This map from the mid-18th century doesn't include the finer details of land and sea masses that we know today. The map was produced by German cartographer and publisher, Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) and published in 1746, after his death. Earlier versions were published, such as 1707 and 1716. The date can be calculated from the Roman numerals on the top left text area. This print of a map is significant for its connection with early world explorers. A comparison of maps over the centuries shows the progression of navigational technology, the countries who claimed the land they explored. The naming of even some Australian locations shows who had already made their mark on Australia in the early 18th century. The print shows the fine details included by the cartographer and the beauty included that makes it attractive and interesting even today. The map is also significant for its connection with German cartographer, Johann Baptist Homann, whose Homann publishing company was renewed in Germany for producing high quality maps and atlases. James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.Cook's 12 years sailing around the Pacific Ocean contributed much to European knowledge of the area. Thomas Ham was a cartographer, engraver, lithographer and publisher in Victoria and Queensland. He compiled and printed several editions of his squatting map, beginning with A map of Australia Felix in 1847 and changing its title to Ham's squatting map of Victoria in 1851. The 1851 edition was accompanied by a key listing the names of all the squatters within squatting districts and counties. Later editions show the existing counties, but some areas of Gippsland and the Australian Alps are still described as 'unsurveyed country'. The sculptural installation was a gift from the Portuguese government and presented to Warrnambool City Council. The sculptor, Jose Nuncio, completed the work in 1999, and it was inaugurated at Warrnambool in 2001. Prince Henry the Navigator founded a school of navigation in Sagres, Portugal. This led to navigation techniques that made the 15th century voyages of discovery possible. The vision of Prince Henry brought together ship builders, cartographers, instrument makers and mathematicians. Vasco de Gama rounded the southern tip of Africa and sailed across the Indian Ocean to India in 1496. Warning: This object includes historical language referring to First Nations Peoples which is no longer appropriate but has been recorded for historical purposes. Produced in 1853, this map shows the land holdings of European families. While the majority of holdings are small there are also large land holdings as can be seen with Henry Dendy's Special Survey. Of particular note is the "Reserve for Aborigines" which was established in approximately 1841 and consisted of over 830 acres. This area is the current location of Mordialloc township and Attenborough Park, in Mordialloc, is the last remnant of the reserve. An Alfred Sikes, possibly the surveyor/cartographer who drew this parish plan, purchased land in Berwick in 1854.A handrawn map on fabric, with blue markings representing the coastline to Port Phillip Bay, red markings representing a proposed train line to Mordialloc, major roads and street, as well as a "Reserve for Aborigines", which constituted approximately 830 acres. These six photographs of Printer Technicians using a heavy-duty guillotine to trim bulk printed map stock were probably taken circa 1960s to 1980s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Personnel are not identified on Photos .3P and .4P, however names are annotated on photos .1P, .2P, .4P and .5P. Cartographers normally provided trim marks to specified map dimensions as guidance to the printer. The trimming stage, like all the other printing processes required high levels of accuracy. These five photographs were most likely taken in the 1970s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Photos .1P to .3P are annotated with the name of the technicians written on the back. Although Photo .4P is not annotated the technician is positively identified. In these five photos the technician is applying a UV-sensitive pigmented dye emulating one of the print colours to a white opaque polyester sheet mounted on a rotating table in a whirler. The coated sheet was dried before placement in a vacuum light frame beneath a stud registered map negative. They were then exposed to a carbon arc lamp. If there was more than one negative – typical for a type impression or 1st proof, the process was repeated for the other negatives of that print colour. There was a single exposure for composite negatives which was typical for the 2nd and final proof - the pre-press proof. The sheet was removed and washed with water and dried leaving the exposed colour impression. The technician repeated this process using process or spot dyes for remaining publication colours. Type impressions were a combination of the map grid and the topographic features in their correct print colours, forming a base for the cartographer to accurately position map names and symbols on a clear film overlay. The pre-press proof was a cost-effective way of producing a one-off visual copy of the map or chart product. It enabled cartographers to perform a quality inspection and correct any faults before publication. Accurate charts were imperative for sea farers to sail their vessels safely from one side of the world to another. The British Admiralty published many charts and updated them frequently. Specialists were employed to gather information such as depth soundings to give the navigator as many helps as possible. At regular intervals the charts had to be updated with the amount of adjustment needed to a compass to allow for magnetic variation.This chart is significant for its association with incoming and outgoin ships for trade and passengers in the late 19th century.Admiralty Chart of Port Phillip, Victoria, South Coast of Australia. Statue presented by Andrew Stenhouse, 3 December 1914. Donated by Mr Andrew Stenhouse, a retired contractor who lived at Beaconsfield Parade, St Kilda, he was interested in the reclamation of the foreshore in front of his dwelling Captain James Cook FRS (1728-1779) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. During three voyages to the Pacific Ocean he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. He was killed in the Hawaiian Islands in 1779. The statue appears to have been the first monument erected to him in Victoria and is a replica of one in Whitby, England. It was unveiled on Monday December 7th, 1914 by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Arthur Stanley in front of Commonwealth and State dignitaries and hundreds of St Kilda residents. In 1990 MAJ Bob Williams was the OC of Technical Development Cell. He won first prize for his entry ‘Innovations in Cartographic Communication’ in the individual category at the 2nd Australian Institute of Cartographers and BHP Engineering Technology Research and Development Awards. The award was announced at the 1990 Australian Cartographic Conference in Darwin where MAJ Williams presented his entry. At the time he had completed PhD studies at the Australian Defence Academy and was the first Survey Corps officer to complete studies at this advanced level. Also, in 1990 the Royal Australian Survey Corps’ meritorious achievements were formally recognised by the Senate of the Australian Parliament in a Notice of Motion on 31st of May 1990. The Royal Australian Survey Corps also featured in the issue of a commemorative stamped envelope issued by Australia Post. These achievements are covered in more detail in page 147 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. This map is a reprint of Johann (Johannes) Walch’s “Australien (Sudland) auch Polynesien oder Inselwelt, insgemein der funfte Welltheil”, published in 1802. It shows Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia and the Pacific Islands shows a large number of places names, many of which have changed since the map was drawn. The map includes the routes and dates of the voyages of Tasman, Cook, Bougainville, Carteret, Byron, and others up to 1802. The shapes of the lands on this early map show that some of the areas had not yet been charted. The map was donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village in April 1990 by the Group Study Exchange Team from Rotary District 233, Sweden. It was framed and presented by Rotary District 978 and presented by Barry Lange, the Governor of District 978 in 1989-90. (District 978, Geelong East, is now District 9780.) Johann (Johannes) Walch Johann Walch, painter and engraver, was born in 1757. He was well known for creating miniature portraits. He gained his training in Geneva, Venice and Rome. His publications include atlases and sheet maps, many of which were reprinted after his death in 1816. This reprint of an 1802 is significant for its historical and geographical contant, showing the voyages of many early explorers to the southern regions of the world including Australia. It also shows the early names used for countries and towns and is a valuable reference to historical interpretation. Navigation charts are used by mariners around the world for navigating waterways. This chart was created for Otago Harbour in New Zealand. A ship "Otago' was named after this harbour and was once commanded by renowned maritime author Joseph Conrad.
