By around circa 1850 Braybrook was already well established, and during the gold rush period also became a staging point for prospectors on their way to the diggings. Local government for the area began on 28th May 1860 when the BRAYBROOK ROAD BOARD DISTRICT was proclaimed, however this authority was soon superseded on 23rd January 1871 when the SHIRE OF BRAYBROOK came into existence. Local government for this rural area to the west of Melbourne came when the BRAYBROOK ROAD DISTRICT was proclaimed on 28 May 1860. This authority was superseded on 23 January 1871 with the formation of the SHIRE OF BRAYBROOK. The Shire of Braybrook existed for about 80 years during which time it experienced significant industrial growth. The Shire of Braybrook ceased to exist in 1951 when the CITY OF SUNSHINE was formed. The Coat of Arms informs the observer that the Shire of Braybrook was initially a rural area with its images of a cow, sheep, and hay. The reference to industry however probably does not indicate adequately the large growth in industrial activity that occurred within the Shire. Circular board of Masonite painted by A. H. The Shire of Braybrook (1871–1951) was a vast, semi‑rural municipality stretching from Melton to West Melbourne, centred on the old Braybrook village at Solomon’s Ford. It transformed dramatically with the arrival of railways, the rise of Braybrook Junction/Sunshine, and the industrial boom driven by H.V. McKay’s Harvester Works. The area was first organised as the Braybrook Road District on 28th May 1860, after a public meeting at the Shamrock Hotel in Albion. The district was enormous, extending from Melton to Dynon Road on the West Melbourne swamp. Early settlement clustered around Solomon’s Ford on the Maribyrnong River, a key crossing for travelers heading to Geelong, Williamstown, and the goldfields. On 23rd January 1871, the Road District became the Shire of Braybrook. Council meetings were initially held in Maidstone, reflecting the early population centres. The Braybrook Shire Hall in Deer Park was built in 1885. That 1885 building was the first official hall and council offices for the Shire of Braybrook, long before the municipality shifted its centre of gravity toward Sunshine. It stood near the Deer Park Hotel and served as the administrative heart of the shire during the late 19th century. The Braybrook Shire Hall at Deer Park effectively closed as a council headquarters in 1930, when the Shire of Braybrook shifted its administrative centre to Sunshine. In 1951, the Shire of Braybrook was renamed the City of Sunshine, reflecting the shift of population and industry eastward. In 1994 - 1995 the Kennett Government reduced Victoria’s councils from 210 to 78, the largest restructuring of local government in the state’s history and this part of the City of Sunshine became the City of Brimbank. It is believed this extension table came from the Shire of Braybrook Shire Office located in Ballarat Road, Deer Park, opposite the Deer Park Hotel. The Braybrook Road Board proclaimed on the 28th May 1860, and subsequently on the 23rd January 1871, renamed to The Shire of Braybrook. The Braybrook Roads Board and Shire of Braybrook were the earliest form of local government for the entire district that later became Sunshine, and its jurisdiction originally stretched all the way west to Toolern Creek near present‑day Melton. This means that much of what we now think of as “East Melton” and “Rockbank” was once governed from Braybrook.Mention in this document includes Charles Grimes and John Batman, two of the district's early explorers, the local aborigine clans, Kororoit Creek, Keilor Plains, Rockbank Inn and the Rockbank Beam Wireless Station.Shire Of Melton Heritage Study Environmental History David Maloney May 2007charles grimes, kororoit creek, derrimut, first nation, aboriginal, aborigine, hume and hovell, rockbank inn, keilor plains, john batman, rockbank, rockbank wireless station

Tottenham Technical School operated from 1957 to 1991. It was part of the post‑war expansion of technical education in Melbourne’s west, serving the rapidly growing industrial belt around Tottenham, West Footscray, Braybrook and Sunshine. The school provided trade‑oriented education: engineering, metalwork, woodwork, technical drawing, applied sciences and practical subjects aligned with local industry. It became a major feeder for apprenticeships at nearby factories including the rail workshops, ammunition factories, and manufacturing plants. Tottenham Technical School was renamed Tottenham Community Secondary College, still carrying its original school number In 1991, a major restructure of schools in the Sunshine district occurred and six schools were merged to form Sunshine College. Tottenham Technical School was closed, and its site did not continue as a Sunshine College campus. The former Tottenham Technical School site became the Tottenham English Language Centre, which still operates today.Tottenham Technical School June 12th 1974 Form 5Btottenham technical school, south road, braybrook, tottenham english language centre

A meeting was held on 18th August 1947 at the East Sunshine Community Hall with the aim of forming a motor cycle club. The name BRAYBROOK MOTOR CYCLE CLUB was decided upon "as it would cater for riders and non-riding members in all surrounding districts". The first President was Don Minahan with Bert Watson as Secretary. They had been members of the Auto Cycle Union whose members became dissatisfied with the prize money awarded, so the Victorian Motorcycle Association (VMCA) was formed. The President of the VMCA (Mr. A. Clarke) attended the meeting on 3rd September 1947 which was held in the Hall behind the Sunshine Theatre. This became the regular meeting place. The new Braybrook Club affiliated with the VMCA joining clubs from Altona, Coburg, Essendon, Newport and Preston. Membership mostly came from recreational motor bike riders looking for more structured competitive riding experience and enjoyment. The club conducted its events on Sunday afternoons and as sport at that time was not permitted on Sundays, they overcame that obstacle by seeking a silver coin donation (pointing out that "two bob" was expected). The events were mainly dirt scrambles over open land which today is known as "off road". The favourite sites were Sunshine's ample open spaces such as Glengala Road and McIntyre Road, as well as Arundell Road (Keilor) and Laverton. For track racing experience the club formed a very basic dirt track on the open land in Glengala Road west of the original Sunshine Golf Club, which was very popular on Sunday afternoons for both riders and spectators. In the early 1950's Motorbike and Sidecar races were also witnessed on some Sundays, on a track near the corner of McIntyre and Furlong Roads, North Sunshine. During 1950 the Braybrook members voted in favour of allowing the Sunshine Club to amalgamate with them and form the BRAYBROOK AND DISTRICT MOTORCYCLE CLUB. The merger took place at the meeting on 10th July 1950 when office bearers were elected. The club disbanded in the mid 1960's due to the massive residential development occurring in the Sunshine district, and so activities were merged with the Newport Club. The above information is mainly compiled from Sunshine Advocate articles published on 29/8/47, 12/9/47, and 30/6/50, and from written details supplied by Mr. J. N. Willaton. Further details or corrections from interested readers are welcome. The Braybrook and District Motorcycle Club has not existed in its own right for several decades. This type of wrench or spanner was used as a service tool for H. V. McKay Pty. Ltd. manufactured agricultural machinery. This specific tool belonged to Albert (Bert) Montgomery of 11 Kamarooka St, Albion. Bert Montgomery was born in Sunshine and in 1910 was apprenticed as a carpenter with Sunshine Harvester Works, where he worked as a wood machinist. On 19 August 1914, while still an apprentice, he enlisted in the First AIF. He left McKay's and started business as a builder probably just prior to WW2. After the war he joined the Shire of Braybrook as Assistant Building Surveyor until he retired. In 1962 Bert and his friend Jack Causon (proprietor of an Anderson Road second hand store that previously was Les James grocery) were on a fishing trip to Lake Tooliorook (aka Ettrick) near Lismore, Victoria. Their boat capsized and both fishermen were drowned. Bert was a Past President of Sunshine RSL and at that time it was reported that his funeral was the largest that Sunshine had seen. The information about Bert Montgomery was supplied by a Committee member of the Sunshine & District Historical Society Inc. who spoke to Montgomery's daughter, who also donated the tool. This tool serves as a reminder of the large H. V. McKay agricultural manufacturing works that once existed in Sunshine. The tool is associated with the works, and the design is significant enough for images of the tool to be used in an artistic mural, which is painted on the Eastern Pillar of the new H. V. The Braybrook Hotel is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Melbourne’s western suburbs, a bluestone wayside inn established during the gold‑rush era and central to the early civic life of Braybrook, Sunshine, and the Ballarat Road district. In 1989, the Braybrook Hotel underwent a significant round of works that included new additions to the side and rear of the building. These works were designed to expand the hotel’s usable space while keeping the original 1850s bluestone structure intact. These photographs, taken by The Advocate newspaper, capture the period just before the new drive‑in and liquor bar were due for completion. The new large bistro area at the rear was scheduled to open in April the following year. These photographs show the 1989 additions taking shape during construction along the side and rear of the building.Launching Of Book By Prue McGoldrick By Barry Jones Sunshine Townhall 145.1braybrook hotel, ballarat road, braybrook

Braybrook Junction State School was the original name for what later became Sunshine State School and then Sunshine Primary School (School No. 3113), one of the earliest formal educational institutions in the district. The school opened in 1891 on the corner of Hampshire Road and Morris Street, but enrolments grew so quickly that the building became inadequate within months. The first head teacher was Mr Thomas Flynn. Later in 1891, the school was relocated to the Braybrook Public Hall, at the north‑east corner of Hampshire Road & Benjamin Street. This is one of two Hume and Hovell Cairns erected in the City of Brimbank. The Deer Park Cairn was erected in 1924, one hundred years after the explorers passed through the district. It was built by ratepayers of Shire of Braybrook as part of a statewide centenary program that installed 37 monuments along the expedition route. The monument has been moved twice due to widening of Ballarat Road. The first time was in the 1960's. More recently it was moved onto the Deer Park Primary School land just outside the fence line. The original location is slightly southwest of the current position.5624.02 - Deer Park Hume And Hovell Monument 2nd April 2020 Photo 05.JPG 5624.01 - Deer Park Hume And Hovell Monument 2nd April 2020 Photo 04.JPG 5624.03 - Deer Park Hume And Hovell Monument 2nd April 2020 Photo 08.JPGhume and hovell, ballarat road, deer park

In 1910, Alice Errington donated six acres of land to the people of St Albans. The land donated was located on the south side of Boundary Road (Now Main Road East), which was the border between the Shire of Braybrook and the Shire of Keilor, In reality, the community was one, and Alice intended the land provide recreation facilities for both the Shire of Braybrook and the Shire of Keilor residents. In 1929, the reserve trustees decided to vest the land to the Shire of Braybrook Council due to ongoing rate costs, liability for road construction costs and the need for formal municipal management. The memorial wrought iron gates were added later and are one of the few early memorials in St Albans that have a tangible link to the pioneer era of the district. Over the years the reserve has seen various landscaping design changes, and various sporting club rooms and community buildings added. This photograph taken in 1993, captures the planting of a Canary Island tree in the reserve to reflect the 1920's - 1940's civic planting trends. As of the 8th January 2026 this tree is still alive and growing in the reserve. Errington Reserve is one of the few reserves created by a private donation, and one of the earliest examples of a woman shaping public space in the St. Albans district.5658 - Errington Reserve Palm Tree Planting (Sun Adv 203.3) 1993 Photo 02.JPGmain road east, st. albans, errington reserve, alice errington
