Early colonists from N.S.W. called it a "monkey bear". Koala means in Aboriginal "does not drink" or "no drink". They are slow-moving, tree-climbing, friendly marsupials with thick woolly fur coats, large ears and rubber nose. They live in gum trees and feed upon their leaves. In 1993 Eltham Shire Council issued a permit to Michael Muzur, Terry Lant and Andrew McMillan to redevelop the former Montmorency Theatre/Bingo Hall at 41-43 Were Street as an alcohol-free youth entertainment centre. Ron McCormack, retired former JP on behalf of 41 Joint Appellants consisting of local residents and traders successfully lobbied the community and won an Appeal to have the permit cancelled as unsuitable development. The Administrative Appeal Tribunal found that the proposed development came withing the Eltham Planning Scheme definition of an 'amusement parlour' and that the playing of pool an amusement machines would be the focus of the centre and unlikely to attract older age groups. The tribunal was not satisfied the applicants had sufficient knowledge or where with all required for the successful running of this type of operation. With respect to the objectors, the Tribunal did not accept that a responsibly managed and attractive amusement parlour could not coexist near the adjoining residential area and without detriment to the commercial centre. At a Council meeting on June 7, 1994 councillors requested a report outlining criteria to be used to assess planning applications for youth entertainment venues given the Tribunal's view that a poorly managed facility in a small neighbourhood shopping centre, particularly in such close proximity to a residential area would not only have the potential to increase perceived youth problems, but could jeopardise the prospects of future proposals. Hannah Lloyd's Railway General Store, circa 1917-1920. The store was located just south of opposite Arthur Street at present-day 929-937 Main Road. Note various signs for Electrine Candles, Baker, Cadburys Cocoa, Cadburys Chocolate (in window) and Refreshment Room (faded). This store was the first shop in the present-day Eltham shopping precinct built in 1902 by Luther Haley who operated it from 1902-1917 when it was purchased by Hannah Lloyd and became known as Lloyd’s Railway General Store. Hannah operated it from 1917 to 1920. It then went through a succession of six owners until Eric Staff purchased it in 1939. It remained in the Staff family where it became locally known as Staff’s until Ray Staff sold it in 1965 and it was demolished and replaced with a new a self-service grocery, restaurant and electrical repair shop, the basis of which remains today. The grocery store was the Eltham Big Star Food Centre. The old weatherboard building, possibly dating from the 1860s, comprised a dwelling with a shop in the front room opening off a timber verandah deck which directly fronted the Main Road footpath. At the rear was a brick building of much later date which was for many years used for the bakery. The buildings were demolished in 1979 for construction of flats. The old bakery was one of the earliest stores in Eltham. It was once run by Luther Haley who was evicted when Mrs Burgoyne bought the shop in 1902. Luther built the first shop in the new business district next to the railway station in 1902 (later Staffs general store). It was also the scene of a suspected murder when the baker's wife was found dead at the bottom of the well but that was more urban myth. The unfortunate woman suffered a medical episode resulting in her death and she consequently fell in to the well, so no murder after all. The incident happened in 1898 and the owner and baker was Mr Clement Brown. It was his wife Martha that met her unfortunate demise. A description of her struggle is in the link below. J.N. Burgoyne bought the bakery in 1902 (Mrs Burgoyne was the owner but it seems a lot of men back in those days put their businesses in the names of their wives). The subject of murder first came to light in a newspaper story in 1954 when their son J.J. (Jack) Burgoyne was speaking about the business after it had changed hands to Mr Jim Arnett and family. It was again referenced by Harry Burgoyne (grandson) in 1979 when the bakery was demolished. Seems like what may have been an embellished yarn of old became urban folklore but was simply not true. Before 1908 the words "melting pot" was a term relating to a "crucible" with a meaning of "a pot in which metals and other substances are melted (fused) to provide metal items of varying shapes and uses. From the mid 1900's this term changed and became more related to the "mixing" of social and ethnically diverse populations. The description used here is that of pre 1908. This melting pot was used in the early to late 1900's when produce and hardware shops were too far away from the Kiewa Valley and time was at the essence. The ability to manufacture as many "crucial " items at the home property was the difference between running a successful rural business or not. The isolation of the Kiewa Valley (before the 1950's), hindered the "time down" of machinery and important "widget" replacements. The ability of self sufficiency on properties is still a boon to rural properties as time lost is never really recovered.This melting pot is highly significant to the Kiewa Valley as it provides evidence that the graziers and cattle stations required to be self sufficient in all aspects of day to day maintenance and replenishment of worn materials requiring to be "manufactured " at the property and lack of replacements from commercially shelved products. This aspect of "survival" in the "bush" can be seen in the "huts" built on the Bogong High Plains to accommodate the seasonal grazing of cattle from the Kiewa Valley.This black melting pot is made of cast iron. The lid is missing. The top rim of the pot has three lips for poring accuracy. The formation of these lips are in a "triangle" formation. The top section of the body has a curve inwards reducing the pot diameter from 270mm at the base to 135mm.at the top. The handle is made from heavy gauge wire which is fastened to the body through two lugs (welded onto the top section of the pot) and fasten through a hole at the top of each lug. The handle has a "U" shape as it goes through the lug hole, ensuring no accidental fixture to any side thus allowing free swiveling from one side to the other . "BH" indented within a diamond shape.
