The Ballarat School of Mines was established in 1870 through the initiatives of the Ballarat Mining Board making it the oldest site of technical education in Australia. The Board was concerned with the shortage of mine managers for the goldfields. Classes began in surveying, mathematics, and chemistry and a decade later they included metallurgy , assaying and geology. With the decline in goldmining the direction of the college changed and broadened, the art School was established and the Ballarat Junior Technical School developed. In 1976, the tertiary sector seperated from the School of Mines and Industries Ballarat to form the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In the 1980s SMB was a Community College of Technical Education and Further Education (TAFE) offering a wide range of vocational, enrichment and preparatory programs. It is continuing the tradition of providing for the educaiton needs of people within the Central Highlands. During the 1970s and 80s it acquired and refurbished old buildings and developed new facilities to keep up with the needs of an expanding curriculum and student population. This box was crafted from a portion of one of the original oak trees in the Jarrahmond WW11 Avenue of Honour. The Avenue was planted in 1955 and linked the farms of the two servicemen from Jarrahmond who lost their lives in WWII. It consisted of English Oaks interspersed with flowering peaches and cherries. Wood for the box was collected in the early 1990's by Stan Weatherall following a windstorm. Stan had the timber rough-sawn into planks by local sawmiller Max Reynolds. The timber was stored for a number of years before being given to Don McLean.A hand-made oak box. The inside base is lined in green felt. The lid is single hinged. the front panel displays a radiating pattern in the grain of the oak wood that resembles the rising sun badge of the Australian Defence Forces. Two brass pins are symbols of Australian military regalia. Inside the box is an envelope with information and letters on the manufacture of the box and presentation to Orbost. The information concerns the Jarrahmond School and the Avenue of Honour.handcraft oak jarrahmond-avenue-of-honour container

The main photo is by Max Lowenhardt and shows John Green, Mrs Eva Penny (inside the tree and hardly visible) nursing Charlie, May, George and Nicolas Penny. Colin Silcock wrote of the tree on p.39 that the family lived int he hollowed-out butt for nine months in 1906-1907. It was 20 feet across at floor level with 12 feet of head room inside. Nicholas Penny ring-barked the tree in 1905, with it being 130 feet high with the top broken off. The fires the following year destroyed the tent in which he was living and hollowed out the tree. After "making a few alterations" Penny moved in and brought his wife and children across from Outtrim. They later built a more permanent home. The tree was destroyed in the 1926 bushfires. Shire of Eltham Archives: Series 69, Item 2 This video was produced for the Shire of Eltham in response to the 1985 Victorian Local Government Commission Report titled ‘The Restructure of Local Government in Victoria – Principles and Program’ (the Morris review). The recommendation was to amalgamate the Shires of Eltham and Diamond Valley, something that Eltham Council did not support as being appropriate for the shire or compatible with the 'Spirit of Eltham'. The video features Shire President, Cr. Mary Grant talking with the Hon. Pauline Toner MP and Max McDonald MP. Eltham Shire CEO Rodney Roschellor presents an alternate proposal for a shire merging more aligned to the 'Spirit of Eltham'.Also featured are Eltham icons such as the Eltham Railway Trestle Bridge, Montsalvat, Eltham Community Centre along with mudbrick making, artist Matcham Skipper, the Green Wedge and St Andrews Market.
