In the mid 1990s, a self-help course for children with arthritis was held at the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria's headquarters. Following the course was a barbeque for the children and their families. Around 1998 to 1999, the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV) developed an Arthritis Self Management Course. Course leaders were trained to deliver the program, which utilised Kate Lorig and James F Fries' landmark self-help book, "The Arthritis Helpbook". This photo depicts course leader, Noel Smith, teaching the Arthritis Self Management Course to a small group of people in either late 1998 or early 1999. A similar photo appears on page 10 of the Vol 12 Issue 1, Autumn 1999 edition of the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria's quarterly magazine, Arthritis Update.
