From 1955 Alan Marshall's home was a bungalow at the rear of his sister's house at Eltham. The first bungalow burnt down. Its replacement shown here still stands. In March 2020 the property was sold. It was last sold previously in November 1982. No mention was made in the advertising regarding the heritage protected bungalow in the rear yard and advertising material presented it as having future potential to develop STCA (Subject To Council Approval). Concerned local members of the community alerted to EDHS to the pending upcoming sale and Council was also alerted to the sale and the potential risk presented to the heritage protected bungalow. In 2021 an updated amendment, C133nill, was made to the Nillumbik Planning Scheme in response to a planning application to develop the property following its sale. The Minster of Planning approved and gazetted the Amendment. Gazettal occurred on 25th November 2021. A copy of the gazetted Amendment is available on website of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning at www.planning.vic.gov.au/schemes-and-amendments/browse-amendments. Greensborough Historical Society are calling for a 170 year old apple tree once owned by John Batman to be given heritage protection.The "Batman apple tree' in Greensborough is believed to be the last existing tree from those brought to Victoria from Tasmania by John Batman. This is a model of the ship La Bella which was built in Norway in 1893. From 1902 the La Bella worked the timber trade between New Zealand and Australia under the command of Captain George Mylius. In 1905 the ship hit a submerged reef about 100 metres from the Warrnambool Breakwater and was grounded and wrecked. Seven men drowned in the wreck and five, including the captain, were saved. A local fisherman, William Ferrier, was hailed as a hero when he went in the stormy seas in a small dinghy with one oar to rescue two of the men. In 1982 the remains of the wreck were re-discovered and the ship now has maritime heritage protection. Harry McKenna, a Warrnambool resident, was a well-known maker of ship modelsThis model is of considerable interest because: 1. It is a representation of the local Warrnambool ship, the ‘La Bella’ (wrecked in Warrnambool Bay 1905) 2. It is an example of the art of making ship models in bottles 3. It was made by Mr Harry McKenna, a well-known Warrnambool 20th century resident. This is glass bottle with a white stopper. The bottle contains a model of a ship with three wooden masts and white sails and a wooden hull. The object is now one of the shipwreck artefacts in Flagstaff Hill’s McCulloch Collection, which includes other items recovered from the Victoria Tower, built in Liverpool by Evans in 1969, and wrecked the same year near Torquay, Victoria, on its maiden voyage. A diver salvaged the objects in the early 1970s while working along the southwest coast of Victoria. Advanced marine technology had enabled divers to explore the depths of the ocean and gather its treasures before the Government introduced protective legislation. The artefacts were donated to the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) by a passionate shipwreck lover. Bruce McCulloch verified their locations. Two flat arms of different lengths are joined on either side of a fitting that has a fleur-de-lis-like design. The shorter arm has a J-shaped brass pipe fitted to it with a decorative threaded cube joint partway along, and ends with a triangular tap and knob. The longer arm is also J-shaped and ends with a feather design. There are remnants of green paint on the cube fittings and the knob. This report was prepared by historian Robin da Costa-Adams to assess the cultural heritage significance of "Enniskillen" at 14 Balwyn Road, Canterbury. It includes some family history on a number of prominent families - the McAlpin family, the Hindson family and the architect, Arthur William Plaisted who designed 'Enniskillen' for the McAlpin family. McAlpin's was a major Victorian flour company in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Owned and operated by J. McAlpin and Sons, the company sold its flour products across Australia and overseas. McAlpin's developed a successful marketing campaign which was pitched directly at housewives. One innovation was the publishing of a free cookbook which had recipes in it that used McAlpin's products. These free cookbooks were published successively from the 1930s through to the 1960s in Australia. Arthur Plaisted also designed the Surrey Hills Medical Centre in Union Road c1911. Some of his work is featured on the State Library of Victoria Collection. Robin da Costa-Adams has researched and written many publications including 'Blackburn a picturesque history, 1978'; 'Land of Gold: Gwlad yr Aur: James Tipping and a Mining Heritage'; 'Address (with signatories) from the women of Ballarat & Ballarat East to the women of England 1864 : against transportation of convicts', compiled and indexed by Robin; and 'Connie's Story : commemorating the Life of Mrs Edward (Plorn) Dickens'. Robin has been a tireless campaigner for heritage protection in Canterbury. This document on 'Enniskillen' was included with Robin's submission for 2 VCAT hearings regarding possible development of the property. Both resulted in a judgement against the proposed developments. Pipe bowls are each decorated with the image of a Negro slave head moulded into it and facing away from the smoker. The pipe heads have no stems. Both have a vertical line down the centre of the face, broad nostrils, sunken eyes, and recessed hair. 8508.1 - features are worn, but the ear is distinct, forehead bare, eyes sunken. The bowl is complete. 8508.2 - features are distinct, eyes closed, thick, broad lips. The back section of the bowl is missing. In 1850, George Maw and his brother Arthur began their first factory in Worcester, and in 1862, the company moved to Broseley, Shropshire. The Andrews Labor Government said it would deliver locals in Melbourne’s north-east more peak hour train services and less time stuck at boom gates, and we have. The first stage of the Hurstbridge Line Upgrade has been delivered – six months early and on budget. This includes the new Rosanna Station, duplicated track between Heidelberg and Rosanna and the removal of the dangerous level crossings at Alphington and Rosanna. There’s more to do and only Labor will deliver the next stage of the Hurstbridge Line Upgrade to give local commuters more train services and a more comfortable commute. The $530 million project will include a brand new train station at Greensborough and the duplication of three kilometres of track between Greensborough and Montmorency, and 1.5 kilometres of track between Diamond Creek and Wattle Glen to allow more train services during the morning peak. This will allow trains to run every six and a half minutes at Greensborough, every 10 minutes at Eltham and Montmorency, and every 20 minutes at Hurstbridge, Diamond Creek and Wattle Glen – as well as two extra Hurstbridge express services. Locals on the Labor Government’s new Mernda line will also get five extra train services during the morning peak, with a major upgrade of the Clifton Hill junction where the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines connect. Labor will also protect the Eltham Trestle Bridge – the last remaining timber bridge on Melbourne’s electric train network – which has local heritage protection and is an important part of the area’s character. The Liberals will leave this bridge to rot and demolish the nearby childcare centre and football club with their under-cooked and under-costed promise to upgrade the Hurstbridge line. Only Labor will protect this important piece of Melbourne’s history with planning work to be carried out for a long-term solution as part of the project. Stage two of the Hurstbridge Line Upgrade will create more than 950 jobs, with construction to start in 2020 and finish by 2022.
