Bob Hymans Collection Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This letter is significant because it documents the services supplied by the SEC to the community of Falls Creek.A notice outlining procedures lodgeholder should follow if they wish to access supplies of briquettes to be delivered to Falls Creek by the SEC.Lodgeholders were urged to attend to displays before the weather and access via road deteriorated.falls creek tourist area management committee, winter fuel supplies falls creek

These two pencils have been marked with names to serve as advertising items and souvenirs. One is from Zanos’ Elite Café of 80 Liebig Street. This café operated in the 1950s and 60s. The other is from the Jaycee 20th Victorian Zone Conference of 1965 held in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) was established in the early 1950s to advance business and encourage civic leadership in its members. The Briquette Company was a sponsor of the 1965 Conference.These pencils are of minor interest as examples of advertising techniques used in the second half of the 20th century. Briquettes, made from Brown coal, were an economical source of heating for the Home The Methodist Children's Home in Cheltenham was founded c1880 to provide housing for neglected children from the inner city. The Founders aimed to provide regular nourishment, a stable environment and integrate the children into the local community thereby improving their education and lives. ( see 00561) 1950's saw a new direction for the support of children and families in poor and difficult situations . The new Burwood Homes Facility opened in 1951 and children were transferred from Cheltenham in 1952. The land was sold to the St John of God, Catholic Order in1953 who maintained an orphanage until Myer Pty Ltd bought the site in 1967 and constructed the Southland Shopping Centrec1892-1953 The Methodist Children's Home Cheltenham was founded to provide safe accommodation and education for neglected children from the inner city slums.
