By around circa 1850 Braybrook was already well established, and during the gold rush period also became a staging point for prospectors on their way to the diggings. Local government for the area began on 28th May 1860 when the BRAYBROOK ROAD BOARD DISTRICT was proclaimed, however this authority was soon superseded on 23rd January 1871 when the SHIRE OF BRAYBROOK came into existence. The Shire of Braybrook continued as the local government authority for the district until the CITY OF SUNSHINE was proclaimed in 1951. Rockbank was once part of the Braybrook Road District. In, 1871 the Road District became the Shire of Braybrook. In 1916, this district was transferred to the Shire of Melton. In 1951, further land was lost to the Shire of Melton. During the early days of the Ballarat gold rush, Beatty's Road was one of the main routes from Melbourne to Ballarat via Keilor . In December 1854, troops of the 12th and 40th Regiments marching to suppress the Eureka Stockade would have used this route before stopping at the Rockbank Inn, which was located on Beatty's Road, further west towards Melton. Gladys Maissie "Mace" Babb (b28/10/1889 d22/1/1982) married George Napier Myers (b29/10/1879 d23/9/1948) in 1912 in Victoria. Mace was the daughter of James Babb, a pioneer of Braybrook who worked as a caretaker and road contractor. The Braybrook Road Board proclaimed on the 28th May 1860, and subsequently on the 23rd January 1871, renamed to The Shire of Braybrook. The Braybrook Roads Board and Shire of Braybrook were the earliest form of local government for the entire district that later became Sunshine, and its jurisdiction originally stretched all the way west to Toolern Creek near present‑day Melton. Tottenham Technical School operated from 1957 to 1991. It was part of the post‑war expansion of technical education in Melbourne’s west, serving the rapidly growing industrial belt around Tottenham, West Footscray, Braybrook and Sunshine. The school provided trade‑oriented education: engineering, metalwork, woodwork, technical drawing, applied sciences and practical subjects aligned with local industry. It became a major feeder for apprenticeships at nearby factories including the rail workshops, ammunition factories, and manufacturing plants. Tottenham Technical School was renamed Tottenham Community Secondary College, still carrying its original school number In 1991, a major restructure of schools in the Sunshine district occurred and six schools were merged to form Sunshine College. Tottenham Technical School was closed, and its site did not continue as a Sunshine College campus. A meeting was held on 18th August 1947 at the East Sunshine Community Hall with the aim of forming a motor cycle club. The name BRAYBROOK MOTOR CYCLE CLUB was decided upon "as it would cater for riders and non-riding members in all surrounding districts". The first President was Don Minahan with Bert Watson as Secretary. They had been members of the Auto Cycle Union whose members became dissatisfied with the prize money awarded, so the Victorian Motorcycle Association (VMCA) was formed. The President of the VMCA (Mr. A. Clarke) attended the meeting on 3rd September 1947 which was held in the Hall behind the Sunshine Theatre. This became the regular meeting place. The new Braybrook Club affiliated with the VMCA joining clubs from Altona, Coburg, Essendon, Newport and Preston. Membership mostly came from recreational motor bike riders looking for more structured competitive riding experience and enjoyment. The club conducted its events on Sunday afternoons and as sport at that time was not permitted on Sundays, they overcame that obstacle by seeking a silver coin donation (pointing out that "two bob" was expected). The events were mainly dirt scrambles over open land which today is known as "off road". The favourite sites were Sunshine's ample open spaces such as Glengala Road and McIntyre Road, as well as Arundell Road (Keilor) and Laverton. For track racing experience the club formed a very basic dirt track on the open land in Glengala Road west of the original Sunshine Golf Club, which was very popular on Sunday afternoons for both riders and spectators. In the early 1950's Motorbike and Sidecar races were also witnessed on some Sundays, on a track near the corner of McIntyre and Furlong Roads, North Sunshine. During 1950 the Braybrook members voted in favour of allowing the Sunshine Club to amalgamate with them and form the BRAYBROOK AND DISTRICT MOTORCYCLE CLUB. The merger took place at the meeting on 10th July 1950 when office bearers were elected. The club disbanded in the mid 1960's due to the massive residential development occurring in the Sunshine district, and so activities were merged with the Newport Club. The above information is mainly compiled from Sunshine Advocate articles published on 29/8/47, 12/9/47, and 30/6/50, and from written details supplied by Mr. J. N. Willaton. This type of wrench or spanner was used as a service tool for H. V. McKay Pty. Ltd. manufactured agricultural machinery. This specific tool belonged to Albert (Bert) Montgomery of 11 Kamarooka St, Albion. Bert Montgomery was born in Sunshine and in 1910 was apprenticed as a carpenter with Sunshine Harvester Works, where he worked as a wood machinist. On 19 August 1914, while still an apprentice, he enlisted in the First AIF. He left McKay's and started business as a builder probably just prior to WW2. After the war he joined the Shire of Braybrook as Assistant Building Surveyor until he retired. In 1962 Bert and his friend Jack Causon (proprietor of an Anderson Road second hand store that previously was Les James grocery) were on a fishing trip to Lake Tooliorook (aka Ettrick) near Lismore, Victoria. Their boat capsized and both fishermen were drowned. Bert was a Past President of Sunshine RSL and at that time it was reported that his funeral was the largest that Sunshine had seen. The information about Bert Montgomery was supplied by a Committee member of the Sunshine & District Historical Society Inc. who spoke to Montgomery's daughter, who also donated the tool. This tool serves as a reminder of the large H. V. McKay agricultural manufacturing works that once existed in Sunshine. The tool is associated with the works, and the design is significant enough for images of the tool to be used in an artistic mural, which is painted on the Eastern Pillar of the new H. V. The Braybrook Hotel is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Melbourne’s western suburbs, a bluestone wayside inn established during the gold‑rush era and central to the early civic life of Braybrook, Sunshine, and the Ballarat Road district. In 1989, the Braybrook Hotel underwent a significant round of works that included new additions to the side and rear of the building. These works were designed to expand the hotel’s usable space while keeping the original 1850s bluestone structure intact. These photographs, taken by The Advocate newspaper, capture the period just before the new drive‑in and liquor bar were due for completion. The Sunshine District Scouts Association was the formal coordinating body for all Scout groups in the Sunshine region — covering Sunshine, Tottenham, Albion, Braybrook, Deer Park, and St Albans — from the mid‑20th century until the statewide restructuring of Scout districts in the 1990s–2000s. It acted as the administrative, training, and event organising hub for the western suburbs’ Scout troops and was one of the most active Scout districts in metropolitan Melbourne. Braybrook Junction State School was the original name for what later became Sunshine State School and then Sunshine Primary School (School No. 3113), one of the earliest formal educational institutions in the district. The school opened in 1891 on the corner of Hampshire Road and Morris Street, but enrolments grew so quickly that the building became inadequate within months. The first head teacher was Mr Thomas Flynn. Later in 1891, the school was relocated to the Braybrook Public Hall, at the north‑east corner of Hampshire Road & Benjamin Street. In 1892, the Education Department selected a rented site in Derby Road and the school moved there on 30th September 1892. This is one of two Hume and Hovell Cairns erected in the City of Brimbank. The Deer Park Cairn was erected in 1924, one hundred years after the explorers passed through the district. It was built by ratepayers of Shire of Braybrook as part of a statewide centenary program that installed 37 monuments along the expedition route. The monument has been moved twice due to widening of Ballarat Road. The first time was in the 1960's. More recently it was moved onto the Deer Park Primary School land just outside the fence line. In 1910, Alice Errington donated six acres of land to the people of St Albans. The land donated was located on the south side of Boundary Road (Now Main Road East), which was the border between the Shire of Braybrook and the Shire of Keilor, In reality, the community was one, and Alice intended the land provide recreation facilities for both the Shire of Braybrook and the Shire of Keilor residents. In 1929, the reserve trustees decided to vest the land to the Shire of Braybrook Council due to ongoing rate costs, liability for road construction costs and the need for formal municipal management. The memorial wrought iron gates were added later and are one of the few early memorials in St Albans that have a tangible link to the pioneer era of the district. Over the years the reserve has seen various landscaping design changes, and various sporting club rooms and community buildings added. This photograph taken in 1993, captures the planting of a Canary Island tree in the reserve to reflect the 1920's - 1940's civic planting trends. As of the 8th January 2026 this tree is still alive and growing in the reserve.
