This is a set of two photographs of Directors of Survey Army Headquarters circa 1942 to 1967. COL Lawrence FitzGerald OBE was Director from 1942 to 1960. He received the Order of the British Empire in 1948 for his service in WW2. Although it is not known when BRIG Lawrence FitzGerald OBE was promoted to Brigadier, it is possibly an honorary promotion on his retirement in 1960. He served in the Australian Army from 03 September 1923 to 05 January 1960. COL Lawrence FitzGerald OBE was succeeded by COL Donald Macdonald AM, whose appointment to Director was from 1960 to 1967. COL Macdonald AM was promoted to Brigadier on his retirement before assuming the honorary position of Colonel Commandant of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Australia is governed by a Federal Government and by six State Governments. National coordination of their respective geodetic survey and topographic mapping activities is effected on the advice of a National Mapping Council. Twenty years ago, at least 95% of Australia was poorly mapped and what maps existed were in need of revision. only a small area of the continent was covered by horizontal geodetic control and there was no scheme for a national levelling survey. Over the intervening period there has been an urgent and increasing demand for topographic maps varying from large scale contoured maps in support of specific engineering projects to rapid reconnaissance maps required for mineral prospecting in remote areas. Superimposed on this has been a defence requirement, specifically for military training areas, and generally for maps of the whole country. During the period much progress has been made. The first photograph was probably taken at a media event announcing the introduction of the Heidelberg Speedmaster printing press in late 1990. LTCOL Rene van den Tol was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1989 to 1991. Partly obscured behind the CO was Mr Bruce Reid, who was the newly elected federal member for Bendigo. The media event was held in Wayzgoose Hall, Lithographic Squadron’s new purpose-built building constructed to house the Speedmaster printing press. This occasion is covered in more detail in page 143 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. In photos .1P to .8P, the Defence Force Service Medal was presented to personnel in recognition of 15 years of efficient remunerated service, or the Clasp for each further 5-year period of service. The photos were taken on four separate occasions. Photos .1P to .3P were taken on the parade ground. LTCOL John Nolan was the CO of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment from 1965 to 1969. He was subsequently promoted to COL and was the Director of Military Survey from 1972 to 1975. This is a set of nine photographs of Defence Force Service Medal presentations by the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB; at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 5th of June 1979. The photos were taken next to the flagpole in Fortuna Villa’s front garden. Upon retirement from the Army in 1982, Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB; was appointed to the position of Governor of South Australia from 1982 to 1991. On this occasion the CGS presented the Defence Force Service Medal to WO2 Alex Cairney, WO1 Bob Mason and WO2 Ken Slater for 15 years of efficient remunerated service in the Australian Army. It is likely the unidentified UK Exchange senior NCO was the recipient of the UK Army’s equivalent service medal. Other key staff appearing in these photos are LTCOL Bob Skitch was the CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1976 to 1980 and WO1 Aub Harvey, who was RSM from 1976 to 1982. MAJ Don Swiney MBE was later promoted to LTCOL and was CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1985 to 1987. He was subsequently promoted to Colonel and was Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corp from November 1988 to January 1991, and the honorary position as Colonel Commandant from January 1993 to January 1996. This collection of 22 photos was most likely taken in 1984. Mr Gordon Scholes AO was the Minister for Defence in the Hawke Government from 1983 to 1984. It’s evident in these photos he was taken on a tour through the production areas. Mr John Brumby AO at this time was the Federal Member for Bendigo. He later moved on to Victorian state politics, serving as Treasurer from 2000 to 2007 and Premier from 2007 to 2010. Key Army Survey Regiment personnel identified include COL Alex Laing, the Director of Survey from 1983 to 1988 and CO LTCOL Jorge Gruszka who led the unit from 1982 to 1985. The rank of the senior officer is not known, however would have been a Major-General or above, due to the presence of the aide-de-camp (female captain). This is a photograph of three retired officers from the Royal Australian Survey Corps taken on Corps Day, at the School of Military Survey, Latchford Barracks, Bonegilla in July 1991. BRIG Don Macdonald AM served in the Australian Regular Army from 1st of January 1936 to 22nd of March 1967. He was the Director of the Survey Corps from January 1960 to March 1967. COL Macdonald was promoted to Brigadier before assuming the honorary position of Colonel Commandant of RA Svy from August 1967 to January 1973. LTCOL Bob Skitch served in the Australian Regular Army from 14th of February 1955 to 27th of February 1981. He was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1976 to 1980. LT Leo Noel Fletcher MID served in the Australian Regular Army from 1st January 1938 to 14th November 1945. These photographs were taken at the Corps Day parade at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo in July 1983. This was the Director of the Survey Corps – COL John Hillier’s last parade at Fortuna before his retirement. COL Hillier, often referred to as ‘NRJ’ (his initials) was Director for five years. COL Alex W. Laing attended the parade as his successor, seen in the foreground of photos .5P and .6P. COL Hillier was appointed a couple of years later to the honorary position of Colonel Commandant of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1989 to 1993. COL Laing was Director of RASvy from July 1983 to November 1988. This is a set of five photographs of CAPT James ‘Jim’ Leslie Stedman in the field demonstrating the setup of prisms used as electric distance measurement (EDM) receiver reflectors for tellurometer equipment and the sighting of a large surveyor’s light. This equipment was deployed in establishing mapping and geodetic control operations. The photos were most likely taken in the late 1950s or early 1960s. The tellurometers of this era were man-portable systems that improved geodetic survey efficiencies for rapid network extension and densification replacing triangulation with EDM and theodolite traverse sometimes using Bilby Towers to extend line lengths. Jim Stedman later reached the rank of Colonel, was Director of Military Survey from 1975 to 1978 and was appointed as Colonel Commandant (honorary appointment, Retd) of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1978 to 1983. This is a set of five photographs of vehicles used by field survey parties. c1950s. The first two photos show unidentified surveyors and field survey vehicles departing the Army Survey Regiment’s transport compound. The third photo of LTCOL Lindsay Lockwood and CAPT Jim Stedman was taken at a field survey camp at Camooweal, QLD. LTCOL Lindsay Lockwood was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1951 to 1962. As the longest serving commanding officer of the unit, there was many changes implemented. LTCOL Lindsay Lockwood’s period as CO is covered in more detail in pages 48-49 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. These photographs were most likely taken in 1965, on possibly two separate occasions of an Australian Army General’s visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. As there are no annotations on the photos, the exact date and the names of the Generals are unknown. Some RASvy personnel are positively identified. The technical tour included the photogrammetric and printing areas of the Regiment. The newly introduced Wild B8 stereo plotter featured in photo .2P and the M.A.N.
