These photographs and medals are of the McIntyre family. Three members of Lara's McIntyre family served during the First and Second World Wars, and two were members of the Lara RSL. John Lachlan McIntyre was born at Beeac, Victoria in December 1890. He enlisted in the 1st AIF in July 1915. John fought on the Western Front, taking part in the battles of Fromelles and the 2nd Battle of the Somme. He was severely wounded at Fromelles and spent 12 months in hospital in England before returning to the front. John returned home in 1919 and was granted a soldier settlement block in Lara in 1937. He was a founding member of Lara RSL and is its longest serving member. John died in 1990. Thomas Gordon McIntyre was born at Lara in 1901. Thomas, known as Gordon, was too young to enlist in the First World War with his brothers. At the outbreak of the Second World War he joined the 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion. He fought in the Syrian Campaign, before being recalled to Australia to fight in the pacific campaign. Gordon was wounded in a battle against the Japanese in Java on the 19/02/1942, and taken prisoner. No record of him after this was ever discovered, and he is presumed to have been killed. Jim McIntyre was born in 1893, and grew up in Lara and Geelong. Jim enlisted in the 1st AIF in 1916, and served with the 14th Battalion through the war. He was wounded twice. Jim died in 1976. The McIntyre family were early pioneers in the Lara district, and the brothers were founding members of the Lara RSL. Their medals and photographs represent a significant link to the history of the town and sub-branch. Three photographs and three sets of medals in a pine wood frame with glass covering. Eureka battle was fought on 3 December 1854, with the soldiers attacking the miners on the Eureka Lead, Ballarat East. Before the actual battle there were skirmishes and unrest. McIntyre, the author of the letter was arrested after the burning of Bentley's Eureka Hotel.The letter is dated 29 March 1855, the location being Bakery Hill. It is a digital copy of a letter from McIntyre who was present at the burning of Bentley's Eureka Hotel. McIntyre was arrested with Fletcher. The first St. Hilary’s Church of England (Kew) was a timber building on the corner of John and Rowland Streets, designed in 1888 by Albert Purchas. This timber building was demolished in the 1940s to make way for a new church and tennis courts. This home-made nightgown was part of Mary Ethel McIntyre (nee Lindsay)'s wedding trousseau. Mary married Robert McIntyre on 29 August 1929 at St Andrews Church, Korumburra. The couple moved to Lang-Lang, then Mentone. The nightgown was donated by Mary's daughter-in-law, Elaine McIntyre (nee Wyatt), who was born and raised in Brighton. Thomas Newman McIntyre (1846 - 1918) was the sole survivor of the police party murdered by the Kelly Gang at Stringybark Creek on 28 October 1878. Importantly, McIntyre was later the key witness in Ned Kelly's murder trial. Edward Monk (1844 - 1928) was a selector living in the area, who accompanied the police party sent to returned to collect the bodies of the murdered police. One subsection of this collection is shoes, designed and manufactured for Australian women by Australian and European designers. Many of the shoes, while often mass-produced, were generally constructed by skilled artisans using traditional shoe-making techniques. The shoes date from the 1890s to the 1980s. These shoes were owned, worn and donated to the collection by Annie McIntyre.The McIntyre Collection of clothing and clothing accessories forms one of the largest single donations to our Fashion & Design collection. It includes clothing and clothing accessories worn by four women in the Cohen and McIntyre families across three generations. The items worn by Melbourne architect, and Kew resident, Dione McIntyre date from the 1960s and 1970s, and include evening wear, day wear, hats and shoes. As Dione McIntyre often accompanied her husband, fellow architect Peter McIntyre, to formal events, there are a number of pieces of evening wear among the items. The McIntyre Collection also includes items worn by women of an earlier generation: by Lilian Cohen, Dione McIntyre's mother, and by her mother-in-law, the wife of the architect Robert McIntyre. At the other end of the chronological spectrum are a number of outfits belonging to, worn and donated by Annie McIntyre. These include outfits created by notable late 20th century Australian and/or international fashion designers. The McIntyre Collection is significant historically and artistically as it includes examples of design that demonstrate changing tastes in fashion over an 80-year period. T. & C. Clark & Company Limited was based at Shakespeare Foundry in Wolverhampton England and was founded in 1795 by Thomas and Charles Clark. The company grew to be one of the largest iron foundries in Wolverhampton and were pioneering in the manufacture of enamelled cast iron cookware and sanitary wares. The company's product range included thousands of items, both domestic and industrial. T. & C. Clark were pioneers in the use of enamelled cast ironware, after taking out a patent in 1839 guaranteeing their products to be free of lead or arsenic. The company became the largest employer in Wolverhampton employing between 600 to 700 people.The item is significant as it was used as a domestic kitchen item to boil water safely without the concern that the metal may contain lead or arsenic as earlier cooking utensils had. Clark & Company Limited was founded in 1795 by Thomas and Charles Clark.
