TOC H was founded as a Christian organisation during the First World War in Belgium in 1915. Talbot House was a venue for respite from the war for soldiers and civilians. During the 1920s TOC H spread around the world especially to Commonwealth countries. In 1923 the Governor General of Australia wrote to The Reverend "Tubby" Clayton indicating that he and Lady Forster wished to endow a TOC H lamp, the symbol of TOC H in memory of their two sons who were killed in the war. The lamp symbol is a replica of the lamp used to provide light to early Christians who sought refuge in the catacombs of Rome. The cross of Lorraine is an indicator of its origins in the Ypres salient.The lamp is a symbol of an ongoing commitment of TOC H to spread light wherever it may be required. These badges are maintained as mementos of the Warrnambool branch of TOC H which operated from a sandstone building in Koroit Street Warrnambool. Australia, like many countries involved in both the First and Second World Wars realised that they would need more funds to resource their campaigns, so war loan programs were developed. These programs encouraged the population to purchase government war bonds which would be repaid with interest at a later time while immediately assisting the war effort. Post WW2 the government continued to encourage citizens to save money in an attempt to curb inflation. Security loans formed part of this countries economic program from the 1940's onwards. Districts were allocated a quota for which they encouraged citizens to subscribe and pennants were awarded for the highest per capita payment amongst the town population. In 1946 Bendigo was the first country city in Australia to record a quota success for the Second Security Loan, raising £260,480 from 1953 subscribers. This is a trophy awarded at a camp of the 4/19 Light Horse Regiment. This regiment appeared to have been based in the Corangamite region of the Western District and included regiment members from Warrnambool. It is not known exactly what type of competition was an ‘Officers Flutter’. Light Horse regiments were cavalry regiments that were established at the time of the Crimean War in the 1860s. During the First World War the 4th Light Horse served with distinction in France, Gallipoli and Palestine. In 1948 the 17th Prince of Wales Light Horse, the 19th Yarrowee Light Horse and the 4th (ex 20th ) Corangamite Light Horse amalgamated to form a revived 4/19 Light Horse. This regiment kept alive the tradition of the original Light Horse units, becoming part of the Australian Army Reserve and members served in Vietnam and East Timor. This cup is of interest as an example of the trophies awarded for competition at a Light Horse regiment camp in the 1930s. This is a metal cup (silver amalgam)) with two side handles and a narrow stem attached to a silver base. The cup is attached to a brown Bakelite stand. This photograph album appears to have belonged to Agnes Ardlie. She was the daughter of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the grand daughter of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughter of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) and her sister Dorothy lived for some years at Aroona, 19 Princess Street, Warrnambool. This album is of interest as the photographs are of Agnes Ardlie and her extended family in the 1920s and 30s and thus provide an insight not only into the lives of a prominent Warrnambool family but also gives us a glimpse of the social aspects of the lives of the more affluent families in Warrnambool during that period and of the custom of keeping photograph albums to preserve the photographs.This is a soft cover photograph album with a light brown cover bound with white string. The front cover has an imprinted decorative pattern on the left side and there is a maker’s stamp on the back page. These boots may have been made as a sample as they are a very small size and do not appear to have been worn. They come from the New Zealand International Exhibition held at Hagley Park, Christchurch from November 1906 to April 1907. This exhibition was the brainchild of the New Zealand Prime Minister, Richard Seddon who died before the exhibition opened. Nearly 2 million people visited the exhibition at a time when the population of New Zealand was less than one million. The exhibition was thus rated a success even though there was a financial loss. No information has been found on the bootmakers, H. Perry & Co. In the 19th and early 20th centuries boots were an essential item for women who often had to walk through unmade streets and muddy paddocks. This item is of interest as it is a memento of an important New Zealand Exhibition early in the 20th century. This is a pair of a lady’s light brown leather boots. The boots have long leather tongues with 16 eyelets either side to lace up the front instep. The laces are missing. The wooden heels are slightly raised. H. Perry & Co. This item is a Sharpe Bros stone jar, presumably from the Warrnambool factory. The Sharpe Bros soft drinks factories in Australia and New Zealand existed from 1903 to 1972 and at one stage they had 35 factories. They were best known for their home deliveries of ginger beer and other brewed beverages in one gallon stone jars. The Warrnambool Sharpe Bros factory was established in 1919 and existed until 1951. It was situated at the old Rowley cordial factory at the corner of Banyan and Timor Streets. It was established by the founder of the Sharpe Bros business, John Sharpe. The signature on the base of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society Sharpe Bros jars is that of John H. Sharpe who for many years was the manager of the Sydney Sharpe Bros factories. He put the signature on the jars when he was visiting History House in Warrnambool in the mid 1980s. This demijohn is of considerable importance as it comes from the Sharpe Bros aerated waters factory, a business that was prominent in Warrnambool for over 30 years. Cordial manufacturing was an important industry in Warrnambool for over 100 years.This is a cylindrical stone jar with a buff-coloured base, a light brown top and a composite material screw topper. The top above the neck is bulbous-shaped and above this it is dome-shaped. A metal handle is attached to the neck. The maker’s information is on the sides in black printing. Part of this information includes a horseshoe-shaped scroll and a decorative pattern. There is a signature and other writing on the base of the jar in blue ballpoint pen. These cello strings belonged to Edith Jacobs (nee Larwill) who was prominent in music circles in Queensland before her marriage to Henry Jacobs, a Warrnanbool Estate Agent and Auctioneer during the 1940s and 50s. Edith Jacobs featured in many concerts and musical entertainments in Warrnambool during the middle years of the 20th century. Her son, Frank Jacobs was a prominent businessman in Warrnambool in the 70s, 80s and 90s and the wallet was either made by him or for him. These items are of some significance as they belonged to Edith Jacobs, a musician who was prominent in the Warrnambool musical scene in Warrnambool in the 1940s and 50s.This is a light brown leather wallet, hand made with two fringed areas, one on the top covering. There is some machine stitching and some hand stitching (repairs)The wallet is lined with cream-coloured silk and the back of the wallet has an etching of an emu. Bradley and Hubbard Co. 1869 to 1940. Pat'd 1895 - 1898.Used by a Kiewa Valley residentNickel plate body with glass chimney and large white lamp shade. Both bowl and base are panelled and the base is scrolled on the edge. The bowl has a fill cap inscribed B & H and opposite there is a ratchet wheel lift. On top of the bowl is a decorated cylinder which lifts up to enable the lamp to be lit with a match. The glass chimney sits on top. These reading glasses plus the two additional replacement lenses were highly fashionable in the late 1800's and early 1900's due to their light frames ie. wire. They are of light material and are not as obtrusive, or heavy, as horn rimmed reading glasses.This minimisation of the eye wear was to allow the facial features to be presented without any obstructing eye wear, "au naturel". The "light weight" wire connections to nose and ears was to minimise weight upon those physical areas. It was an eye piece preferred by accountants and all forms of "book worms". This was a period when the "written word" was at its peak. This was well before the light enhanced computer screen and at an age where the "written word" was in the majority as compared to the typed word. These reading glasses are very significant to the Kiewa Valley as they provide additional material which supports the "isolational factors" which were prevalent in the 1800's and early 1900's. Poor lighting and lack of available optical technicians in rural areas, required those suffering with eye troubles in these rural areas to go to Melbourne. An advertisement placed by H B Bissel "eyesight specialist" in the "Independent" Newspaper in 1915 on page 3 " Every person's eyes are liable to be affected by some little weakness or other and these weaknesses, if not corrected at once, are apt to assume a most serious aspect as time goes on". This type of advertisement is putting "the fear of God" on those with slight eyesight problems. It also does not factor the poor lighting used by most in rural areas at this point in time. By the mid to late 1950's, electricity in the Kiewa Valley was available to all households and improved lighting helped nighttime readers. These reading glasses, made in Melbourne, highlight the fact that the Kiewa Valley and its region were still reliant on Melbourne based "specialists" and travel to and from these highly professional health practitioners not only involved a long, and time consuming journey, but also an expensive one.The frames of this oval wire reading glasses is made from gold plated copper wire. There are three nose bridges each with a slightly different angle and shape, each has a different magnification. This may suggest that they were in use at different developmental periods during the wearers ages. Each of the three lenses were fixed onto the frame by a screw and fastened directly onto the glass. Two of the glasses have nose "guides/rests" and one without.. In 1911, students received prizes for highest marks. Books were appropriate prizes. Everil Fisher grew up and lived at Mongan's Bridge in the Kiewa Valley.Blue hard covered book with light blue title surrounded by light blue swirl on cover. On the spine - the title and author's name are embossed in gold. RTS is embossed in gold at the bottom of the spine. The decoration on the spine is light blue. Inside: Font is large.
