The spine has a Library label with an inscription.fictionThe Dwarf of Dark Mountain is a children's adventure novel illustrated by Norman Sutcliffe. Set against the backdrop of the New Zealand bush and rural landscapes, the story follows a group of young protagonists on a mystery-filled adventure centred around a local geological landmark known as "Dark Mountain". Typical of Isabel Maud Peacocke's popular juvenile fiction of the 1930s (such as The Cruise of the Crazy Jane and Cathleen with a C), the book weaves together themes of bush navigation and exploration. The children venture through dense ti-tree scrub and native fern gullies, with the narrative centring around the titular "dwarf" of the mountain blending rural Australian and New Zealand family life with wholesome mystery, moral growth, and outdoor adventure.warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, the dwarf of dark mountain, isabel maude peacocke, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, pattison collection, warrnambool library, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, i. m. cluett., illustrator norman sutcliffe

This atlas, printed in 1944, details not only the geographic and political boundaries of the world as it was at that time but also the snap shot of life of the time. This snap shot in time covers the major Australian cities, the major farming, grazing, industrial and sporting/recreational activities. Also there are snap shots of similar activities from other global areas. The period also covered World War II, detailed by a photo of "shell making", munitions, required by Australian soldiers. The great political and territorial changes made as a result of World War II can be clearly identified for example , Israel (the Jewish homeland). The various prewar colonies of major European nations. This atlas was used by children of a Kiewa Valley family and shows the value and the general educational exposure that these children had at this time. The rural setting and within the backdrop of a world war did not severely alter the life style of children in this region. The "news reels" shown in cinemas of cities and larger towns were the only visual realisations of major events of global significance available to these children. The information provided by this atlas allowed students to glimpse at what the "outside world" was. The majority of these students would possibly never see these regions for themselves. The great communication facilities of the late 1900s and beyond, was still only science fiction. This atlas has a thick (350 g/m) red cardboard cover with bold black lettering and shading. The cover is set out within a shield like frame. The shield is held up by two square markings, each with a four part circular pattern and a cord entwining two pendulum structures ending with a bowl figure at the bottom. There is a semi circular form enclosing a printed book contents list. The inside cover has the atlas title and contents and the publisher details. The atlas contain 56 pages of world and Australian maps, vegetation and rainfall maps. Within this atlas there are 27 double sided pages of black and white photographs depicting life styles, buildings, landscapes and prominent and significant to Australia males from 1652 to 1944. The pages are of approximately 200 g/m and have the yellow aged appearance. On front cover "Philips' Australian COMMONWEALTH ATLAS" and underneath "Containing" underneath "60 PHYSICAL, POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC MAPS". Towong Hill Homestead is a 110-year-old Federation style mansion situated on a rock outcrop, with views of about 260 degrees. It was built over 2 years by grazier Walter Mitchell from bricks made from local clay dug from the river bank, to be the family home for his new bride Winifred. They established their home in 1904. After the death of Walter in 1917, Winifred relocated her family, but the homestead remained in the families hands. In 1935, Thomas Mitchell (1906-1984) returned home to Australia, a successful Lawyer, and married city girl, Elyne Chauvel, and settled himself back at his childhood home, Towong Hill. Thomas was a world champion slalom skier, had been a prisoner of the Japanese at Changi, and was elected for the Country Party in 1946 and served as attorney-general in the McDonald government. His wife Elayne (1913-2002) is best remembered for her Silver Brumby series of novels for children. But Elyne also wrote a substantial number of non-fiction works about the Snowy Mountains. Photographs demonstrate local Kiewa Valley residents enjoying a community visit to the historic homestead at Towong Hill which holds significance to the early history of the area. Also demonstrates a pictorial history of social activities undertaken during this period2 black and white photographs mounted on buff card. Hard cover book, The Sealskin Cloak Author: Pen Name Rolf Boldrewood For (Thomas Alexander Browne) Publisher: Macmillan And Co Date: 1896 Brown cloth hardcover and spine with spine lettering in black texter. The spine has a Library label with inscription.fictionThe Sealskin Cloak (1896) is a novel by Rolf Boldrewood, the pen name of Thomas Alexander Browne the Australian author best known for Robbery Under Arms. Unlike his famous bushranger and goldfield tales, this novel is set largely in England and Europe rather than the Australian bush. It opens with Hugh Gordon parting from his wife, Marguerite, at London Bridge railway station as she travels to attend to a sick aunt in the south of France, wearing her distinctive sealskin cloak. The cloak later becomes central to a case of mistaken identity following an accident, when the name and address sewn inside the garment are used to identify a body as Marguerite Gordon. The novel is generally classed as a romantic mystery rather than one of his colonial adventure narratives.warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, great ocean road, book, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, warrnambool public library, the sealskin cloak, rolf boldrewood

Hard cover book. Jimmy of Murrumbar Author: E D Oakley (Edward Daniel Oakley) Publisher: Osboldstone & Co, Pty Ltd Date: 1938 Further Information: Pictorial paper-covered boards or wrappers over a stiff paper binding Illustrated title/contents material and a frontispiece or inserted plate. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.fictionThe story is a children's adventure story in which Jimmy works as a police tracker, following criminals through the Victorian bush and mountain ranges. The emphasis is on his "amazing ability" and "fidelity" that is, his loyalty, reliability and skill in serving the police. The plot appears to belong to the tradition of Australian juvenile bush fiction with a pursuit over difficult terrain, danger, endurance and the demonstration of specialised bush knowledge. It should not automatically be treated as a documentary account of a particular historical tracker. Unless the text contains an author's note or identifiable historical references, Jimmy is best regarded as a fictional or fictionalised character. The book is therefore both an adventure narrative and a period document revealing how Aboriginal ability was represented through a predominantly settler-colonial publishing culture.shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, warrnambool, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, jimmy of murrumbar, e d oakley, edward daniel oakley, novel, young adult novel, juvenile fiction, australian black tracker, law enforcement - police trackers, tracking and trailing in australia, australian bush, grampian ranges in victoria, warrnambool history, fletcher jones, oakbank, thomas and eliza oakley, indigenous literature, indigenous australians

The synopsis of Ultima Thule follows the final, tragic chapter of Dr Richard Mahony's life. Having lost his wealth due to poor investments and misplaced trust, the forty-nine-year-old Mahony returns to Australia financially ruined. Forced to restart his medical practice in the rural Victorian towns of Chiltern and Koroit, Mahony suffers a severe physical and mental breakdown driven by early-onset neurosyphilis and profound alienation from his surroundings. Notably, it was actually written in 1957 but wasn't published until after Lindsay's death, and one source specifies it was released by his widow the year after he died. It covers ten pages of front matter plus 205 pages of text and 28 pages of illustrations, bound in blue cloth. It was the last of three autobiographical works Lindsay produced, and his final book overall. The work capped a 56-year writing career that began with his first novel in 1913. As a genre piece, it's a memoir/reflection on his own life and creative persona; the title itself, My Mask, signals that it's presented as a curated self-portrait rather than a full confessional.shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, warrnambool, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, my mask, norman lindsay
