... Stone Villa house 4 Bennett Street Bacchus Marsh 1883 ...The house depicted in this image was constructed in 1865 for James Young a prominent local businessman and participant in community affairs. James Young left Bacchus Marsh in 1869. In 1870 Stone Villa was purchased by local solicitor Francis Gell. In 1872 it was bought by William Collyer. For a time before 1883 it was used as a school operated by Mr Thomas Kissock and his wife. From 1883 until 1922 it was used as a parsonage by the Church of England. In 1922 it was sold to Frederick Slack as a private residence. Since Slack's ownership there have been other owners. As of April 2024 it remains as a private residence and listed as a heritage property in the Moorabool Shire planning scheme. The identity of the two women and young girl in the foreground of the image has not been established. One of the women, and the child are possibly the wife and daughter of the Rev A.C. McCausland who was the Church of England Vicar in Bacchus Marsh from 1872 until 1885 and would have resided in this house in 1883 when this picture was produced. An early visual record of one of the most culturally and architecturally significant nineteenth century stone houses in Bacchus Marsh.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Photograph, Delegates 1913 Bacchus Marsh District Football Association
... Delegates 1913 Bacchus Marsh District Football Association ...Australian Rules football had been played in the Bacchus Marsh area from at least the 1870s. The first meeting to form a club was held in Bacchus Marsh in 1874 but it was not until the 1880s that regular matches were played in the district. In 1912 it was decided by representatives from a number of football clubs in the district to form a football association to better organize and promote the development of the game in the district. Hence by 25 May 1912 the Bacchus Marsh District Football Association was formed comprising the following clubs: Bacchus Marsh, Deer Park, Melton, Parwan, and Maddingley. This image shows the delegates from the various clubs to the newly formed association. The individual people in the image have been specifically identified but the clubs they represented have not. The unnamed umpires in the image have been identified by the honorary historian and statistician of the Australian Football League Umpires Association, David Flegg. Left, Fred Lucas (Goal Umpire), centre, Evan James (Field Umpire), and right, James Smith (Goal Umpire). The date of this image is 9th August 1913. Newspaper reports in the Bacchus Marsh Express on 9th August confirm the participation of these umpires in a Bacchus Marsh versus Melton match on this date. The match took place at Maddingley Park, which appears to be the location where the picture was taken. This item has historic and social significance as an image of one of the early sporting administrators of Bacchus Marsh and District. It is a typical example of group photographs of this era. It is evidence of the transition of football from a social informal setting to an organised activity and signals the growth of importance of sport, in this case Australian Rules football, as a cultural and social activity central to the Australian ethos. It reflects the pride local districts invested in their local sporting clubs. A sepia photograph mounted on a cardboard mat, showing a group of sixteen men arranged in three rows in a park setting. Twelve men are dressed in suits, collars and ties, a thirteenth man is wearing a uniform coat with epaulettes. Several of the men are wearing ribbons which may indicate their membership of the Association, and/or their status as delegates. In the front row, three men are crouched, two wearing white coats over their suits, and holding white flags, denoting their role as goal umpires. The middle man, the field umpire, is wearing long-sleeved top, shorts, socks and laced-up athletic shoes. On the front, under the photo, hand-written, the words: Delegates 1913. Bacchus Marsh District Football Association. Beneath the title: Top Frank Winderlich. H Connors (s deleted). G.Coburn. P. McDonald. McKenzie? Grant Morton. Edgar Smith. Mid: Roy Edwards. J.J.Barry Snr. Ross. Robert Dugdale. Cunningham. J.B. Doherty. Bottom Row. Not inscribed but have been identified as VFL accredited umpires. Photograph, Football Match at Maddingley Park Bacchus Marsh 1900s
... Football Match at Maddingley Park Bacchus Marsh 1900s ...This photo is a very early example of an action image from an Australian Rules football match in a rural area in Victoria. The identity of the two teams is not confirmed. The team with the dark colored uniform is probably the Bacchus Marsh football team. The other team is possibly Parwan. The style of uniforms suggest the date of the photo is from around 1910 or possibly a few years earlier. This item has particular historic and social significance as an action image of two of the early sporting teams of Bacchus Marsh and district. These type of images are very rare for teams outside of the major metropolitan competitions such as the Victorian Football League of Victorian Football Association. It therefore provides a rare and fascinating depiction of an early football game as it was played and the ground conditions in which footballers played in the early 1900s.A black and white photograph produced from a digitized glass negative held by the State Library of Victoria titled, ‘Men and boys playing football on an oval set among trees and fields’ ca. 1910, Pictures Collection, State Library Victoria, H92.433/20. The description for the image held by the State Library of Victoria does not identify the location where the image was taken. By close comparison with other images of Maddingley Park held by the Bacchus Marsh and District Historical Society the location has been identified as Maddingley Park, Bacchus Marsh. A significant identifier for this image is the presence of the Evans Pavilion in the background which was built in 1896. Trees and statues in the background on the left side of the image also match other images of Maddingley Park from this time.australian rules football, bacchus marsh football club, australian rules football action images -

Photograph, Hall of Commerce, corner Main and Graham Streets, Bacchus Marsh. 1883
... Hall of Commerce, corner Main and Graham Streets, Bacchus ...Bacchus Marsh Express of 7 November 1874 reports that this building was designed and erected by Mr Jeremiah Ryan for Mr H. G. Salter, draper. Mr Salter gave the name of "Hall of Commerce" to the building, a term in common usage at the time. The building was of a substantial size. In the Express of January 4 1879 Messrs Basham and Bradley advertised a wide variety of goods including drapery, millinery, ready-made clothing, boots and shoes and furniture. At the front of the building was the first pavement in the township. This photo forms a contrast with the photograph (also taken by Stevenson & McNicoll in 1883) of Timmons Clothier and Draper, but depicting an older building from 1857. This business was on the verge of closure, Mr Timmons conducting his business as a travelling salesman, taking his goods by horse and cart to outlying districts. The image provides an example of the growing scale of retail development in Bacchus Marsh in the late nineteenth century. This photograph is a record of a prominent commercial building that has undergone substantial change. The image shows the original upper floor which was destroyed by fire in 1928.The building retains its usage as a commercial premises.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Book, John Lloyd, The Road District Years, 1853-1871: Local Government in Bacchus Marsh
... Bacchus Marsh ...This work describes the early evolution and history of local government in the Bacchus Marsh area. Local government bodies in Victoria and in other places had their origins in committees and local boards which were established to regulate over pressing local issues, raise revenue, and expend it in a limited range of social and economic ways. The early areas of responsibility were dominated by the need for local roads and this book primarily looks at this period of local government history in the Bacchus Marsh area. Overtime the range of areas local government bodies took responsibility for expanded and this work begins to trace this transformation in its earliest stages. It is a fascinating and detailed account of the early history of local government in Bacchus Marsh containing many amusing anecdotes among the wealth of administrative historical data. The author who was at one time an employee of the Shire of Bacchus Marsh has drawn directly from the early local records such as minutes of meetings, records of expenditure, newspaper reports and notices in the Victoria Government Gazette.Soft cover foolscap size book. 128 pages with b & w illustrations, maps and plans. No publisher is indicated in the work but it is likely to have been privately published by the author John Lloyd. Photograph, Bacchus Marsh Football Club Premiers, 1912
... Bacchus Marsh Football Club Premiers ...This photo is one of the oldest known photographic records of an Australian Rules football team in the Bacchus Marsh area. Australian Rules football was played in this area as early as the 1870s. An organized competition to play regular matches was formed in the early years of the twentieth century. This photo records the premiership winning team of 1912 in the match played against Melton. The match was reported in the Bacchus Marsh Express of 31 August 1912. The names of the players are not recorded on this photo, but the Express records the names of Marsh, Fairbank, Northcott, Palmer, Roy Simpson, Morris, Tom Grant, Jack Taylor, Bert Jones, Portingale (c.), Densley Bros., Wittick, Harry Grant, Leonard, Odgers, Bodycote. This item has historic and social significance as an image of one of the early sporting teams of Bacchus Marsh and district. ... Broadlands Estate, Bacchus Marsh ...This land sales map was produced by real estate agents for an auction of part of a property near Bacchus Marsh known as the Broadlands Estate. 132 acres of irrigated land in 11 separate lots was to be auctioned on the 8th of June 1916. On the 27 May 1916, nine of the 11 eleven lots were withdrawn from sale. The reason stated was due to "road and severance difficulties", according to a notice in the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper on 27 May, 1916, page.2. When the sale took place on 8th June the two lots were passed in but the local newspaper reported they were expected to be sold privately, see Express, 17 June, 1916, page. 2. The Broadlands Estate was owned by the Miller family whose father Henry Miller, 1809-1888, was a politician and an immensely wealthy financier in Victoria.A typical example of a land sale map of this era. Edgar Gordon Morris was a prominent sportsman in Bacchus Marsh from around 1909 to 1918. He was regarded as the best all-round cricketer in the district and was also Secretary of the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association. He was also a playing member of local football and tennis clubs. From about 1919 to 1921 Morris had been living in Swan Hill. His death at the age of 35 was reported in the Bacchus Marsh Express on the 5th March 1921 and was received with great sadness in sporting circles in Bacchus Marsh and district. To perpetuate his memory a shield to be presented to the premiership team each season in the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association. The E.G. MOrris Shield was first presented for the 1921-1922 season. This item is of historical significance because it is associated with a particular person, Edgar Morris, a prominent sportsman and sports administrator in the Bacchus Marsh area. It is of comparative significance because it is representative of a shield design for a perpetual sporting trophy. The Shield also provides some research value by preserving and commemorating the memory of a prominent individual sports person in the Bacchus Marsh area.A silver plated shield created to perpetuate the memory of E. G. Morris. Enclosed inside a timber frame and sealed with a glass top. The shield is ringed by smaller shields with inscriptions identifying the premiership winning teams in the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association between 1921 and 1930.The E. G.
