James came to Australia from Plymouth on the ship "Mobile" arriving 16/11/1853 aged 22. he married Alice Roberts on November 27, 1861. With a large young family he moved from Central Victoria to Glengarry in Gippsland where he farmed and set up sawmills at Glengarry and Rosedale. After hearing of land grants at Orbost and investigating the possibilities with Elizabeth, his eldest daughter he selected land at Pumpkin Point, Bete Bolong. The whole family (ten children from 23years - 2years) eventually moved to Orbost around 1885. ( read "From White Knowle to Pumpkin Point" by Hon Peter Nixon A.O.) He had the first saw mill. He convened the meeting that established butter factory foundation and shares and was the first Agricultural Show president,James Nixon was a significant and influential citizen of Orbost's early years.Portrait done in oils of Nixon, James Mr. The portrait is of the bust of Nixon in a tuxedo with blue to grey background. William Nixon, son of James Nixon and Alice (Roberts) Nixon was married to Ilma Muriel (Cadwallader) Nixon on 2 Apr 1902 in Orbost. They had six children - Llewella Adele (Nixon) King, Sydney William Columbo Nixon, Arthur Harry Nixon, Jack Warton Nixon, Claudine Frances (Nixon) Taylor and Daphne Joyce (Nixon) Menz Damage estimated at £500,000 was caused by the 1934 floods in the Orbost district. This 1934 flood was devastating, destroying a section of the 1922 Orbost bridge, wrecking fences, bridges and roads, dumping silt and debris on the rich river flats and drowning cattle. Note: although this card has the date 1934 written onto the rear, the flood incident depicted most likely dates from 1920 (ref. Weekly Times, Saturday 6 March 1920 p 41 when this photo was printed).This item is a pictorial record of a flood in 1920 (ref. Weekly Times, Saturday 6 March 1920 p41). This photograph is of Percy Nixon, son of James Nixon and Alice Roberts Percy Nixon married Evelyn Harding. The photographer was Warren, Helena (1871-1962) who was a self-taught photographer who became both the local press correspondent and a producer of humorous trompe l'oeil postcard images. Helena Warren was a thirty-two year old settler living on a small mixed farm with her husband, William, at Newmerella, near Orbost in Gippsland, Victoria, when she bought her first camera, an Austral Box quarter-plate. Her family says she was entirely self-taught, like many women photographers who started out with nothing but the instructions on the packets of film and chemicals. In over fifty years practice she graduated from the total novice, who opened all her first mail order plates in bright sunlight and ruined them, to a competent photographer who became both the local press correspondent and an inveterate producer of humorous trompe l’oeil postcard images. Helena Francis Warren (nee McKeown) was married to William John Warren and lived in Newmerella. She supplied the photos for the Back-To-Orbost celebration book in 1937 and also designed the Back-To-Orbost badge. She was known for her soft toy making. George Nixon was the son of James and Alice Nixon. The Nixon families were among the earliest settlers on the Snowy River. The late Mr. Nink has lived in the district practically all his life and died at the home formerly occupied by his father; Some years ago he conducted a peach orchard, which was one of the sights of Queenstown. He was recently engaged in mining at One Tree Hill with Mr. Otto Muller. He took an active part in public affairs, and was a trustee of the mechanics' institute, recreation ground and cemetery trust. He had a happy disposition, was very hospitable and always merry, which made for him friends all over the district. He leaves a wife, and was the father of Alice (Mrs. Christian), Charles, Robert, William and Minnie (deceased); and the brother of Joseph: (deceased), Henry, Johanna (Mrs. Tonge), Frederick, Mary (Mrs. Antonie) and Robert. His relatives have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their sad bereavement. The remains of deceased yere interred in Smith's Gully cemetery on Wednesday, and his popularity was shown by the large cortege, amongst the mourners being ex-Cr. Zerbe !(Doncaster), Messrs. Carlyle. Exton, Harris (Kinglake), Birch (Christmas Hills), P. J. McMahon (shire secretary), Crs. Hewitt and Ryan (North Riding), and Cr. D. Murphy (Whittlesea shire). The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Father Lande (Diamond Creek), and the funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Robert M. Serjeant was the only son of Theo and Alice Serjeant, and grandson of famed mine manager Robert Malachy Serjeant (1829-1902). Robert Serjeant was a past student of the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB), and at the time of his World War One enlistment he had just finished an electrical course, and was working as a junior member of the SMB Department of Electricity. Robert Serjeant enlisted in December 1914. Corporal Serjeant (2138) of the 8th Battalion, died of wounds received in action at Gallipoli on 28 April 1915, aged 20. He was buried at sea and his name is listed at the Lone Pine Memorial. A brown paper parcel of Robert Serjeant's belongings was returned to his parents. It contained his discs, wrist-watch (damaged), notebook, hymn book and letters. [1] The Ballarat Courier reported: 'He was of quiet disposition, and a great student, devoting himself closely to his work.' Further information on R.M. Serjeant can be found at https://bih.federation.edu.au/index.php/Robert_M._Serjeant_Jnr The following statement on the ANZAC Commemorative Medallion and Badge was made by by Prime Minister Holt in 16 March 1967 when the Minister for Defence announced that it had been decided by the Australian Government, in consultation with the New Zealand Government, to issue a medallion and lapel badge to the veterans of the Gallipoli Campaign. "Last March, the Minister for Defence announced that it had been decided by the Australian Government, in consultation with the New Zealand Government, to issue a medallion and lapel badge to the veterans of the Gallipoli Campaign. I am glad to be able to announce that arrangements have now been completed for the production of the medallion and the badge. The Minister for the Army will be arranging distribution to those wishing to receive them as soon as possible. The Government hopes that production of the medallion and lapel badge will be sufficiently advanced to permit at least some of them to be distributed by ANZAC Day. The medallion (with the name of the recipient inscribed) will be issued to the surviving members of the Australian Defence Force who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula, or in direct support of the operations from close off-shore, at any time during the period from the first ANZAC Day in April, 1915 to the date of final evacuation in January, 1916. Next of kin or other entitled persons will be entitled to receive the medallion on behalf of their relatives, if the relative died on active service or has since died. For surviving members, a lapel badge will also be available for wearing. This will be a replica of the obverse (or front) of the medallion and will be about 1 inch high and 2/3 inch wide - the same size as the RSL badge. The medallion is the work of Mr. Raymond Ewers, the well-known Australian artist, based on a suggestion by Mr. Eric Garrett, a staff artist with the Department of the Army. It has been endorsed by both the Government of New Zealand and ourselves. It will be approximately 3 inches high and 2 inches wide. The obverse of the medallion depicts Simpson and his donkey carrying a wounded soldier to safety. It will be bordered on the lower half by a laurel wreath above the word ANZAC. The reverse (the back) shows a relief map of Australian and New Zealand superimposed by the Southern Cross. The lower half will be bordered by New Zealand fern leaves. The medallion will be cast in bronze and the lapel badge will be metal of a bronze colour. All members of the Australian Defence Force who served during the Gallipoli Campaign are entitled to receive the ANZAC Commemorative medallion. The campaign lasted from April 25, 1915 to January 8, 1916. The award will be made for service on the Gallipoli Peninsula and service in support of the operations in an area off-shore eastward of a line drawn from Yukyeri Point (lat 39 50' 40'' N long 26 9' 45'' E) through a point in lat 39 53' N long 26 0' E thence to Cape Gremea (lat 40 35' N long 26 6' E). Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders in the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. When VIOSH first began in 1979, Max and Dulcie Brooke were members of Staff at Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education and became part of the initial group in presenting the course. In the early 1990s, Max became ill and Dulcie retired to care for him. Max died in 1992 and Dulcie established the Max Brooke Memorial Shield in his memory. This was presented by Dulcie to the winner of the Award at the Presentation Dinner every year from 1993 to 2010. Alec Cameron was one of the young boys in this photograph. He was the son of Robert Pullar Cameron who was an early settler on the Orbost flats. Alec, (like his sisters, Flora and Penuel) had a beautiful singing voice. He married Annie Nixon and had children, Frank, Wilfred, Dorothy, Alice, Edie and Isobel.This item is a pictorial record of the social life of young people in Orbost in the first half of the 20th century. He came from a family who were early pioneers of Ringwood. he was born in Collingwood but schooled in Ringwood, married and brought up his family in Ringwood. He lived at 18, Wantirna Road .The article was contributed by J.K.McCaskill, JP. a mayor of Ringwood in the years between 1924-1951.Transcript: "The death occurred of Joseph Richard Sanders, 18 Wantirna Rd, Ringwood, on Wednesday, 21st October 1959, in his 87th year, marks the passing of another of Ringwood’s early pioneers. He was born in Collingwood in August 1873 and came to Ringwood with his parents when 15 months old. They made their home on land on what is now known as Jubilee Park (Fuller particulars of this Park will appear in ‘The Mail’ at a later date, also reference will be made to Wantirna Rd, in the early days it was known as West Prussia Rd). Joe went to the school held in the old homestead and orchard of Mr. Mills, just through the Heatherdale Road railway gates. He remembered many of the scholars, some of the boys and girls had to walk three and four miles to school through rough scrub paddocks in all kinds of weather. During the lunch hour a few of the boys generally went to the creek to fish for eels and would be late in getting back to school, greatly to the annoyance of the teacher. One day the fishing was good, and the boys rather reluctantly returned to the school late as usual. The teacher was furious and made them stand in front of the class but before inflicting punishment she called out to one of the boys to throw out that dirty bag he was holding. The lad gave the bag a shake and out wriggled a snake. There was immediately a general stampede from the classroom, led by the teacher. The school was closed for the rest of the afternoon. Another incident related to a few tramps who after the scholars had all gone home, generally camped for the night in an old back room in the homestead. One of the boys put a little gunpowder in this old fireplace and when the tramps lit the fire to boil their billies the old chimney and part of the old wall just collapsed. Joe, after leaving school, worked around the district for some time and later left Ringwood to live in other suburbs. He at one time was employed at the Aust Glass Works, and later as a carpenter worked on building the dome of the Railway Station at Flinders St. He married a Miss E. M. Wood in 1901 at Richmond and a few years afterwards returned to Ringwood and resided at No. 18 Wantirna Rd., where he reared a family' of three girls (Alice, Ethel, Joyce) and two boys (Robert and Joe). Joe recalled many interesting events of earlier years, such as the duplication of the railway line, and the cutting back of the embankment at the Goods Shed, the earth being used to heighten up the railway bridge over Wantirna Rd. The brickworks at Ringwood East and reference to early land surveys, the using of the heavy chain links before the use of the theodolite became general, and the many neighbours and friends whom he knew. He was interested in local public affairs and was fond of fishing. He proved himself a good citizen and was highly respected and esteemed throughout the district, and so another old pioneer passes on." (Contributed by J. K. McCaskill, J.P.) RM 19 Nov 1959

Finalist Robert Klein-Boonschate in the ANL Maritime Art Prize 2003 Biography: (https://www.artpartners.com.au/robert-kleinboonschate/) Born in The Netherlands, Robert migrated to Tallangatta, Australia with his family in 1971. Robert completed a degree in Graphic Art at Swinburne College and settled into Melbourne for the next seven years as a professional artist and art facilitator. Robert moved to Mparntwe (Alice Springs) in the 1980’s where he worked closely with Arrernte Peoples for the next 12 years. Robert’s beautiful landscapes reflect the influence of Arrernte artist Albert Namatjira and his love of the Australian landscape reflects his experiences with the Arrernte Peoples and their connection to ‘Country’. Robert opened the art studio located at his home in Alice Springs to Arrernte, Luritja, Warlpiri & Pintupi artists and worked alongside such artists as Johnny Warrangkula Tjupurrula. Robert helped to facilitate Johnny’s later body of work by constructing special brushes which could be used by Johnny after breaking his wrist.
