Banner, Gray-Y Banner
The Athletics Club under the guidance of a committee of workers, which included Mr Stan Hemmings and Mr Alec McCullough, sponsored a Junior Athletics Club which became the Gray-Y Club for young boys and HY-Y for older lads. Mr A E Clark (YMCA) had the idea of adopting the American Gray-Y System which was to instill in the boys good principles and values similar to those of the service clubs i.e. YMCA, the Masons and Buffalo Lodge. Story has it that the town was virtually crime free for many years. The Athletics Club became a very powerful force in Mount Beauty and assisted other fledgling groups to get started. The committee had the bright idea that they could raise money and entertain the men who lived in the outlying camps by running sporting exhibitions by their members and the Gray-Y boys for entertainment. It is a connection to the early history of Mount Beauty regarding the start of an athletics club.Blue material banner with gold fringe and inscription in middle.Red material triangle inserted within banner and red material H and I (overlapping) sewed into the middle of the triangletextile, youth club, mt beauty, athletics club, gray-y club, kiewa hydro electric scheme -

Folder - Mt Beauty Gra-y Club Senior Group Attendance Record, Mt Beauty Gra-y Club Senior Group
The Athletics Club (began April 1951) under the guidance of a committee of workers which included Mr Stan Hemmings and Mr Alex McCullough, sponsored a Junior Athletics Club which became the Gra-Y Club (in August 1951) for young boys and Hy-Y for older lads. Mr A. E. Clark (YMCA) had the idea of adopting the American Gra-Y system which was to instil in boys good principals and values similar to those of the service clubs ie. YMCA, the Masons and Buffalo Lodge. Story has it that the town was virtually crime free for many years. The Athletics Club became a very powerful force in Mt Beauty and assisted other fledging groups to get started. The committee had the bright idea that they could raise money and entertain the men who lived in the out-lying camps by running sporting exhibitions by their members and the Gra-y boys for entertainment.Mt Beauty was a SECV construction town at the end of the Kiewa valley. Its remoteness encouraged the community to create clubs for recreation for all age groups so that those involved would be purposefully engaged. The Gra-Y club achieved this for 4.5 year olds to 12 year olds and included a junior group and a senior group.Manila folder, foolscap size, with seven pages held by four staples at the spine. Clothing - Dress, Day dress, circa 1855-1872
This dress was donated as having belonged to Annie Elizabeth McLean, who worked as a maid to the daughters of Samuel Renwick of Caulfield. Annie was born in Argyllshire, Scotland in 1853. This dress appears to have been originally made circa 1855 and then modified circa 1872. As Annie would only have been two years old in 1855, this indicates that the dress would most probably have been originally made for someone else and later acquired by Annie. Annie Elizabeth McLean arrived in the Colony of Victoria from Argyllshire, Scotland with her aunts and cousins in 1867, aged thirteen and a half. She had been educated in Scotland and eventually became a personal maid and then companion to the Renwick girl, daughters of Samuel Renwick of Caulfield, Victoria. The Renwicks' home, 'The Garrell' on Glen Eira Road, was one of Caulfield's earliest residences, having been built around 1854. Samuel was a business partner of William Kerr Thomson, a well-known Brighton resident and the original occupant of the North Road mansion 'Kamesburgh'. During her time with the Renwick family, Annie travelled with them to England, then to Scotland, then back to Victoria. She left the family upon the marriage of the youngest Renwick daughter, then went to the household of Sir William and Lady McCullough until she left to be married to Alfred John Ashfold in 1878.This c1872 grey and white silk pin stripe dress features a high round neckline with eleven decorative blue silk buttons and secured by a concealed line of fifteen hook and eyelet closure. The bodice (.1) has decorative blue and green braid over the shoulder and bust and across the base of the bodice. The dress features three darts shaping the dress to the body. The sleeve is cut high but relatively full and tapers to the elbow then flares again in Pagoda like style but ends at the wrist or hand. The skirt (.2) opens over the left hip and features a pocket over the right hip. The skirt at the front finishes at the ankle or just above the ground. At the back the bodice features panels shaping the dress into the body and pleated and flared from the waist. At the small of the back is a decorative bow with pinked edges and decorative braid. The skirt at the back is uncommon in shape most likely as the result of modification. It appears to have had panels removed reducing its original fullness. It has a tape inside the back of the skirt that would draw the skirt in creating a bustle like shape . It would appear that the dress had been modified in order to create a more fashionable silhouette most probably in circa 1872. There are three separate pieces of fabric. One is made up into a semi-circular over-skirt trimmed with blue braid and fringing (.3). Two pieces are unpicked skirt gores, one still has its cotton lining attached (.4 and .5).annie elizabeth mclean, samuel renwick, the garrell, caulfield -

Document - Citizen Identity Cards World War II, Australian Federal Government, 1940s
These cards were issued during World War 11 to British subjects who were civilians. This included all non-indigenous adults born in Australia. The concept of Australian citizenship was only introduced by the Nationality and Citizenship Act of 1948. All adults had personal identity cards and were required to report changes of address to the government. These cards were particularly important in the identification and monitoring of Aliens (non-citizen residents) , particularly non-Europeans and Asian residents.Peter Frawley was a long-time resident of Wodonga. He was a veteran of Gallipoli and Fromelles. For his actions at Fromelles, he was awarded the French Croix de Guerre. After the war Peter became a successful jockey and one of his greatest successes was winning the Australian Steeple Chase at Caulfield in 1922. He was an active member of the Wodonga Turf Club and Bonegilla Race Club and a founding member of the Wodonga Show Society. Peter’s wife Connie was an integral member of the Wodonga Hospital fundraising committee, being awarded a life membership. Nereida Pearl Goyne (nee Emery) lived most of her life in Wodonga. She was actively engaged in the community until 2007 when she moved to Rutherglen where she passed away in January 2009.3 fawn coloured cards with black text, all stamped with the Beechworth Post Office stamp. Papers - History of the Shire of Bright taking over Mt Beauty from the State Electricity Commission of Victoria
Mt Beauty township was built as a construction town by the SECV for their workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. In Oct. 1957 the Bright Shire agreed to take over the running of the town At the time it was thought that the section of 'North Mt Beauty ' would disappear. By 1961 and again in 1975, the Shire was still struggling with money for administration and maintenance of the town, including the 'sub-standard' homes in North Mt Beauty. The papers state the agreements made over the years from 1957 to 1975 in order to come to a new agreement.Correspondence between the SEC and the Bright Shire in 1975 confirms that the Shire was struggling to maintain the high standard with increased costs, set by the SEC during construction. "Mt Beauty provides less income to the Shire and offers a poor medium for the reception of grants and CRB assistance'. The papers state the agreements made over the years from 1957 to 1975 with negotiations for a new agreement. This still seems to be a problem in 2021 - a second rate town compared to Bright which makes more money and gets more facilities.A variety of foolscap size papers bound by a rusty fastener. Includes letters re Municipal Administration of Mt Beauty township since the A few pages are hand written.mt beauty township, bright shire, municipal administration of mt beauty, alex mccullough -

The papers were compiled by him during his research for his book. The history of Mt Beauty is interesting as the town was unique as it was built by the SECV for their employees working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The histories of the clubs are an example of their development from the 1950s in a remote country town, giving an insight into the lives of the people living there. Paper Records for Mt Beauty & District Meals On Wheels, 1960s - 2003
Mt Beauty & District Meals on Wheels committee was formed on 6th Dec. 1967, possibly under the Elderly Citizens Welfare Council News (or Senior Citizens Mt Beauty) with service commencing on 16th July 1968. Volunteers transported meals from the Hospital Kitchen to the elderly and sick members of the community each day including weekends. Eventually the Shire managed the meals and roster until recent times when, in 2016, Alpine Health took over. Members of the Mt Beauty community recognised the need for meals to be delivered to the elderly and sick. They formed a committee and organised the means (rules, meals, containers, roster ) by which they could achieve their goal with volunteers and the Tawonga District Hospital. The first delivery was recorded by the press and was on film by AMV 4 Albury TV station for their local news. The official party included - local member, Tom Mitchell, Shire representatives, Alec McCullough and Dr Jean Hutching who joined the volunteers for a luncheon at the Mt Beauty Chalet.Paper records for the Mt Beauty Meals On Wheels Program includes photos, newspaper cuttings, committee documents, roster, petrol book, minute books 1983 - 1998, correspondence book, stationary and a brief history of the first delivery in 1968.meals on wheels; mt beauty; tawonga district hospital; -
