preparations for the ceremony. During the service, Elizabeth took an oath, was anointed with holy oil, was invested with robes and regalia, and was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Celebrations took place across the Commonwealth realms and a commemorative medal was issued. It was the first British coronation to be fully televised; television cameras were not allowed inside the abbey during her parents' coronation in 1937. Elizabeth's was the fourth and final British coronation of the 20th century. It was estimated to have cost £1.57 million (c. £53,571,428 in 2023).Scout and Guide Coronation Service of Thanksgiving. Melton City Libraries
Card, Scottish Debutante Ball invite, 1973
"The Mechanics’ Institute hall (demolished) and the library played a central role in the story of Melton social life, and in the development of its learning, culture, entertainment, celebration, commemoration and many community groups. The building on the site today - with the Court House the only remaining early community or public building remaining in High Street - is a tribute to the energy and talents of the very small Melton community over many years. Its substantial size, brick materials, and the evident use of an architect in its design, sets it apart from most other simple weatherboard Mechanics’ Institutes that were built in smaller country towns in Victoria. The financing and upkeep of this building, which was community-owned until 1982, and built on land purchased by the community rather than granted by Government, itself contributed to the coming together of the Melton community in decision making and fundraising. Although the original hall is demolished, the 1983 Melton Community Hall adjacent is partly its successor, demolition of the Institute hall having been predicated on its construction. The surviving brick front portion of the Institute was opened by the Hon. J Murray, Premier of Victoria in 1910". Scottish Debutante Ball hosted by Scots Church Melton at the Mechanics Hallchurches -
Melbourne Legacy
Uniform, Girls Uniform
A green tunic made for junior legatees to attend girls' classes. It is in great condition and is an excellent example of the uniforms used at Legacy classes. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. Melbourne Legacy would then conduct Annual Demonstrations to showcase their skills. Legacy provided uniforms free of charge for all girls attending the classes. Typical of the time the tunic appears hand made but many mothers and legatee wives would have been capable of making uniforms as they also made many of the costumes for the annual demonstrations. The tunic was donated back to Legacy from the family of Marjorie and Jacobina (Jackie) Bristol, sisters who were both junior legatees in the 1930s and 1940s after their father passed away, he was a World War 1 veteran. Jacobina later became Jackie Wood and passed away in April 2020. Marjorie became Marjorie Bachmann and passed away in 1986. Also donated were a photo of the girls at calisthenics classes, a junior legatee certificate, a souvenir handkerchief from the 90th anniversary celebrations and a $100 Legacy badge. These are catalogued separately at 01948 to 01952.A fantastic example of a uniform that was a symbol of membership of Legacy classes.A green cotton tunic with a Legacy emblem used by junior legatees used in Girls' Classes.Handwritten in blue pen '34' on the tag at the back.girls classes, uniform -

Poster, Bendigo Easter Fair, 1943
The first Bendigo Easter Fair was held on 10th and 11th April, 1871 and remains one of Australia’s longest running annual community events taking place over the Easter long weekend. Its purpose was to raise funds in aid of two local charities; The Bendigo Hospital, and The Bendigo Benevolent Asylum. The fair features events throughout the City with celebrations culminating in a parade on Easter Sunday. The parade features a variety of commercial and community groups including a large processional dragon which has been an integral part of the annual parade since 1892. The three principal golden dragons featured over the past 130 years are Loong (1892–1970), Sun Loong (1970–2019) and Dai Gum Loong (2019–present) which are housed at the Golden Dragon Museum in Bendigo. The Bendigo Easter Fair Society is custodian of the Bendigo Easter Fair and continues to support the City of Greater Bendigo’s largest festival. Each year the City produces a poster to advertise the upcoming fair and this one from 1943 reflects the war time sentiment which existed by featuring service men and women as well as the Chinese dragon. Commercially printed colour poster advertising the Bendigo Easter Fair featuring a woman riding a chinese dragon on the left hand side of print with two smaller images, one of service man in uniform bottom left and woman factory worker top right. Document, Warrnambool calling, 1933
This is a souvenir of a ‘Back To’ celebration in Warrnambool in 1934. There had been a large-scale ‘Back To’ in Warrnambool in 1930, perhaps prompted by the growing interest in the history of the town ( this was evidenced in many country towns in Victoria at the time) and the need to gather together the remaining older local people as those regarded as pioneers of the district were fast dying out. In 1934 the State of Victoria was celebrating the centenary of the first permanent white settlement at Portland and many other places besides Melbourne took this opportunity to have a reunion of past and present citizens. Also Warrnambool had at the time two men very interested in the history of the settlement – Henri Worland and Patrick O’Grady and the first Warrnambool Historical Society was established the following year with Worland and O’Grady prominent in its establishment and Martin Carter on the first committee as well. Martin Carter, whose name appears on this envelope was the organizer of the 1934 reunion. The Carter family had long been established in Warrnambool as saddlers and Martin Carter was a Warrnambool Councillor from 1917 to 1925 and Mayor during three of those years. No information is available on the ‘Miss Adams ‘ in the address but ‘ R. F. Kennedy & Co.’ refers to the well-known pharmacy business in Timor Street Warrnambool. This envelope is of interest as a souvenir of a ‘Back To’ in Warrnambool in 1934. This is a small envelope with most of the back flap missing. The inside of the envelope has a blue lining. The envelope has a franked green Australian stamp and a Warrnambool Post Office stamp. A handwritten address is on the right side of the envelope. On the left side is a printed poster/advertisement in blue, black and grey colouring. The advertisement features an illustration of a woman speaking into a telephone with a coastal scene background. ‘Warrnambool Calling 1934 Come Home For a Week Jan 13 to Jan 21 Particulars M.L.Carter Warrnambool’ ‘Miss A. Document - Photograph, Ian McDonald (Shire of Eltham), Main Road, between Arthur Street and Dudley Street, Eltham, 1968-1970
Original document produced by Ian McDonald (Eltham Shire Council) 1970. During the period 1969-1971 photos were being collected for a proposed publication on the history of the Shire of Eltham as part of its centenary celebrations in 1971 (managed by the Shire of Eltham Historical Society and Alan Marshall). The publication was Pioneers & Painters (1971), edited by Alan Marshall. The document titled "Shows area sold to Woolworths" consisted of a panorama of three B&W photo prints creating a panorama of the frontage along Main Road (SEPP_0744) and a single B&W photo print of the Shire of Eltham offices and Hall on the corner of Arthur Street and Main Road (SEPP_0737) along with typed and hand written notes by Ian McDonald. Ballarat Clarendon College
Honour board, Dux of College
These were the first honour boards created by Ballarat College to honour the top academic student of each year. The first award was given in 1868 four years after the school opened. The boards were one display in the Assembly Hall (Sturt Street building north wing). Two of the boards are featured in 1918 photographs of the Assembly Hall. The three boards cover the following years: 1868 - 1895 (partially defaced), 1896 - 1921 (completely defaced) and 1922 - 1952 (complete). New boards replacing these boards were created prior to the centenary celebration in 1964 and hung in the Memorial Hall. At amalgamation (1974) and because the Senior students moved to the Mair Street campus) these boards were co-opted to honour Middle School Dux and Junior Captains. A third board was instituted in 2012 to honour Ballarat Clarendon College Dux and School Captains (1974 - )Academic excellence and leadership are significant values for the current school and its two predecessors. These boards emphasize the great honour that is afforded to students who excell individually in these areas. Three wooden boards with decorative wood framing and arched or curved top edges and white lettering. Two boards are painted black. One board has mahogany timber stain. ballarat-college, clarendon-presbyterian-ladies-college, ballarat-and-clarendon-college, school-captain, prefect, honour-board, 1968, 1964, 1974, 1973, leadership, dux -

Photograph - de Kerilleau Homestead, c1950
The Huon family were early pastoralists in the Wodonga area. They built the mansion, de Kerilleau in 1870 and named after the family's ancestral estate in France. The original lease of the Wodonga Run was granted to Paul Huon as No. 202 on 7th February 1837, about a year after his cousin Charles Huon had squatted on the land. In August 1849, this run was transferred to Paul's son, William. Paul Huon was one of the children of Gabriel Louis Marie Huon de Kerilleau, a French nobleman who fled France during the French Revolution and travelled under a false identity with the Second Fleet in 1794. The mansion, De Kerilleau was built by William Huon in 1870. It is a solid two storey red brick building with cream brick flat window arches. The main feature of the house is its two-storey cast-iron verandah which has been restored to its original condition. When the Governor, Sir George Bowen, his wife and two daughters needed accommodation overnight after having taken part in the celebration of the railway in Wodonga in 1873, they stayed at de Kerilleau. Sir George planted a Moreton Bay fig tree in the grounds and it still stands today. de Kerilleau is a significant building in Wodonga which has been classified by the National Trust.Coloured photographs showing a variety of features of de Kerilleau homestead.huon family, de kerilleau, de kerilleau homestead -

Photograph, Happy Valley State School No.376 Honor Roll, c1920
World War One honor roll of former students of the Happy Valley State School No 376 who enlisted. The original honor roll no longer exists. There is a framed photograph of it in the current Happy Valley School building now used for community events. This honor roll would appear to be made before the end of WW1 as Ernest Alfred Yung died in September 1917 at Ypres. His brother George Alfred Yung returned who was also in the same battle returned to Australia. Honour rolls were also made to encourage more men to enlist. Margaret Young studied at Ballarat West Art School in 1894. This was one of Ballarat's Art schools. In 1907 they merged and became Ballarat Technical Art School (BTAS). Margaret became a teacher and taught for many years at BTAS, specialising in woodcarving. At the end of the First World War, Honour Boards were requested to be made to honour the men who had served. Ballarat was the main provider of these boards. Margaret Young was one of the people responsible for the carvings and specially mentioned for her work by the Caulfield School in Melbourne. On her resignation, Margaret moved to Adelaide. At the past students Reunion Celebrations in 1930, Margaret Young was to be the Guest of Honour. Unfortunately she was unable to attend due to ill health. Photograph, Legatee Grattan, 1994
A Legatee Grat Grattan with the President of the Melbourne Legacy Widows Club, Mrs Irene Noll, on the occasion of his 100th birthday celebrations at Legacy House. This photo was used in a newspaper article in 'Vetaffairs' October 1994. The article says Oriel John Grattan was born in WA and enlisted in the First AIF in 1916. He served in France and Belgium before he was wounded near Menin Gate. As a Legatee he was widely respected, he was 'something of a father figure - many of the girls were given away at their weddings by this kindly Legatee'. It continues with an interesting piece on the acquisition of Legacy house. It says: 'Perhaps his most lasting monument is Melbourne Legacy House. Through his friendship with one of the principals of the firm, Brown and Dureau, Legacy was given a donation of 30,000 pounds in 1944. A condition of the donation was that Legacy had only eight days in which to buy a building. A building across the road from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology was bought for 18,000 pounds and the balance invested. The building was sold in the early '50s and the proceeds plus the invested money enabled Legacy to buy its headquarters, Dureau House, in Swanston Street in 1955." Vetaffairs is a newspaper for the veteran community published monthly. The entire 8 page issue is kept but only the Grattan article has been scanned here.A record of a Legatee Grattans' achievements, both in the army and in later life and the impact he had on Legacy.Colour photo x 3 of Legatee Grat Grattan for his 100th birthday and article from Vetaffairs.Printed on the back "128 0133 N N N 2 2" on Kodak paper. legatee, birthday, grat grattan, dureau house
