The Villa Alba Museum is cultural institution committed to the collection, study and display of 19th century interior decorative finishes, and the components of 19th and 20th century interior decoration. Most rooms in this historically and aesthetically significant house have stone (typically marble) fireplaces that are inset with plain and decorative tiles produced by the company of Mintons Ltd.Born digital photograph of the fireplace in the fourth bedroom of Villa Alba. This is the only replacement fire place setting in the house. It was purchased with the support of a grant from the Bendigo Community Bank - Kew East Branch. The mantel, like that in the. third bedroom features garlands of polychrome painted flowers on the three panels. The mantel is inset with monochrome surround and hearth tiles. MEYER COLLECTION - FALLS CREEK PHOTOS In 1947 a determined group of like-minded State Electricity Commission (SEC) staff including Ray Meyer, the chief surveyor of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, had a common interest that revolved around the skiing potential of the snow-covered high plains which included what is now the resort of Falls Creek. The six SEC employees, Toni St Elmo, Ray Meyer, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson (together with their families) banded together to secretly build a 'hut' that was the first ski lodge at Falls Creek. Using a road built in 1930s to gain access to Falls Creek, their hut project was carried out in secret as efforts by other skiers were blocked by H.H.C. Williams – the engineer in charge of the Hydro Scheme. In 1946 Ray Meyer made a trip to the Lands Office in Melbourne. He came away with a 99-year lease on three acres that was ideally suited for a hut designed by Lloyd Dunn. Adrian Ruffenacht (Design Engineer for the KHS) had suggested where the group should build because of easy access to a spring for water. Much of the building material required was scavenged from derelict huts on the high plains. Due to the need for secrecy, the determined group worked on the hut in the evenings and weekends to avoid detection. During the building period the group had met at Echidna Rock (now known as Eagle Rock) where Skippy St Elmo announced, "This is my favourite ‘Skyline’.” And so the first lodge in the area at Falls Creek Ski Resort came into existence. With the development of the International Poma in the 1970s, the Skyline Lodge, which was sited between the ski-lift’s pole one and pole two, was demolished. However, the legacy of Ray Meyer, Toni St Elmo, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson and Skyline lives on in the vibrant atmosphere of Falls Creek Resort. The MEYER COLLECTION documents developments on the Kiewa Hydro Scheme and their life at Falls Creek from the mid 1930s to 1960s.These images are significant because they depict aspects of the life of a pioneering family of Falls Creek and the founders of "Skyline", the first lodge at Falls Creek.Images of Joan Meyer near Fitzgerald's Hut on the Bogong High Plains. Taken in 1877, this photograph features nine members of the Beechworth Volunteer Fire Brigade holding a cup that was awarded to the group for winning the double hose competition. The cup is currently on display in the Burke Museum's 'Street of Shops' display Report of the event in the Ovens and Murray Advertiser, 3/4/1877 - The Fire Brigade Competition was held in Beechworth at Easter 1877. The double-hose competition carried a prize of ten pounds with an entry fee of ten shillings. The McLean family, Hector John McLean and Louisa Frances (nee Green) and six daughters lived in Eltham during the period 1930 to 1934 inclusive. Lived in the former Evelyn Hotel at the time it was destroyed by fire in 1931. In reminiscences provided by daughter Edith, she recalls that her mother always blamed herself for the fire. When she finished cooking on the old wood stove she would always clean up and take the ashes outside in an ash pan to bury them for safety. She believed she must have dropped some oas she walked across the back verandah or the breeze caiught some sparks as she opened the door. It was a very hot day. She believed that they must have fallen down some cracks in the floor boards and smouldered on papers and rubbish in the cellar. Background to the two openings of the "Goat Shed": Following a need to clean up some of the old L&L Centre buildings, in 1989 Council decided to enclose the remaining goat shed in a steel truss frame for use as a store room. Claire Fitzpatrick, who had run animal husbandry and goat classes on the site from the 1975 opening of the L&L Centre, was invited by the Committee to officiate at the naming of the new building on 3/12/1989. Following a fire of the stables/workshops on 8/5/1990 (which had to be cleared off the site) Council/Committee decided to use the $15000 insurance money to upgrade/refurbish the 1989 building to replace classrooms lost in the "stables fire". This refurbished Goat Shed was officially opened on 30/5/1991 by Cr. Peter Graham, Shire President. The Procession of floats travelled from the Eltham Shopping Centre to Eltham Lower Park on Saturday 10th April as part of the Shire of Eltham centenary celebrations program. One of three photographs. The Infant Welfare Centre and BP service station can be seen in the background. Participants in the parade included the Eltham Film Society, Scout group, Eltham volunteer fire brigade, riders on horses, including Jock Read on his horse Shamus in front of the fire truck, and horse and carts. A cowley roller from the Melbourne Steam traction engine club and a McDonald roller represented Eltham Shire Council in the 19th and 20th centuries. Another float includes a bark hut with trailer representing pioneers with a banner reading "The trues heores our pioneers". One view shows Eltham Village under construction by H.M. The earthquake at Napier, also known as the Hawke's Bay Earthquake, took place on 03 February 1931 at about 10.45 am. There was no warning before the ground started to heave and roll in waves. It was not possible to stand without support, and the violent motion caused stone and brick buildings to collapse into the streets causing death and injury to hundreds who were going about there daily business. Fires started almost immediately, and with the water mains shattered, the fire fighters were powerless to stop or prevent the spread of the flames. Within twelve hours the greater part of the business area of Napier and its port was totally destroyed. As a result of the pressure which caused the upheaval, the levels of the town and the surrounding district have been altered. The town and the harbour were raised from five to seven feet, and many parts of the inner harbour became dry land. in 1887 six Ashford Litters were purchased by St John Ambulance Association after Lady Janet Clarke (of Rupertswood) and her friends raised enough money to allow these items to be ordered. These were Victoria's first official ambulances. The litter consisted of a two wheeled undercarriage with elliptical springs which supported a stretcher. It has four legs which support the carriage when stationary but fold up to form handles so that one person could push the machine while another pushed. Four Ashford Litter ambulances were located at the Russell Street, Little Bourke Street, King Street and West Melbourne police stations. Another was located at the Melbourne Town Hall on Swanston Street and from 1896 the sixth was located at the Eastern Hill Metropolitan Fire Brigade station. The publication was Pioneers & Painters (1971), edited by Alan Marshall. The document titled "Shows area sold to Woolworths" consisted of a panorama of three B&W photo prints creating a panorama of the frontage along Main Road (SEPP_0744) and a single B&W photo print of the Shire of Eltham offices and Hall on the corner of Arthur Street and Main Road (SEPP_0737) along with typed and hand written notes by Ian McDonald. Sad-irons or "solid" irons were made by blacksmiths and used to smooth out material by pressing the hot iron over it. A piece of sheet -iron was placed over the kitchen fire and the irons placed on it could be heated whilst remaining clean of ash.. The women used 2 irons - one heating while the other was used. Thick cloth or gloves protected their hands from the hot irons. The handle was removed from the cool iron and re- attached to remove the hot iron from the fire. The cool iron was replaced on the fire or stove to heat again. These irons were cleaned with steel wool to prevent them marking the material. If the iron was too hot the material would scorch. Most homes set aside one day for ironing and some large households had an ironing room with a special stove designed to heat irons. However, most women had to work with a heavy, hot iron close to the fireplace even in summer. Late in the 19thC designers experimented with heat retaining fillings for these irons. William Coleman began selling Kerosene lanterns in 1900 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, USA. He moved to Wichita, Kansas in 1902 and the company became world wide. The company also produced a range of cooking stoves and domestic irons. Bushfire perimeter rather than bushfire area is the main control problem for firefighters on the ground. A conundrum rapidly compounded by spot fires. A small 5 ha fire can be nearly 1 km around the perimeter. That's a long way to build a control line by hand in rough bush. Dry firefighting techniques by hand were mostly confined to “knocking down” or “beating out” the flames, as well as "digging out". Digging or raking a “mineral earth” trail down to bare dirt proved most effective in forest fuels which, unlike grass, tend to retain heat and smoulder. Early tools were whatever happened to be close at hand. They were simple and primitive and included shovels, slashers, axes, hoes, beaters and rakes. A cut branch to beat the flames was often the only thing available. Farming and logging tools, developed over centuries of manual labour, and readily available at local hardware stores came into use, but little thought was given to size, weight, and balance. This leather beater was based on a century-old stockman's design which used green cow hide leather lashed to a broom handle. It's recommend that users lift no more than above knee height to conserve energy and let the beater to the work. For years foresters experimented with combination tools. Assay is a process of metallurgy and chemical analysis used to determine proportions of precious metals in ores and other metallurgy substances such as silver or gold. The process helps identify pollutants present within a sample and can indicate a high level of pollution in a mining site. Stoneware crucibles are used in the fire assay process due to their ability to withstand high temperatures. Fire assay is a three step process where by samples from the mine are ground in a find powder and then mixed with dry powder chemicals. This mixture is heated in a crucible to extreme temperatures (crucible fusion) until all of the powers fuse into a glass like slag. Once this reaction is complete, the contents are poured into a mold and cooled. In step three (known as cupellation) the mixture is separated in a fire assay cupel and once this is complete the cupel with reveal a small bead of precious metals. Established by George Guthrie in 1857 (about 5km north of its current site) and then again seven years later in 1864 after it initially closed, Bendigo Pottery remains one of the most influential and longest running potteries in Australia. Over the years the Pottery has contributed to the growth and development of the district through both its products including building products, table ware and decorative and commemorative war as well as artistically, being responsible for training and supporting many potters locally. It has partnered with the City on various tourism promotions and the Civic Collection holds a number of important items within its collection.Two stoneware vessels of differing dimensions (0287.1 & .2). See image i4 for hi res scan of negative\ Neville Britton of the BTM advised 2/5/2020: Seven LaFrance 100' ladders built by the American LaFrance Company, of Elmira, New York arrived in Australia in 1942 as part of the WW2 lend lease program. One each to Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide. Four initially to the MFB but within a short period of time went to the CFA. One each to Geelong City FS, Ballarat City FS and Bendigo FS. The fourth was a stand in and was located at the Ballarat FS when not required. Thus the two ladders in the photo at the Ballarat City FS. I was a volunteer at Ballarat City FB from 1967 and commenced my career employment there in 1970. The two LaFrance ladders were still in Ballarat at that time. In the mid 70's the 'spare' was allocated to the Dandenong FS. They were retired in the 1980's. The four Victorian ladders still survive. Ex Geelong City is at the Fire Services Museum Victoria. They have a second one that was acquired by a private collector. It was neglected and returned to the FSMV in poor condition. Ex Ballarat City was driven to Sydney and remains at the Museum of Fire at Penrith. The fourth one was acquired by a private collector and stored in a shed in North Geelong and never moved. He recently died and it may have been sold. They had a V12 petrol engine with all ignition parts duplicated. So two Distributors, two ignition coils and two spark plugs per cylinder. Arson attack on Mullum Primary. by Damian KempArsonists caused between $300,000 to $500,000 damage to Mullum Primary School classrooms and offices by starting a blaze at around 1 am on Monday. Up to 35 fire-fighters attended the blaze which took about 30 minutes to control. According to Detective Sergeant Phillip Hubbard of the arson squad, the blaze was deliberately lit.

The Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation was conferred by General Cao Van Vien, Chief of the Joint General Staff, Armed Forces of the Republic of Vietnam on 24 October 1970, and officially presented to the 8th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment by Lieutenant General Do Cao Tri, Commander of II Corps and Military Region 3 Vietnam on 29th October 1970. The citation was awarded for "always displaying high morale while co-operating and assisting the Vietnamese people in their struggle against Communism and to defend peace and freedom .. in Military Region III ... Though fighting under the most difficult conditions, the members of the 8th Battalion, 1st Australian Task Force still fought bravely and determinedly and had many glorious victories. Their most remarkable military operations took place in the area of the Long Hai hills... These photos of the Bogong High Plains were all taken by Ronald George Thorn who was a cadet engineer with the State Electricity Commission. He worked on the Kiewa scheme from 1948 to 1950 doing overhead line construction and maintenance plus electrical design and drawing work. Percy Andrew Goulburn MAKEPEACE No.3558, enlisted 5.8.15 aged 19 in 8th reinforcements 21st Bn AIF, embarked 29.12.1915 for Eygpt. Transferred to 57th Bn. KIA 24.9.1917 while a Bn runner. He was killed by shell fire while moving to 58th Bn near Polygon Wood. Roy Arnold enlisted in A Coy 20th Batt AIF on 10.3.15. Awarded the Military Medal at Mont St Quentin on 31.8.18. He carried messages through heavy artillery, machine gun and rifle fire then acted as a Stretcher Bearer for 12 hours carrying wounded to the RAP. He was appointed L/Cpl on 22.9.18. The damage to the antenna was caused during a contact by a crew member of the APC as he traversed the machine gun around firing as he went. A crew member of the APC Trooper George Cameron Wood souvenired this section of the antenna. George, No 3798253 served in Vietnam from 10.11.70 to 21.10.71 with A & B Sqds of 3 Cav Regt and 1st Forward delivery troop.
