Alex McCullough was a resident of Mt Beauty for many years and wrote a book on the History of Mt Beauty. Mt Beauty was constructed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria to house employees working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Alex was involved with many organisations in Mt Beauty and interested in history. He took many photos of events and new developments in town. The Kiewa Hydro Workmen's Club was established in 1948. It was a recreational facility for the men working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The Kiewa Hydro Workmen's Club was established firstly as a shop by the SECV during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. It became a Club to enable members to purchase and consume liquor on the premises. The Mt Beauty Progress Association was an important community service group that raised an enormous amount of money to buy equipment etc. for local community activities ie. kinder, schools etc. It supported the community with projects and events. This newspaper article was produced at a time when newspapers were the main source of local information. The period before the explosion of mobile communication technology and the cost effectiveness of communication by "texting" and internet "social connections, eg. facebook and other social media networkings" The newspapers were the main links between and within large regions. The Hydro Courier was first printed in 1950 as a YMCA community service publication by Mr. Albert Clarke YMCA Officer and Mr. Alex McCullough a State Electricity Commission employee. This paper was one very important publication that provided relevant community information to all and was the major contributer to the "Valley" cohesive fibre and unity. This article not only records the celebration (centenary) of the Tawonga School but also presents the history of the school and important events such as various relocations of classrooms and how the region was settled and developed from the 1870's onward. The yawonga school opened in 1880 on 8 acres of land. It consisted of one large wooden building (22 ft x 11 ft). It had two windows, one brick chimney, bare wooden floor and a shingle roof. This article also presents the time when Mount Beauty area was likened to an island and occasionally school children could not attend school because of a flooded Kiewa river. The article also covers the changes brought about by the increased employment opportunities from SEC Kiewa Works(1935), the Sawmill(1946), the Gold mine(1949) and the Tobacco Industry (largest growing area in Australia).This item is a one page (original) article of the centenary celebrations for Tawonga Primary School came from the Alpine Observer and incorporated the Hydro Courier. The Athletics Club under the guidance of a committee of workers, which included Mr Stan Hemmings and Mr Alex McCullough, sponsored a Junior Athletics Club which became the Gra-Y Club for young boys and HY-Y for older lads. Mr A E Clark (YMCA) had the idea of adopting the American Gra-Y System which was to instil in the boys good principles and values similar to those of the service clubs i.e. YMCA, the Masons and Buffalo Lodge. Story has it that the town was virtually crime free for many years. The Athletics Club became a very powerful force in Mount Beauty and assisted other fledgling groups to get started. The committee had the bright idea that they could raise money and entertain the men who lived in the outlying camps by running sporting exhibitions by their members and the Gra-Y boys for entertainment.It is a connection to the early history of Mount Beauty regarding the start of an athletics club and the activities of the town.Wooden shield with metal 'ribbon' shaped engraved heading below which are 25 small (of varying sizes) metal shields each engraved with the winner's name, group and date. The Community Centre was built in the early 1950’s as an all-purpose hall for the social and recreational use of the workers and families employed on the Victorian state government Kiewa Hydro-electric scheme. The hall was originally called Mt Beauty Recreation Centre and later changed to Mt Beauty Community Centre. It has been the heart of the community for over 65 years and had a heritage listing put on it around the year 2000. The Alpine Shire secured a heritage grant and the hall was restored to its former glory in 2000.
