Jean Hanna was one of a group of old collegians who presented a book containing the names of eighty former students who served World War II to Presbyterian Ladies College, Burwood. Jean, 93, had seen war firsthand, working twelve hour shifts in tent hospitals, nursing sick, wounded, amputees and POW's. By 1937 Jean was the sister-in-charge of the Alfred Hospital's operating theatre and after a European tour where she witnessed Germany arming, displaying swastikas everywhere and restricting movement in and out of Germany, Jean registered with the Australian Nursing Service and were called up. April 1940 saw Jean amoung the first Victorian nursing sisters to go overseas. Jean nursed in tent hospitals in Gaza, Mersa Matruh, Nazareth and Colombo before heading home to Australia to nurse sick and wounded from New Guinea. In April 1945 Jean went to another tent hospital in Borneo, where she cared for civilians and POW's, including a survivor of the Sandakan death march. Discharged in 1946, Jean joined the Alfred Hospital again until her retirement in 1962. A newspaper clipping of a story of five columns of text beneath two black and white photos. Research by project volunteer Ernie Ward: Alfred Hospital nurses enjoy their Christmas Lunch: The hierarchical system of Nursing and Nurse Training (as indicated by the headwear, armbands and seating positions) is on full display as Alfred Hospital nurses propose a Christmas Lunch toast (strictly non-alcoholic) to The Age photographer, Hugh Bull. Some of the bolder nurses have decorated their headwear in a festive way that would be frowned upon the other 364 days of the year. The soft drinks are Marchants and Elliotts, the flower arrangements feature the highly fashionable gladioli, and the floral patterned curtains have been pulled aside so the summer sunshine can stream in. The sunshine would, in a couple of hours, be replaced by flooding rainstorms which caused havoc on Christmas night. This very Melbourne weather phenomenon was the focus of The Age Boxing Day edition pictorial. At the rear of the room is Matron Grace Wilson C.B.E, already a World War One heroine for setting up and working at Australian military hospitals in Greece, Egypt and France (as seen on the second episode of the 2014 television series Anzac Girls). As Australia’s most highly-ranked peacetime military nurse, Matron Wilson also appears as the only woman in any official capacity at the Dedication of the Shrine of Remembrance in 1934. Printout of powerpoint presentation given by Helen Hamilton, President of the Alfred Hospital Nurses League, at the Alfred Hospital August 15, 2018, under the auspices of the Alfred Hospital heritage Committee. Haldan Turriff was the first matron of the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne. Haldane was one of a group of nurses under the leadership of Lucy Osburn who had arrived in Sydney in 1868, following a request from Henry Parkes (at the time Colonial Secretary of NSW) to Florence Nightingale for help to improve the standard of nursing in Sydney. Two weeks after their arrival their was an assasination attemt on HRH Prince Alfred. Haldane was one of two nurses chosen to care for him. The Alfred Hosital, which opened in 1871, was named after him and Haldane Turiff became the first matron.
