Allan Arnup was born in Bacchus Marsh in 1913. In 1929 he began work at the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper as an apprentice printer. Over several decades he worked there as a printer, foreman and eventually as a manager. The Express newspaper, founded in 1866, was printed in Bacchus Marsh for over 100 years. The Express also provided a general printing service for the community in addition to printing copies of the Express newspaper. This unpublished manuscript was written around 1990 and looks back on Arnup's long career as a printer and manager with the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper and printing business.Manuscript. The Bacchus Marsh Express was a weekly newspaper first published in July 1866. It was produced in the Victorian town of Bacchus Marsh and was distributed in that township and the surrounding district. The original title was "The Bacchus Marsh Express : and General Advertiser for Ballan, Melton, Myrniong, Blackwood, Gisborne, Egerton and Gordon Districts". There were numerous variations to the name of this newspaper over the next 100 years but it usually retained the word 'Express' as part of its title. In September 2010 the word Express disappeared from the title and it became known as the Moorabool Weekly which then merged with some other newspapers over the next few years. For over 100 years the Crisp family owned or were associated with the production of the Express. By 22 February 1984 Syme Community Newspapers had taken over the Express. This entity was later renamed Fairfax Community Newspapers and continued to publish the Express until the disappearance of the name 'Express' altogether at the begining of September 2010. The last issue with the word 'Express' in the title being published on 31 August 2010.This is the first local Bacchus Marsh newspaper that continued to be published over a significant period of time. After beginning July 1866 it continued to be published weekly until the last issue on the 31 August 2010 was published. Nearly all published editions of the Express have been preserved. Issues No.1 and No.2, 7 and 14 July are not extant. The earliest known issue in existence is No.3, 21 July, 1866. "Donald Mackintosh was born in Rockbank on 21 September 1866. He quickly proved himself as an expert shot, joining the Bacchus Marsh Shooting Club at the age of ten and the Melbourne Gun Club at 23. In 1890 he won the Melbourne Gun Club £1000 Cup Handicap. Donald represented Australia at the 1900 Paris Olympic Games. However, due to confusion at the time over whether this competition was an official Olympic event, Donald was not recognised as an Olympic medallist during his lifetime. In 1987 the IOC issued Donald’s gold and bronze medals. Donald continued to travel around Europe and won many other competitions, including the London Gun Club Challenge Cup three times in a row and the Grand Prix at Monte Carlo twice. As well as being an expert shot, Donald was also well educated and wrote poetry. The Express newspaper was founded in Bacchus Marsh in 1866. From 1870 it was produced in this two-storey building in Church Street Bacchus Marsh. The first issue was published on Saturday 7th July 1866. The first issues of the Express were produced in the house of its proprietor George Lane. This house can be seen at the rear of the two-storey building in this image. Around 1889 the size of the building was doubled. The Express was initially started and operated by a syndicate of local businessmen. After only a few months the syndicate ceased and George Lane a printer and his future son-in-law Christopher Crisp took over the ownership and operation of the Express. The Crisp family were associated with the Express for over 100 years. It was both a newspaper and printing business. The Express building was in use as a newspaper and printing business until the early 1980s. Since the 1980s the building has been used for a variety of retail and commercial purposes. The original printing equipment used by the Express is still present in the building and the site has been listed as a site of state heritage significance on the Victorian Heritage Register.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. The date of this map or plan is uncertain but it appears to be from the early to mid 1870s. One of the landholders identified on the plan, James Allan of Coimadai died suddenly on the 9th July, 1874 (see Bacchus Marsh Express, 11 July, 1874, page. 3). The former Christopher Crisp residence was constructed in 1868 by William Watson, one of the members of the Bacchus Marsh Express printing company which took over the management of The Express after the first edition, 7 July 1866, was published by its founder, George Lane, a book binder. This syndicate failed after three months and the ownership was then taken over by Christopher Crisp, a compositor working for the company. Crisp remained the editor from 1866 to his death in 1915, when he was succeeded by his son, also called Christopher Crisp, and later by his grandson. Under the Crisp family leadership, The Express widened its readership and was subscribed to by influential men and public servants in Melbourne. (Heritage Victoria Council. Places. Standing at the gate is a formally dressed gentleman wearing a top hat. A young child is standing on the road. This child is possibly Christopher Crisp, Jnr., who later took over the role of editor of the Bacchus Marsh Express in 1915 on the death of his father. This map was produced sometime around mid 1909 to advertise portions of land from the Greystones Estate for sale by public tender. The selling agents were Young Brothers of Horsham and L.A. Fairbairn of Bacchus Marsh and Melbourne. The seller was Molesworth R. Greene who was a pioneer pastoralist in the Bacchus Marsh area and had also acquired other properties in Victoria and interstate. Molesworth Greene died in 1916 so this sale came towards the end of his life. A total of 4,176 acres was offered for sale in multiple lots. Successful tenderers could buy single or multiple lots. The results of the sale were reported in the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper on the 16th October 1909, page 3. At the sale a total of 3, 420 acres was sold. A single page paper map showing portions of land for sale from the Greystones Estate near Bacchus Marsh. The map includes extensive details about the property, number of allotments for sale, terms and conditions of the sale and prices. The map includes an inserted reference map showing the location of the property in relation to Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat and Castlemaine. The top of the map appears to be missing resulting in some loss of the text. The sale notice in the Bacchus Marsh Express of 10 July, 1909, page 3, column 1 appears to duplicate the text overall in the auction plan. Based on this the missing text is likely to be: "Important Subdivisional Sale 'Of Portion of One of the Best and Most Favourably known Estates IN THE RENOWNED BACCHUS MARSH DISTRICT. And situated only six miles from that prosperous township, two miles from Rowsley, and three miles from Parwan, all Railway towns, connected with the Estate by metal roads." This map was one of a number of similar maps produced for advertising purposes by a company called, 'The Unique Advertising Combine'. The company was located in Melbourne on Queens Walk. A brief item in the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper on 29 March 1890 , page 2, indicated that subscribers to the Bacchus Marsh Express could obtain a copy of this map in the next issue of that newspaper. On the map is the detail that it was compiled by W.H. Bonney from official records supplied by D. A. Little, hire Secretary, (of Bacchus Marsh Shire).This map with its accompanying illustrations of local businesses and shops in Bacchus Marsh is an important documentary and visual snapshot of the town and district of Bacchus Marsh in the later part of the nineteenth century. The illustrations for some of the local businesses are the only known visual record of those particular buildings. The map is a rare surviving example of the material produced by The Unique Advertising Combine. Another similar example for the Shire of Mornington is held by the State Library of Victoria,A map of the Shire of Bacchus Marsh produced in March 1890. The map includes an inset detail section showing the central part of the township of Bacchus Marsh including the main shopping and business streets. In June 1903 some of the Friendly Societies in Bacchus Marsh formed an association to play Rope Quoits tournaments. The first tournament concluded after a series of matches in September 1903. The winners of the tournament were presented with a trophy in the form of an illuminated photographic portrait of the winning players. Reports of a Rope Quoits Association being formed for Friendly Societies members appeared in the Bacchus Marsh Express from 13 June 1903. Reports of the weekly tournaments subsequently appeared in the Express through June to September 1903. This plan was for the sale of parcels of land from the Lerderderg Park Estate property in 1911. Advertising for the sale appeared in the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper through July of 1911. The property was situated only a few kilometers from the township of Bacchus Marsh. The agents for the sale were L. A. Fairbairn & Co.Lerderderg Park Estate was a significant and early colonial property in the Bacchus Marsh area. This plan provides details about the first time the property was subdivided for sale. A branch of the Australian Natives Association (A.N.A.) was founded in Bacchus Marsh in 1889. In December 1904 the foundation stone for an ANA hall in Main Street Bacchus Marsh was laid. The ceremony was attended by Mr James Purves one of the founders of the ANA in Victoria. Road construction and planning was a primary function of the early local government authorities in rural and regional Victoria. This plan is indicative of the sort of documentation which generated considerable public interest and comment in rural communities. The date of this plan is not clear. Bacchus Marsh Express of 7 November 1874 reports that this building was designed and erected by Mr Jeremiah Ryan for Mr H. G. Salter, draper. Mr Salter gave the name of "Hall of Commerce" to the building, a term in common usage at the time. Following the fire of 1928 which destroyed the upper floor of the building, the ground floor was refurbished and new businesses set up. Among these were Percy Drury's Fruitery and Confectionery and Rogers' Bakery.This photograph is of the former Hall of Commerce, located on the corner of Main and Graham Streets. (For further information see VC729.) It shows the businesses operating in this building after the fire of 1928 which destroyed the upper floor. The streetscape shows a series of four businesses fronting Main Street. From L to R: G.H. Anderson. Store; Baker and Pastrycook; Confectioner and Fruiterer; The Central. Teas & Luncheons. On two awnings suspended from The Central name sign are the words "Teas & Luncheons" and "The Central". Outside the second shop can be seen various portable advertising signs, such as those used to advertise the latest news. One man reading a newspaper stands in front of this shop; five more men are ranged along the frontage, one wearing the apron commonly worn by greengrocers. Above the entrance to the tea rooms is the sign "CAFE". Other signs on the windows read "Dining Room", "Luncheons. Grills. Home Made Pies. Scones." On the corner of the shop is a two-sided sign reading " Home Made Pies, Cakes & Scones. Cool Drinks. Ice Cream." A delivery vehicle stands outside Anderson's store. Both pavement and street are made. This map shows an area of land north of Bacchus Marsh in the Larderderg State Park area known as the Parish of Coornmill.The map indicates an area of land which was to be made available by public tender for grazing leaseholders. The plan to do this was discussed in the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper on the 16 July, 1904, page 2, column 7. The area reserved for grazing leases is identified by red lines on the map. This map indicates portions of land in the Parish of Gorrockburkchap near Rowsley which was required for construction of a road. The land required was leased to a Michael Laffan. Other blocks of land nearby owned or leased by D. McPhail and J. Mahoney are also indicated on the map. The date of the map is not known. However newspaper reports in the Bacchus Marsh Express on the 18 March 1882, page 3, column 3 mention land occupied by McPhail and Laffan near Rowsley in connection to the construction of a public road.Single page map showing land occupied by farmers D. This image shows part of a street procession moving along Main Street Bacchus Marsh. The location is in front of the Mechanics Institute building. Two connected tricycles can be seen in the foreground. The Bacchus Marsh Express on 9 April 1904 described an ANA Sports day procession which included "two tricycles which were used for an ingenious travesty of a motor car". The same report also described two characters mounted on horses who were dressed as 'Beefeaters'. Beefeaters, are officially known as Yeomen Warders. They are the ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London in England. They originated in 1485 and the ceremonial style of dress most associated with them resembles that worn by the man on horseback in this image. The two Bacchus Marsh 'Beefeaters identified by the Express in 1904 were C. Fagg and P.A. McFarlane giving a clue to the identity of the man on horseback in this image. The style of people's clothing in the picture suggests it is from around the 1890s or 1900s, and the presence of the Tricycle suggests it could be 1904. The event associated with the street parade is not known for certain. But from descriptions in the Bacchus Marsh Express in the 1900s it appears it is part of the Bacchus Marsh branch of the Australian Natives Association (A.N.A,) annual sports festival which was held over the Easter period. This framed certificate was presented to J. G. Boyes in recognition for his many years of membership and service to the Bacchus Marsh Lodge of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows. The certificate was presented at a social evening held at the Bacchus Marsh Mechanics Hall on Saturday 10 September 1938. The social was held to mark the 70th anniversary of the Bacchus Marsh Lodge for the Grand United Order of Oddfellows. This small bowl was won by Alex Todd for marksmanship at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church Bazaar in Bacchus Marsh in 1935. It was described in the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper as a piece of Local Objet d'Art. The Express noted that it was 'made and donated to the Ladies' Guild by Mr. Walter Simon, of Bacchus Marsh. A local osage orange tree furnished the wood for the bowl, which was one of many articles that Mr. Simon's lathe has shaped from time to time, the grain of the osage timber being especially suitable for such work', Express, 25 May, 1935, p.2. This is a printed invitation for the Annual Reunion for the Presbyterian Church Bacchus Marsh. The Presbyterian church organised many social events in Bacchus Marsh. This particular event was promoted in the Bacchus Marsh Express in this way, "The Bacchus Marsh Presbyterian re union takes place on Friday, 16th inst, when a good programme is promised. Mr. C. Thompson, S.M., has been successful in securing a number of items from talented friends in Melbourne. Miss Alice Grant, and Miss Belle Morton, will be amongst the local performers. This image shows the Rutherford family at their property "Woodlands" near Bacchus Marsh. The bearded man to the right of the picture is probably Thomas Rutherford. The other people in the picture are probably members of his family. The Rutherford property was a dairy farm and was at one stage described as a 'model farm' by the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper. It was located near the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse heading towards Rowsley. It was also described as being near the Rowsley Station which was a small railway station a few kilometres south-west of Bacchus Marsh. The Rowsley Station existed from 1889 until replaced by a railway siding in 1959. The Melbourne photographers Stevenson & McNicoll visited the Bacchus Marsh district in 1883. They took photographs of many local families and individuals in front of their houses or businesses. More than 50 of these images were preserved by the Hawkins family of Bacchus Marsh and passed to a granddaughter of that family Mrs Beryl Jeremeas who donated those images to the Bacchus Marsh and District Historical Society in 1973. Stevenson & McNicoll are known to have taken numerous studio portrait photographs of Bacchus Marsh people. This was probably the larger part of their work. This image is said to be of the wedding of Margaret (Maggie) Isabel Dickie and Mr William Ernest Prosser taken outside the Baptist Chapel in Lerderderg Street Bacchus Marsh in March 1898. Maggie Dickie was the eldest daughter of a prominent Bacchus Marsh family. Her father George Dickie was a store owner and Shire of Bacchus Marsh Councillor. The groom, William Prosser was an employee of the Bacchus Marsh Post Office. The marriage ceremony was reported in detail in the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper of the 26 March 1898 where reference is made to two photographers who were waiting outside the church to take pictures. This store was built in 1881 and opened as a branch of Pearce Brothers main store which was further along in Main Street, Bacchus Marsh. The store in this image opened around early June 1881 and was described in the Bacchus Marsh Express as "quite above the usual standard of stores in towns of a similar or even much larger size. The building is most substantially built of brick, and measures 58 feet by 26 feet, with walls fourteen feet high inside. The interior is most elaborately fitted with shelves and glass cases covering both side walls and two ends formed by small offices separated from the main store by glass and wood panelled partitions, with a passage way between to the storeroom at the rear", Express, (Bacchus Marsh, 11 June, 1881, page 2). The building was designed by one of its proprietors T. G. This photo is one of the oldest known photographic records of an Australian Rules football team in the Bacchus Marsh area. Australian Rules football was played in this area as early as the 1870s. An organized competition to play regular matches was formed in the early years of the twentieth century. This photo records the premiership winning team of 1912 in the match played against Melton. The match was reported in the Bacchus Marsh Express of 31 August 1912. The names of the players are not recorded on this photo, but the Express records the names of Marsh, Fairbank, Northcott, Palmer, Roy Simpson, Morris, Tom Grant, Jack Taylor, Bert Jones, Portingale (c.), Densley Bros., Wittick, Harry Grant, Leonard, Odgers, Bodycote.This item has historic and social significance as an image of one of the early sporting teams of Bacchus Marsh and district. It is a typical example of team photographs of this era. John Simpson arrived in Bacchus Marsh around 1848. In 1850 he established a butchery business. He continued to operate this business in Main Street Bacchus Marsh until his death in 1890. His son John Simpson and one of his brothers, Edward took over the business and operated it until 1923. John Simpson the younger died in 1940 having lived all but a few months of his 92 years in Main Street Bacchus Marsh. Edward L. Simpson died in Corowa, NSW in 1937. The younger John Simpson's recollections of Bacchus Marsh in the 1850s to 1870s were published in the Bacchus Marsh Express on the 25 June 1932.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. James Young was a prominent businessman, land owner and public figure in the early colonial period of Bacchus Marsh. In February 1868 he offered for sale through the agent W. Anderson 38 blocks of land which ran from the Lerderderg RIver westwards beyond Gisborne Road in the vicinity of the present day Masons Land. The land for sale was described as, 'unsurpassed Agricultural Land, in the immediate vicinity of Bacchus Marsh, varying in size from 2 to 12 acres each'. The sale notice in the Bacchus Marsh Express of 1st February 1868 page 2, also noted that, ' Plans can be seen at Mr. Young's Border Mills Store, and at the Border Inn'. This map was created as a plan for an auction of land close to the Bacchus Marsh Railway Station. The auction took place on 23 October 1888. 102 allotments of land from an area known as Lodge and Dunn's paddocks was offered for sale. The auction was conducted by auctioneers based in Melbourne and was advertised in Melbourne newspapers as well as in the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper. The auction plan contains a range of details including the selling agents, Munro and Baillieu; W.P. Lockhart; and John Turner, all of Melbourne, deposit terms for purchases, price of railway passes for a return trip from Melbourne to Bacchus Marsh of 1 shilling, and a description of the land as having 'magnificent views and perfect drainage'. This image shows part of a street procession moving along one of the main streets of Bacchus Marsh. It is probably Main Street Bacchus Marsh. The style of people's clothing in the picture suggests it is from around the 1890s or 1900s. The event associated with the street parade is not known. It is possibly part of the Bacchus Marsh branch of the Australian Natives Association (A.N.A,) annual sports festival which was held over the Easter period. Newspaper reports in the Bacchus Marsh Express in the 1900s report details of the various floats, themes and characters in the A.N.A annual sports event and they align to some degree with the people and activities in this image, and other similar images of street parades in Bacchus Marsh at this time.One digital file acquired from State Library of Victoria. Edgar Gordon Morris was a prominent sportsman in Bacchus Marsh from around 1909 to 1918. He was regarded as the best all-round cricketer in the district and was also Secretary of the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association. He was also a playing member of local football and tennis clubs. From about 1919 to 1921 Morris had been living in Swan Hill. His death at the age of 35 was reported in the Bacchus Marsh Express on the 5th March 1921 and was received with great sadness in sporting circles in Bacchus Marsh and district. To perpetuate his memory a shield to be presented to the premiership team each season in the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association. The E.G. MOrris Shield was first presented for the 1921-1922 season.This item is of historical significance because it is associated with a particular person, Edgar Morris, a prominent sportsman and sports administrator in the Bacchus Marsh area. It is of comparative significance because it is representative of a shield design for a perpetual sporting trophy. The Shield also provides some research value by preserving and commemorating the memory of a prominent individual sports person in the Bacchus Marsh area.A silver plated shield created to perpetuate the memory of E.
